Hiking The Length of the Brecon Beacons National Park

  • The Beacons Way is a 100 mile linear walk that runs the length of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The walk includes 16 summits including Pen y Fan, Fan y Big and Fan Brycheiniog. It passes through some wild and remote countryside with some tough terrain - it's definitely one of the more challenging hikes I've completed. It took me 6 days to complete the hike, but I would recommend to maybe do it in the eight stages over maybe 8 to 10 days. It's a beautiful walk, and it's one to take your time and enjoy - the 6 days I walked it in felt a little rushed, if I was to do it again I would do it in 8 days.
If you are interested in any of the gear that I have used on this hike, I have made a video of all the kit I've taken and links are available in the description on that video.
Also, below I have added two links to the route and a link to the guide book I read before setting off. The Ordnance Survey page contains a link to the entire Beacons Way walk - I used this route on my OS Maps App on my phone for the hike.
I hope you've enjoyed watching my journey,
    Thanks for stopping by,
    Ryan.

Been looking forward to this & you didn't disappoint. Great to see so many familiar locations as you walked it and you certainly had your fair share of the weather on this hike. Sorry for you that Toby was not at your side I bet you was so glad to see him at the end. Have to say that if anyone is watching this with a view to walking it you did a great sell on the hike with your b-roll, some excellent footage that really gave the viewer a sense of what to expect. I was thrown a few times as to where you were so that made it even more interesting as I thought I knew the beacons very well. I would agree with you about the Black Mountains being your fave part of the parc - it is mine without a doubt. 6 Days is hell of a pace and I am not surprised you were feeling it in the legs and under the eyes.. but well done and thanks for sharing it with us - brill job. atb Al

Well in, mate, that's a bit of an undertaking for sure. Shame about Toby not being with you for this, but glad he's on the mend. I've just completed a marathon viewing of the last 2 videos you put out and being a gear freak, it was good to see what you carry and make comparisons with my own kit. I tell you what, Dragon's Milk would be a great name for a Welsh whiskey, wouldn't it? Nice to see Carreg Cennen castle again, I haven't been there since I was a boy with a school trip for a project we did on Welsh castles, it truly is a spectacular location and I'm surprised it hasn't featured in more box office films! I know how you feel with the knee pain while descending. I invested in a walking staff from a company called Cold Steel and it really helps to support your weight in descent, it's a bit weighty but worth the extra weight just to help you off the hill! Great video again, mate, loving the content! Take care, mate, see you on the next one.👍

As I was watching two thoughts come to mind. 🧐I think you could do with some hiking poles especially for down hill decents (not sure if you use them). Another brilliant video, cheers Ry. Have you considered a garmin fenix for tracking distance/elevation/time, plus it will also be a good back up for maps/route. Also some poles for the descents maybe, black diamond carbon z coming in at 280g. Really look forward to each video, cracking stuff.

Thank you, mate, glad you enjoyed! I tried poles years ago when I was having knee problems. I know they'd help, but I don't get along with them unfortunately. I usually use my Strava, but I could do with using something else that's not going to drain my phone battery, so I will definitely check the Garmin out. Always grateful for some good advice, it's much appreciated. ATB, Ryan.

That was a fabulous watch mate, I was waiting for this video. Really enjoyed it. The first night in the msr tent was crazy, lucky you was able to sort it out. Fair play you looked knackered towards the end. But thank you for taking us on your adventure. If I was to do this hike, I probably do it in stages, not sure if I got the fitness levels to do it in 8 days.hopefully good old nick will do it with me. Catch you soon and hopefully meet you one day 👍

Hello Dai, I don't know if you'll remember, but you met me, Marianne and Toby briefly a few years back. We camped on Fan y Big on a summer's night. You was up there with Badger camping and flying the drone. Toby showed up in your time lapse if I remember correctly. It's a great hike, mate, you'd really enjoy it. Just give yourself plenty of time to do it and take it as it comes. Sorry to hear you lost your best buddy, they make great companions for the outdoors, it's not the same without them is it. I'm sure I'll bump into you again one day. Take it easy, pal.

@@wildaboutwales awe yeah I remember. Honestly didn't know it was you I met, there was teenagers shouting and screaming on crybin early in the morning. Crazy that was,but what a stunning morning. It's good to see you got into the youtubing, it's great you can look back on your adventures. I still keep intouch with the Badger but getting him back out is pretty hard at the moment lol.

@@CampNWildWithTheDragon yes, that's it, those idiots made a right racket. Thank you, mate, appreciate it. To be honest, Dai, I didn't even watch RUclips until you told me about your channel that day. I went home, checked your videos out, enjoyed them and was impressed by the drone footage, then I started watching camping videos all the time. I decided to give it a go myself then earlier on this year, and I've been enjoying it. I probably may never have got into RUclips if I hadn't met you that night, mate...mad that!

Fantastic video , mate. Really enjoyed watching that! It's a shame that Toby had to sit this one out. I'm glad he has recovered well though. How did it feel to have a kip in your own bed after all that? Side note - my gran was born in Deanston and grew up there. She worked in the distillery for years. It's a tiny but beautiful little village. Looking forward to your next wild camp.

Thanks, James, glad you enjoyed, mate. Yes, it was nice to rest up after this one, I had a good chill out for a couple of days. It was probably a good thing Toby didn't join me afterwards, that wind would've been too much for him. That's cool that your gran used to work in the Distillery. I didn't realise Deanston was actually a village, I will have to look it up. Thanks again for watching, mate. Take it easy,!

I've only just started dehydrating my meals, so I've only used the one dehydrator - it's the Homcom 12 tray (link below). It's worked fine for me so far. I was lucky enough to get it when it was on offer for £50. There's also cheaper ones on the market if you shop around. ATB, Ryan.
