  • "Geography is very useful for looking at inequality, because it's so concrete. It's not about social classes, it's not about complicated theories about where we fit in. It is essentially about the streets we live on, the differences between our towns and our cities."
Audio recording of a public talk given by Professor Danny Dorling at Leeds Beckett University on 13 November 2024.
While talking about his latest book, Seven Children: Inequality and Britain's Next Generation, he mentioned his own undergraduate days.
"As a university student, I liked using computers. I wasn't that interested in inequality, but what I began to notice over time, as I stayed in university departments, was that the situation that I was drawing pictures of was getting worse, slowly, worse and worse.
"Over time, I began to think, Oh, it's just me. I'm just looking for bad news stories. But I don't think that anymore. Some of the ones I'll show you or talk about are so extreme that I don't think we're exaggerating when we say that Britain is the most unequal country in Europe, and we're at a high point of inequality in our history."
