    As bass guitarist for a garage-rock band, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) has never had trouble getting a girlfriend; usually, the problem is getting rid of them. But when Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) skates into his heart, he finds she has the most troublesome baggage of all: an army of ex-boyfriends who will stop at nothing to eliminate him from her list of suitors.

    So, a fan of the comic here
    First, the reason why Scott sees Ramona in his sleep is because (as the comic explains) Ramona uses a thing called subspace highway, which is a kind of reality-bending highway that just happens to pass through Scott's head, she uses it to deliver packages faster.
    And second, at the end, the door is a kind of metaphore about both starting a new life, entering a new chapter of their lives, the comic and the movie are so different from each other, but this exact part is the same in both comic and movie.
    Also, Nega Scott isn't there because he was an ex now, in the comic is used to tell the way Scott embraces the bad things he have done in order to start being a better person. As the movie, in the comics Scott feels like a cool guy, but in the comic he isn't aware of all the damage he has donde to others.

    • @VodkaHellstorm
      @VodkaHellstorm Год назад +51

      Yeah, I love the Nega Scott thing. Him being a "really nice guy" is basically all we get in the movie adaptation that says that Scott is a fucking asshole, but I like to imagine him having brunch with Nega Scott is actually the start of his journey to becoming the person he wants to be.

    • @r_sketchum6365

      It would be good to point out that in the comics, Scott mind is pretty much head empty (which is why Ramona uses it to travel) and Gideon took full advantage of that to alter some of his memories which is why he thinks for example Envy is a toxic ex when he was the shitty boyfriend all along. Probably also explains why the story is full of videogame references, it is probably all that crosses his mind as the man-child he is

  • @Geedly
    @Geedly Год назад +123

    The weird doors (and Ramona’s bottomless bag) are entrances to subspace, which allows people to travel long distances by moving through the subconscious of others (this is also why Ramona is in Scot’s dreams).
    It’s apparently an established thing in the Scot Pilgrim universe which they just don’t know about in Canada.
    Oh and it’s also the reason Ramona actually delivers Scot’s package instead of some other person, since she’s so efficient she’s the only delivery person for the whole of Toronto

    There's something that not a lot of people notice about this, but it's a cool behind the scenes fact. The scene where Lucas Lee walks onto the set has the normal Universal theme playing. Since they were the distribution studio they basically said that in order to have the 8-Bit logo at the beginning of the movie, legally speaking they had to use the normal version somewhere in the film. So they incorporated it into that scene.

    A little of context:
    In the comics Nega Scott is the worst side of Scott Pilgrim, he is literally made by the feelings of pain and suffering of all people that Scott hurt in the past + the remorse and denial that he feels about what he did.
    After a long and a very cool fight, Scott finally accepts his mistakes, grown up, decides that the only good that he can do is fix everything and that he has to recover Ramona, finally defeating Nega Scott in the process

    Scott Pilgrim, based on the graphic novel, kinda lives in his own mind, there's a lot kinda missing which i wished they had put in but it just woulda been too long, another character named Lisa Miller was a friend of Scott's in high school, she gets introduced to Ramona in Vol 4 of the series and brings out the jealousy in Ramona. The chip on Ramona's neck is described to be made by Gideon and when she gets certain negative mood swings, it causes this glow to come from her head. It's a very creative series if you get a chance to read it.

    Scott Pilgrim was one of those stories that perfectly blended with Edgar Wright's style, though at the same time it cut a lot out because the sixth and final novel wasn't out, even then a lot got left out or changed, I would recommend the graphic novels they're a lot of fun and Ramona's flashbacks are drawn in that style. There's a lot of easter eggs in it as well, you will notice a lot of X and Os, both associated with Scott since he dances the line of being an Evil Ex (X) by being an obliviously shitty person (Ramona is too, being pretty cold and distant a lot of the times, but they both do work on being better), but he also has Zero motifs because he's fighting the Seven.
    With hindsight it's a blockbuster cast, filled with a lot of past and future superheroes, but of them all I think Kieran Culkin (brother of Macaulay of Home Alone fame) absolutely nailed it as Wallace.
    The whole dream stuff is kinda explained but not super in-depth, basically in the universe Ramona is able to traverse through dreams but much of this is reality, just enhanced for video game physics and whatnot, and yes most of the Evil Exes do burst into coins in the books as well, the only one who doesn't explodes into woodland creatures - it's a Sonic reference.

    I absolutely love this movie and anytime I see it, it reminds me of when my older sister and I tried to show our dad the movie and he thought it was bad and ridiculous. It was only when I told him it was based on a comic that he cut the movie some slack. He’s still not a big fan of it but he’s told me he understands the appeal!!

    I think Scott Pilgrim vs the World showed that even the toughest girl or boy can be softened by an awkward one, who's played video games his entire life lol. I'm not ashamed to admit I had a crush on Scott, our adorable heroic idiot, when I saw the movie at a drive-in a couple years ago. Anyway, how about Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle or My Spy, with Dave Bautista?❤
    Have a good day!😁

    A rather important thing that has been mentioned a few times in the coments: The movie was made while the last volume of the comics was being written, so the ending of the movie influenced the ending of the comics. However, that's not the full story. The movie originally had a different ending where Scott gets back together with Knives and Ramona is finally free to move on, however, test audiences didn't really take too kindly to that, since Knives really does deserve better than Scott, so the current ending where he and Ramona end up together as blank slates was made.

    Something to point out, there is a concept in video games called "Hammer Space" which is a reference to video game characters carrying so much stuff and no storage bags or pockets at all (Zelda games are a big part of this concept). So in the fight with Ramona vs Roxy, Ramona pulling a hammer out of a bag it wouldn't feasibly fit in is a nod to this concept.

    They don't explain in the movie (I only know this word of mouth by friends who read it) but this world is like a video game. Ramona's bag is like a mini dimension and she is in his head because she uses interdimensional highways to travel and one runs through Scott's head. Scott always thought he was normal but he also has powers/abilities like the rest like in a game and fought off a bunch of guys and a demon/dragon (I think) to rescue and date Kim.

    Oop I wanted to mention this earlier but I forgot, the soundtrack for this movie was executive produced by legendary music producer, Niger Godrich, who is responsible for producing many of Radiohead's albums. Edgar Wright is a Radiohead fan and there's even a couple sneaky references to the band placed in this movie, specifically in that scene with Scott and Knives at the Music store

    Also, some of the cast did a table read of this movie during the lockdown of 2020, and the guy who did the artwork actually created drawings throughout the table read to be auctioned off for charity. Michael Cera actually played the guitar, I believe he was the only one who knew how to play their instrument; everyone else had to be taught.

    My biggest complaint about the COMPLAINTS of this movie are when people say "Scott's an asshole how can you like him?" The whole POINT is that he IS an asshole, even his close friends constantly say things like "if your life had a face I would punch it" and warning Knives to "run." He learns to become better, as does Ramona.

    It's also funny how even with the awkwardness Scott has especially when trying to flirt with Ramona and ask her out in the movie, he's got several ex girlfriends mentioned and featured in the comics so he unironically gets girls and has charm/rizz. There are several stuff from the comics that wasn't shown in the movie such as Scott growing more and how Stephen, lead singer of Sex Bob-Omb, finds out he's bisexual and ends up with a boyfriend. Also knowing the casting, that just means Scott is dating Royal Pain/Huntress with Superman and Captain America as her exes while Scott's ex is Captain Marvel.
    Movie fact: Michael Cera actually has years of experience playing the bass before the movie which means the others in the cast had to learn from scratch while Cera himself already knows what he's doing and is the Todd among everyone else. While everyone was learning lessons plus having to learn how to play songs for the movie and extended album, the only work Cera had to do was learn how to dumb his skills down so that Todd and everyone else would be the ones looking good.

    Even though I love this movie, I still think it's about time that live-action Scott Pilgrim gets the Netflix treatment and gets re-made with each of the graphic novels getting it's own season that has about 4 to 6 episodes each season. That way it expands on the stuff from the books that didn't make it into the movie. Like Scott facing Knives' dad, or Envy and Ramona finding out that Todd cheated on them with each other, and was also cheating on her with their cyborg drummer.

Tim, not sure if you've seen it already, but I'd definitely recommend Superman Returns from 2006 starring Brandon Routh, who I think is great in this movie as Todd the Vegan lol. But fr Superman Returns gets a pretty bad rap, or at least it used to, maybe people have come around a little recently. I think if you put out a reaction, it would remind people of all the redeemable aspects the movie has. It's my second favorite Superman movie after Richard Donner's Superman: The movie from '78, which also demands to be seen by all movie fans, despite those who say it's too cheesy. I respectfully disagree with that and I'd love to know your thoughts!
