Sorry guys. Its an LS1. Got confused with the C4 Vette in the shop.
i almost spit out my beer lmao
I was about to rant! 🤣
It's OK not everyone is perfect
If you didn't know that, you wouldn't understand.
Bah it happens
The cartoon you're looking for is "Turbo Teen" where a kid becomes accidentally bonded to his car. When his body temp goes up he transforms into the car.
I would have preferred Turbot Teen, with a kid turning into an edible fish. But I’m a bit weird.
We spent about 4k overhauling most of our 2002 C5. Pinned harmonic balancer, belts, coolant flush, main seals, differential reseal, etc.
Can't complain though: for around 20k all in with all the other repairs, at 80k miles and 22 years old, it still pulls ahead of most traffic, blaring v8 noises.
I love my 2003 C5. I just spent $2K on the rear main seal and 1K on the harmonic balancer. It has 165,000 miles.
Harmonica !!! Oh no harmonic balance...er... what!!! Oh got it ...balance on the stereo , yeah unbalanced stereo is a real bummer.. be carefull with your rear main seal !!! Dangerouse back there ..I reccomend toilet paper , maybe quilted AND padded ...thanks

Please do a video on repairing the ECBM. Many pre-2001 Corvette owners were told those EBCM models are not repairable. Thank you.
I fear not even the car wizard could fix it. There is a guy on FB that claims he can do it. He posts in the C5 groups all the time.
Yep that would be interesting to see. I thought 97-00 ECBM repairs were a no go.
Have had 3 C5 vettes over the past 25 years and always heard/read that the EBCM were unrepairable on 97-01 cars, always wondered if re-flowing the solder would fix them in 'some' cases. I know it works in later c5 models on the EBCM and Climate Control Display.
yes, ive heard its not fixable also. if you can thats great.
are those stock manifolds? if so it must be a mild cam which is ok. i need more lol.
2k in repairs for a vette this old is nothing.
Man remembering that cartoon took me back
I have a C3 and my son has a C4, but both of us really like the C5's too. We both toured the factory in 2002 and saw them being made. was a really good experience.
I had a '99 C5 that I sold in 2009 with about the same mileage as this one has now. This one looks as good at 25 years old as mine did at 10 years old!. It routinely got 32 mpg on the highway, just incredible.
It's an amazing car! I've done the same. I think my DIC reads 33.9 currently. 6 spd is the only way to go.
I installed this very engine into my 68 firebird, it is amazing, runs 13.2 in the quarter, 0-60 in 5 seconds, and gets 27 mpg’s on the highway!! Smooth as silk
Great C5! I also own a '99 C5 Corvette, also with the manual transmission but just the regular coupe (not the fixed roof coupe like the sheriff). Fantastic car, great fun, and very affordable. I also still can't believe how great it is on gas. On the freeway I do 30-35 mpg easily, it's just amazing!
Glad the Car Wizard approves of my ride;)!
This is the perfect toy honestly. Fun, good looking, fast, sounds good, reliable, and easy enough to work on. I'd love to have a C5 someday
Only $2k in work? Ain’t hoovies car, that’s for sure.
These days $2k is getting off easy….
Man he takes pretty good care of that thing. Its freakin CLEAN
It’s a garage princess, plus he most likely drives a department vehicle 90 or more percent of the time….
@@robertsturtevant6185 well most people don't use vettes as daily drivers... If you have a spot in the garage that's where you park the fun car.
The cartoon you're thinking of is likely Turbo Teen.
Seeing him transform into a car creeped me out when I was a kid.
Your never finding a new Ferrari for the price of a Stingray C8. Trust me. I own a 2023 C8 and LOVE IT
Yeah I dont know what he was smoking when he said that
He did say A Ferrari, not a NEW Ferrari
Let’s say you do, the cost of insurance and repairs will eat you alive. I’ll gladly take a c8 over a Ferrari.
Yag
@@gangatalishis yeah but that's always been true. Yet people still buy a used Ferrari because they want something more special than a Corvette. And in Wizards particular case those costs are lessened since he can do repairs himself.
Semi rare car right there. A non-Z06 FRC with a manual transmission. Looks clean...
All FRCs were manual transmissions
@@07028 That’s what I was about to say, lol
I prefer much more the targa with the traditional glass hatch.
Also has the non auto HVAC controls and base seats, but the lightest non Z06 you can get!
The FRC is much stiffer, but it doesn't have the aluminum frame does it?
A trick to do a quick mileage check on the C5, without the warning messages getting in the way, is leave the ign. off and just turn on the headlights.
You are a great mechanic. I wish there was more shops like yours where people dont have to be worried about worse problems then when the car went in and also getting ripped off. You are a credit to your profession. Also enjoy your new channel. Take care!
I didn't comment in the last one but a Huge Thank You to Mrs. Wizards Interior Segments. Yes of course I am going to scroll past a car that's interior is well known to me. On the other hand as in this video I get a closer look at this C5 vette interior, which is interesting to me. It makes this show pretty much the best informative car wizardry show currently existing on utube. Thanks to The Wizard Family 🙏❤️
I've had an 03 for 3 years now. I love this car. So much fun. And it was Turbo Teen and he turned into a Trans Am
I drove my dad’s c5 convertible from Pa..to FLA..great cars , it’s been in the family for 15 years.
$2K is nothing nowdays
sad but true...
like 1.2K ! I certainly agree with you, the C5 is the best car for the money...period!
I'm in the market for a C5 Corvette. I had done a little research and learned about the common problems. Mainly the EBCM (there's still more including the usual when cars get older), which for the 97-2000 was almost not rebuildable. But the 01-04 are. But at this point in time, there are solutions. So I'm going back and forth in including all the model years or focus on certain years. Also, it is a pretty cool C5 for sure.
Doesn't really matter which model year you get. Just get one, you won't regret it.
try to get a manual it's more fun to drive. I have a c5 auto and a c7 manual. I enjoy them both. we get more looks in the c5 surprisingly
@@linleyvanacore3036 I've thought about about get a Manual C5. But since I already Focus ST that's manual, and I'm going for daily-driving a Corvette (even taking it to road-trips), I would go towards the Automatic C5 just to start off with Corvette ownership.
Go with 2003. All the major issues were resolved by then. 2004 C5’s are great also. Last year of the C5, however the fuel system in 2004 was redesigned and used for the C6 generation. The fuel filter, pressure regulator is all part of the fuel pump assembly in the 04’s and inside the fuel tank. In the 03’s it’s accessible outside of the fuel tank on the frame rail. Great corvettes.
FYI, you can't fix the 97-2000 Corvette ECBMs. 2001-2004 are fixable however.
I'm surprised that no one else noticed an omission @ the very beginning: The wizard denied shooting the sheriff, but he said nothing about the deputy...
🎶
Nice rare hard top coup with a trunk. They are better at handling than the hatch back with the removable top. $2000.00 to bring a Corvette up to snuff is cheap.
Rare for a non-Z06 C5 indeed.
I wish Mrs wizard would have looked in the trunk
I had the pleasure of replacing the harmonic balancer on my LS2 powered C6. It took 2 days on the garage floor. at first I thought the alternator was dropping out under hard acceleration, it was actually the crank pulley slipping on what was left of the rubber in the damper.
Interesting that the Corvette has the same Safety sticker on the visor that says that "The BACK SEAT is the SAFEST place for children"
C5 EBCMs arent repairable its said on the forums at least from 97-00 so a video on that would be an amazing service to the corvette community
LS1 motors are designed by nature to run hot. 230 is normal operating temp when it is 100+ degrees outside. The fans on a base C5 turn on at 218 and 232.
A 160 thermostat is actually preventing the car to get up to normal temp and run properly. During the summer, Mine would hit 230 easily so I put in a Dewitts Radiator and dewitts fan. It now sits around 195 to 215 in 100 degree weather.
As far as clearing the messages, just hit the reset button on the DIC controls, and the messages will clear.
I own and love my C5 and have done alot of work on it.
It’s normal for a c5 to go 235+ degrees stuck in traffic at idle on a hot day , have to tune the fans to come on sooner to change that
The C4 LT4s made more power than the LS1. They just rated it as having 330 HP to entice buyers to get a C5. Those LT4s really made closer to 350-360 HP based on Dyno numbers
That's nice to know - there's a channel - Fanatic Builds - where the guy is dropping an LT4 into an old Spitfire or something. It's the best restomod build on the internet, but I didn't know this about that engine.... or maybe that was the LS4... IDK.
$2k is getting off for free with parts and labour on almost any car repair today.
C5 with an LS is the best buy for a sports car IMO.
It’s true. I used to hate these things up until a few few years ago when when I could appreciate them for what they are.
@@2steaksandwiches665 They were a great performance car for the money even when they were new. They're still a great value today. You can find C5s for less than the price of a Honda Civic all day long.
If you can fix the 1st gen ABS module, you will be inundated with requests, because this is what's holding up many pre-2001 C5s.
Not sure if it had one but on the C6 there is a rubber air dam that helps scoop air up. Most people remove it when they put aftermarket springs on because it scrapes. Then they complain about overheating issues when driving hard or on a really hot day.
yup the c5 has that too.. and a lot of grass and leaves gets shoved up on the radiator and blocks the airflow.. I noticed on this car it has an oil cooler that was mounted before the radiator that I believe is after market
Neighbors phoning and making complaints that aren't Justified need to be offered the threat of prosecution for misuse of police resources
That's a great year in terms of reliability and long term use. LS1 was a super solid engine.
More Corvettes! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sold my 2000 millennium yellow C5 2 months ago. I've had a C4, C6 and C7 and while all had their good points I really prefer the C5 and the fact is was a 6 speed manual made it that much more fun to drive...
@6:30 ...."Not that he would considering that he's in law enforcement."
HAH!!! Yeah right! LOL!
fixed roof coupe is GOATED if u don't wanna swing a z06
C5 is the best looking Corvette ever
The New C8 looks suck ! I prefer the C5 !
Not subjective at all. What's the best colour, just so I know when shopping?
That cartoon you're referring to was called, 'Turbo Teen'. That car / boy was actually modeled after a 3rd gen Trans Am, not a Corvette.
I'm surprised it wasn't pointed out that this Corvette is a two year only Fixed Roof Coupé model which was supposed to be the new cheap base model Corvette. This body style later became the Z06.
This is what has kept me in Vettes (on my 6th, a C7 Z51 Conv 7MT and probably my last, no stick in C8) is what I could afford to buy rather than own. 2K in Vette repairs, now translate that into Ferrari, Porsche or Lambo dollars, they are all wondrous to drive and even more wondrous to get repaired.
...mmm $2,000 ! WHOOP DEE DOO ...that is less then a few car payments , in order to keep it on the road !
Always nice to see a 5.7 tundra in the background.
I would rather have a C5 as well.
They look great! They haul ass too!
Repairing exotic cars in Newton brings in money to the community.
the C5 was a game changer. I towed quite a few automatic C5's years back for shift linkages going bad at the shifter. the C5 has an LS1 not LT1..
I had an 02 C5 with Corsa. Car feels like a go kart, in a good way
As mentioned a couple of time the 97-00 EBCMs are NOT repairable … only the 01+ can be resoldered like mentioned…. The pre 01 cars EBCM is resin filled and cannot be opened up enough to get to the soldering points.
Hi car wizard I believe it was called turbo teen from 1984
There was this car cartoon I liked as a kid, probably saw it around 90.... It was old when I saw it, but I liked it and never knew the name... Some car that I remember having a squirrel or racoons tail on the antenna.
Never was able to tape it, so I only saw it a few times.
Friend of mine replaced the driver's visor in his C5 with one that had the Homelink option built in, kinda cool to add
try turning the parking lights on with key off. the odometer should come on. Or try hitting the reset button to get rid of the warning messages.
As a kid, I always loved the corvette. However, after I became a mechanic myself, and got the chance to work on them, I wouldn't have one as a gift. Any generation.
I recently took my Cadillac into the dealer for a recall. A corvette owner pulled in before me. I got out of my car and was at the desk, and the corvette owner was still struggling to get out of his car.
It's worth trying a block test. Mine would occasionally show the same temperature fluctuations, and there was a head gasket failure. Strangely enough there was no smoke out of the tailpipe, so we only found out after the block test.
More corvette content Wizard!😊
I did a steering rack, new 02 sensors, rear main seal, a few other oil leak repairs and new tires when I got my 03 C5. Drove like a dream!! But had to sell when I moved bc it didn’t have a cat. 😅
I have a c5 and c8. The c8 is amazing but I still appreciate the c5.
The cartoon was Turbo Teen!
make the C5 EBCM repair a video, they are claimed to be unrepairable from 97-00
trying to run out mr and mrs wizard should be a crime lol. dont ever stop with your videos. thank you.
The cartoon was TURBO TEEN
True, but TurboTeen was clearly a Firebird/Trans Am. ruclips.net/video/j18e_ID-DpA/видео.html
I've owned a C2 '65 Coupe. In the late 80s and 90s I wrenched at a Corvette specialty shop. I specialized in C4s. When the C5 came out we were taken back. OBDII just came along. C5s were kind of polarizing when they came out. But in hindsight they're great cars. The styling has held up to the test of time very well. Beautiful cars. And FAR easier to service than the stuff made now.
I don't like the C8. They look like crap. But it's hard to crumb on the styling of the C5 or C6 or C7. And I really like the C7.
Just my two cents for anybody willing to listen.
160 thermostat is too low. 180 is optimum for the ECM.
For what you can still get for the price these c5 corvettes are a steal.
I owned a brand new loaded '73 corvette. I loved it. The '74s however I thought were ugly with the new rear bumper. Then I would say the C5s would by my second choice.
That sherrif sounds like a pretty upstanding guy, glad to know he only goes "legal" speeds in his cars
I believe that engine is an LS1, not an LT1.
Definitely an LS1. C5 came out in 97 and was introduction of the LS1. Fbodies got it in 98.
That's weird.. Doesn't he not realize what he is talking about?
@@IROC-Z28 he seemed to correct it later in the video. Probably a slip of the tongue.
@@howardscott7521 yeah, maybe slightly, but it's definitely a WTF?
‘99 Corvette Coupe owner. Fantastic bullet proof car that is ALOT of fun.
Dam well tooken care off ,those seats
If someone's paying Ferrari money for a C8...that dealer saw them coming a mile away.
Well, most people couldn’t afford a valve stem cap for a Ferrari let alone repair costs. I never understood the attraction to those high buck Euro shitboxes. Italians have great food, art and design, but if it has an engine, run away from it.
The cartoon you were trying to remember was "Hoddy Doody goes to Las Vegas."
Wow! I hope the Wizard's not mistaken about fixing a "99 EBCM!!!
If you can fix the 97-00 Corvette ABS module, you’ll be a hero in the Corvette world.
TURBO TEEN, LMAO! I havent thought of that cartoon in years
The cartoon was called Turbo Teen, but sorry to say he turned into a Pontiac Firebird not a Corvette.
“I don’t think viagra is gonna fix that” is the most corvette appropiate joke😂
Always love waking up to a car wizard video 😎
Me toooooo
What about those mobile guys from TRIPPLE, something that tells poor unsuspecting people..
"Let me test your battery, see it's dead, shows them the low meter reading, and SELLS THEM a new battery. Guy tried it on me. I said Jump it," he replied," he replied, "He replied that it would damage your alternator. "
Wow
we use the same pen light. couldn't live without it
The only proper response to the haters and "it's a chop shop" calling neighbours, is a famous quote from a famous Midwestern Governor and VP candidate: "Mind your own damn business!"
Cool C5 but I'm drooling over that black Testarossa lookin like the Batmobile
I have a C5 convertible and I LOVE IT(despite it being down temporarily for repairs).
Ditto!
@@CorkVanDenHandel Which year model you have? Mine is a 2002 in Metallic Silver.
@@klaytonmayeaux8966 I have a 2003 50th AE M6 roadster. I was shopping for a 2004 Le Mans edition when I ran across this 2003 in beautiful condition with less than 21k miles on it. Probably the best car I've ever owned. Certainly one of the most fun to drive!
@@klaytonmayeaux8966 I have an 02 convertible too.. It needs a harmonic balancer.. it's starting to wobble at idle. going to buy the summit racing one that has no rubber in it. what is wrong with yours?
I have a 99 like this one. Pewter metallic w only 25k miles. This is a hardtop or called an FRC (Fixed Roof Coupe). That divider behind the seats separates the trunk space which you did not open. Same trunk space as the convertible. Looks better than the coupe w the glass hatch in the rear.
That particular one is the precursor to the ZO6 because that’ was called a fixed roof coupe as they were called back then it’s not a convertible and it doesn’t have a top that is removable and it has a different back glass
I miss my old Torch Red C5. Beautiful!
I expect he simply misspoke regarding the engine designation.
Love these cars. Got a 99 C5 with 266k miles going strong.
The Sheriff put a Corvette badge on a Rx7 to keep the Rubes happy😂
be happy its 2k i wish that was the fix-it price for my procharged C6 /twin-turbo C7Z / C8Z 🤣
Please don't reflow the solder. Remove the old solder and make a fresh connection.
Have they finally allowed Footloose dancing there? 😮😅
Love C5s as well, but for the manual, every clutch job is a pain. Exhaust, shields, torque tube etc all have to come off. That sucks
Yes but one person can do it in a weekend in their driveway . It’s an easy car to work on for the most part.
the door lock may not be a problem, it might be programmed that way. our 2000 corvette is programmed so the drivers door unlocks with the first press of the key fob. press two times to unlock pass door
Great car for the sheriff because we all know he will never have to give his John Hancock on the bottom of a triplicate form.
4:26 C5 owner & can back this up. The only time I've seen it do this is being stuck in traffic in the middle of summer. Unfortunately, the OEM hood doesn't allow for very much top ventilation compared to the sides of the car when in motion. Unfortunately, it can reach that 220 - 230 range in those situations briefly & nothing really you can do about that but also nothing to really worry about either (as long as you don't do it too often).
Yep. The fans are not programmed to come on until above 220 degrees, which is why the LS1 can get up in the 230 range in hot/heavy traffic situations. Fortunately, the engine was designed to run well in the 200 - 230 range.
@@CorkVanDenHandel I forgot about that! That is true! I heard some people getting it re-programmed to come on at 210 or 200 instead so it would cool it down quicker. I don't think mine ever got above 230 ever since I've had it (nearly 2 years) and seemed to be fine at that temp too.
C3 is the best looking Corvettes. put a modern engine and suspension in one and they are perfect.
I noticed Mrs. Wizard has upped her interior game. 👍
Anyone else feeling guilty of speeding through the interior review? Wizard ANGRY!
Maybe produce a better presentation and most wouldn't skim it. Change things up folks want to be entertained.
