The reason for the pop up headlight fail is the C4 came with plastic headlights and most C4 owners replaced them with glass which puts extra wear on the bushings. I was actually friends with one of the C4 engineers who passed away recently God rest his soul great guy with a C4 museum for a garage. I met him when I came out to confront a random guy walking around my C4 in 2012

Proud owner of a first year C4, 1984. The digital dash is what makes the C4 an amazing retro drive. As these are only in the 1980s models, to me these are the true C4s. Also, no floppy sun visor issues!

Be mindful of the fuel system. Lots of these cars aren't driven much and may have been sitting awhile. Got my second C4 this year, 95 dark red metallic (maroon). In dark like it looks almost purple like the color yours is. Lots of fuel issues. It was all tied to a clogged metal return line, which ruined the fuel pressure regulator and burst a injector O ring. Naturally I only discovered the root problem at the end. So might want to check fuel pressure. You may have clogged or leaking fuel injectors as well. You can clean them with a kit. Easy to do on this car.
Along the same lines be mindful of the battery. Just replaced the one in there that was only a year and a half old. If it's been sitting and run down a lot the battery life will be short.
Had some weatherstripping issues as you mentioned, the door leaks when it rains.
The power antenna won't lower all the way, which is another common problem.
Floppy ends on sunvisors is common. A binder clip is an easy fix.
My jack was missing. Probably forgotten on the road by previous owner who had a flat.
Climate control buttons can be nonresponsive. I've heard taking apart and cleaning with alcohol helps, haven't done it yet.
Look at the check valve next to the fuel rail. If it fails you won't have cruise control. And they tend to fail because it's plastic next to a hot engine, they shrink and melt. $4 part.

This is a great introduction to C4's. I think you hit on a lot of key points. Having a 1990 convertible with the hard top that I picked up at a good price with 27,000 miles. You know that like with any used car with low mileage sometimes can still mean lots of service is needed to make it dependable. Some folks seem to think that well why it has low mileage? It's 33 years old in my case and a lot of time related things are due. I knew this when I bought it so it a no surprise. The one thing that I missed is that I didn't have anybody local who had a clue about corvettes. So, it was a steep learning curve as to who was competent and who wasn't. There's a lot I do myself, but when I go to get even tires or alignments, I have to be sure they know how to lift the car, release the hood, open the doors due to flex. Once you explain it to them, they get it. mind you these guys weren't even born when this car was new. Thanks for your blog on your corvette. These corvettes can be a blast to drive when you get the old bugs out. Not as fast as a C5-C8 but very enjoyable none the less. Hope you get miles of smiles from yours!

For the headlight motors, I’ve found it’s rarely the motors. It’s the plastic drive gears. Update those plastic ones with the brass ones and you’ll be set. A lot CAN go wrong with the headlights, but the gears are most common. They just disintegrate

Good helpful video. I live in the UK, and my current 95 LT1 (in competition yellow) is my 3rd Vette. I had, and still have a problem with the secondary air pump (smog pump) When it failed the SES lamp comes on, car still driveable, however, the fall back mode when this happens is to switch on the main engine fan, permanently! I got hold of another pump hoping it word sort this out, sadly not! I am still using my car, but as the main fan comes on permanently, not doing any long journeys, worry is that a fan that is only supposed to come on when required, will probably burn out the electric motor on a long trip. To date I have not managed to resolve this issue, all fuzes etc check out fine, and diagnostics don't show anything other than 'it doesn't work' so that's really helpful! I'll keep you posted if and when I get this problem sorted.

  • @nicholasmize79

I would add that you really need to look over rubber vacuum lines and coolant hoses. Time is not kind to those items, especially since many good condition cars spent most of their lives in a non climate controlled garage. The car may look great, but the rubber may be starting to get brittle and cracking. Vacuum leaks can cause all sorts of problems, from rough idle, to failing cruise control, to problems with the climate controls.

The only thing that I found on this video that I slightly kind of disagree with is on the air conditioning system converting an r12 system to 134a is really not all that hard or expensive. Other than the system is not leaking I've done it on a handful of cars in the past is put the right amount of peg oil in the system right along with the r12 oil that still in it if the system has been evacuated either due to a week or vacuummed out but the right amount of poundage in the system most Chevy vehicles are around 3 to 3 and 1/2 lb in a system works fine. Yes can you get all new evaporators coils this that and the other yeah that's what expense gets but you can just add the pag oil in the refrigerant in the system will work great.

Not if you drive it til it dies and sell it, you can get a running and driving example for ~4k. Treat it like a dog and have some fun and wreck the thing, can still get ~3k for the parts since older corvette owners are constantly in need of random parts that are no longer mass produced. You wreck a 4k civic and its scrap, you wreck a 4k corvette and you have 2k in wheels and tires, 1k exhaust, 1k fiber glass roof, etc

How do you know if the selective ride control is working or not? Can you hear the motors when selecting or can you easily feel the different settings when driving? Besides that I think one very very important thing to check is that you get the key fobs to the car. They are nearly impossible to get if missing and if you're very lucky and find one for sale you will pay hundreds of dollars for it.

    • @jeffspicolli593
      @jeffspicolli593 7 месяцев назад +1

@@NetzKanal To be honest I haven't worried about the light but I have read that it's as simple as going to the compartment behind the drivers seat and unplugging the select ride module screwed to the side, above the ABS unit, that will make your service light go out..
Some purists will cry about disabling FX3 but if you read about it it is really antiquated compared to modern magnetic ride control and I'm not a fan of 30+ year old shocks on my car.
It's the same with Bose Gold there has been a quantum leap in entertainment centres over thirty years.
The TPMS sensors are hiddeous and break when changing tires not to mention the front left for 1993 is unobtanioum.
The sport seat bolster bladders are useless for the 2024 cheesburger crowd as wide open the seat is snug.
