I don't understand how this guy is so good. Every game I play makes me start next to three barbarians, which one always scouts me and produces like 5 warriors and they just destroy my capital and capture my settler
Restart your game then. Find a spot till you have some space. If you are close to barbarians, queue up this setup: Slinger, Warrior, Warrior, Builder and Slinger. Go into the archery tree once animal husbandry is completed. From there, if your archery doesn’t come in yet, kill a scout and get your archers (upgrade your slingers). Once you have at least two archers and three warriors, leave one Warrior behind and attack the nearest settlement of barbarians with your other groups. Once you have made your set up, your best bet would be to do bronze working and then iron working. I have found that horse back riding is meh. It’s not bad or great, it’s meh. If you want to move faster, then do horsemen and then bronze working. But the only reason I say be careful with horsemen is because most barbarians have spearmen and they reek havoc on your horsemen. Also, this setup starts you out pretty well to take care of city-states, too. But you probably need to have archers before you attempt to attack a city-state. You can get away with slingers on barbarian camps, but not city-states or capitals. If the barbarians are coming to you very early in the game (within the first 10 turns), do not go explore with your warrior. Or at least, not very far. Note: this setup is specifically for early conquest and for a domination pathway. (Don’t forget to put your +5 combat strength card in your military slot for your policies.).
