After reading the book I don't think it was ever covered what happened to Marcus Luttrell's actual rifle. He never lost it during his deal and I sure as shit would be hanging on to it forever after the work it put in, but maybe it got recycled after he was evac'd?
yeah i wanna know what happened to all the rifles, i know the taliban got at least 3, it’s also kinda speculated that axe carried a M4 and a MK12, i don’t know if that’s true it’s just what i heard. but i know the taliban got everyone’s rifles but the rifle marcus had. i’m sure they are lost. in the footage from the taliban you only see 2 M4s so that means when it was filmed they either hadn’t found axes body or axe just lost his rifle and it wasn’t with him when he was killed. no telling what happened to them but i wish they where in a museum somewhere.
You described the STORY more than you described the gun. What Unit was the real gun in. What caliber. what kind of scope. What paint was used on the gun. What was the real gun called. Who used the gun in real life. Where was the gun used in real life. A "documentary" needs to have these facts in them.
The real gun was used in Iraq and is still being used in Afghanistan by various units. Its military nomenclature was the MK12. It was a modified M16 with an 18" match grade barrel. The optic that was typically issued was the Leupold Mk3, but was commonly swapped by the used for something they preferred. It was chambered in 5.56 and used the Mk 262 Mod 1 ammo manufactured by Black Hills utilizing the 77gr Sierra Open Tipped Match bullet, otherwise know as the Sierra Mach King. It came from the factory black but was then painted with typically spray paint out of a can by the individual it was issued to. Hope this helps.
I actually did know all that but it's still interesting. I would have liked some details on what makes it a mark 12, what a 12 is. Ar's Quite plentiful out there and Finding meaningful differences between one rifle and another can be difficult.
The "built" rifles came with Knights Armament 2 Stage triggers.....very similar to the modern Geissele SSF triggers! Equally pricey but very nice single and two stage triggers! You can accomplish a very accurate trigger with the Geissele SSA-E trigger for about $150.00 less. And perfectly legal on a AR15 clone rifle.
Nice rifle....but a bit far from a "replica" Axe Mk12 Mod 1. Missing: M16A1 lower, KAC foregrip, Doctor RDS on ARMS mount and cap on front of scope, SOPMOD stock is painted in the movie, AN/PEQ2 on rail, and finally a Mk12 Gas block. Outside of all that, your rifle is pretty cool!

m16a2 lower is historically accurate. its said they even kept the full auto capabilities just in case SHTF. reason they went with m16a2 lower was because they had a shitload of surplus hanging around. mk12 SPR was originally just an upper receiver. than eventually a complete rifle. as for the stock, they did use b5 stocks, not sure if they had qd back then though.
There are two primary versions of the Mk12. This is the Mod 1 with the KAC rail. The Mod 0, which wasn’t issued to the unit in the film, had the PRI handguard.
Great movie but it destroyed the market for anyone wanting to build a MK12 mod 1 now because you can’t find any of the parts anymore especially the KAC-Knight's Armament Long FF RAS, MK12 Mod 1 handguard and rail covers been out of stock for years.
Rather Hollywood self-congratulatory (imho)! I spent 42+ years as a senior Naval officer and then as a Lockheed Martin executive (including such things as graduating with distinction from senior war college), so I know a good deal about the military and its history. Virtually every movie I have ever seen concerning the military has countless factual errors. Admittedly, most of these discrepancies do not significantly compromise the fundamental story, and sometimes they may essentially be required because vintage equipment is no longer readily available. For example: - In the first Midway movie, the USS Lexington (CVA/T-16) is used, but it had not yet been built and it had both an angled flight deck and steam catapults, neither of which existed in 1942. - Similarly, in Tora! Tora! Tora!, T-6/SNJ Texan trainers were widely employed as substitutes for US Navy and IJN carrier borne attack/fighter aircraft, but they took no part in the 7 DEC 41 Hawaiian air attack. I fully understand why Hollywood makes these sorts of accommodations. HOWEVER, this RUclips extols the motion picture industry’s efforts to be historically accurate, and that’s - at best - a myth. Hollywood may sometimes do so when it’s relatively easy and inexpensive, but not when it requires any substantial effort or cost.
Roy Kiefer check out other movies this movie gun house has worked on, as well as videos they’ve done with Larry Vickers, maybe you’ll have a better appreciation for them afterwards
@Justin Mishler: As I’m quite certain my initial comment indicated, I was NOT focusing on this Hollywood “gun house” per se. Rather, my point is the general lack of detailed accuracy that Hollywood accepts in ALL ASPECTS of its militarily-oriented productions (which is why I intentionally selected two illustrations that had nothing whatsoever to do with small arms). Here’s another example: Last night my wife and I saw the current movie Midway, The dive bomber digitally animated throughout the presentation correctly is the Douglas SDB Dauntless, designed by one of few America’s genius aerodynamicist (Ed Heinemann). For its time, it was a superb attack aircraft. BUT, the movie constantly gets the interior, trailing edge, perforated flaps (speed breaks) wrong - there was only one on each wing and it only rotated downward,. However, the movie constantly shows BOTH an upper and a lower perforated speed breaks located proximate to each wing root. Factually, that’s incorrect and it probably would have been a risky design - potentially too much aerodynamic loading on the wing carry through structure and the possibility of catastrophic asymmetrical deployment.
Roy Kiefer this video is specifically about this movie gun house which is why I commented about looking into them more. If they say that try to get stuff perfect and they do they aren’t telling you a myth or lying
@Justin Mishler: Please explain what precludes me from reasonably expanding the limited focus of a RUclips video to include a larger - but still entirely relevant - point.
