I think the first impression bonus is also dependent on difficulty. On deity I've only ever gotten a good first impression 3 or 4 times. Otherwise, it doesn't matter if I find them with a scout or combat unit, they almost always get a -3 bad first impression.

You missed one point about the scouts which I learned from one of your (!) earlier videos: Scouts can be very rewarding when you meet city states first. Two scouts are often very good because when you meet for example a cultural city state it's like an extra monument you get as a gift (+2 culture). If you meet only one city state first it's just fine, but often you meet two or three first and this is the point when I realized that scouts are extremely useful. Just think of the science or production bonusses you can get from them!
My favorite reason for playing on marathon; 17 turns for that first scout but in a 2000 turn game, you can find 6+ city states before anyone else of playing on Large or Huge maps.
Ik you tend to repeat yourself a lot by explaining your early game in every video. But this kind of video is still sooooo helpful and I learn something new every time you come back to this topic
This is great. I learn the MOST when you're actively commentating your thought process and everything you consider when making decisions. Really does help learn the game.
Is it at all possible for you to do over explained Civ. traits videos on each Civilization/leader? I really liked how you broke down the traits of Arabia and stated what victory types that their Traits are geared towards. Love the Video!!!!
I think the civilopedia can help you, if you select the entry of a leader, it will give you a basic rundown of start location and victory type. I think.
Yoo... I'm only 7:46 in and I've already learned more than I have from watching countless other beginner guides combined. Have a like and sub, well deserved.
When i know I'm on a peninsula, I usually send the warrior towards it. Since the scout is faster than the warrior, I try to send the warrior towards the smaller part of the map. That way, it tends to stay closer to my capitol to defend against barbarians. The scout can cover more ground, so it's better suited to exploring the larger part of the map.
I appreciate this series because I’ve only played like 20 hours so this is really helping me learn the game. I’m not fully new to Civ games, I know the mechanics more or less, but for reference on how long it’s been, my last Civ game I played a lot of was Civ Revolution. So while I have the idea down I felt like I was playing with 200 years of rust build up.
One thing I've noticed is that exchanging information with a civ when you first meet them increases their First Impression score. I tested this by reloading and trying both options. I don't remember the exact value of the difference (I did the test over a year ago), but it was enough that I tend to just be nice to every civ I meet IF I can afford a delegation with them the next turn. That seems to be a reliable way to keep the AI from attacking in the very early game.
I'm confused by the text. Does it carry over or not? You say in the text that you were wrong and this section was incorrect, you can save 1 turn. You start the section by saying you can, but conclude by saying you can't. Which part was wrong. Your hypothesis or your conclusion?

This episode has earned my sub and attention. I have had Civ VI for years on Steam but never played it... Now I'm deployed with the military, with my gaming laptop, and have chosen to take a look at games that take more time to learn. Thank you.
I find these videos a lot more helpful at improving as a player. I still enjoy the let's plays but I like the longer videos where you explain things in more depth
And this illustrates why you are such a good gaming 'educator'; clear unambiguous language very very rarely interrupted by 'uh.. er... um'... A joy to listen to. Best wishes.
Very nice guide, most information isn‘t new for experienced players, but there are always little concepts even veteran players don‘t really know or think about... so even for me as a hardcore civ fan it‘s pretty useful! Great thanks potato!
Just wanna say I recently got onto the game and after watch you I’ve exponentially gotten better. I was able to shave off 100 turns and get some solid victories.(playing on prince because I’m still new.)
Excatly the type of videos that I needed to grasp the basics of CIV 6. Also watched the aztec series. You changed a life of a noob today :) Great work. Kudos to you.🤜🤛
Just wanted to circle back and say thank you for this series. It really helped me a lot; I won my first deity game (2nd deity ever, after an aborted random match that went awry early) after watching just the first 2-3 episodes. Even subtle things like choosing to be a harbor empire or a commercial hub empire. Keep up the great content - and thanks, again!
One useful tip with early game scouting, I like to check the settler lens (4) periodically, because sometimes I will see some red tiles which will point me in the direction of a city-state's 3-tile border area (or also the loyalty markers for another civ's city). Easy way to know which way to scout.
I've been playing civ for 25 years now, but i actually learnt a lot from this. Thank you. Your accent is kind of weird but i love your content and your analytic play style. You're so pro.
I’m playing as Saladin rn and while the production ain’t as good as I like the faith is insane. I was able to spam Lahore units and just roll over Colombia and Zulu. Not sure how good that strat is on higher difficulties but usually dom is hard early game for me and this was stupid easy
automatically been guaranteed a great prophet/a religion is pretty huge on higher difficulties, since it can be very dicey trying to get a religion and even GOING for a religion is risky since you have to forgo other early infrastructure (including/especially Campuses) to do so. So as Potato says, the awesome part about Saladin is you don't have to choose, you can have the religion without losing the science (or visa versa).
You have such great enunciation and a really crisp speaking voice! I sometimes nudge the playback speed to 1.25x just so I can get through your content faster and both those qualities I mentioned earlier makes it so that I don't miss anything of what you said!
DIY Miracle I just learned this and it saves so much time! And saves me mistakes, because honestly - having to go to the Civilpedia usually means I convince myself I “actually remember it perfectly” and so DON’T look it up; which is stupid and never correct, lol.
It is like trying to learn to add from a collage Calculus professor. There is so much information here I might have to watch it 3 times. This is awesome but, wow the stuff that is going on in your head. Thank you for the video.
I had worked a good bit of this out myself, I've played several hundred hours. This is the first strategy video I've watched. The way you used your scouts in the early game was very informative for me. Loved the content. OH! the hotkeys, thanks so much! I didn't know about those.
I'm in the same place. I think I've just accepted that I'm going to lose a lot, which is fine. I enjoy trying and learning. I'm never going to master it though.
Barbarian Scouts (and other Barbarian units) do not go rogue. They start attacking the civilization or the city-state that cleared the Barbarian Outpost those Barbarian units were connected to
I'm late to the party, just started playing civ6 a week ago, I've been playing civ games since the original (i'm old). Super helpful guide for sorting out all the new mechanics, which are great. Just wanted to say THANKS POTATO!
What if you're losing in the long run if you don't go for the developmental option instead of military? Sometimes you may have to take risks. Just speaking in general, not saying Potato didn't make the optimal decision there.
watching 2 of your vids an me realising how bad i actually was (i just played 2-3 games tho until now) instantly getting better with just the knowledge and turn up the difficulty to the 2nd hardest. thanks for overexplaining, i love things to think about ♥ and it actually made the game way better for me, so i can enjoy science and culture strategies too
This video gives so much value to my gameplay, I've been playing civ 6 for a year and almost everything in this video taught me something new that helped so much
When Rome says they like cities with a lot of land, is that in relation to how much land they control or does the threshold increase as the eras progress?
That’s a good question. I often think those AI agendas are pretty ridiculous. Especially Ghandi who‘s constantly complaining about not building nukes in the ancient aera. It would be nice if there was a clear explanation, what those agendas mean and how you are able to fullfill them... Or at least disable some late game agendas in the early game.
+Adam Desai, it's the same with all AI agendas, they don't have a specific number in mind for how much of something they want you to have, they just want you to have more than them. Like the Cultured or Technophile agendas.
Wow thank you so much this is the best guide for beginners i have ever seen. i have like 30 hours in the game and this was so helpful for me. Please do more like this
I’m not sure how many people share this opinion, but I prefer the longer, single game videos over the multi part let’s plays, similar to the recent maya video
I would love to have the instant tornado over a barb camp mod, what is the hot key for that ? lol. I actually cheered when that happened, finally, justice for those times when 3 barb camps all spawn at the same time and I face multiple horsemen, horse archers and swordsmen with only a warrior and slinger to sort them out. Great content as always, thankyou :) Avidly wait to purchase a " Im a spuddie" mug , or " left click should NOT mean move!" T shirt, keep up the good work !
thank you very much for an amazing video. Was looking for some quick tips and tricks on Arabia, had no clue will be ending up watching an 80 mins video. it was worth it. there is a lot that the game doesn't tell us. such a steep learning curve.
Thank you for this series, Potato. I've been struggling with the transition from Emperor to Deity. This will help. If I may make a suggestion: consider doing a short series about a CivFanatics Game of the Month, since they are widely played with the same map.
The AI first impressions of you is determined by how many turns it takes to meet you ( not taking into effect hidden agendas etc) , not by the unit they meet. It improves by 2 points every 10 turns from a preset -10 at turn 1. You met Rome on turn 10 = 10 -2 = -8 You met Pachakuchi on turn 40 = -2 / You also met Georgia on turn 40 = -2 ( plus -2 for not having walls ) giving the -4 from her
This is fantastic! I would really enjoy whole series of this type of commentary (my biggest drawback is that I can't handle shitty starts and in the same time I don't like restarting. I have never gotten a start that looks theoretically good. Maybe I am just unlucky.). Keep up the most amazing work, dude!
You could have also mentioned when you were first talking about policy cards and Discipline vs Survey If you're playing as Germany, because they don't HAVE to make that choice. Iin fact, they don't get a choice at all. They HAVE to take BOTH of them because their ability gives them a military policy card in all governments. But since this is an Arabia game, I forgive it ;) Also, Arabia's ability to get a religion is REALLY good. On paper. It's been my experience that if you don't get the first belief, you won't get the religious beliefs you want. Feed the World and Meeting Houses (it WAS Warrior Monks before one of the patches, but it's Feed the World now) On promotions. One thing I've discovered is that your units don't gain XP if they're ready for a promotion. It's not like D&D where any XP you gain after you gain a level, but before you take the level, rolls over to the next level. Any XP over what's needed for the level is lost. That's why I take a promotion immediately.
Great video... been playing this game for quite some time and been struggling ever since I started... watching this videos made me realize how much I don't now about this game!
All my Civ 6 "god start" games (for instance, I started next to plains/Torres, on a river, near the sea in my current game) end up being disappointing...always. This was never an issue in Civ 5, and I've been playing Civ since the first one in the 90s, and have 1300 hours in Civ 6, so I'm not totally clueless. These games just end up being no better than when I get a half tundra start. It is to a point that I don't even get excited when I see one. Has anyone else experienced this?
Really great video, I always was searching for some detailed explanations on plannig whilst progressing the game. I feel like a just blinked and the video ended. Cant wait on your next one! Greetings from Germany!

I'm just about to start my first game after playing the brief tutorial, and this was extremely informative. Thanks so much!
Very nice guide, most information isn‘t new for experienced players, but there are always little concepts even veteran players don‘t really know or think about... so even for me as a hardcore civ fan it‘s pretty useful! Great thanks potato!
I've actually learned a lot from this episode, hopefully next one comes out soon. Good job Potato!
Just wanna say I recently got onto the game and after watch you I’ve exponentially gotten better. I was able to shave off 100 turns and get some solid victories.(playing on prince because I’m still new.)
My first three months watching this channel got me from prince to deity and I already had 500+ hours in!
Others: Yes! I settled my city oh boy I can't wait to build my first district! Let's just wait for the other players.
PotatoMcWhisky:
Excatly the type of videos that I needed to grasp the basics of CIV 6. Also watched the aztec series. You changed a life of a noob today :) Great work. Kudos to you.🤜🤛
I was only able to finish a game on King before watching your videos. Now I've been able to easily win 2 games on Emperor. Here I come Immortal!
One thing I’m still trying to figure out is when to extract the resource and when to improve it.
Great video McJames. Keep up the great content. At this rate I have more time logged in your videos than actual game play time 🙃
This is a series I didn’t even know I wanted but now I do
One useful tip with early game scouting, I like to check the settler lens (4) periodically, because sometimes I will see some red tiles which will point me in the direction of a city-state's 3-tile border area (or also the loyalty markers for another civ's city). Easy way to know which way to scout.
32:56 I love your save file names lol "I was wrong about pillaging 01-06" "Proving a Point" etc. I need to start naming my saves like that!
I've been playing civ for 25 years now, but i actually learnt a lot from this. Thank you. Your accent is kind of weird but i love your content and your analytic play style. You're so pro.
It's not that weird... You've never heard an Irish accent before?
I’m playing as Saladin rn and while the production ain’t as good as I like the faith is insane. I was able to spam Lahore units and just roll over Colombia and Zulu. Not sure how good that strat is on higher difficulties but usually dom is hard early game for me and this was stupid easy
Also try to get suzerainship of Valetta. Insta-walling and watermilling new cities can be quite helpful.
automatically been guaranteed a great prophet/a religion is pretty huge on higher difficulties, since it can be very dicey trying to get a religion and even GOING for a religion is risky since you have to forgo other early infrastructure (including/especially Campuses) to do so. So as Potato says, the awesome part about Saladin is you don't have to choose, you can have the religion without losing the science (or visa versa).
@ lol cool story little guy
Christian Bai Weird, totally unprovoked flex, but okay. You do you bb.
Christian Bai you must be super fun at parties bro :)
You have such great enunciation and a really crisp speaking voice! I sometimes nudge the playback speed to 1.25x just so I can get through your content faster and both those qualities I mentioned earlier makes it so that I don't miss anything of what you said!
You can see the adjacency bonuses for districts by hoving over their pin icon, makes it a hell of a lot quicker than opening up ths civopedia :)
30 minutes
wow
the pain
thank you sir may I have another?
I had worked a good bit of this out myself, I've played several hundred hours. This is the first strategy video I've watched. The way you used your scouts in the early game was very informative for me. Loved the content. OH! the hotkeys, thanks so much! I didn't know about those.
As a casual (I can only win on Prince) - Listening to the full thought process is nice. Thanks.
I'm in the same place. I think I've just accepted that I'm going to lose a lot, which is fine. I enjoy trying and learning. I'm never going to master it though.
Thanks for putting these together! I was struggling with prince before finding your channel and have worked my way up to Deity since. Great content!
"If you die, all of your investment goes down to zero"
In other words, if you die, you lose the game
What if you're losing in the long run if you don't go for the developmental option instead of military? Sometimes you may have to take risks.
Just speaking in general, not saying Potato didn't make the optimal decision there.
watching 2 of your vids an me realising how bad i actually was (i just played 2-3 games tho until now) instantly getting better with just the knowledge and turn up the difficulty to the 2nd hardest. thanks for overexplaining, i love things to think about ♥ and it actually made the game way better for me, so i can enjoy science and culture strategies too
Every time I see Saladin I forget he has that little cone with the point on the top of his hat.
This video gives so much value to my gameplay, I've been playing civ 6 for a year and almost everything in this video taught me something new that helped so much
Love the video. Hope you can make a video sometime showing how you tactically try to defend against an early invasion with limited defensive units.
This was a great series man. The first few episodes were so insightful. Thanks for taking the time and I hope you do it again with another Civ
When girls say "You couldn't handle thisss" so you go as long as possible to prove a point
Just started this playlist and already learning a lot. Thank you for all the effort you put into this.
It's compared to how much land they own. They like empires bigger than them
+Adam Desai, it's the same with all AI agendas, they don't have a specific number in mind for how much of something they want you to have, they just want you to have more than them. Like the Cultured or Technophile agendas.
@@maxjahns9063 the dutch too, they always builf lots of militairy and a trader isnt your top priority usually.
Wow thank you so much this is the best guide for beginners i have ever seen. i have like 30 hours in the game and this was so helpful for me. Please do more like this
This game is getting played to its conclusion, right?
yes
@@PotatoMcWhiskey after this game you Will be very tired
This is how a guide should always be. No click rush - pure intelligent information. Thank you very much.
I’m not sure how many people share this opinion, but I prefer the longer, single game videos over the multi part let’s plays, similar to the recent maya video
Thats why I do a mixture of different videos! :)
I love them too
I just really wanted to thank you for a video that helped me so much and required so much patience on your part! Loved it!
Great content as always, thankyou :)
Avidly wait to purchase a " Im a spuddie" mug , or " left click should NOT mean move!" T shirt, keep up the good work !
thank you very much for an amazing video. Was looking for some quick tips and tricks on Arabia, had no clue will be ending up watching an 80 mins video. it was worth it. there is a lot that the game doesn't tell us. such a steep learning curve.
Excruciating detail? Count me in!
Thank you for this series, Potato. I've been struggling with the transition from Emperor to Deity. This will help.
If I may make a suggestion: consider doing a short series about a CivFanatics Game of the Month, since they are widely played with the same map.
Only the true fans will know the original title to this video before he changed it.
Or those that still have it in their notifications
This series will be very helpful for new players picking up the game now. Keep up the good work.
The AI first impressions of you is determined by how many turns it takes to meet you ( not taking into effect hidden agendas etc) , not by the unit they meet. It improves by 2 points every 10 turns from a preset -10 at turn 1.
You met Rome on turn 10 = 10 -2 = -8
You met Pachakuchi on turn 40 = -2 / You also met Georgia on turn 40 = -2 ( plus -2 for not having walls ) giving the -4 from her
This is fantastic!
But since this is an Arabia game, I forgive it ;)
Also, Arabia's ability to get a religion is REALLY good. On paper. It's been my experience that if you don't get the first belief, you won't get the religious beliefs you want. Feed the World and Meeting Houses (it WAS Warrior Monks before one of the patches, but it's Feed the World now)
On promotions. One thing I've discovered is that your units don't gain XP if they're ready for a promotion. It's not like D&D where any XP you gain after you gain a level, but before you take the level, rolls over to the next level. Any XP over what's needed for the level is lost. That's why I take a promotion immediately.
When you have a military unit in combat, you might want to wait until the promotion also heals the unit
Instructions unclear Montezuma is screaming at me at 15 eagle warriors are surrounding my capital.
Call Ghandhi to send nukes
Montezuma can't surround you with Eagle Warriors if you are Montezuma.
Well, I guess technically he can but it wouldn't be a bad thing.
Very well explained, Really glad someone out there is sharing this. Your videos have completely changes how I approach this game, Keep it up man.
Me: *puts on 5 speed*
Potato: *starts speaking faster*
Chinese player here. I am so surprised that the Civ 6 is an actually complex game! These series of videos are really cool materials for advanced players! Thanks, PotatoMcWhiskey!
