    A Color Grading Companion - The Vivid Light Blend Mode
    There are 27 blend modes in Adobe Photoshop and if you are anything like the "me before I learned them all", you are only using three, maybe four to their maximum potential. One of those you may be missing out on is the Vivid Light Blend Mode. It is a powerhouse for color grading, but on the surface, it looks far from it!
    Eight Blend Modes don't function like the rest of their friends in the bunch.
    These eight Blend Modes rely heavily on the Fill slider. Each blend mode is a sort of calculation happening in the background after you select it. While they all have different calculations, they are essentially pre-programmed to turn pixels on and off, add, subtract, multiply or divide pixels, or told to call upon other blend modes. The Vivid Light Blend mode is a mixture of Color Burn and Color Dodge and interacts with your image differently based on the selected layer.
    Because Vivid Light uses Color Burn and Color Dodge as its base, it makes for some beautiful color graded images.
    Here are some quick tips for using the Vivid Light Blend Mode:
    1. Always use it with Fill. Opacity won’t do much unless it is used in conjunction with Fill.
    2. Start with Fill to get the look you want and use Opacity to control the intensity
    3. Because Vivid Light relies heavily on the selected layer, be sure to experiment with different hues of the color you are applying, they will make different effects that either lean more toward the color dodge or the color burn.
    4. If your image already has a lot of deep contrast in it, I would forgo the Vivid Light Blend mode and experiment with another because it will make it very contrasty.
    5. Don’t forget to use Masks and Blend If to gain even more control over the effect.

    Blake, this is exactly what I needed! I've been using soft light or overlay for everything, and this just blew my mind! I didn't know that Fill controlled this one. Thank you for doing this!

      Glad it was helpful! Pretty cool stuff! There are so many versatile blend modes, but we overlook them because we don't use them often or educators tend to stick to the same ones. There are over 20 of them for a reason :) Adobe knows what they are doing, lol!

    OK, I've got to give this a try - fill instead of opacity.... The results look great! (I've driven down that street a million times, and it never looked that good!). Love this kind of info - keep 'em coming, Blake!

    What I want to try now is to copy my image, add some saturation and contrast and then blend it with the original image using vivid light as you described. Maybe all this would be better accomplished some other ways Maybe it won't do anything good for the image? I'll find out later. Thanks for the great information. I may be purchasing the course eventually.

    I tried this technique with photoshop elements and I found that the opacity slider is the only one available and I do not see the fill slider. Is there a trick that allows us to mimic it in Photoshop Elements?

    Thank you, Blake great video ...as usual. One question please... when you clicked on the lady's eye the solid colour changed to the eye colour. However when I try to do this on my image the colour doesn't change. Please kindly advise how to do, as per your great video. Thank you.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  6 лет назад

      Thanks, Paul. You have to be in the color picker for it to change. Double click on the solid color fill icon in the layers and the color picker will open. In there move to the image and you should see an eye dropper for the color selection.

    Well now! I learned more than I bargained for! Thanks +Blake! But one question re: the portrait. Her skin is yellow. That is totally unreal! I see this all the time and I'm sick of seeing it. There's two things that know of to correct this. One is to use color balance, and then you add blue. The other is to add an HSL layer, and shift that color. There's a third thing you can do: Do both the color balance and and hue shift. All three of these require masking most of the time. IS THERE AN EASIER WAY? I see yellow skin FAR too often. I don't like it. Human skin always has red in it. Sometimes I can't even get close to natural looking skin. HOW does one do this? WHAT is the best way?
    Your end result -- her skin is orange. I have never met a woman with yellow skin nor orange skin.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  6 лет назад +3

      You are correct, however, with art it is not always about the most natural skin, but the overall mood and feel of the color grade.
      There are many ways to correct for it, but I didn't mind the end result because the surrounding color grade helped support the color of her skin. In reality, there is no perfect color of skin if you really think about it. The light that is reflected from the skin is what is captured, so as long as the surrounding colors look good with the color of the skin, it should be okay. If you correct for the skin it defeats the purpose of color grading.
      Do a simple search on Google images for Fashion photography and you will find that the skin tones are less important than the art being created.
      HOWEVER, if you are doing a headshot for a business card or corporate photos, you should stick to natural skin tones. That is about the only time I really pay that close attention to the natural color of the skin. To each their own though. Tomato Tomotto! :)
