Can I Survive 100 Days in Hardcore Survival Mode? - Perfectly Balanced Skyrim Challenge

- Welcome back to skyrim! Where today we set out on an impossible challenge! Can you beat the survive 100 days in skyrim hardcore challenge? The rules are simple, Legendary difficulty skyrim with survival mode but the added twist that you are not allowed to equip any Armor or weapons. This is the hardest possible challenge skyrim can offer. You are effectively playing at 1 hp and almost anything will kill you and fail the run. Ontop of that in survival mode you must eat and sleep similarly to an indie survival game. You must also balance temperatures which in the cold northern lands of skyrim is rather impossible.
So sit back and watch as the spiffing brit tests to see if Skyrim is a perfectly balanced game with no exploits or surviving 100 days of skyrim hardcore is a task that is simply too impossible for this pro exploiter!
What you have seen here today is part of a fantastic perfectly balanced series on youtube where I go from game to game and break them with wacky exploits to gain things like unlimited gold and infinite money all in a fantastic montage. If you enjoyed this then be sure to check out more. The style is similar to RT game and callmekevin in parts. A large influence on this series has come from Valefisk and The Killian Experience.

Seeing him die to his own hubris in forgetting this simple lesson is something I found very funny. If only he'd taken the time to realize he wasn't capable of fighting the enemies and that he just should have ran away. Even had he won, it's likely he'd of just died to something the same way a little later without remembering this simple rule: 'If we don't die we can run away.'

Technically having a wood axe or pickaxe in your inventory without being equipped isn't using them as a weapon, and if you activate a wood pile or an ore vein, it will automatically use them as tools but you won't equip them as weapons or be using them as weapons ^_^

If you want a free place to sleep, do Faendal’s friend mission in Riverwood. You can take the key to his house out of his inventory and use his bed and cooking facilities as often as you like. All you have to do is deliver a letter to another Riverwood resident.
Also, if you find a piece of firewood (I know you said you won’t make any under these restrictions, but you can find it now and then) you can sell it to the innkeeper in Whiterun, and she’ll let you sleep in her bed in one of the rooms above the kitchen.
@@tammyboy2084?! i didn’t know this
Never in my life did i think i would hear someone say “im not equipped to fight a skeleton” in reference to an elder scrolls game.
This was engrossing. I agree with others that just watching you play the game normally trying to survive, getting attached to the character, being genuinely scared for his safety and sad at his loss...it really was amazingly wholesome and enjoyable. Would definitely like to see some more cracks at it.
This man has created a way to become the “protect this npc” quest but for 100 days… Bravo to you sir!!!

Spiff discovering how life works...
You can tell it's a fantasy game because the guy is the one who does nothing and gets the money
Yeah this definitely needs another go. Would love to see it with the rules tweaked too so it changes up how you play through these first two weeks as well.
Something like: you can use weapons, armor, and enchantments, but only what you personally craft. The living hell it'd be to try and brave dungeons to find loot you could use to break down and learn enchantments would be an interesting risk/reward decision.
You could change the rules to no magic or ranged fighting interactions. Like a Puritan warrior build. Honeslty, that would be much harder, while opening up the option of working your way up to better armor.
Even change to "pickaxes, axes, and fishing rods don't count as weapons for the purposes of this run" would have made all the difference.
Hearing Spiff hit like 2 octaves higher with that skeleton was so funny I had to listen again and again. Actively crying with laughter!

If you ever decide to attempt this again you can get Faendal in riverwood for free to do your bidding while you run away from a bandit screaming! That’s what’s I’d have done at least
that’s what i was thinking
The problem I’ve found with survival mode is that food is ridiculously cheap, like something that restores ~300 hunger is 1-5 gold, it’s amazing.
Atleast it's realistic, in most survival games you're like eating constantly.
While you do get hungery while surviving you usually aren't eating 20 steaks per day.
When you think about it, this is effectively what is like to be a regular townsfolk npc in this game. Really puts into perspective how heroic the dragonborn really is when you see what it would effectively be like to be a weak townsfolk npc. You're just a guy, you dont have or wear fancy armor. Maybe you have some magic abilities but it's not much. You eat sleep and get injured and can die. Then one day, someone shows up blasted out in legendary armor, a badass weapon and a badass sidekick, and they can literally just yell things into or out of existence with the power of the dragon's voice. At best you've got a little dagger and maybe some magic if you're lucky. If you ran out into the wilds you'd never survive alone against a bunch of bandits. And lets not forget, there is a civil war going on as well. You're a lowly peasant just trying to make some coin and survive 100 days. I love it.
Remember, the DragonBorn starts as a prisoner who is tied up with no armor or weapons and has to find some while running from a dragon that is attacking... unlike the weak townsfolk noc in your scenario the Dragonborn isn't content to be a weak person who relies on others and does what he has to in order to improve his lot in life.
@@Tinmann_77 Dragonborn. Sigma-born grind mentality. Gigaborn? Lol. (Ya ok pretty bad jokes but lmao anyways) But yeah gotta respect the effort to grow the dragonborn does. Tho to be fair, as the player it's natural we'd be able to learn new skills and kick ass. You do gotta point tho.
To be fair, a normal NPC could likely use a wood chopping axe, a pick axe, or just general farming equipment to earn their living. Not much of a living mind you, but a few coin here and there to survive. Those without lodging of their own could or would sometimes have lodging provided by their employment (farmhand, miner quarters as examples). This could simulate an NPC with some physical disabilities (say due to illness or injury) without any family or kin to look out for them.
Spiff: "No exploits"
Also Spiff: "We'll call this a gameplay mechanic"
Yes, has no mana, knows it's a bug letting him continue, I'd call that an exploit
@@Hwk1901 It's a feature, not a bug. If Bethesda left it in the game you can be rest assured it is a gameplay mechanic, given their track record of releasing perfectly balanced, exploit-free AAA games!

you can do that with console commands. i would need the entire video uncut to believe him.
I love how much this challenge makes challenging even so much as a single Skeleton a terrifying experience

By far one of the most entertaining videos and creative I`ve seen on youtube in a while! Can´t wait for more content like this *sips tea*
You basically beat the challenge as soon as you got married and made it back to Whiterun. At that point you can spend the other 100 days having Ysolda cook for you once a day and giving you money and a free bed. For round 2, I think you need to incorporate another goal, like amassing 1 million gold or defeating the Ebony Warrior or completing a major questline or something. Could be interesting to see you do this challenge with the added goal of building and fully furnishing a hearthfire house. The travel to and from would be a challenge by itself, and you'd have to balance keeping yourself alive with buying materials for the build. It would also make improving your stamina something you would need to do so you could carry more materials each trip.
Agreed. Spif maintaining the basic goal of survival was achieved via marriage. Without a goal to explore the world and achieve something within those 100 days there's nothing that will pit those difficulty mods into play. Even doing something like amass 10,000 gold via trading between towns would achieve more things. I'm curious if there's a traders guild mod that encourages building trade routes.
No. He cheated. Mara's amulet wasn't allowed in this challenge.
@@mosherubenstein8248 It's equipment but not "armor" or a "weapon" so it should be fine?
The ebony warrior is incredibly late game. It was basically meant to be the last thing you could possibly do. It would take him idk 1000’s of days to get to it without console commands
I agree with this take, since he's basically playing a peasant merchant I think they goal of home ownership is highly appropriate and would be a delight to watch.
I've never seen Spiff actually play the game normally for this long. It's not long mind you. If Spiff doesn't exploit Skyrim then Todd will do it for you.
You have seen him play the game normaly when he was stacking potion and enchantment effects. Thats how the game is meant to be played, boosting your intelligence by a few thousand to make better potions to boost it further to make even better potions and enchantments. They made it quite clear that they expect it to be played that way with the wizard falling from the sky after boosting jump by 1000.
Thing is, this _still_ isn't normal. He's intentionally making it harder than it needs to be for a challenge.
I know it's been a while since this project was started and last touched/abandoned, but you've introduced such a fun challenge mode for skyrim.
Thank you for this short lived series!
In the beginning of your journey you should of gotten Faendal from Riverwood as your companion. All you had to do to get him was his simple quest and you would have gotten a decent companion for free.
Also he gives you a bit of gold from his job at the lumber mill if I remember right. 2 birds with one stone, a companion to help out and some spending cash for room and board.
+ those skeletons and wolves are just destruction magic xp bags, so he just wasted some good lvls
The fact Spiff is struggling so badly because he can’t just use exploits to fix all his problems is amazing.
he struggles to not exploit todd howards masterpiece
He is so good a exploiter that he did it on accident to level up alteration
in Bethesda games he just uses the console. thats just a cheat, not an exploit. makes the titles a lie often.
Spif: I’m not leaving the path for any reason!
Also Spif: Oh look a farm!
I was shocked he didn't complete that quest tbh - it gives MORE money and has people make alchemy ingredients for you! Between that and Ysolda he would've been set

Legendary difficulty actually makes you take 4x more damage and makes you do 25% of the normal damage you would do on the games "normal" difficulty. Therefore this feat is even greater than could be imagined
What about armor stats do they change?
@@buckduck3624 nothing you just take enemies just deal 4x more damage and you deal less, its a very Bethesda way to increase difficulty just make everything more spongey and hit harder
Pretty sure it's x3 against you. 25% against enemies. But summons and followers are unnaffected. Spiff made this way harder than he had to. No Faendal (free follower. Free house. Extra gear to sell). No vegetable soup (endless stamina). No fetch quests in Whiterun (extra money). No guard tower chests outside Riften (lots of extra money and stuff). No Illusion spells (calm, frenzy, etc). Did he even get camping supplies? That's what makes it more impressive that he survived.
@@derpderpington824 Illusion spells are pretty much broken insuch a challenge so Spiff will use them in another attemot at this for sure.
It‘s not quite correct: the damage output of the opponents is x3, your own output is x0.25
So theres a weird glitch where you can cast all channel spells for Zero magicka if you have a very specific (to the decimal I think) magic regeneration rate. It was used in a few builds on the skyrim character building blogs ages ago. I think perhaps the fact that you were tired made you just happen to stumble across one of the specific magic regeneration rates that give you infinite channeled abilities. Once you got more tired from standing around or rested, you regen rate changed and thus it stopped working. Not sure if you care about any of this, but I thought I would mention it 😄

It was fun! I hope you keep trying until you succeed. I'm aware that if you ever succeed it will probably be... a three hour video, but I'd watch it in its entirety. It was cool. 😊
"The only reward is that you can stay in the farm as your own house"
False, you can also turn the farm into, well, a farm. Which means you can grow wheat and make potions. You can also build a stable, and receive passive income from workers you hire. No clue if they get paid after you hire them, or if it's a one-time payment for a lifetime of work, but it's also not really my problem.
Just make sure you never trigger the dragons spawning or you'll be dealing with them off and on again. Hey, now that I think about it, even if you can't wear armor nothings stopping you from making and selling it, right?

I love the idea of the feeble traveling merchant, but I feel like you could make it a little easier on yourself. Legendary is hard enough already without making it so you're essentially helpless in combat. Since it's a no exploits run, I'd go for at least being able to use any clothing as long as it doesn't actually give armor, and possibly limiting weapons to just daggers or maybe anything under 10 base damage or something like that. Either way I think it would be interesting to start with a lower difficulty challenge and do a series of you just making it harder and harder.

@@RaphaelAmbrosiusCosteau Since they're employed by Bethesda they're technically official DLC
Much enjoyed. Haven’t seen Skyrim be interesting in a while.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thanks 👍
The squeak when the skeleton attacked after fleeing through the door was incredible
I think that taking this farm from ghost(29:46) would make this run way easier. You could plant planty of crops(like wheat) or other alchemy ingredients. By planting blue mountain flower and wheat you could make healing potions and sell them to upgrade your farming empire to grow more plants and make more money
Spiff turns yet another game into a money-making tycoon game
Planting 1 Creep Cluster, 2 Mora Tapinella, 1 Scaly Pholiota in that ratio will net you the highest value potion possible with strictly grown crops.
@@Idrinkhoppes Plus it would be all organic too
I was thinking the exact same thing when he said he didn't need the plantation
This was so good. I'd love to see an attempt #2 when you're ready. No need to make it harder than it already is though.
Love this)) I like that Skyrim still get us all so much fun.
I absolutely love how they changed food in survival mode. I end up healing with just food a lot of the time because they buffed it sooooo much
Is this an official game mode now or is it a mod?
I kinda hate that not all food reduces your hunger. doesn't make sense to me and makes survival more tedious than it needs to be.
@Count Luke
it is and official game mode
@@shockingboring_ how so. taffy or an apple shouldnt fill you like a potato or a mammoth snout.
@@liquidsleepgames3661 still, the difference shouldn't be that enormous.
also I recently discovered that some of the problems I encounter could be linked to the Unofficial Skyrim Patch which seems to remove the hunger restoring aspect of most foods entirely.
sadly the patch is absolutely necessary to fix what bethesda considers ready for multiple releases over the years.
so until they fix that, guess I can't really play survival mode... and it has already been years with apparently few people noticing this issue ...
@@shockingboring_ You shouldn't use the official survival mod anyway. It's based off Chesko's Frostfall mod, he helped them with the official mod and then they stiffed him. Just use "Frostfall" with "Complete Alchemy and Crafting Overhaul" and "iNeed."
Edit: Quotation marks for clarity
I have not once, ever, heard spiff as terrified as when that skeleton attacked him. Never had I thought I would see the day that a drinker of yorkshire tea would have something to fear.
His power was taken from him. There was no tea and no exploits
only the gay english drink tea
This was so good and the ending was phenomenal.
It's always nice when you get to know a game well enough to get exited when you find a random item
Spiffing Brit: “I will not be tempted by anything off the side road until I get to the city”
Also Spiffing Brit: “There’s a farm, it looks good, I’m gonna do it… THERE’S A GHOST”
Spiff: He's probably friendly! It's going to be fine
Also Spiff: HE IS NOT FRIENDLY!

feel free to edit your comment with the timestamp!
Ideas for the next attempt:
-get yourself blessings that are not gear dependent
-in the first town, there is this really easy "lovers quarrel" quest, if you finish it you get yourself a really talented archer follower.
Besides that, I recommend power leveling stealth and illusion magic. You cast muffle on yourself, then invisibility, and then you can complete dungeons without even being attacked.
The secondary benefit of powerleveling illusion, is that as soon as you fear being spotted, you can cast calm or fear, or make them fight eachother.
Essentially it's perfect for infiltration missions where you don't want to attack people.
Then get Transmute Ore
All paths lead back to stealth archer. Truly a Todd Howard experience.
Awesome video, drama, action, stealing from other, had it all. Looking forward to the 2nd part
Great clip, and love the smash music include at the end.
Spiff, I would definitely like to see more of this challenge. You made me actually want to try legendary survival mode as well. Thanks!
This actually gave me a lot of perspective on what a normal mortal's life is like in Skyrim. Thank you, SpiffingBrit, for giving me writing perspective.
I hope you continue this. Love it!
I'd love to see a lot more of this. Like a regular series of this.
"I think we're actually ready to go and do our first quest" at 38:08 with 5 minutes left. It's a bold strategy, Cotton, let's see if it pays off for 'em.
5:04 vegetable soup is friggin op in skyrim, if you ever use a shield or lots of power attacks the vegetable stew lets you keep doing those indefinently
It is the power of VEGETABLES!
Absolutely! Vegetable Soup is actually worth going out of your way to make; it regenerates 1 stamina per second throughout its duration. The reason why this is OP is that blocking and power attacking only require you to have gas in the tank to get started, regardless of how much is actually used for the action. In other words, indefinite blocking and power attacking.

@@Robosium True. Though finding Leeks is its own little misery, isn't it?
This is the first time I have ever watched one of your videos and thought I’d have done something different, so here! When you began in riverwood, you can make a fair chunk of change by completing Camila’s love life side quest, which is 2 social interactions and no combat whatsoever! You also get a free follower of either Sven or Faendal so you don’t waste 500 gold on janassa. In Whiterun, you get 500 gold just for asking Mikael to leave Carlotta Valentina alone. (Can you tell I like getting involved in side characters love lives?) 200 gold for delivering a sword from Adrienne the blacksmith to her father in Dragonsreach, and of course a bit of gold in asking any blacksmith for an introductory course and then selling all of their materials back to them. Another favorite hack is to improve any weapons and armor you find and sell them at a markup. This was so fun to watch! Thanks for the best entertainment as always Spiff
Spiff darn you!!! Got me scratching my Skyrim itch I haven’t scratched in over a year!!! 😅 good on ya!!! And great video thank you for all your content
Survival mode is definitely the best way to experience Skyrim. It forces you to utilize so many more aspects of the game that you would otherwise skip over and, without fast travel, you often need to make efficient use of things in the immediate area since you can't bounce around the map as easily. I personally like to add mods that make the economy more expensive and realistic as well.
I almost exclusively play Legendary Survival, and funnily enough I also usually don't wear armor (got bored once and tried mage armor + melee weapons build and actually really liked it), so I relate to this video maybe a little more than I should... 😅
its a real shame toddy boy didn't lean into the world living aspect like the earlier ES games, imgaine how deep it could be by now.
For me, the best thing about survival mode is actually the fact that there is no passive health regen. Healing and avoiding damage becomes so much more meaningful when you can't just take a small break between combats and be in top shape all the time.
Spiff: Can't cut wood.
Logging Saw: Am I a joke to you?
Like the spiffing Brit I’ve spent way to many hours in this game and can say with certainty this is the only way I could get a challenge out of the game now haha
Would love to see more of this!
loved it. my favorite of yours yet
Innkeeper: "Ysolda, dear, why do you put up with Legless? He's just using you. What makes him so special?"
Ysolda: "It's because he gave me his mammoth tusk." * winks *
Innkeeper: "Oooo! You go, GURRRL!!!"
that can be taken out of context
That's it that's the joke
Skyrim:"So you gonna play the game the intendet way and plan ahead?"
The Spiffing Brit:"That´s the neat part - you don´t"
This is a really cool idea! I would love to see more!!!
I love underpowered challenges like this, and would definitely like to see you try again.
I enjoyed how you decided to not just sleep the whole time in Alvor's house. You actually progressed during the challenge.
Wouldn't sleeping 100 days kill him because of survival mode?
@@MDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMD I think they meant just returning to alvors house to sleep every night
I don't understand you can just sleep the entire time. Hunger doesn't kill you in survival node. How is this a challenge?
@@derekking9670 It can be a challenge if you say, "Let's see how much I can level up and progress through different questlines in 100 days," so you aren't measuring success solely on whether or not you're alive by the end of the set timeframe 👍
It just goes to show how fun Skyrim is despite its shortcomings that you can genuinely have fun trying to complete a survival challenge.
what shortcomings?
Skyrim is an amazing game as a whole. The only people who don't consider it one of the best games ever made are the idiots who think Dark Souls games are great and think Skyrim is bad just because it doesn't have the same combat mechanics and combat focus Dark Souls has. And no, I am not strawmanning the Skyrim critics, that is their actual argument you can find time and time again just by looking at their arguments whenever they post them.
This was really cool and I hope to see you do another run. A suggestion for making it harder, in case you do try again: No magic, bow is the only equipment you can use. That way, even your damage source relies on you spending money or grinding resources to craft your own arrows.
Just cant wait for part2, this hardcore challengs are the best
Good thing no dragons can spawn until after the Whiterun tower fight, would've made things extra spooky since they can also attack settlements
