Dale Head is named for its position at the head of the Newlands Valley. This stretches away due north for three and a half miles before debouching into the floodplain of the Derwent between Derwentwater and
    Bassenthwaite Lake.
The eastern wall of the valley is formed by the High Spy to Catbells ridge, separating it from Borrowdale. Entering on the western side are a series of side valleys which drain the main mass of the North Western Fells. The source of Newlands Beck does not however flow from the apex of Dale Head as might be supposed from the name. Instead it has its birth at the col between the main summit and the eastern top, High Scawdel (1,815 feet or 553 metres). The northern face of the fell forming the dalehead is ringed with crags. The main faces are Dalehead Crags and Great Gable, not to be confused with the fell of that name.
The southern flank of the fell running down to the summit of the Honister Pass road (1,180 feet or 360 metres) has much gentler slopes, although there is outcropping rock on either side. Buckstone Hows and Yew Crag overshadow the road. From the top of the pass Gatesgarthdale Beck runs north west to Buttermere while Hause Gill flows east to Seatoller and Borrowdale. Across the road is Grey Knotts in the Western Fells.
The ridge to Hindscarth departs north west from the summit of Dale Head, soon narrowing into the fine and airy Hindscarth Edge. Both slopes are rocky, that to the south being known as Molds. Far Tongue Gill descends from the north of the ridge, a tributary of Newlands Beck.
Although High Scawdel stands east of the main summit, the high ground takes a great loop to the south around the head of Newlands Beck. It then drives north to the depression at Wilson's Bield (1,655 feet or 504 metres) before climbing to the summit of High Spy. The rest of the North Western Fells bear no tarns worthy of the name, but Dale Head has two. On the northern slope near the source of Newlands Beck is Dalehead Tarn, while the smaller Launchy Tarn lies near the top of High Scawdel. Dalehead Tarn is a shallow pool providing a popular stopping place for walkers. Its varied flora include water horsetail, sedge and bogbean. Launchy Tarn is smaller and may have been formed by overgrazing and erosion of the underlying peat.

Another cracking Newlands walk in my favourite place in the world, I last did Hindscarth in 2019 with my now 15 year old collie Sam, from Honister to Dale Head, Hindscarth, Scope End and back up via the waterfalls valley to the Tarn and back to Honister bog trotting below Dale Head, epic. Thanks for the memories.

My dad's ashes are spread at the top of Dale Head. Love the area and the views. He lived at Abbeytown and Wigton for a while. Great memories in Cumbria. We moved away, the worst day of my life. Went up there recently with my brother to say hello to my Dad. Say hello to Colin when you go up there. He would appreciate it. Had a great sense of humour too.

This walk brings back great memories of when I did the full Newlands Round circuit back in 2017 Andy. And I agree, that view looking down the Newlands Valley from the summit of Dale Head is hard to beat. Me and Ann get so much pleasure from all your walks and videos with the Rock Star. Keep up the great work my friend. 👍👣🌿⛰😊

Another cracking video, Andy and Billy. We love that route, especially when you get the afternoon sun shining on the top of Maiden Moor and Catbells. Dale Head was one of our first higher fells and we went the same way as you, from Honister. We couldn't believe it when we popped out by the cairn and saw that view. We were hooked, too. Hi Andy. Once again, beautifully shot with stunning views. Done part of that route, but up through the old mine workings from Borrowdale to Dale Head tarn, then upon to Dale Head. That's a leg burner going up there. Yes, it's one of the best views in the Lakes looking down Newlands valley. From there we made our way over to Buttermere for a few days at the YHA, then back to Borrowdale via Fleetwith Pike. I've had to do the moral thing and subscribe, fantastic videos. Cheers, Ozzy.

It looks a smashing route up with fab views all round. The lambs looked full of ittoo. Great to see them jumping around like that. Billy looked like he enjoyed it. What a cracking day you had.

Fabulous video of one of my favourite circuits, Andy. I so enjoyed this one and you're right, it doesn't matter how many times you do the same walk, there's always something different, be it weather, season, even down to what wildlife and flora you might see on the route. Loved those drone shots of you and Billy walking, especially up Scope End, gives a really good idea of the scale of the place. And I bet if Billy were left to his own devices, he'd have had a dry stone wall built from the rocks from that streambed! 🤣 One glimpse on the route up the Hindscarth ridge of the tiny reservoir down the other side up Scope Beck reminded me I haven't been up that valley for a while either. So much to do!

Brilliant video Andy. Once again it was lovely to meet you both. After seeing your footage from dale head I can see that being one of my next camps in the lake. Looks stunning from all sides. After you left I did a 4min video to camera talking about your channel and Alan’s charity only to come home and find I didn’t turn the bloody mic on so you’ll notice I’ve had to add a voiceover section which just didn’t have the same detail in it. 😞

Awesome video. 👌. Can you send me a grid ref of your start point, please, or a map of this route, please? I'm new to the lakes. Was on Catbells (group walk) on Sunday. Last week of March, I did Barrow and Latrigg before Andrew Gills group walk up Grisedale Pike on the last Sunday of the month. So I've done 4 summits on a fractured ankle bone and a torn main ligament in my right foot. Nearly did Old Man, but the 50mph + gusts were too much in my ankle on my own off the Walna Scar road. I would ❤ to do this route when I'm back there in 3 months' time for the next group walk or even go up for a week on my own and do my own thing. I've subscribed to you and love your walks. Can you please let me know your start and finish point 👉 ❤❤❤❤ Jules

Lovely lovely vid Andy. Can I ask a question please. On some drone footage at the start I could make out a path that goes up the face of Dale Head, from the map it goes over Far Tongue Gill and over the back of Great Gable and cuts up left to the summit of DH. Have you done this path and if so is there any exposure and would you recommend it.
