Even though I have 2k hours on this game, I still like these kinds of overexplainations. It goes to show how much goes through your head without always realising.
I agree. I just crossed that 2k threshold. The most recent couple hundred were Potato powered forays into diety.
I have even 10K and still like these videos. Thanks PotatoMcWhiskey.
@@thr4017 You're a master at Civ 6! Congrats!!!
I've been playing for uncountable hours. I currently play at deity.
But I still like these overexplained videos.
I have 2k hours in the game but I still *need* these videos lol
I don't know if you are the best Civ VI player in the world, Bro, (I am not qualified to judge that) but you are definitely the best TEACHER of Civ VI in the world. Thank you.
I second that statement.
Agreed!
Potato if you read this, please dump all your tutorials into 1 playlist!!
Just gotta say, I found your channel through your Arabia overexplained, and man was it the start of a Civ 6 revelation. Went from bumbling around in prince to constantly flexing on Diety AI (when they don’t frame 1 bum rush me lol)! Hope this new one helps any future newcomers as I know it’ll still be entertaining to watch for a 1000+ hr vet like me.
Same!
Same for me aswell. without it probably would not have enjoyed civ6 as much as I do.
One of his tips that really helped me was that if you want to get a religion early you can ignore the shrine and just pray (holy site prayers project) because you get more total prophet points for the same time investment.
And then all of his videos in general help with learning new (to me) mechanics/strategies/tips. Things like settle on that luxury and pin everything (not just city center locations), also his 3 cities cooperating on 3 industrial districts with 3 aquaducts is just such an obvious but galaxy brain move.
@@jasonreed7522 yes to all of that. Would definitely never understand some of the useful applications for projects if it wasn’t for potato’s thought processes.
Agreed. I was in the same boat and now I’m doing the A to Z challenge on deity and am all the way to Suleiman. Thanks Mr.Potato! Now can you do a mechwarrior explained series so I quit getting pwned lol?
The fact that you come back and make these types of videos still is fantastic. Great for new viewers, a bit of refresher for the long time viewers, and shows just how knowledgeable you are. Bringing up why you do things and recommendations to allow us to tailor in our own games is great teaching! Thanks!
Everyone watching should definitely like this video. We aren't getting content like this very often anymore and he's quite a good teacher.
Hearing potato speak slowly is like I’ve gone into a different dimension
Love the video, unless its annoying to have a large UI, I loved the larger one cause I am primarily a mobile viewer.
Around 9:52 it is worth considering the faster growth will make you able to work more tiles faster. So while the monument may seem like it will take 3 more turns, but actually if you do the math, the monument will be made faster on the 3 food 1 production tile. Why? Because you get the second population 3 turns faster (on the 3 food 1 production tile), which means you will have 3 more turns with 2 more production. That, compared to having 5 turns with 1 less production, meaning youll end up with a total of one production less, by not working the 3 food 1 production.
I think your theory works, but it's really difficult to follow what you mean in this specific instance.
Which 3 food / 1 production tile should have been worked in place of what other tile that actually ended up being worked?
I dont know if this might help anyone but when Whiskey talks about hills having production during approx 5:15 , you guys might check out the mod Hillier hills that just makes hills a tiny bit more recognisible and the landscape looks more diverse.
Great to see this series again, looking forward to it
Won my first ever deity games recently, and I've been playing since literally Civ 1. Thanks for all the tips PMW!
Well done!
Potato: "Remember, it's alright to go back to a previous save and do it again if you did something wrong; you are learning the game!"
Me with 1000h in the game after doing the same quintessential mistakes I always do: "That's right, this is a *learning* experience!"
As someone who is fairly new to Civ, this series is very helpful. It's such a thorough, well explained guide. Thank you.
Personally I liked the old scaling factor better. It made stuff a whole lot easier to read on both my mobile and my TV, and being able to read the cards/civopedia/etc along with the video was helpful.
I love the overexplained videos. I enjoy playing civ, but before I ran into your channel, I was... not good, and didn't understand why. I learned a lot from watching the last one, and I look forward to this to see what other tidbits I will pick up from this one!
fun tip: using the settler lens you can spot cities before you see their border as it'll show up red on otherwise settlable terrain
Love your videos, but personally I like the zoomed in UI better- I watch mainly on mobile and on TV and it’s a lot easier to follow.
Been playing VI since launch and only just now learned that each continent has four unique luxury resources. This is why I watch Mr. McWhiskey!
Ive watched the first ~20 minutes of this video about 7 times and i still feel like im learning new stuff. Love this, hope you make more once im done watching this series in what will probably take me ~2 years
just finished watching the FFA CCC8 cast and now I'm watching Potato play Aztec, getting luxuries, talking about and getting a classical era golden age, hinting at what's good in multiplayer... I can tell he liked that FFA game :)
I felt myself started university again. CIV101 is the best class of this curriculum Mr Prof Potato
Watch a lot of your videos on mobile, so I prefer the 200% UI scale. Too hard to see it now. But will survive if others want it lower ofc :)
I agree, I like 200% ui scales better as well.
With all your experience and skill allowing you to play at the highest level, I appreciate that you still take the time to explain the game at beginner level. I'm not a beginner with CIV myself - I'm trying my hand at the highest level by now - nevertheless I always find these tutorials helpful, not only because of the many tips, but also to follow the whole train of thought of yours ... and I like your kind of humor. 👍
I absorb, I grow
(seriously though congrats on 300k my friend!)
I primarily watch on mobile or my tv so I appreciated the zoomed in view.
oooh my god i really thought i knew just about everything about this game, but i can’t believe i didn’t realize that putting a city under siege just requires enough units to exercise zone of control on every tile around it. i’ve been completely surrounding the city with units, now i know i can do it with far less. this is actually a game changer for me, thank you.
I love early war and how different it is depending on difficulty . By this I mean the risk and reward of the whole situation like I am playing a game currently with nubia on immortal and I had a lot of camps combined with a lot of city states which allowed me to spam out Nubian archers and take 2 of the Congo cities . Now this took alot of investment but because I was playing on a higher difficulty this meant that while it was harder to capture the Ai also had much higher development in there cities and I got a temple of arteries and 2 districts free . Now if I was on a lower difficulty It might of actually not been worth it to go to war as the ai sucks with placing cities and without the extra things they built it may just of been better to settle . The point of this point is civ 6 difficulty is interesting as in theory if you have a game where you spawn on a continent by yourself and your diplomatic it may be easier to develop as you will have stronger allies .
I absolutely love seeing an update for the Overexplained series! Great for newbies of course, but also great for us vets as a refresher on the fundamentals of the game.

2 things thing I ALWAYS look for when I settle a new city (ESPECIALLY my capital) is first and foremost, settling on a river. I LOVE the water mill. So much that a non-river city has to be amazing or I'm grabbing it for some completely different reason, say to grab Zangy Dangy. The second thing I look for is floodplains for industrial zone complexes.
What do floodplains do for industrial zones?
@@JosephLachh Dams and Aqueducts both give major adjacency bonuses to Industrial Zones. Aqueducts can be built on a variety of places (including floodplains), but dams can only be built on floodplains.
Another overexplained series! Some kind of Easter miracle perhaps?
I am soooo happy to see updated Overexplained series. I really appreciated the 1st one a few years back, it helped me out a lot getting into Civ, and I recommend it all the time to friends who are interested in learning the game.
14:45 I have played quite a bit of this game and NEVER noticed the difference in the background color of the different types of resources! That's why I am here, because I KNOW that there will be SOMETHING that I didn't know before!
I’ve played hundreds of hours of this game and I still consider myself a beginner and learn things from these videos. I don’t know if that’s a testament to me or the game itself
Watch the videos always on mobile, and appreciated the zoomed in. Being experienced, I dont need it so much. A new player would definitely need it though.
1200 hours playing this game, mostly on deity, still love watching these kinds of videos
hey potato, thanks for doing an updated overexplained in 2022. I don't really play civ6 now, but I really like someone who's talking about this game's every why and how nonstop lol.
Stumbled across this by chance while looking for something to scratch the learning itch.
Appreciate your explanations and teaching. I come back to this game every year and always learn more and more each time.
Just thought I'd chime in on the UI topic ...
As a 100% mobile device viewer, I can say with confidence that I preferred the larger mode.
Though on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 = can't live without it) I'd say it's only about a 4 importance.
Much lower than other recent topics like face-cam for instance
I tend to have RUclips playing on my mobile. Most videos I just listened to. I have thousands of hours of playing the different Civilization games and I agree appreciate videos like this. I have no problem learning something new about the various games
On the UI question, I watch your videos on my cell phone, and have always appreciated the zoomed in view. I don't know if others have a preference, but for me at least it's appreciated
I extremely enjoy these over explained series!
This has to be one of the best Civ tutorials I’ve ever watched. This video is your key to understanding how to be OP. I will be founding pantheons to Potato from now on!
YES! Finally an update to these series. Been waiting a long time for this, please keep them coming.
28:15 IMO it would have made more sense to settle your 2nd city next to the left on the lake because it would have gave you more workable tiles to work (the 2 ivory tiles) and ESPECIALLY when a city is just starting out, you need workable tiles to get your city going.
Congrats on your r/Places! I was stoked when I found it
It is beautiful watching you talk out all of these moves and the detail you take into future moves...
I very much appreciate these kinds of videos. I've been playing Civ6 since it came out and always kind of lose interest around the mid-game. Having a better idea of what to be keeping my eyes out for helps me a lot.
nice!! So cool, that you're doing another one of these !!!
I'm trying to get into civ, but having only the basic game, not all the expansions, so much changed.
Watching a video and playing myself is so different.
No loyalty, adjacency different half the leaders missing, no pingala and folks, etc.
Also for some reason, none of my maps roll more than 2 adjacent mountains, even on new world age.
Unfortunately video games lately (not all) require all these DLC's so you can have full fun and potential that the game has. Civilization 6, Warhammer Total War, Anno 1800, Jurassic World Evolution... the list goes on. What I will say is that I think grabbing 'Gathering Storm' when its on sale is worth it.
one 9f the expAnsions improved map gen
Yeah, I think the problem with these vids, I'm guessing most new players don't get the full game
@@domagoj905 I do think all the dlc is worth it, that doesn't change me amount of dispensable income sadly. :D can't afford it rn, need to save money for our wedding, so it's OK. :D
Also anno 1800 is on my wishlist too, but with dlcs it's 100 Bucks, so also postponed until after the ceremony.
I’ve been playing for quite a while now and I only just learned the icon borders for luxuries, bonus resources, and strategies were color coded!
Many hours of play have passed since I saw your first video, until I managed to win a game in deity. Thanks for the videos, they are so much fun to watch.
It’s cool that you’re doing some basics again dude. Civ can be a daunting game for someone just starting out. I’m even learning some tips that I totally forgot about lol. Cheers
I wanna say thank you for adding this great tutorial. I love Civ 6. I have about 300 hours played. However I skip basic fundamentals for gameplay because I never bothered to learn. This makes it easy though.
Civ is so addictive, whether you are watching it or playing it. I have no idea why i just watched this whole video, but, i enjoyed it, thoroughly
So useful information i was like so lost when starting this game never realized there’s so much mechanics to the game.
this is wonderful as I was just watching the Arabia overexplained this week as a fairly new Civ player
thanks!
Love this. Started playing a few months ago, got hooked. Love your other videos and the tournament you did, but back to the basics now that I know more about the game is fantastic.
Ah its this time of the year again :D You know its my 3rd year playing civ6 and yet I always find some useful tip or mechanic that I have forgotten or did not now about. Thank you sensei Potato for enlightening me and others over the whole life cycle of civ6.
As a mobile user I find the UI scaling fine either way. What’s more important is the commentary, especially during an overexplained
YES. Please, do more of these! Basic civ, over-explained.
That was all very well explained and expanded my scope of considerations when starting a new game. Thanks!
Aztec empire is one of my favs even with all the new civs. Great video spud daddy.
I have used Reyna as my first governor a couple of times, usually because I want to rush her second promotion to get +2 gold on undeveloped features. As you said it's situational however if you're playing someone like the Maori and have a bunch of woods/rainforest that you're going to leave undeveloped for the bonus production then +2 from each of them is nice.
Edit: Also just remembered, I used her recently as Canada on a game where I had 8 marshes in my empire and got etemenanki. Not as good as large swathes of rainforests but still nice to boost those even further. So yeah, situational but can be useful if you want to boost early game money and can dedicate your first 2 titles to her.
I haven't tried it, but if I was doing a Commercial Zone-Harbor-City Center triangle on my first or second city (with the Commercial Zone on a river, and the Harbor next to some sea resource), it seems like her other second promotion could also be quite nice.
It takes a while to get a preserve up and running, but I love putting her in a city with a preserve or national park later in the game. But if I don't have that, then I'll usually put her in a coastal city late game where I've done the Commercial Zone-Harbor-City Center triangle, and then start moving her around once I unlock the ability to buy districts with money.
I almost always do Liang or Pingala for my first governor, and I only do Magnus if I see a lot of woods to be chopped and/or tiles with bonus resources that I want to use for districts. I usually try to keep woods around early game if they're next to tiles that I might want to use for National Parks or Seaside Resorts later in the game, so that's a big reason why I don't tend to use Magnus. And it's a reason why Reyna could actually be a decent choice for my play style.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING A NEW SERIES! These are so informative and I am looking forward to seeing all of them.
As someone who just bought this (my first Civ game) and is watching this video while downloading, thank you.
These overexplained videos are what initially drew me to this channel. I started off wanting to learn more so I could play with my husband. (I'm the stereotypical female who never played video games) Now he won't play because I'm too good and can win almost every civ on deity 😅
Hey potato, love your content. I’m an avid mobile watcher and the old UI scaling was defiantly a lot easier for me. Keep up the awesome vids thanks
I really like going for Animal Husbandry first even if I don't have much flat land because it's one of the few techs that gives you something for free just by researching it (revealing horses). Other techs like Mining unlock improvements that you'll need a builder for, while techs like Pottery unlock buildings you'll need to spend production on.
I have been sitting here for the last 30 minutes restarting my game trying the get the perfect Canada start.
26:25 remember: civ 6 is just like real life, which means your actions don’t have consequences
Love the over-explained. I think it's your best content. Though I think you've got an overexplained for complete beginners so maybe leave out the very basics. Anything about how to actually play rather than funny/crazy scenarios. Thanks for content!
My description of 'inland sea' from now on is, by the way, "Barbs. Barbs EVERYWHERE!! AAAAAAAAAAAH!! Why has god abandoned us?!"
Also, thank you very much Potato! Thanks to many of your videos, I finally managed to get a culture victory on immortal on said inland sea map!
Yesssss!!! A new overexplained! I've waited too long for this!!!
That was a close call between the near mythical religious settlements and camps. I like this combo with temple of Artemis of course but it’s really tough to pass up that settler. Feels close but three camps is unusually strong
Wow! I've seen the Arabia one a couple of times! Super helpful!
I started using Pingala on DT last time I played, he's better for catching up with AI in early game and that +1 culture per pop helps getting some early civics faster (like empires civic to get better government). I still do use Magnus from time to time, usually when I see good land spots, to grab it before AI, or when I play some civ that benefits from having lot of land and cities, like for example Rome or Aztecs.
I am SO thankful for this! I consider myself pretty good at science/culture/religious victories, but for the life of me I cannot do domination victories worth a damn. Eagerly awaiting this overexplained and hoping lots of informative warmongering goes on!
Nice! Wish potato would do a more overexplained Humankind tutorial than he has so far
I won several games on deity by just using this one trick I learned from potato..
Go wide! Have more cities than your opponents and you'll catchup to leave them in the dust.
Tthank you for this incredible guide and explanation! I wish I had you on speed dial when I play. I am completely new to Civ 6, and I really want to learn this game. 5/5 video!
Promise I just took a break from playing with the Aztec thinking Damn hate using them. Maybe you’ll change my mind lol.
As someone specifically on mobile, it's fine man. As long as your phone can handle 1080p everything is readable. Play whichever U.I you prefer!
I'm glad you were able to demonstrate the curse of Korea showing up in every single dang game
Timestamps for my own use:
2:16 Sweden start
4:44 re-roll as Rome
6:57 re-roll as Indonesia
10:00 re-roll as Aztecs
If you meet another civ on turn 2 or 3 playing on deity you may as well go all in on warriors if your production is high or just re-roll lol
They'll find your capitol in a handful of turns whether you share the knowledge or not
Glad to see this series! Even with over 600 hours I am stil learning new things from your videos, espically about civs I dont normally play! Looking forward to this and maybe some more A to Z?
Love the mod list!! Thank you for putting that together
To parapghrase the 1st Jedi we were introduced to: THIS, is the video I have been looking for!
Excited to see another Overexplained series! They really helped me elevate my game. Any chance of a vanilla, no expansion / DLC series? I'm on console and haven't upgraded.
I made a mod a while ago that subtracted 1 food from every tile in the game (tundras became yieldless) and added a bunch of other features to try to force play style to more correctly mirror history. Grassland became only 1 food, plains became only 1 production... After irrigation, farms adjacent to rivers got +1 food, though. Irrigation also let you build farms on deserts adjacent to freshwater (like oases).
I also staggered nearly all luxury and bonus resources behind techs and civics. Only the resources that would've been reasonably useful to ancient peoples were visible at the start of the game. Things like basic produce such as citrus, wine, wheat, sheep, etc. were visible. Fish were invisible before sailing. Incense and Tobacco were invisible before Mysticism. Marble, Gypsum, etc. were revealed by mining, as was copper.
That's not really the point though, I'm commenting this because I'm wondering (without trying it out) what you think the changes to terrain would do to the game? In my experience, getting cities over 2 or 3 population early on was pretty brutal.
I guess the only other major change I made to the early game (apart from reworking virtually every eureka or inspiration) was moving the Campus to a new tech in the classical era (Philosophy) instead of writing, because writing in the ancient era was created for record keeping and inventorying documents, tax papers, etc. and was not used for scientific thought until later. Writing instead unlocked a building for the government plaza called the Archive which granted iirc like +2 science and +1 culture and then an additional +1 science and +1 culture for every era since it was built. Many ancient cities had archives like this. One of the most famous being the Library at Ninevah, because large portions of it were preserved. It wasn't a [public] library though, it was a government archive of important documents.
Anyway, I'm not asking you to play my mod (I accidentally deleted like 6 months of work I'd put into it and have mostly given up on it at this point) I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on the approach.
Excellent guide. Will take a few watches to absorb everything as it's fast and rammed full of useful info. 👍
Man, thank you.
This is amazing! Keep up the good work brother.
Be confident Potato, there was a lot of nervous stuttering with the UI scaling, I think it looks great!
Ngl, I watch on mobile and I do miss the zoomed in UI. Pls bring it back
Dude I just started getting back into civ and this video was perfectly timed
37:47 "Sometimes you have to be aggressive in order to get what you want."
Napoleon, Hitler and Stalin: nods in approval.
Ah perfect time to completely re learn my fundamentals in Civ 6 again in time to procrastinate studying for my finals for the next month
This game has so many layers and complications I’ll have to go see if they offer a college degree in it
I love your overexplained guides. Greetings from Mexico!
Great video MR P, would have loved this content when I was starting.....bit late now though as I am bout 1.5k into the game. However, my one suggestion would actually be to go into a little more detail as some things may not be so obvious for new players for example the getting horses - just a few more seconds explaining not all resources are visible on the map and that they can appear on specific tiles, now you hinted at that but didn't exactly explain why and as a new player I would love just this extra bit of info. Thanks for all your hard work!
