Game sounds went weird in this one, I'll fix it in the next
Desert Venice without Venice's shitty downside. They look so fun.
I heard absolutely no game sounds. All I head was you talking.
This is deity right?
@@Aerion_Dirceus I think there is an embargo on game sounds...not sure tho. Early let's play rules are weird.
@@datrandom134 This is Immortal, one step below deity
if he waited a moment with placing the third holy site, he couldve placed it on the + 6 tile below and would have also a suguba with 2 holy sites next to it... anyway, I feel like, you can do simillar thing as with hansas as frederick, where you make a triangle of cities, put 3 sugubas together and 3 holy sites each to be adjacent to 2 sugubas... gold power
As well as faith if you picked desert folklore. Because who needs production when your faithful and treasury can build up entire armies per turn?
@@thelordkragan1888 I dont know honestly, i never liked investimg in faith all too much, since its pretty much useless, if you dont buy army with it... I will probably not be a mali guy, I am the guy who builds huge industrials as germany instead
@@kria008 You will also be able to purchase districts with moksha now.
@@thelordkragan1888 Thats true, they added some value... I was really happy to see reyna in rise and fall, cause I always had a ton of money and couldnt improve my low prod cities, moksha is finally even a choice for me :D
Or he could have put it on the tile above the one he placed it on
You're justifying the reload and there i am reloading autosaves constantly to try and save my one scout from barbs...
I just realized, you have become my #1 choice of youtubers who play Civ. Loving your work Potato!
Dat potato in the end gets me everytime 😂
This is a comment to please the RUclips algorithm.
All hail the mighty Algorithm!
RUclips has become bananas
Holy cow that’s an amazing start. I’m really enjoying your gathering storm gameplay and analysis keep up the good work!
I'm just drooling over the gold generation possibilities of a city in middle of that desert to the north. Love your videos, Potato!
Your speech has improved a lot! I am happy to see all the hard work payed off, good job!
Don't chop too much, with the decreased production from mines, lumber mills are going to be your friend, especially on plains
Will you do an analysis for Eleanor of Aquitaine?
That's what iv been waiting for.
She is a very difficult leader
No.
Her ability is incredibly simple
@@PotatoMcWhiskey it is but what i meant she is super strategic because no other civs near and she is basically is useless
TheAmazingRatedR or if Dido is right next to her.
love the content man been devouring it like a vermicious knid scrams a oompa-loompa
As bad as Venice was in civ 5, my favourite strat was money income so I’m looking forward to this :)
This is one of the new civs that interest me. With their gold and faith bonuses, you could have two very easy sources of buying an army as needed.
It's very interesting to see an economy oriented game, it gives some flavor and deviation from the usual playstyle/formula. I like this! Keep changing it up Potato :)
4.1 faith on turn 2. Move aside Indonesia, Mali gets first pick at pantheon now
Too bad Earth Goddess (+1 faith on tiles with charming or better appeal) wouldn't work well with Mali's Mine addiction. All the other Pantheons are relatively easier to get.
@@TwistedNegative I have found the computer pretty heavily favors deserts giving holy sites adjacency bonuses, which is very useful for musa. It's nice to know you're almost guaranteed it if you want it
Luckily, Indonesia and Mali will probably choose different pantheons anyway, so it's not game-ruining if you play Gitarja and Mali is in the game.
@@TrevorCaldwell might be a problem for her in multiplayer but I would agree vs comp this is unlikely to change much, unless both want faith for clearing.
Towards the 3rd minute I am screaming DONT GET A BUILDER TILL YOU GOT MINING BRO
Well, you are famous enough that Firaxis gave you an achievement of your own. "Po-tay-toes! - As Pachacuti, construct a Terrace Farm that is adjacent to 2 Aqueducts and 4 Mountains"
Thanks for the new series!
Or LotR reference...
@@ann-mariemanwaring3552 Well, we all know but I was going for an ego boost here. :)
So that second city should have been one tile to the right. Desert floodplains = flat desert tiles = +1 gold/turn. The floodplains would have allowed farms and rapid growth , allowing you to work the desert hills tiles, and the +6 gold per trade route out of that city is absolutely killer. In fact, desert floodplains are almost unfairly overpowered for Mali.
I think you need to plan a "trade" city with the Mali, all flat desert tiles and send all you traders to it, to Min/max.
The Eleanor Dev Livestream showed the Mali being eliminated very early by Sweden even on King level, so I must concur with your estimation of Mali's strengths/weaknesses,
I'm actually glad you restarted that turn because it's just too good to pass up
Your content is awesome. Best of the best out there. Can't have it enough. :)
Thank you, and keep up the good work.
I got a quick question. Why not build the holy site in the capital on one of the flat desert tiles to get some value of it? Better to save the hills for mines.
I can't speak for Potato, but it did cost 25G more iirc, so maybe that's why.
@@S23K between the missed gold from the potential mine and missed gold from not having flat desert tiles for the trade route, it prob would have paid for itself.
@@adryandawnstarr477 Having a desert tile occupied by districts/wonders doesn't reduce your bonus gold from trade routes iirc.
@@adryandawnstarr477 Yes it would over time, civ is a fine balance of planning for the future and rushing important things asap. in multiplayer, I often play +1faith+1gold policy card instead of +1 production just to get that pantheon asap even thou the production card is much much better. And buying tons of tiles is the number one mistake new players make, as long as you settle cities only 3 tiles apart there is no need to purchase a single tile, save the gold for units.
@@dracma127 what i meant was. I think it would have been little more optimal for him to have bought one of the flat desert tiles in the capital to have but his holy site on. It would have netted him a one more faith per turn and he would have had a flat desert tile he lacked when he started his first trade route to get the extra gold. its really a small thing i admit. but it was something i noticed was weird. its a new civ.
I would’ve placed the holy sit on the +6 flat desert tile. Leaving as much desert hills as possible intact for Petra mines.
Hey that's immortal not emperor
correct
@@PotatoMcWhiskey first of all how daRE YOU?
Where he puts his warrior at 13:30 would make a incredible industrial zone. Dont know if he notices it later in the video, so i'll keep watching i guess.
Yes, finally there will be a full Game of the Mali :)
Played Mali on Prince Earth True Start Location (nw Africa). The game pretty much played itself - by turn 20 i had loyaltied the capitols of Egypt (central north Africa) and Arabia (Suess Africa). Turn 141, out of the blue, it was faith vic purely on missionaries.
An expected surprise is no surprise at all!
Nice Dune reference with the "Tanzerouft" Basin
I think Moksha is a better first governor buy for Mali. You can use faith to buy your religion as fast as possible, and Moksha will spread your religion to your other cities without need of missionaries. Gun strait for his promotion to buy districts with faith, and every 5 turns move him to a new city and go on a spending spree. If you get that 25% faith bump for buying buildings as well slow building them, it is going to be stupid how much you can purchase.
You might be right
problem is that Mali doesn't get their 30% production Malus towards Districts and Wonders so it's better to slow-build those and buy buildings/units
I have been living by the whiskey philosophy of am I having fun playing the game? If restarting means I'm having more fun than I do it. I started the game on settlers, I am now playing on King and crushing. I still have some details I got to iron out and start paying attention a little more. But I am having a lot of fun playing this game especially with the culture wins
Been lookin' forward to this series
Dude this map is amazing. You had so much space.
I don't have a computer that is capable of playing this game, however, because of your videos, I am considering purchasing a new computer just so I can play this game. Thanks for the videos!
I dug your Maori run; hadn't subscribed to you before that, looking forward to this one.
Wow I am not used to potatoes old videos. He sounds like he hasn't slept for 2 weeks
When you’re going back to old civs after doing all the new ones, maybe go for a diplo victory with pericles? Or Egypt, who I think are getting flood plain changes with this exp
All aboard the hype train! Im not sure why, but im super interested in this Civ's playstyle.
It's different! And it allows us to make use of poor terrain.
why don't you build the holy site on the +6 flat dessert? Those hills are important for money aren't they?
Also ruhr valley + petra on your capital.
River Adjacency
Praise the gold. It is the Mansa Way.
Love seeing the Mali gameplay Potato! Would it not have been better to settle to the southwest of that first city and save the 3 production wooded hill you settled on? Keep up the good work, can't wait to play GS next week!
The map generation looks fantastic. Have they updated it with the new expansion?
Did you have barbs turned off or was it just super lucky you had no barb camps?
So I see all those new toggles for things like river and mountain labels but heavens to Betsy that is a big QoL hit because I'm almost certain they still haven't implemented setting defaults for those in the options.
You should build the Scout first and gain more game scores. The golden age will allow us to purchase settlers and expand quickly.
ITS MALI TIME!!!
Wait, that's not right...
DrAvatar
That’s Kupe’s new catch phrase.
Every time you crush a potential PetRuhr desert hill I cry a little on the inside :'(
Also, ideal district placement might end up being a little like the Hansa/Commercial Hub diamonds for Germany, only with Holy Sites and Sugubas.
Potato was at war with Hungary and he had to buy units when he had a useless warrior just fortifying nothing near the city state.
Really enjoying the game so far!
FINALLY SOMEONE PLAYS MALI
I think if he had known about the flat desert tile mechanic with trade routes, then placing the first holy site on a flat desert tile would be better, saves one petra hill and then the commercial hub could be on the grassland river instead. Saves 2 amazing workable tiles and makes use of 2 otherwise useless tiles for districts. But there is a lot of mechanics to get used to with this civ.
Do you run the video at 1.5x speed and comment over it later, or are you just that fast? This is such a quick pace. Lovely to watch!
ill watch em as soon as u make em, more pls
The mali seem so cool to play
We need to know what happens. Keep going!
So, the new achievements got updated into the game yesterday. What do you think of it? Po-tay-toes is going to be a pain to get, I can tell already.
Did you say 5 THOUSAND gold per turn? Oh boy, am I excited to see this.
Holy shit I was waiting for so long for someone to do a long LP of Mali. Thank you!

Potato you used to show us the game creation screen in a lot of your previous series, is there a reason you haven't done it for Gathering Storm?
Should have moved over ones more to keep the forest hill then made a lumber mill also as Mali you’ll need to worry about sand storms
On your third city, should you put your holy site on northeast hex of where you placed thus allowing a +6 Suguba near 2 Holy sites?
Not really super important imo
Yes! Mali! Nice pick
Hi Potato! Which mods do you use with your Civilization 6? Thanks for the video by the way, love Mali, and I can't wait to play the mighty Mansa Musa! :D
"I want to settle wide with the Mali"
*settles 4 tiles away from capital
Settling wide = lots of densely settled cities covering a lot of territory. Settling tall = building a few cities with a ton of growth and population while maximizing the distance between them.
U actuallt played Mali!!! Yay
3 episodes a day please. 1 jsut isn't enough
GOLD!!! GIVE ME MOOOOONNNNAAAAAYYY
I feel dumb, I clicked the Begin Game icon.
Lets have a new LP Mali video! On Diety as well!
As a point of discussion rather than criticism: Is investing in Pingala really worth it if you're going to limit the city's growth with a lot of 3-tile settles?
Might still be worth it even with a few population but that's 3 whole Governor titles for a city struggling to grow beyond size 5 that's losing half its workable tile yields to neighbors. Actually, Pingala might simply not be appropriate for Mali as a general rule (decisions always vary by game, of course), due to how much they're looking at Desert tiles and Mines, ie tiles and improvements which don't generate Food. Pingala might be SO overpowered in this build that it's still worth. :O
Here's one more for the algorithm!
One small request: can you turn the game sounds up please? I could be wrong (watching on my laptop) but I think it may even be off entirely. Cheers :)
Edit - now I see your pinned comment - that's what I get by watching the vid too early :P
Who's you're favorite of the new civs so far
Mali is potentially the most overpowered civ in the game... +4 gold for every mine regardless of anything else? dang..
So... Potato... How is that Religion going? Ganna get good use out of that +2 era score, right? :P
This is a comment to please the RUclips algorithm. So i don't miss a new vid
What system are you running? Movement seems very quick. In late games in CIV 6, turns take about 10-15 seconds on my machine. Cheers for your help.
good stuff
Hey Potato, what do you think about Take-Two Interactive sneaking the Red Shell analytic software into Gathering Storm? It is in the EULA... but seriously, who reads those?
Why is it that you don't get scouts early though? Especially given the boosts that exploring the map usually give you compliment research paths well.
Mali gameplay wooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make the Climate Chaotic bwahahahah... I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY Dx
hi, I love your games, they are encouraging me to play more seriously.
I'm relatively new to the game (never really played full on) how come you are getting +6 faith on holy sites when in my game I am only getting +2 or +3 ?
I am selecting holy site spots surrounded by the same tiles as your selections. I must be missing something important.
I found the problem, you selected desert folklore as your pantheon. thank you
Mali is a bit over powerd if he is in the right place
3 episodes today?
nah that was a special occasion
@@PotatoMcWhiskey Sad :(
@@PotatoMcWhiskey "While we are exploring all the new civilizations in gathering storm I am going to make an effort that on the first day that I release a new series starts, I am going to make an effort to release 3 videos" So what you meant was just the first one, not all. I, like Jonathan, thought there would be 3 episodes as that was the set expectation. I would suggest putting that fact that it is only one in the show notes and not on comment 20-whatever incase others are looking.
Sorry, that sounded bitchy. My inner Lawyer came out there. What I meant to say was I 2 R SAD
Sometimes I simply can't keep to the plans I laid sadly
This is much better to the game you played live. You read the twitch chat too quickly and your thoughts are just more scattered. Without chat it's much more entertaining as I get to follow your thought process as you play.
This is a comment to please the RUclips algorithm
How slow is the start with Mali?
Does "-1 Production from Mines" mean that the tile loses Production or just keeps its base?
Petra! Petra! Petra!
So, I'm not sure, does Mali have a rough/slow start? Hehe
It feels very oppressing without the game sounds xD anyways... Thanks for making my hype higher and higher at each episod man!
Is this expansion Rise and Fall compatible? Will you be able to play with Rise and Fall leaders and Gathering storm leaders at the same time?
يا هلا بالشباب
Ilkum gives 30% benefit when buying builders too right?
What buffs or changes are there to the other civs like the Zulu and Egypt? Can you say?
I'd stick with the original site for the commercial hub. Why kill future Petra hills? Now it looks like you'll want to put Petra in Timbuktu.
Also, Shouldn't you faith purchase missionaries right away?
