If you are not at wide open throttle, the throttle body (butterfly valve) is the primary air restriction in the intake so I don't think cutting open the airbox is going to yield much unless you are driving around with your foot all the way to the floor all the time. No, you didn't feel a 30-40 hp gain. And if you had tested it on a Dyno or at the track the performance would've shown that it didn't do half that much. Especially not on a basically stock engine with stock tubular manifolds , stock y pipes etc.
@@b.c4066 i stated it FELT LIKE a 30/40 hp gain. maybe it was only 15 /20 in reality but i'll take that too for the few bucks and little effort. the six speed does have the 3.48 rear as opposed to the auto 3.07. i guess you'll correct me on that too.
I love the c4 corvettes! I own a 2004 Subaru STI with low miles and all stock except for a new cobb down pipe, exhaust and a tune. It is a great car but I really want a c4 zr-1! I'm on the fence about what I will be doing...
Dude! Talk about random chance, but I saw your car for maybe 5 seconds getting on the freeway last summer and I still remember how sweet I thought it looked! ...almost convinced me not to buy the C5 I have now. Nice car!
Dyno tests have shown it's basically zero difference. It likely made the car slightly leaner or richer when you bolted it on, once the block learn made corrections there was most likely less than a 1-2 hp difference. Even professional race car drivers cannot feel anything less than 15-20 hp in seat of the pants, so odds are what you felt is sort of a placebo effect, this has been beat to death. Just saying.
@@b.c4066 I saaw what your talking about and if you look at their charts there are a bunch of flaws I forget what they were it's been a while, just sayin.

Upgrade it to becoming a flex fuel vehicle, fully compatible with ethanol not just as a minor ingredient in gasoline but as a fuel in its own right. The eFlexPlus 85 kit costs $749. Ethanol is ultra high octane, higher than even premium. Runs cooler, emits no soot, far less gunk in your fuel tank or fuel lines (once it loosens up the gasoline gunk; replace your fuel filters for the first tank or two til all the gasoline crud is gone). Domestic, 90% from family farms, renewable. And oh by the way hasn't been subsidized in over 10 years but it's still cheaper per gallon and often per mile, especially when compared with premium gasoline which is really the most valid comparison
I was wondering what the yellow number was on the miles. I’m 19 and bought my first car which is an 86 vette. Idk too much about old cars. I was nervous when I thought it said 545,000 miles 😂 thanks for clearing that up
I just subscribed to your channel. And this is my first post to you. I also have a C4. A 86 indy pace car I found, it was in a flood with no insurance, and sat beside a pole barn for 3 years before I got it. It was rebuilt by me around 18 years ago, and EVERYTHING electical has been replaced, and has been done inside to my specs. Nice custom leather seat covers I designed, center console and shifter boot to match. I'll be doing a repaint this winter because the paint needs redone. Also redoing a 81 vette I found under a tree at a chicken farm, been sitting for a decade. Everything will be rebuilt or replaced. My problem is I can't find the blinker arm with the cruise controls on it. Nobody make a replacement, and salvage places won't sell them. Any idea's where one is? Only thing I need to rebuild the steering column.
Just got an 87 vette. Its throwing a code 36. Runs fine but i hate the check engine light. Im thinking its maf related. It also amazes me that these cars get such good gas mileage. Mines getting about 17mpg.
The oil from the K&N filter only damages the MAF sensor if you over oil the filter. Also if it does, all you have to do is clean it with MAF sensor cleaner. (Don’t use brake parts cleaner. Some damages plastics)
Just for kicks, replace the cassette deck with either MiniDisc or Digital Compact Cassette. They were 90s tech but better fit the 80s retro futuristic vibe of the C4
@@ReynoldsRides what's worse is only 2,000 in years 2000-2009 and 0 since. Raced a bunch, 4 engines, 4 transmissions and 3 rear ends since I bought it. Oh and 3 different sets of wheels, 3 sets of front tires and about 20 sets of rear tires, mostly drag radials. (500 miles a set or 12 runs down the 1/4 whatever came first)
The 'high flow' air filters are suitable for short term use in racing applications only. They do flow a tiny bit more air but it's all due to reduced filtration capacity. Pick up an OEM air filter and you can't get a better product anywhere in terms of optimized filtration versus airflow. You can destroy your piston rings in just couple k's of driving with a 'performance' filter. It's a terrible deal for two extra hp. If you know what you're doing and perform the correct measurements you might be able to improve airflow by modifying the airbox or its cold air feed. But even then you have to understand the physics of it - otherwise you're only hurting your performance.
I don’t see why you should buy a special kit for the coolant bypass. I just put a longer coolant hose from the steel heater pipe directly to the intake manifold. Another mod you could do is remove the air pump and all the smog bs, if that’s legal in Utah.
I lived in Utah for 2 years I know that road, passes right by Saratoga springs. Idk but if you have the chance take a ride down to the end of the road there’s a cool abandoned gas station and some old cool bikes

Hey man i just stumbled upon your channel and im a new corvette owner. I got an '89 and im wondering what i should do to get more information about my maintenance and how to get the best outcome with my car. Thanks
Just FYI, no offense but be careful with pressure washing your c4, it's easy to zap your clear coat if you're too close to a high powered commercial pw. Also your motor needs a wash and detail, it's a great looking motor when done right!
Thank you for this video. Unrelated to this video. I am military overseas in Germany. I need to replace the radiator. Can you recommend a good place to purchase? From all the reading I want to replace with an aluminum 3 coil one. What are your thoughts? So hard to find parts out here so any recommendations would be grateful.
First, I NEVER took my '90 to a public car wash. K&N air filter should be the very first thing to do. Buy a used cover and cut it while saving the original. Those two little things really do increase performance. That device on the front of the throttle body is a waste of money. And, God help you if the screw backs out and gets sucked into the engine. Yes, it has happened more than once. LED bulbs under the hood is a good idea. I removed mine because the hood is up so much at shows and cruises and they drain the battery. It's a good idea to replace the interior bulbs with LEDs, also. Less heat generated to the plastic lenses. Keeps them from turning yellow.
The K&N is an engine wrecker so make sure you budget for a rebuild if you want to enjoy the 'durable and reuseable' grime introducer. For short term racing use they make sense but for road use you don't want to reduce your filtration effectiveness to a hundredth of the original in order to gain maybe 2-3 horsepower.
Great video! What color is your vette? It looks like a Navy Blue, or is it black and it is just the blue sky reflecting off it? Looks great. Now you need to add a not so cheap, but totally awesome mod... a big block!
I've done the exhaust Cat-Back I've removed the screen from the mass air flow sensor and I'd hollered out my airbox for air filter put in the k&n what would be your guesstimate the horsepower again?

The cut lid is cool, but you need to do a screen over the cut as the C4 is a major bottom breather and will suck up anything on the road. Also look to protect the air intake openings at the underside of the fr bumper. Look over at the ZR-1 net registry site for a list of simple preventative mods or go to the ZR-1 forum and look around for the tech tips. Save the Wave!
@@tomtom72 Yup I've already mounted heavy hardware cloth (metal mesh) above the air dam, it has kept the condenser and radiator very clean for years. One of the best and cheapest mods I've done! My airbox lid is stock/uncut.
Love these types of videos, wish you had a million views
Thank you!
Nice ride, I put 2,234 miles on my 1990 ZR-1 since May. I bought it in April 2019, had been sitting for several years, had a lot of general maintenance to do to her. I'm going to drive the wheels off this bad boy.
I plan on doing some performance mods to the LT5, the coolant bypass can be done on the ZR-1,as well as the air box mod. All the little things add up, no doubt. 👍👍🏁🏁
Nice! I love the C4 ZR1.
You should get a hold of another RUclipsr called Brit 5.0 and race her in her old Mustang Fox body... they're both in Utah and it would be a good nostalgic vintage race
This video is awesome. Helpful info, a little bit of user/driver feedback, and links to everything. Oh yeah, and freaking C4s.
Nice car brother. I’ve got a mint 84 Firebird at the moment, but I’m negotiating with a collector to get my first C4. If I can get it for the price I want I’ll be doing all these mods stat. Even if I could get 10-15 more HP total with all of them it would be worth those costs.
I just bought a 84 with 33000 miles on it. Love driving it with the top off.
If this C4 is all original with 800,000 Miles then my hats off to YA For sure.
Needed to find this video/channel. I have a 95 z28 and was looking at getting this 96 vette for sale around the corner! Right on time.
Dude thats cool that you also live in Utah because I do aswell by eagle mountain, I’m currently 16 looking into buying a c4 corvette right now
WHoot whoot!! just picked up an 84 Vette with 39k miles on it
Nice!
Love your video and content. I think it’s awesome you’re in Utah too! We pretty awesome to meet up and drive are Corvettes are one of our awesome canyons
*laughs in 84 C4 383 Stroked/Cammed Carburetor Converted, full trans swapped upgrade*
The K&N filter was the most expensive "mod" that adds "horsepower".
Least the revised privacy cover was a good idea. I'll leave a like.
made my 91 come alive when i drilled out my rear cat and replaced my stock mufflers with dynaflows. felt like a 30/40 hp gain.
Yeah gotta love those v8s they keep u nice and toasty onvthose cold days
Those under hood light covers have to be glass. The heat from the engine compartment would cook/yellow a plastic cover. Dah!
Can old lenses be retrofitted?
I love the c4 corvettes! I own a 2004 Subaru STI with low miles and all stock except for a new cobb down pipe, exhaust and a tune. It is a great car but I really want a c4 zr-1! I'm on the fence about what I will be doing...
I'm currently looking at a C3 widebody kit. Also going to look into motors.
A great c4 mod.....not tinting the windows lol
Might be getting me a '95 C4 vette soon, why not tint the windows?
And I will link that in the descriptions below!
Sweet Video.! Very informative.
Dude! Talk about random chance, but I saw your car for maybe 5 seconds getting on the freeway last summer and I still remember how sweet I thought it looked! ...almost convinced me not to buy the C5 I have now. Nice car!
👍👊
I got a c4
Who
Had the 88 convertible...same color, same wheels!! Miss it tons.
The throttle body mod does work I noticed it instantly. The most I noticed was a smoother throttle.
I know the C4 is ranked towards the low end of Corvette series, but I always like them better than the later C3s, especially the ZR1 with the Mercury dual over head cam engine
im 19 about to turn 20 , i can't wait to get my hands on one of these!
im gonna do everything in this video if i can
Yo if you knew you could get a loan for one would you do it tomorrow?
Sweeet man! Thanks! I just bought at 95 today!
Cutting that air filter vent is a good way to let splash water get into your engine. Be very careful driving with this mod.
C4 corvettes, blink-182 posters, and UT!
Ok, bro, you had me at *Bless his little heart!! New subscriber!!
And oh by the way hasn't been subsidized in over 10 years but it's still cheaper per gallon and often per mile, especially when compared with premium gasoline which is really the most valid comparison
my 91 corvette was more reliable than my two family sedans i owned at the same time, also got better gas mileage
I was wondering what the yellow number was on the miles. I’m 19 and bought my first car which is an 86 vette. Idk too much about old cars. I was nervous when I thought it said 545,000 miles 😂 thanks for clearing that up
derive it like you stole it! have fun
I love that c4!
Take the frisbee off the pulley. Another free mod that adds 5-10 HP. All these smalls mods add up to something you can feel.

Damn! I wish I could spray my 85 like that, my weather stripping is so bad it leaks like a WAP
Easily replace all the rubber.
Rub Vaseline on them, their just dry
Good video, I like those hood bulbs. Great idea 💡
I think you live like 2 minutes away from me haha. That's awesome.
Just for kicks, replace the cassette deck with either MiniDisc or Digital Compact Cassette. They were 90s tech but better fit the 80s retro futuristic vibe of the C4
I put 11,000 on my 1986 in one season when I bought it in 1992, and only 29,000 more miles in the next 27 seasons.
Dang!!!
(500 miles a set or 12 runs down the 1/4 whatever came first)
😯
Imagine an LS 427 mod....
I don’t see why you should buy a special kit for the coolant bypass. I just put a longer coolant hose from the steel heater pipe directly to the intake manifold. Another mod you could do is remove the air pump and all the smog bs, if that’s legal in Utah.
Yeah I just brought a couple feet of coolant hose and sent it from the first T to the second, doesnt look very good but it work 😁
EGR delete
Is that a 5/8” hose? How many feet of hose you need?
The Corvette factory that was in St. Louis was originally a barrel factory.
I lived in Utah for 2 years I know that road, passes right by Saratoga springs. Idk but if you have the chance take a ride down to the end of the road there’s a cool abandoned gas station and some old cool bikes
Got c4 19,000 miles . Runs great
I just went to the Amazon link for the led bulbs... It says that those bulbs you recommended do not fit my 1990 C4 under the hood...
The ones that they recommend do not mention fitting the sockets under the hood.
Any ideas???
It said the same thing for my ‘89 but I bought them anyway. I mainly went off the measurements and they are a perfect fit. I tried a set from Super Bright LEDs and they said it would fit my ‘89 but they didn’t at all. Not even close.
I ordered them anyways ..they arrive today...& I will see if they fit!!! I will let ya know!
@@kheaslett did they fit, I have a 94’ and it has the same problem of not fitting don’t want to go through the hassle of returning a 10$ part
How about changing out your original Bilsten shocks before your teeth rattle out of your head
Great video man I've got a 1990 corvette and done everything but the air foil, wasn't too sure about it but kinda wanna try it out after hearing the positivity of it, and also I'm at a loss of finding some new weatherstripping for the removable top any ideas where I can find them and thanks!
Thanks! Have you tried Eckler’s or Willcox Corvette?
My c4 has 185 000or so still going great
Mine has done 274,600 miles in the UK as of today. (Or, as they say ay Chevy, just run in!)
Thank you for sharing. You mentioned something about cooling the engine. What was it ?
Thanks and keep up with the videos... 👍💪😉
Hey man i just stumbled upon your channel and im a new corvette owner. I got an '89 and im wondering what i should do to get more information about my maintenance and how to get the best outcome with my car. Thanks
That's crazy I had bought my '94 c4 in August as well I stay in Michigan though
Bought mine in august too!! Live in Michigan also!
@@BLkDEATHBlaDe28 swear 😎 shiiiiid pull up frfr mine in the shop for two more weeks but I be on seven and woodward.
Just FYI, no offense but be careful with pressure washing your c4, it's easy to zap your clear coat if you're too close to a high powered commercial pw. Also your motor needs a wash and detail, it's a great looking motor when done right!
Thanks for the video! What year is your Vette? Have you done a tune on your Vette? Thanks.
Good video, nice info,thank you!.
do the led lights just stay on? i want to get them but idk if i have to turn them on manually or if they just stay on 24/7 i really hope not
I have a 1991 vette. i live in Utah
Where in Utah?
THANK YOU SO MUCH, VERY HELPFUL VIDEO!!
Great video! What color is your vette? It looks like a Navy Blue, or is it black and it is just the blue sky reflecting off it? Looks great. Now you need to add a not so cheap, but totally awesome mod... a big block!
Excellent. Thank you sir
Excellent. Good job!
I've done the exhaust Cat-Back I've removed the screen from the mass air flow sensor and I'd hollered out my airbox for air filter put in the k&n what would be your guesstimate the horsepower again?
