    "Gaul is a culture Civ"
    earlier Production, combat bonuses, gets Culture from building combat units
    now that I think about it, Gaul gets the culture version of the Basilikoi Paides in every city for free

    • @ChessJew
      @ChessJew 3 года назад +35

      To my eyes, the culture boosts are fantastic early game bonuses. Their trajectory seems like: rush to Oligarchy, earn some living space with your boosted warriors, then settle down to simcity to diplo or science. Though they're a bit diplo nerfed since you can't place the Diplo quarter next to a city and it loses some value.

    • @MrTrellheim
      @MrTrellheim 3 года назад +15

      They're an early domination civ, really. The boosts for culture help you get the combat cards you need earlier and the gaeseate has a bonus attacking districts. Not sure what the long-term strategy for Gaul should be, though.

    • @ChessJew
      @ChessJew 3 года назад +5

      @@MrTrellheim Yeah, ideally you're improving as many mines as possible to rush to Oligarchy. After your early power spike is over, they seem destined for a Diplo or Science win. Religion doesn't work, and their mines and IZs probably steer them away from culture victories.
      I do wonder how much of an edge the Oppidum is - an Aqueduct/Dam/IZ triangle is an easy way to get great adjacency, and that's not open to them

    • @GangsterJawa
      @GangsterJawa 3 года назад +1

      @@ChessJew I'm pretty sure they can do industrial triangles just fine; it's only specialty districts that don't get adjacency bonus. I think, anyway

      you made a mistake. You get Culture from building non-combat units like builders, settlers, support units(not sure about this one). He should have spam builders at beginning to build mines, get the culture. and get the Culture bombs. Maybe first builder then scouts.

  • @jessewood3196

    I envy the way Potato just calmly acknowledges lessons learned & doesn't panic at small mistakes & just keeps making the next best move he can. I get too OCD about having each turn be just right, and it really slows me down so games take too long. A video about that would be sooo helpful!

    The Gauls unique unit is not rendered obsolete by Swordmen. They aren't obsolete until gunpowder. They are quite capable of tanking hits from a Swordman if they heal each turn.
    Edit: Statue of Zeus also gives you 3 gold each turn. Which is not much on its own, but adds up over time.

    • @LAZERAK47V2
      @LAZERAK47V2 3 года назад +3

      Feels more like a Defensive Wonder, as it makes it cheaper to produce Anti-Cav units as well (basically the melee counterpart to the Temple of Artemis). Anti-Cav units are rarely used on offense against the AI (might be different against humans, never tried it).

    • @Krishnath.Dragon
      @Krishnath.Dragon 3 года назад +8

      @@LAZERAK47V2 Tried it once, it's a pretty decent wonder, both on Offense and Defense. I wouldn't discount the three archers it gets. It is usually enough to trigger the inspiration for Mercenaries and boost Machinery on its own. And it boosts your military score as well, making the AI less likely to attack. And that is beyond the +3 gold each turn, and the Era score from building a wonder.

    • @maulkin4387
      @maulkin4387 3 года назад +1

      Respectfully disagree. First off, your low base strength means you'll get obliterated by ranged units even in your own territory, unless behind fortifications. Being able to tank a swordsman in friendly territory is very small use, again it only helps if you want to turtle. And if you want to turtle it's best doing that after Renaissance if you've already set your self up for victory. Not during the ancient/classical eras where this unit is useful. That's the time you should look to expand and eliminate the most dangerous civs. Trying to turtle early on while (for example) Korea races to an unassailable science lead, is a recipe for disaster.

    I was really disappointed in my Gaul playthrough to find that mines do not provide tourism after flight. This was the main reason I played them to get a culture victory, and by the time I found out I was in too deep. Thankfully Voidsingers provide you with all the faith you will ever need to get naturalists and rock bands, plus the extra production meant I was swimming in wonders. Never mind bonuses from having a monopoly on great engineers for a lot of the game. Managed a bittersweet win in the end tho. Doubt tourism from their mines will be implemented, I'd like for there to be an update to the wording of the tourism from flight unlock to prevent this kind of false hope happening again.

    You had the right idea, a 3 city swordsman push followed by mass expansion is very very strong for this Civ if you have a close neighbor.

    I'm sure most are aware that mines only culture bomb unowned tiles. But a better way of phrasing that is "unowned *workable* tiles". That is, the culture bombs won't extend your borders further than 3 tiles from a city center. Just an FYI. I just finished a culture victory with them, pretty fun civ.

    • @Trinity0809
      @Trinity0809 3 года назад +1

      afaik culture bombs in civ6 never went above the 3 tile range. and it does grab mountains which are not workable

    • @richskater
      @richskater 3 года назад

      @@Trinity0809 You could be right, I don't think I've ever used a culture bomb in civ6 tbh. Used them to get far away strategics in civ5 plenty though. And you're right about mountains, "workable" isn't the right word either.

    I just had my first game with celts, got a Hero early on, and snowballed THREE civs in ancient era... I want for the last two, and decided tro let them live... absolutely insane hero powers! I could have won a Domination victory in ancient age. Then won a Cultural victory in Industrial. I didn't even got the time to build any corporations. Maya and Colombia didn't declare war on me even once. Vietnam, Babylon and Byzantium posed absolutely no defence. What a pity.

    Potato, I’ve watched almost every let’s play you have in your channel. It has been quite the ride, with your videos being the companion to my breakfast for weeks now.
    That is why I feel compelled to tell you that your improvement has been so damn notorious. Yesterday I finished the gameplay with the Ottomans and I gotta say that you’re rocking it. The way the game is played, the way the video is organized and even the way you speak. You emit much more confidence and dynamism today, which reflects in a content that is way more enjoyable to watch.
    Keep it up, man!

    Potato, if you didn't know - Preslav's suzerain bonus counts encampments buildings empire wide and applies to all cities. With enough encampment buildings, all of your cities will have full loyalty no matter what. Even newly founded and conquered. It's probably one of the best militaritistic city states for domination games imo. Besides Kabul that is, because Kabul is hands down the best.
