Fuji X-T30 vs Fuji X100F AND Fuji X100V. Which is right for you?!

  • Well I forgot about the f2 23mm lens for $450! Obviously that would be the best lens to mimic the X100F. I can't believe I missed it. My point during that segment isn't to mimic the X100F exactly so much as to point out the cost of the X-T3 with a small fixed prime. I can tell you one thing for sure; If the 1.2 lens isn't going to sway me then the 2.0 lens certainly won't. :)
Also, at about 3:31 in the video there is a picture that's credited to the X100f. It's actually the X-T30. The 55mm lens is a dead giveaway. :)

I know it's a long video but bare with me!
After spending a week with the Fuji X-T30 I have a lot to say about this great little camera. I've been circling around this tiny marvel for a while and thinking that I might just move away from my beloved X100F and into the interchangeable goodness that is the Fuji X-T30. After a week with the camera i have made a decision. Watch to find out how I got there!

Another outstanding conversational (rather than tutorial) video, Booray. I could hear myself talking as you analyzed the cameras and their features. I appreciate that you brought out the digital crop feature of the X100F as I have set it up to use with a push of a function button that sets it, lets me pick 50 or 70 mm with the ring, and then has it revert to raw afterwards so one does not have to use the menu at all. I used it often on a river cruise mainly in Tennessee in December and the upsized images are excellent.

Thanks Booray for this timely video, as I have been considering these two Fuji cameras for my next purchase. During the last three years, I've been using the Olympus EM10 MkII + 17mm f1.8 for all my personal and family needs with great results. But recently sold these so I can upgrade to newer tech, I already have a Nikon pro DSLR so that's covered. I have been lusting after the X100F for most of this year, but concerned about having a fixed lens; the X-T30 has the benefit of interchangeable lenses and current heavy price discounting here in the UK makes it look attractive. Don't forget you can always get a used lens to help keep the overall price down.
Thanks for all your videos this year, best wishes for the New Year.

You skipped over the f2 primes.. yes, you mentioned the pancakes, but the 16/2.8, 23/2, 35/2, and 50/2 make a formidable kit for travel, documentary or even event work on the small form factor T30 or E3 if you prefer the rangefinder form factor.

The leaf shutter is something I really want, the silent shutter too. So the 100F sounds better for me - but lucky for me, the 100V is now on the market, and I see you've made a "is it worth the upgrade" video, and I'm about to watch that. With what I've already heard about the 100V, I predict you're going to say YES, it's worth the upgrade.

The closest you can get in size to the X100F with the XT30 is by having the 27mmf2.8 on it. Even with this, it's still almost 1 cm larger than the X100F. And the focal length is narrower (27 vs 23). And the blur will be limited because it's f2.8 vs f2.
The 2nd closest option is to use the X23mmf2 with the XT30, but this lens will sacrifice size, as this combo is quite bulky as compared to the "pocketable" X100F.

Had a chance to use an X100T and X-T30 + 23 f2 at the same time before I sold my X100T (planning to get the V), IQ and speed wise it's the latter. But the compactness and "fun", it would be the X100 camera. I want to sell the 23 f2 and get the V. What do you think? Or should i just stay with the XT30 and 23 f2?

Thank you, Sir. I’ve been taking pictures with my Canon T4i since 2012 and I’ve been trying to make an upgrade and get rid of my old gear and I was really hesitant about which new camera I should buy. After watching your review you cleared all doubts I had and now I know the 100f is the one I need. The last trip I made to Mexico City I carried on my bag my Canon and two lenses and it was something heavy for me. I really wanted to go low weight and also another factor it was that It was so boring and complicated for me starting changing lenses so this was a deal breaker for me to choose the x100f over the others you mentioned. If I wanted to get the xT30 ant xT3 then I’d be wasting money and ending up in the same situation that is to carry unnecessary equipment. Also another thing is that I’ve always wanted to shoot on a 35mm prime lense and this would be my opportunity to accomplish it. By the way you have a great voice I really enjoyed and appreciated your review! Thank you again!

This is why I originally chose the X-T10. The X100 series has a fixed lens, and the X-T10 has that tilt screen. I think there is a place for many style cameras. The X-T30 is at a nice price. Even better is the XE3 which is $499, which is why I upgraded to it. That's CHEAP! It's great as a daily carry too. I think the X-T30 and X-E3 are the gems everyone misses for the flagship models. BUT, even easier to carry is the Ricoh GR. That is my Lazy day carry. The 23mm is not my favorite lens. I love the 35mm F/2 WR lens for daily carry or the 16mm. As for ND filter in X100F, you can place a Circulating ND filter, magnetic ND filters, or screw ons.to do the same.

BR......Thank you for the update. You merely confirmed what I keep telling myself.....the X100F continues to be for me. At the moment, I am merely trying to decide whether to upgrade to the next generation. I do street photography, graffiti/streetart and the images I see that interest me. I just printed my first 24x30 photo of a wonderful work by a favorite streetartist after returning from London for two weeks. We were there during the NATO meetings and Brexit election. I do not see how the V can possibly improve upon image quality for me as I am a guy taking photos because I enjoy it and do not have to make a living at it. Hence, the size, form factor, quality, ND filter, leaf shutter and overall great fun of the X series make it a keeper. I am tempted to buy an F and just put my current one tucked away as a backup because of the price. Happy New Year. Wayne

Excellent video, and timely too. I’m hoping the 100F comes down a little or the used market gets lower with the release of the 100V. It’s kind of pricey for me but...the flash sync/copal shutter and built in ND are so seductive.

Great Channel and Great work! Liked and Subscribed! But the closest lens you can get for the XT30 to match the X100F is 23mm f/2 and that costs you about $400. That makes the combo $1200 before any discount. With promotion that fuji usually runs every quarter, you will typically save about $200 on combo. So, you will end up paying about $1000 dollars if you buy it at the right time.
And you are right, X100 cameras are more portable and easier to carry around. For bigger lenses, XT30 is just too small to feel comfortable. For everyday use, I think the X100 cameras makes a lot of sense.

Good video. I had gone through the same thought process myself. I don’t get the criticism of factoring a zoom lens mounted on the X-T30 into the equation. That is totally relevant. I agree that the 100V might be quite awesome. Updated lens, fast focusing, newest sensor etc. Just wish they would’ve dropped the OVF to keep the price down. Please no XPro 3 flip down screen! Wouldn’t be a deal breaker, but would be quite a bummer. Holding hope that the flip down screen is reserved for the XPro3 ( I think it will be).

I’m on the horns of indecision. A few weeks ago I got a killer deal on an X100F, and I love it. The more I use the more it wows me. I am frankly astounded by the images I have produced with it.
Now it looks like the X100V may appear soon. It’s specs are, of course, speculation at this stage. It seems likely the auto focus will be improved, probably the resolution of the view finder, the sensor will have slightly higher resolution and be generally more advanced. A touchscreen might happen. The lens seems unlikely to change in speed or focal length, but perhaps it’s optics can sharpen a little at f2. Weatherproofing and in camera image stabilization look less likely. One of my biggest hopes is improved wireless transfer to computers/phones.
Sooooo. I can return the X100F for a full refund - a little less than $800 up until 31 Jan, wait a few weeks and land an X100V for maybe $1,500.
To do or not to do?
Yesterday I was squarely against the idea. Today, I’m inclined to go for it with the thought that if the F100V is underwhelming, it’s arrival will push the current $1,100 cost of the X100F to something closer the the $800 I paid.
    Thoughts?

I was in the same dilemma, but I can’t seem to part with my x100f. I love prime lenses and the 23mm lens on the x100f is all I need. A 35mm would be nice too and you can buy a fairly cheap screw on converter lens for the x100f. The xt30 also loses the dpad which is essential for me, and to buy an equivalent 35mm and 23mm lens for the xt30 would cost nearly a thousand. Plus the X100 series I believe are more than just camera gear. The xt30 is just a camera body that will be obsolete in a few years, but the x100 series are beautiful special cameras, comparable to Leica, that will be future classics.

I have used Fuji X100 (The very first one) and then somehow used canon as well as Nikon for several years. But now with addition of X-E4, I think between Fuji X-E4 vs Fuji X100F AND Fuji X100V, I will go for X-E4. The pan cake combination is superb and ofcourse many other small lenses to try for to keep it compact. When you made the video, it made sense to go for X100 V but now I favour X-E4. Only better option is FUJIFILM X-Pro3. What is your take on X-E4. (I know it does not have leaf shutter which you like)

They are both great. If I were only to own one camera it would be the X-E4 just for the interchangeable lenses. But if that were the case, I would rather have a Pro3 or X-T4 (or x-t3/2).
But, for a SECOND camera I like the X100V. Leaf shutter, built in flash, dedicated ISO dial and dedicates focus mode switch. Weather sealing. Since I can always grab my X-T4 if I want interchangeable lenses, I would rather have a vacation camera that is more fun to shoot. I do wish it had a flip screen though. :)

There’s a lot to like about the X100. It’s really a unique and special camera. The fixed focal length lens frees me to focus more on composition and worry less about carrying extra lenses and gear that I most likely won’t use. If I could only own one camera, it would be an X100.

X100f size, build quality, speed, almost silent shutter noise.. you kind of have to use it to appreciate it. In some ways it’s best to treat it as a 35m lens with a camera attached to it. If that’s the lens you pretty much like using most of the time then the x100f is better than the xt30 with 23m f2 in my opinion.
Simply because you can put it in your pocket as the lens doesn’t protrude as much and it has a filter built in so you don’t need to fiddle about with anything else. Using electronic shutter to avoid the shutter noise on the xt30 might be a negative if your trying to shoot quickly (street photography) and may get rolling shutter issues.
Also high electronic shutter speed to deal with bright light isn’t the same as using a filter if your looking for an artistic effect (movement in water or trying to use the flash to fill the face of a portrait in harsh light).
I feel the x100f is a “Swiss army knife” of a camera. It doesn’t do everything perfect but it has pretty much all the standard photography tools in a small well built package. It’s that combination and ease of use with dials etc.. that make it the better camera in my opinion. Especially if you already have another Dslr system.
Finally, although video is a lot better on the xt30 the lack of IBIS especially if you want to use the Fuji primes is a deal breaker. The shake is just too much. Some of the zooms have stabilisation which makes it much better but then it’s no longer pocketable or small and so it may defeat the purpose for some people.
I’m going to sell the xt30 and contune using the g80 for video. I think the x100f is a magical camera really. Definitely keeping that even though it’s more expensive. Just does it’s job so well.

I shoot with the X100F, X-Pro2 and X-T30 and love the first 2, but not a fan of the SLR feel of the X-T30. XT30 is a compromise in both directions and ergonomics is not good. The X100 series has the 28mm and 50mm equivalent conversion lenses. The digital zoom apparently only works with JPEG. Rumor has it that there might be a new 18mm equivalent conversion lens coming out with the new X100V. not sure if you have the same opinion that fuji should or at least wish fuji has a Full frame camera like a couple other youtubers but alternatively hows the idea that the X100V (next version) is actually full frame and fuji only need to create a custom ONE lens to fit/fix on to the body and be done with that. no need to create an interchangeable FF camera, just make the X100V fix lens camera full frame with the one lens stuck on to it.

Yes when you take lens into consideration the xt30 might be more expensive but you are buying into a system camera for different focal length lenses. To me something like the x100 is an expensive second camera. I can't see too many people owning one as their only camera (the fixed lens is too restricting).
Another issue that would stop me buying a x100 is the retracting lens and the fear of sucking dust into camera body. I've had dust on my Sony sensors but I clean them myself when needed. I couldn't afford to send a camera in to clean the sensor on fixed lens camera.

The F1.4 lenses are better to be used on the T1/T2/T3 for shear fact of weight balance. The old 23mm F1.4 can be used sure , but it is slower , heavier , makes more noise. For a pro and don't knowing what Fuji makes ? the review should be done over again . My thoughts despite the later comments.

If I were a professional reviewer then I would do it over.
I'm sorry that I didn't do a good enough job being clear that it's about PRICE and not image quality. The whole point of that segment is simply to show that one of the two big reasons I was looking at the x-T30 was the $800 price point and that it's actually more like $1200. It doesn't matter what lens you mount. Use whatever you want and it's still not $800 was my point.
The point of the video is to show that I had two driving reasons for considering the X-T30; Price and zoom lenses. Turns out it's not so cheap and not so easy to use with zoom lenses. It's not a video about lenses and image quality. I'll leave that to the pro reviewers. I'm just a professional photographer who makes videos for fun. :)

@@BoorayPerry Okee.....but anyone can easy determine that the X-T30 is not a good match with the zooms for normal fact of weightbalance . The T30 is tiny - even compared to my X-pro which is even bigger than the T3. The zoom lenses fit best to the T3 and even better with additional grip. So yes , the X100f is still the best for allround stuff and street together with the Panasonic Gx9 and Olympus Pen-f maybe ( both good for b/w). And the advantages you mentioned are correct , ND filter , flash, hi-sync , fixed lens so less possibility of sensordust , and maybe the biggest is the fact that you can keep one eye on your subject and the other in the viewfinder - that is if your right eye dominates , and in addition your nose does not stick to the screen. So bingo the X100f rules . Apart maybe that the Panasonic has a tilt-viewfinder which is very handy and stealty for streetshooting.

    2. Electronic shutter covers both the silent shooting and 3-stop ND filter. I use my 56/1.2 at 1.2 in sunshine all the time.
    3. Maybe new 16-80mm is better choice than 16-55mm. It looses only 1 stop on aperture, but picks up 6 stops on OIS. You’d be shocked. And it is lighter, smaller, and a little skinnier.
    4. What about other fantastic primes: 90/2, 56/1.2, 50/2, 35/2, 23/2, 16/2.8, and even the Venus Laowa 9/2.8?
    5. Digital zoom: every camera has it. It is called “cropping”. I do it often in post editing, but very occasionally in body on my XT-1.
You’re forgetting of the 23/2.0 would be enough for me to redo this whole video if it were mine. My other points are just further suggestions/omissions. Booray Perry, with all due respect, your complaint on 23/1.4 was the cost, so the 23/2 is extremely relevant. It is also offered as a kit lens for a discount. Next topic: 16-55 zoom is not f/2. It’s f/2.8. 16-80 new zoom is f/4. So it is one stop, as I said. Your complaint on 16-55 was that it is heavy and too fat for the XT30 body. 16-80 addresses that, but is one stop slower. 23/2 on x100 doesn’t zoom at all. IMHO, precision in our words counts when other people are listening to our advice to make decisions.

      @BoorayPerry  4 года назад

@@swagonman Point one: yes, the cheaper lens is extremely relevant vs the $800 choice. However, I also referenced a $450 lens in the video. Even when offered as a kit lens the f2 lens is not much cheaper than $450 I suspect. My point being that my mistake in not listing that lens is not as bad as it could be. Had I only referenced $800 lenses when discussing price I would probably remove the video. My point was to show that the final price of the X-T30 is not far removed from the X100F and as such, "price" is not a big factor in considering the camera. Since price was the first thing that drew me to the camera, removing it is a big deal for me. That left the other big factor for me, zoom lenses.
Yes, F4 is one stop from f2.8 but it is 2 stops from the X100F lens and personally, that's too many for me, especially on a crop sensor camera. Yes, it's cheaper and lighter but at a cost (aperture) that, for me, puts it out of the realm of comparison with the lens that is on the x100F. I don't like having to settle for f2.8 on the zoom, there is no way I'm going to f4. That lenses doesn't even exist on my radar. But that's just me. For many people it's fine. Everyone has their stuff, ya know :)
I get what you're saying about precision, I really do. But I also think that You Tube is all things. it's a place where DP Review does a camera review that takes a day to film and covers every aspect of a camera and it's a place where people just come together and talk about cameras like they are sitting at lunch. I'm the latter guy. I'm gonna make mistakes. What matters is that I own them. I own that I missed the 2.0 lens but I contend that it would not have changed my conclusion one bit.
Oh, and I never use electronic shutter. When I want a fast SS it's either to freeze fast movement or knock down the ambient for flash, neither of which you can do with electronic shutter. This is what makes the leaf shutter so cool. :)
Oh, I didn't mention other primes because I assume that they are all great. FOR ME, considering this camera was never about the option to carry a bag full of primes. It was about price and the option to mount a zoom. Would these two factors be so great that I could overlook the things i miss by not having the X100f or X-T3.
The best part is that if I hadn't screwed up and left out that lens we wouldn't be having this discussion and this discussion is the most fun part of making videos. Really, if I made a perfect video that covered everything to everyone's satisfaction it would be kinda boring. LOL
      Thanks for setting me straight
Now, here's my question for you: Why not the X-T3? Is the smaller body (and price) on the X-T30 really worth it? because the X-T3 is pretty small too.

Booray Perry Thanks for nice reply. As I stated in my first reply above, the XT3 would be my choice. I’m old, and the larger EVF makes a lot of difference for my eyes. But I hike and backpack, so if my eyes were better, XT30 for weight. And interchangeable lens is really important for landscape photos while hiking. I just got the Laowa 9mm f/2.8 manual focus for Christmas. It’s pretty awesome wide and tiny and distortion-free. Fuji should make one like that. Weight of 10-24 is too much for my hiking needs. A tiny 9mm, 16mm, and 35mm covers more range and balances better when camera is on diagonal shoulder/neck strap. Takes time to swap lenses, but need some rests when hiking anyway. I still want the new 16-80 for when I’m on vacation with my impatient family. I don’t shoot professionally at all, so can live with f/4 on the zoom. It can give shallow DOF at 80mm end. And maybe I’d keep the 23/2 or 35/2 in my pocket for DOF and bokeh when I want it at a lower focal length. Basically, I love being able to reconfigure my camera with interchangeable lenses. So that’s what works for me.

X100V will be released in 2 months, by then I don't think you have a choice but to upgrade because nobody wants to watch another video about x100f!😊🍻

What are you talking about do you not research be for making these videos ? You can get the 23mm f/2 for around $300.
So you can pick up a used X-T30 for around $700 and a 23mm f/2 for around $300. That's way cheaper than XT100f plus you can upgrade lenses. Now what's the better deal ?

You are comparing used to new. You have to compare "new to new" or "used to used."
The bottom line is that if I was expecting to spend less on the X-T30 than I would on an X100F I was wrong.

A fuji body with interchangeable lenses is nowhere near the same as an X100 even with a smaller lens. They are two different cameras for different purposes. The question isn't one or the other. You want both. The X100 goes almost anywhere and is meant to be simple. It's for the time when you don't want to bring your camera camera. I've had smaller bodies like the X-E3 but it was never the same shooting experience of an X100.
