Big shout-out to viewer Matt Brodie (@mattbrodie - did that work?) for pointing out that the distance scale also has a blue bar which shows the depth of field. I TOLD you guys my eyes aren’t what they used to be!
Also, assuming the X100V works the same as the X100F, there's an entry in the Shooting Menu called "Depth-of-Field Scale". That allows you to set the circle of confusion to either "pixel basis" which uses a CoC of one pixel (about .004 mm), or "film format basis" which uses the conventional CoC value for APS-C (about 0.02 mm). I believe the default setting is pixel basis, so the DoF bar is very short. You might want to set it to Film Format Basis.

There was briefly a $1000 flat refurb option available, kicking myself for not having signed up for notifications from Fuji earlier. A used X100V goes for $1700 on eBay these days, $300 over MSRP.
Excellent upgrade. I get similar results w/ the XT-3 and 23mm f/2 prime. The design and compactness of the X100V are superior but I can’t justify the price for a new camera which is duplicative.

@@chrismacdonald.6295 As with every item, you get what you pay for. Yes 7-8K for an Leica M body of any type (except perhaps the unicorn-like M10 Monochrom) is too much to ask, even with Apple-level industrial design going on there. The real reason to go all in on Leica, however, is their exquisite glass. Ask any lens snob. Or better, just look at he pictures people can create with them. The old inbox was filled with notifications about this camera today, but yours was my first stop on the RUclips parade, Hugh. Nicely and thoughtfully done as always, even with the cold meds :-) I think Fuji nailed this one, as they addressed the three most commonly referenced areas for improvement in the X100 series: A sharper, updated lens, a tilting rear screen, and weather sealing. If they hadn’t changed anything else it would seem a worthwhile release. To me, the X100- and X-Pro-series bodies make the most sense if you’re one to take advantage of the hybrid optical viewfinder; that’s what really sets them apart. Otherwise, you’re probably better served by an X-T or X-E body. I waffled back and forth between the X100f and the X-Pro2 a couple of months back, ultimately going for the graphite gray X-Pro2 + 23mm f/2 bundle that was on sale at the time, not long after the X-Pro3 was launched. Between it and my X-H1 - which I got on that crazy deal you shared late last year - I’m content, and I still have my X-T1 which is almost permanently paired with my 35mm f/1.4 - and is still a magical combination.
Fuck me! That's the first time I've actually listened to a complete review of a camera like I was listening to someone reading a bedtime story. Brother you're seriously in the wrong game. I don't have a clue how you get into voice overs for audio books but fuck: the job is custom built for that presentation. great diction too. :)
Hugh, Once again great video. After a previous video, I took the enormous leap and jumped ship from my Canon 1DX and L series lenses to Fugifilm XT3 and a range of lenses.
Buddy, I'm surprised we haven't bumped into each other on the streets of NY... I completely recognized the UPS driveway... Bill Cunningham used to go by there a lot too. ;-) Fuji is nice. I love their 'photographer first' ethos. One of the more, less-compromising camera manufacturers out there. I love the built-in ND and leaf shutter lens. Sweet. Don't know if I'd spend $1400 on one though. Though, a good deal considering the competition.... Great vid! Keep up the fine work Fuji!
I am one of those guys with too many cameras and lenses, though I don't have any Fujifilm gear. The X100V looks a really nice camera, and I am impressed with the monochrome images particularly, but unlike many photographers, I don't care for the 35 mm (equiv) focal length. I much prefer 28 mm or wider for my type of photography. I suppose the nearest thing to the X100 series in my arsenal is the Panasonic GX8 (I don't have a GX9) with the lovely Leica branded 15 mm f1.7. I nearly pulled the trigger on a Leica Q2, but went for the M10-P because I didn't want to be restricted to a fixed lens, and I wanted the rangefinder experience (and to move away from the technology crammed inside most cameras these days). Finally, Hugh, thank you for these videos, and your calm measured approach to giving us your views on camera gear.
I’m in same situation too, I shoot 28mm and wider in some situation, so X100V still not for me or just get it but with the wider converter too and love with it? Or just work harder and get Leica M? Or just get D Lux 7?
When I saw this announcement my first thought was to my very first 35mm camera the Konica Auto S2 with a fixed 45mm f1.8 lens and quiet as a mouse leaf shutter. The nostalgia factor alone makes me want this camera.
I just recently purchased this camera after listening to your review. Can you tell me what your favorite black and white film simulations settings on this camera is?
Waited to hear your opinion before pre-ordering!! It's an amazing purchase and i can't wait to get my paws on it!. Even as a GR user ill still use both for different cases.
FWIW, the focus and depth of field indicator works fine on my X100F in all three viewfinder modes. You can choose to show it or not for the OVF and EVF/screen in the menu. Should be the same for the X100V. I don't show it on my X-Pro3 (yeah, chose it over the Leica Typ 240) because it reports wildly wrong focus distances with some wide-angle lenses, like the 14mm. But on the X100, works a charm. The diopter wheel. Mine doesn't actually mess up. But I have two words for you: Gaffer tape, dude!
I still have the original X100 and need to bring it out again for a run. Indeed it kicked off my appreciation of all things Fuji, having now had X-T2 and 3’s. Indeed, as I have stated previously I am about to change from being long in Canon backs and lenses to convert to Fuji GFX. Canon have failed to convince me with their mirror less option and seem stuck in a rut. Indeed I mused with the guys at Aperture in London if Canon has missed the boat. The thing is, and here is the rub, it is because of your well researched and thoughtful videos that I am about to make that leap. No don’t worry I will not blame you if I suddenly have the fear when I actually leap, I am old and weary in all things. The X and X-T ranges have given me the taste and also the confidence to finally cross over. The local college will hopefully appreciate Canon equipment that has been looked after and cherished, witnessed by the Peli cases they will come with. As Jack Lemmon would have hopefully appreciated, I am sending the elevator back down.
nice video ! one more ND stop is nice, but can you now use the digital tele to capture in raw with this new model, or is it still limited to jpeg ? it's a lot of cash for a sensor upgrade and a flip out screen and an ISO dial that is a bit easier to use if you don't want to take the time to learn how to operate the old style. as far as the weatherproofing, i still use my X100F in a lot of wet weather and never had a problem
New to the game here. Gonna work on my craft with an x70 I just bought today...but I'm very x100v curious. Might have to wait for the used market to develop but that might be perfect for my scenario. Thanks for the thoughtful and empassioned perspective! 🙏
This camera ticks about all of my boxes, I have used cameras since I was 12 that’s 18 years now. I have owned over 40 cameras and used/tried nearly a 100, everything from APS-C to Hasselblad and capture one medium format cameras as well ass everything between 35mm to 6x7 film. I worked as a professional photographer in real estate and portraiture, but didn’t like the hustle of being a freelancer and I have slowly lost my passion for the craft. Longing for the days I had a Leica m6 with a 35mm summicron but without the hustle of developing and scanning. The only thing I would change and I don’t think that many people would like is to have no back screen. This is definitely a buy for me, selling my X-t3 and going minimalist.
Hello I'm new to photography and for the last 6 months I've been more involved in the process of learning the art of photography. I've been exploring the pro mode on my Samsung s10 plus but now i feel that having a dedicated camera for photography is a must if i want to get better. I was pondering on going for the Richo GR III or the fujifilm x100v. Any advice for this newby will be much appreciated, you have an amazing channel and i really like your take on the cameras.
I prefer the X100V because it has an Viewfinder and articulating screen, but to be fair I’ve not had a GR III in hand. My friend Sean Tucker has owned both but is currently enamored if the Ricoh for its diminutive size.
Excellent review and perspective. Fuji with its great build quality, gorgeous film simulations and a 35mm lens (plus the converter lenses) find the sweet spot for most of us. I do have an F but will upgrade to V definitely. Q on the other hand is a dream camera but 28mm lens is a show stopper for me. If it would have a 50mm or even 35mm I would have switch to Leica.
Actually 28mm is best for street photography since when you get close the subject wide lens effect is making you feel in the picture. I own x100v with wide converter and definitly very big improvement over x100f. However Leica Q has an incredible lens that can create dreamy images.
@@gurkandegirmencioglu9881 Selamlar, I usually take pictures indoors with limited light conditions. Unfortunately 28mm is too wide for me. I would buy a Leica Q in a heartbeat if it was 50mm.
Fantastic review. Fantastic camera. I looked at one closely at a camera shop near me and the construction is really nice. And I like how the iso dial clicks up and stays in position.
The original X100 was a game-changer for me the tilt screen is a brilliant addition too, was just in new york city for the first time with my x-pro for day time and x100 as a pocket cam for night on the street and for me the change to the lightweight, unobtrusive Fuji's with their beautiful colours and feel cemented that my street work was forever changed. After years of professional shooting on canon (which always does a great job in fairness) I found I was losing ground and passion and then after getting the Fuji it was the first time in a long time I was excited to shoot again, gear doesn't always matter but you were dead right before Hugh when you said "Don't underestimate how a camera makes you feel".
GREAT question! EVF, of course not. OVF: I don't remember, sorry! Anyone else out there has an answer? I'll check in with Fujifilm if no one weighs in.
I am a Nikon user from way back, digital and film. The Z-series looks good . . . but I just couldn't see leaving or adding a new system in any of the additions to the digital camera world over the past several years. When the X100 first emerged in 2011, it caught my eye, but there was so much I was "meh" about. However, when the X100V showed up, I ordered one. Lots of reasons here - tilt screen, film emulation, external dials for most controls, ND filters, fixed lens and light weight. I am shooting film mostly these days, but am looking forward to this newcomer to the fleet . . . Nice review, very thoughtful, too. I enjoyed your compare and contrast approach very much.
I'm thinking about trading in my X-T1, 35mm (f2) and 18mm XF lenses for the X100V, I miss my X100S... Two questions from one spectacle wear to another, the optical viewfinder, I can't remember how I got on with it in comparison to the one in the X-T1... The weather seal adapter and filter, can you still add a lens hood to them when in use? Oh, and a third question... Hold that thought... Is the camera weather-sealed when the wide/telephoto adapters are attached?
Mac Jim in reverse order: yes, weather sealed with the auxiliary lenses when you use the weather seal adapter - I saw that directly. IIRC, yes, you can use a lens hood with it. I’m unfamiliar with the X-T1, but again as I recall the X-T2 and ‘3 have higher magnification and as good or better eye relief than the 100v.
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions thank you, that's good to know... I was going to go to my camera store to trade in today, but it's so dreich out that it's a sit in the cafe and read and relax day...
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions hello again... went into a camera shop in Glasgow and got my hands on the X100f to check the viewfinder out with my glasses... I think I’ll be trading in my two cameras and two lenses and going X100V (withthe telephoto extension lens...)
I recently got caught up in all the new features of the Fuji line. I wanted to get back into this less gear centric fun style of shooting and enjoy the pure act of taking beautiful photographs again. But my budget won’t allow for any of this stuff. So I found a Fuji X-pro 1 with a 7 artisans 23 f1.4 lens for $300! It is so so so much fun. The original x trans sensor still produces absolutely beautiful photos. Don’t get caught up in al the new stuff if you can help it. I’ve never had so much fun with a camera. “Old” digital is good too!
I'm not looking for a new camera as I just sold everything and switched to the ricoh griii...but man, you're voice is so dang soothing!!! LOL. Great, thorough video... well done!
I know this might be an unrelated question because this is about Fujifilm but coming from someone who is interested in the rangefinder (affordable) based style camera nowadays, Wouldn't be the sony a6 series a great option for street photography (or stills in general) considering it also has other capabilities? Also, it's always a joy watching your reviews and your perspective on the current camera industry, your insight is unprecedented and knowledgeable.
Very nice review. I like your delivery. If is very soft but precise. I’m doing a part exchange with an XT3. Why you guys may ask. The size. The XT3 is without doubt, a quality camera but it can hardly be described as an ideal street photography camera. The X100V nails it in every respect. And weather sealed. Thanks Fuji.
Forgetting the build quality and design, how do you think it compares to the Leica CL as a light travel camera? I can use 35mm and 50mm equivalent on both cameras. Ease of use, Image quality and speed of focus are my main criteria. I shoot RAW so the film simulations aren't important, neither is video as I'm shooting just stills. Watching video after video but struggling to make a decision! I'm guessing you'll say if I have the budget go Leica... A 7k package inc two lenses vs 1.5k the Leica CL has to be some camera... Thanks for the informative video :)
Matt Thompson You guessed right. The V is a heckuva camera at a relatively bargain price; has weather sealing, superior AF and an articulating screen - which are big deals - but the CL glass is superior (and you asked that I forget about build quality and design).
Informative and comprehensive review Hugh not just on the new Fuji X100V but also on the majority of the APS-C world, tangential question; would a Leica CL be the best APS-C body option for expanding the utility of my Leica M lenses or should I look elsewhere in the Fuji or Sony range ?
I thought the CL was an ideal match for M glass, which is a major reason we got one. But many people love putting m glass on the X-Pro2, and I well understand! 🖖🏻
Did I miss any mention of the Ricoh GR III? If we are talking about street photography, I think the GR III is nonpareil and $500 cheaper. If we are talking about general purpose photography there are interchangeable lens options that, at that price, make more sense to me, Fuji's and other brands..
@@3BMEP I have the GR II. it is a brilliant street tool. I don't own an X100 but I can see it as a great all-around camera. I prefer ILC cameras as my other tool.
The XE3 is my go to when not shooting my M4-2. As much as I wanted the x100f (and as much i would love to get my hands on the x100v), the fact I can use my M mount glass with the XE3 works out better for me.
I love my X100F. I'm tempted with this new iteration but I think I will wait until XT-4 is announced and folks start getting their hands on it. I don't think I can justify selling this and picking up the V. At least not yet. Great and informative video! Thanks!
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions true. It’s mostly compactness and design that make me go toward x100v. But I don’t want to lose picture quality. Do you know if the x100v lens is similar to the 23mmF2 or 27mmF2.8 in terms of quality/character?
Great review, thanks, because I have been reading until I am blue-in-the-face about which mirrorless camera to purchase, and then it all becomes a blur of confusion and frustration. I can afford any of them, but want one that has long battery life and everything else. Thanks.
Big shout-out to viewer Matt Brodie (@mattbrodie - did that work?) for pointing out that the distance scale also has a blue bar which shows the depth of field. I TOLD you guys my eyes aren’t what they used to be!

Fuji is nice.
17:15 cold meds or not, you are 1000X more articulate than me, Hugh. Great work, as always!
🙏🏻😊
one slip up in the entire video? incredible. He should do audiobooks as a side hustle.
You have a real talent composing really classic pictures. Love the video.
🙏🏻 Thank you. 😊
My a pleasure! I love the 15/1.7, btw.
I’m in same situation too, I shoot 28mm and wider in some situation, so X100V still not for me or just get it but with the wider converter too and love with it? Or just work harder and get Leica M? Or just get D Lux 7?
@@chinzeeyuen1628 Have you considered the XPro 2 or 3?
Your closing remarks were spot on!
🙏🏻
I‘m loving the photos you took, fantastic! From these pics, it looks like fun was had. Greetings.
The X100F is still a gem!
Though, I'm upgrading still to the V. Thanks for vid.....I love love LOVE Fuji cams.
what a thoughtful review, and by such a charming and charismatic chap, lovely!!!!
😊🙏🏻
Hi Hugh, I don't think the protection filter and adapter are included at least here in the U.K. They cost additional money.
Your pictures in the intro.... incredible!
🙏🏻☺️
I like it and it’s operation but I shoot wider than 35mm, so what should I do, still get it or get wider focal length camera?
When I saw this announcement my first thought was to my very first 35mm camera the Konica Auto S2 with a fixed 45mm f1.8 lens and quiet as a mouse leaf shutter. The nostalgia factor alone makes me want this camera.
how would the Fujifilm camera under review compare with the Panasonic LUMIX DC-TZ220? ...picture quality-wise
I just recently purchased this camera after listening to your review. Can you tell me what your favorite black and white film simulations settings on this camera is?
ACROS!
This will definitely be my first x100. I was waiting for the lens update.
capturedbyannamarie Enjoy!
how do i decide if to get the all black or the classic black and silver. yikes. such a hard decision. please help
Waited to hear your opinion before pre-ordering!! It's an amazing purchase and i can't wait to get my paws on it!. Even as a GR user ill still use both for different cases.
We came here for “hold that thought”
I really enjoyed the walkabout intro portion mixed in with you using the camera. Nice job.
🙏🏻😊
As Jack Lemmon would have hopefully appreciated, I am sending the elevator back down.
nice video !
one more ND stop is nice, but can you now use the digital tele to capture in raw with this new model, or is it still limited to jpeg ?
it's a lot of cash for a sensor upgrade and a flip out screen and an ISO dial that is a bit easier to use if you don't want to take the time to learn how to operate the old style.
as far as the weatherproofing, i still use my X100F in a lot of wet weather and never had a problem
so calm to watch ... very nice .. its good to watch
People are finally getting the camera and some are complaining of the camera overheating.
Did you experience that at all?
Happy it's up! Great review, Hugh!
My blood pressure has dropped, brother!
New to the game here. Gonna work on my craft with an x70 I just bought today...but I'm very x100v curious. Might have to wait for the used market to develop but that might be perfect for my scenario.
Thanks for the thoughtful and empassioned perspective! 🙏
Do you like the black or silver better in person ? Many seem to like the black but other vids I've seen the silver looks better
I love your passion about photography, always great to see :)
😊🖖🏻
Wonderful presentation as always, thank you and best regards from Perth Western Australia
Great review but for me the advantages of a leaf shutter is one of the more compelling features. Didn't hear you mention it.
You are right - it is an advantage both for flash and for the combination of quiet and minimal vibration.
I'm really liking the way you've edited the sound. Sounds so focused and crisp. Could you maybe tell us something about that?
AlphaSphere on my to-do list!
Hello
I'm new to photography and for the last 6 months I've been more involved in the process of learning the art of photography.
I understand.
😊👍🏻
Dumb question, does the lens with adapter get in the way of what you see through the ovf/evf?
Naomi Drew Enjoy!
@@3BMEP I will. I am looking forward to its arrival - sort of like planning for a baby - gotta buy a few things besides the camera!
Mac Jim sounds like a plan!
Wonderful contribution to the discussion - thank you!
V for Vendetta!! was interested til i saw the MSRP lol, Ill wait a couple of years.
I'm not looking for a new camera as I just sold everything and switched to the ricoh griii...but man, you're voice is so dang soothing!!! LOL. Great, thorough video... well done!
Enjoy the ‘III! 🙏🏻
Hello from Athens ! I am going to buy soon - after 2 yrs of its being in the market !
Enjoy!
I am looking at the Panny GX9 with the Leica 15 f1.7. For £750 used, this setup could be great.
Great combo!
Great review. Thank you.
🙏🏻😊
Thank you for not forgetting Ricoh GRiii.
All the GR's are unforgettable.
Personally, I think the inclusion of a tilt screen is the best decision that Fujifilm have implemented on this camera.
@@3BMEP Thanks for your answer :) Can I clarify the V has superior AF compared to the CL? Or compared to the other X's?
Yes, you did. A passing mention, yes - but there. I’ve simply never had one in hand. 😊
@@3BMEP I have the GR II. it is a brilliant street tool. I don't own an X100 but I can see it as a great all-around camera. I prefer ILC cameras as my other tool.
That's a great review/analysis/comparison!!! Thanks!!! tho I still not sure if I should go for x pro 3 or x100v
I understand. You’ll sort it, I’m sure. 😊👍🏻
Very thoughtful! Bourdain-ish? Thanks
The XE3 is my go to when not shooting my M4-2. As much as I wanted the x100f (and as much i would love to get my hands on the x100v), the fact I can use my M mount glass with the XE3 works out better for me.
I understand. 😎
Bought one of the first ones. And they still trade for the same price.
Guess that speaks a lot for it!
I love my X100F. I'm tempted with this new iteration but I think I will wait until XT-4 is announced and folks start getting their hands on it. I don't think I can justify selling this and picking up the V. At least not yet. Great and informative video! Thanks!
Thank YOU!
Would be interesting to have a comparison between xt3+27mmF2.8 and the x100v.
I’m hesitating to sell mine as I’m mostly shooting street and family
Wayan Barre if you’re happy with what you have, that’s a GOOD thing! 🖖🏻😊
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions true. It’s mostly compactness and design that make me go toward x100v. But I don’t want to lose picture quality. Do you know if the x100v lens is similar to the 23mmF2 or 27mmF2.8 in terms of quality/character?
I need to upgrade my Fuji X-E1. Maybe not need, but want.
I only hear about street- and secondary- take anywehere- camera... but never really for portraits. Is it simply not versatile enough?
Great review, thanks, because I have been reading until I am blue-in-the-face about which mirrorless camera to purchase, and then it all becomes a blur of confusion and frustration.
I can afford any of them, but want one that has long battery life and everything else.
Thanks.
Hi! Can you confirm that minimal focus distance of the lens is still 10cm?
3inches away baby
I was #11 until I got my X-pro2. That body, the 16, the 23, and the 50 got me back.
