WOW! GAME CHANGER! I cannot tell you how often I have struggled with skin tones after I dodge and burn on the traditional gray layer in Soft Light. You are absolutely correct. Color do get over saturated easily. I often would put the blend mode to Luminosity in hopes that the color stay true or reduce the flow of the dodge tool. Your explanation and examples were fantastic. This is exactly what I needed. No one has even taught how Linear Light affects photos (except to sharpen in High Pass). Thank you for this. Anxious to try it out now.
My pleasure! Linear Light is my favorite Blend Mode. It really is the best one in the list IMO. I have all the topics on it I want to share for a course sometime. It's pretty crazy how much it can do and what it can be used for. It's addicting to use :)
Great tutorial, Blake! Yes Linear Light is a superior blend mode for this kind of work. For absolute colour-control I use the Luminosity blend mode on a Curves adjustment instead of a 50 % filled layer nowadays. Not only do I avoid any colour-shift that way but I also get a total control over local contrast with the Curve at the same time! On top of that the Curve adjustment protects the absolute blacks and whites from clipping in the histogram ( as long as the white and black points are untouched in the Curve tool ). This way I can fine-tune my curve to make sure my “Burning” is going to have less or more contrast, -and the same goes for the “Dodging” of course. Would you agree?
Wow and all these years I thought I was just not great at it, the colour shifts drove me nuts. I cant believe this is such an effective and easy fix. Thank you Blake

Blake Great tutorial and great explanation. I downloaded the actions and one small change I would recommend for anyone using the "Flavors" is to modify the actions to first Select Layer "Quick D&B". This way if you move off that layer and then decide you want the "Dark Flavored" or "Light Flavored", etc it will apply the Blend If to the correct layer. Thank You.
I wish RUclips would allow me to like this more than one time. Simply awesome!! Thank you so much. Can't wait to check out more tutorials and the panel as well.
I am surprised. I will try it, and probably adopt this method from now on, because I have noticed the extra saturation that results of dodging and burning the traditional way. Thanks a lot!

Wow, I am deeply impressed by that simple idea which works amazing! Esp the quick D&B enhances whole images at one click and its so fast to mask it out. Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial and the brilliant action, Blake. I have been using PS since version 2 and have been watching tons of tutorials befor but never heard of this method. For me, the results are much more pleasant than with soft light. Keep up the good work!

Great technique! But you're right: Lots of things to remember. I'm waiting to see the difference from just duplicating the actrual image layer and just dodge and burn the copy of the original layer. You guys are so good at making things harder. Haha!!!
Lol, not really. The problem with duplicating the layer and D and B on that is that it is not conducive to a layered workflow. Anytime you add a duplicate copy or a stamped layer you can really only work above it and the work below it is not as important anymore. This way you can maintain a healthy layered workflow. Its not harder, its smarter ;)
Wow, thank you, thank you, thank you for this. I was dealing with exactly the problems you describe in this video just yesterday. This is such a clean and elegant answer to my problem. Appreciation & Respect. 🙂
at 8:53 you said dodging and burning becomes a masking technique to protect certain areas of the image... pls explain... or maybe you meant blend if...?
Blake, Thanks for a great video. One question, if you are D&B on a grey layer, does it matter if the D&B brush is set to Highlight/Midtones/Shadows? If you are on the grey layer, isn't there is only mid-tones.
I always dodge and burn with a brush at 1-4% flow and with a brush set to 2 pixels size, i use the curves method , one layer for dodge one layer for burn
Thanks a lot Blake for the great tutorial! I just would like kindly to ask, if I can use your offered action for my commercial works as well? Thank you and God bless you!

Hi Blake. I often watch your videos and find them very instructive. I wonder: Instead of using the dodge/burn tool on a linear light layer, Do I get the same result if I instead paint with a black/white brush?. Kind regards, Micke
Yes you could, but then you should change the opacity of that brush or it works too fast. Just remember to change it back. Or use the opacity of the layer to regulate it.

Clearly the 'Set current layer' instruction. Running PS 24.1.0 on a Mac. Choosing the 'Continue' button still nothing.
Very difficult to deduce without context. I'd need to see pictures of your actions pane and your layers and what the action is supposed to be doing. I can't tell just from the written issues.
@@f64Academy Reply appreciated Blake. Thx I got it sorted. I was trying to run the extension Dark Favored option before running the QUICK D&B action! Of course it failed!
I think you should change the title from, "You are dodging and burning all Wrong!" to "Are you dodging and burning just one way!" I played around with this technique a number of years back and like it for certain situations and dislike it for others. I use this technique, along with 50% soft light, and my personal favorite is using curves. The most important thing to remember! With some pictures, you might experience "color shifts". Some People use the curves and 50% fill layer set to luminosity or linear light to avoid these shifts. I recommend against it because adding light SHOULD affect the color. (If you look at a blue pen in the dark it will look gray, but move the pen into the light and you see blue.) So light, in fact, make everything become saturated. A hue/sat adjustment layer allows me to control HOW MUCH the light is going to affect the saturation. When you blend it "Linear light" or "Luminosity" it doesn't affect saturation at all and everything can start to look grayish after a while if one isn't careful. Love your videos.
It's a common technique here on YT, to make the titles catchy. I'm just not brave/confident enough as a beginner to use these words. I just say quick, easy way or things like that in my titles.
Thanks so much Blake for this wonderful tutorial. I was actually able to do it also!!!!! Hey- I downloaded and installed your action but I can't get it to work. When I open an image and then in the actions panel select (for eg. Midtone favoured... I get a pop up saying " the command "set" is not currently available". Am I doing something wrong?
This is awesome, thank you! I love d&b and also prefer the grey layer over the two layers with masks option. I have also noticed that both the curves and the soft light method is often oversaturating skin tones, particularly when burning newborn skin which is quite red to begin with and I’m hoping that this method will help prevent that. I will try this tomorrow 👍
I did present my own "new" version a couple months ago that did not rely on the 50% grey layer... And now this! I'll have to try this as well now, cheers Blake! Just, I still prefer a solution based on my method because it allows me to precisely erase a brush without having to paint over with grey. ;) So I suppose in the end I'll merge our 2 techniques... And wait for your video where you'll talk about it 😉😁👍🏻
Love this, but since i work with portraits and skin retouching i like having even more control over dodging and burning, so i prefer having separate curve layers, one for light and other for dark, this way i can use adjustment layers for example in the areas where i have to fix the saturation etc.
I found this worked better than a soft light layer when dodging, in terms of keep color accuracy(ie, the area didn't become de-satured). However, when burning I found it to be worse than soft light and when lightening dark areas, too much saturation was introduced in these area.
Blake, Great video but can't you get even better control of your dodging & burning by using 2 sets of CURVES -- one for lights, one for darks -- instead of Photoshop's more limited Dodge & Burn Tool with this linear light technique? (And of course still fine tune further with Blend If)?
It's all about what you prefer. I much prefer this method for me because I don't like to be too technical with my db approach. I like it to be more fluid, more painterly. This method is my preference, it's not about control but more like painterly buildup. It's up to the individual.
Blake a comment and question... I really like the method and will start using because it totally makes sense. My question is why do you fill the D/B layer with 50% grey, its an extra un-necessary step, you can do the same with an empty layer.
You can't actually. Not if you use the dodge and burn tool. Someone did a tutorial on that and tried to debunk some myth about dodging and burning and now everyone is on his band wagon, lol. (Making the comments on this video a nightmare) If you use a blank layer you have to use a black or white brush. The intensity is more challenging to control. Yes you can with fill or with opacity, but the dodge and burn tools are there for a reason. They create a slow and natural buildup process, but they NEED data to work. The 50% grey provides the data for them to work. To say it's un-necessary is completely dependent upon the method chosen. It's very necessary with the DB tools.
Hi there, I have been using your action with great great success, but after the last updates only work the Quick D&B, any insight what to do?...maybe an update on the action, ? thanks...
Gday Blake, this is awesome but can you please let me know (either via comment or another vid) why this method is better than a curves adjustment that is masked or blend if'd. You can get some very precise and minute adjustments in curves whilst conserving the document size
I reserve Curves in my workflow for heavy tonal lifting. To get it precise requires a lot of tedious tweaking IMO. when I am Dodging and Burning I like it to be more fluid and quick. This method, for me, is very quick and produces incredible results that don't require too much tweaking of curves, masks, blend if, opacity, etc. It feels more like a kinetic process too me, much like my painting days. It really comes down to personal preference.
@@f64Academy bloody hell mate I didn’t even have time to grab a coffee and you’ve already responded, I doff my cap to your lightening quick RUclips reflexes!!! Okay cool that’s good to know, that provides a lot of context and is super helpful. I grew up on curves so I’m quite partial to them but I like your dynamism versus heavy lifting analogy. Also thanks for the actions, super useful
How does this compare to using curve layers set to luminosity? After trying multiple approaches, it seems to be the best way I could find. I’ve never tried this method though.
From your earlier videos I watched and tried your two layer curve adjustment and the soft light/clipping mask dodge&burn techniques. This linear light technique is by far the easiest and gives the best result, thanx
I have been trying this. I still find that making 2 curves adjustment layers and using screen and multiply to do my dodges and burns and then adjusting the curve itself gives me more fine control for complex subjects. And it is a little quicker, but that might be my fine tuning with the blend if takes me time getting it right. Is this meant more for simpler subjects like portraits?
New to editing using photoshop, have never used actions before. Do you have to download anything special to get the actions to work? Sorry for the newbie question, just trying to learn.

Not necessarily. But you can still use the idea with that panel, just have to change the blend modes.
Clever! I dig it! I'll definitely be working that in, thank you!
Awesome!
(Making the comments on this video a nightmare)
If you use a blank layer you have to use a black or white brush.
@@f64Academy Blake gotcha and it makes sense, thank you for the clarification. Great channel brother! keep up the good work
Outstanding.Thank you.
Hi there, I have been using your action with great great success, but after the last updates only work the Quick D&B, any insight what to do?...maybe an update on the action, ? thanks...
I'm not sure what is going on. What is not working? Are you getting error messages?
Thanks for this information and the free actions. Of course I added them to my new My Panel 2 which also rocks...
Yes!!!! Love it! My sincere pleasure!
Your channel's motto really should be "work smarter, not harder" so many massive timesavers.
Wow i never saw this anywhere that actually amazing ty
😁
Amazing. Can I use the brush tool with low flow% on linear light layer instead?
Yes, absolutely
How does this compare to using curve layers set to luminosity? After trying multiple approaches, it seems to be the best way I could find. I’ve never tried this method though.
Man, my best advice... Try them both. Then see what works best for you. You will be the best judge for your workflow.
Many thanks for your tutorial videos I have a question about saving photos what is the best file for screen and which file for printing?
It depends on what you need them for. Some printers want a Tiff others a jpeg will suffice.
@@f64Academy thank you so much i learning many things from you i appreciate 🙏
From your earlier videos I watched and tried your two layer curve adjustment and the soft light/clipping mask dodge&burn techniques. This linear light technique is by far the easiest and gives the best result, thanx
Great to hear! I thought so too :)
Those is meant for speed in my opinion. I much prefer the alt control for quick DB switching. But again it's all personal preference.
thanks.... Still, I feel that the best way is to do the bulk of DB in the rawconvertor (CaptureOne) where there is much better color management.
Cool!
New to editing using photoshop, have never used actions before. Do you have to download anything special to get the actions to work? Sorry for the newbie question, just trying to learn.
No problem. If you have Photoshop these actions will work.
Is there a reason that you use the dodge and burn tool instead of a black or white brush?
It's slower and allows more control with the increased fill idea. Black and white tend to move too fast.
@@f64Academy Many thanks. Interesting -- I'll give it a try!
Well tutorial sir. Thank u. Prabu from India. Tn
This is awesome Blake, thanks so much!
My pleasure!
BTW I D and B a LOT in my Pet Photography and I'm right now editing a picture, just applied it. SOOOOO good. BTW I use ZE and PE a huge amount also :-)
Thank you, Blake, for such a useful action! This is something I will definitely be using in my workflow. 😉
Perfect!
Interesting. I have never tried this. I use the curves method to dodge and burn.
You can use the same blend mode and fill combo with curves as well.
Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
