Use ramps or jack stands if you are going to be under any vehicle.
NEVER EVER get under a vehicle supported by just a scissor jack!

How to change your oil.
After driving the vehicle for 10 minutes to warm it up, come back and check the oil filter as well as the oil level. You may need to tighten the oil filter with an oil filter wrench.
Supplies;
Oil Filter, Oil Filter wrench, Oil, Oil drain pan, Funnel

Agreed. I only used the jack to lift the body of the vehicle a few inches to get a better shot.

Just a note for some other people: if the fluid is coming out red, that’s your transmission fluid. Put the plug back in immediately.

Some of the benefits of doing your own oil changes are as follows:
-Quality Oil and Filter as most services provide only the cheapest possible which can cost you more in the long run
-You know its done - some companies will rip you off without changing things out.
-you keep track of how your car is looking based on how the oil looks, etc and getting a birds eye view into things.
One of the best ways to save cash and keep an old beater running. Speaking as someone who kept a beater for 10+ years doing full maintenance on it till I could afford a new car. "Dad" is in a position where he has no reason to do so himself, but it takes time to get there.
1. Brakemax lets you choose which oil, and it's itemized on the bill. Of course I have a mazda which uses synthetic, and is more expensive no matter where you go.
2. it's easy to see if the oil is changed by the color on the dipstick.

1) Brakemax looks like is an AZ centric service.
2) In cali we had largely shops that would charge $70+ for an oil change with conventional the last I took my car into one. And quite a few of them were found to charge for the service but not actually perform it, so it varies by location. if I was able to instead get Royal purple + filter for $10 cheaper and just get it done. And that car is still ticking to this day (granted, just about any synthetic is leaps and bounds better than conventional).
3) this is an intro to how to change oil, likely folks referencing this for a good idea of how to get started likely don't know about the color variations and what they mean, whether just dirty or blown gasket.

I would agree to disagree. I've had my oil changed for years at a local place for about $40, and my car runs as great as ever (mind you I just had to rebuild the headgasket last year, did that work myself)... but it's a '98 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L with well over 250k on it. Bought it in 2013 and it only had 90k on it.
Since you fellas sound like you know what you’re talking about, how do you know when to change the oil? Is it every so many miles/klicks you drive? Oh wait, Dad just said every 3,000-5,000 miles. Is there any benefit to doing it more often?
DarKnightKilla13 I used to be able to get an oil change for around $40. Sometimes a little cheaper with a coupon. But now all those places are over $55 WITH a coupon. At that price point it’s worth the hour of my time to do it myself.
I have a dad but he’s never taken the time to teach me anything and just expected me to know. I blew the engine of my first car because I neglected an oil change and he stopped talking to me for months.... thanks for the video cause I still never learned lolol

SAME!!! I didn't know oil or coolant was even a thing when i purchased my car. went for over a year without changing it and my car is pretty old. Ended up stuck on the side of the road with a smoking car that kept overheating. Spent way too much money for the mechanic to tell me i needed to change my oil.

I definitely had to watch this one. My brother just showed me how to change my own oil a couple of weeks ago. He's always done it for me, but he recently got diagnosed with cancer and is starting to lose his mobility (it'sin his lungs and back). These really are great moments to share with the people who look up to you to learn.

youtube is a great resource for how to with mechanics i had to do upper lowerball joints on a my jeep seen a video of these dynamite farmgirl doing it was like wth if she can i can watched a few others but very helpful for practicality of job and confidence of onesself too

@@Slifer8521 He passed peacefully this past September in hospice care. Thank you for asking. I'm still learning handyman tasks to make him proud. I learned to change a clothes dryer door switch last week.
If he were still here, that would've earned me a crisp high five.
I think it's great that you do these videos. I had that Dad that taught me things so I'm set, and I passed those skills to my daughters too. But far too often I meet young people who have no idea so they really need a resource like this. I even met a man in his 30's once who used to make an appointment to take his pick-up in to get the oil CHECKED. I said, "You mean changed, right?" He said, "No, they check the oil for me." Flabbergasted, I popped the hood on his truck and showed him the dipstick and how to check the oil...and all the other fluids. He was stunned how simple it was. And give credit where credit is due: he didn't get his ego in a twist about it. He was grateful for the pointers. :)
Kinda amazed that the mechanic took advantage of him for so long, having him make an appointment and pay for them just taking a minute to check.

My dad passed away in 2012, he tried to teach my sister and I all he could about cars. I learned to change the break pads and tires from him. Thank you for showing me what he didn't get too!!!

This brings back good memories-- my dad taught me how to change oil, and I still have the oil filter wrench he gave me. I changed every quart of oil in that car for the 14 years I owned it. I'm not willing to crawl around on my back to change oil anymore, but if I had to do it I still could.

Unless your dad is grumpy, you should still call him for help. Dads love helping their kids and how fun would it be if you helped him change your oil?
Changing oil is something I've avoided to learn, because I'd hate to screw up our vehicle. We have a 2019 truck, so it goes to the dealership every 5,000 miles.

You know 5,000 miles is overkill, right? Modern cars recommend every 8-10k miles. If you go full synthetic, they recommend you get your oil changed only once a year. So odds are good they're not even bothering to change your oil every time you bring it on.
@@misterkite Kinda hard to do when customers can watch every move that you make with their vehicle! I've always had my oil changed at 5,000 miles.
@@misterkite you say it's overkill but trust me, lots of modern engines especially the turbocharged ones should have it done every 5k maybe even more frequently than that. I've seen people with new cars and they'll change at ~8k but the oil comes out gritty and very burnt. Some engines are different than others however
so at best the oil gets changed every 10,000 but you pay 1 for nothing but coffee and lost time they called stealerships for a reason. stoped going to mine when they never opened hood i was across the parking lot eating outside seen it drive in changed sticker qck vacuum of interior never lifted hood $30 lifetime oil changes for life for a reason 😪😫
I'm a 40yr old lady with no clue about cars at all, and terrified of doing something wrong and bursting into flames or something. Step by step videos like this are a god send - helps me understand that it isn't magic and it isn't something that I should be afraid of at least trying

The concept of an oil change itself is simple: Oil out, filter out; Oil in, filter in.
However some steps should be followed to provide the best experience for both you and your vehicle:
Before you start, open oil cap and pull dipstick to drain oil quicker
Remove the filter BEFORE you drain the oil, so no old oil from oil filter assembly will remain in the engine
Once you remove the oil drain plug wait at least until the oil is draining in drops before you screw it back it in
The Oil Drain Plug has a gasket so it wont leak, usually a copper crush washer(but can also be rubber), replace it with each oil change
Dont. Overtighten. The. Oil. Drain. Plug. Scew.
Lubricate the seal on the new oil filter with oil ( old or new, new obvsly better)
Dont use tools to tighten a metal oil filter, just use hands until it wont turn anymore
A Plastic Oil FIlter assembly hast to be tighten to the ends of it threads, with a tool
After change run engine for at least 1 minute, dont play with the gas just let it idle
When its idling keep the hood open, and keep an eye on the gauges for warnings ( on older cars a oil pressure light, looks like oil can, will light up with ignition on but should go off once engine is running) ,
but also check the engine, filter and plug
check again after some miles
Obviously use correct filter and oil (ask mechanic/dealer/auto parts store/ google, double check!)

It's a good idea to use rubber gloves when removing the oil filter and plug.
and
Avoid changing the oil until your car has cooled down. Hot oil isn't fun to get on you.

Thank you for your videos! My daughter's Dad was great when they were little, but then decided he didn't have time for them, when they got to be about 8-10 years old. We were married for 10 years before we had kids. We got divorced a couple of years later. They are in their mid-twenties, last night, I realized that they both thought that when adding oil to a car, you do it through the small hole where the dip-stick is. 🤦♀ I've watched your videos for years, I've been Mom and Dad for 16 years. I really appreciate you making the video despite not thinking it's worth your time. My dad would not let me drive any of the family vehicles as a teenager until I knew how to change the oil, change the tires, check the fluids, change the wipers, etc. Many of my friends have called me to help them with flat tires or small issues. Not knowing how to change or check something really makes it hard for someone to understand how it works or why it costs x to have that service done professionally. I noticed they don't always do it right either. They often use cheap oil and they don't always tighten the filter, or OVER TIGHTEN THE FILTER, which can cause problems. Everyone should change their oil at least once.
