Probably the coolest, old school sounding soldiers name I've ever heard. Monty LeClair sounds like name of a Anglo-French WWII SOE officer parachuted behind enemy lines lol
If the videos gets up to 15k views today. I'll put up the next part. There are four total parts to this episode from TAC-TV Season 2. So make sure you like it, share it, and comments.
I used a 4x and the M16A4 has a 22 inch barrel. I rarely used an M4 and I'm not very tall. But even still, the M16 was such a confidence inspiring system to me and room clearing isn't fun but I'll damn well do it.
There is actually a really good reason why the mk.12 spr and other m16/m4 based marksman platforms are still issued with the full auto trigger sear and that is because the trigger pull is much more consistent then the burst trigger sear. And when going for a precision platform trigger consistency is crucial.
@Michael Srite That's not what he means. He's talking about the difference in trigger pull between a weapon running a burst sear and an automatic sear while both are in semi. I've never gotten to use a burst fire weapon. But from people who have, I've been told that auto has a smoother pull in semi versus a burst weapon in semi.
I've never bought a complete rifle or carbine from Centurion Arms. However, I've used a lot of their components (rails, BCG's and such) with great results.
This interview is really cool, my platoon tested the SPR concept for the MCWL, I think it was around 2002, and my battalion was the first Marine unit to issue the SPR. I kinda knew the rifle was developed at Crane, so its neat to LAV talk to the guys who developed the gun.
Yeah, the rest will be going up over the next week or so. Thanks for watching!! Make sure you share it and click the thumbs up if you like the content.
The SPR was issued in full auto as during development Crane had been given M16 A1 recievers to dispose of and they decided since the spr has a heavy barrel anyways it could be used as a light support weapon if absolutely needed. The full length stock was used as the collapsing M4 stock and shorter carbine length recoil system caused bolt bounce issues on full auto. that went away with the rifle length system. However as most guys knew they wouldnt use full auto the stock was often switched to a collapsing m4 system once it got to units.
I carried a Mk12 MOD 1 in Afganistan back in 2008 with 2nd Battalion 7th Marines. Although I never had this issue, some other DM's experienced stoppages using the 77-grain ammo and switched back over to green tip 65-grain. However, mine performed beautifully during my specific engagements and never felt the need to make the switch.
Great vid as usual LAV. I absolutely love the MK12 platform. I would really like to see it issued army wide for SDMs over the EBR. The 14 platform and 7.62 are great unless you're the guy carrying it. As an SDM in Iraq I found myself using my M4 with an acog over the 14 almost always, unless i knew we would be stationary or out in a totally rural AO. Again thanks for the videos Larry and keep up the awesome work. Geronimo!!!
I always wanted to do a MK-12 SPR clone, but make one change, and that's the use of a 6.5 Grendel barrel. That extra reach of the Grendel with something like this would be sweet.
Does anyone know if the 77gr stuff is used on all missions? I imagine at 600 yards, the M855 would lose a lot of energy and wouldn't be a fatal hit. As a thought, I wonder if the M193 is a better out to 300 yards but I imagine beyond that it would suffer significantly, even if you could hit your target.
So a sniper rifle, in the American sense of the word, is a rifle used by the shooter in a two-man team, separate from their squad and platoon. They take shots closer to 800-1000 meters today. The Russian definition of sniper is our definition for DMR. The Russians armed a designated marksman on the platoon level, to sit back in the trench, or do Recce-overwatch, not more than 500 meters behind the main infantry force. So, shorter range, more rate-of-fire, less precision and calculation needed for DMRs and their optics.
In simple terms DMR's are semi automatic Sniper support systems such as the M110, Mk11, Mk12, SVD, M1A, etc. DMR's are usually issued to the best shooter in an infantry squad. A Sniper rifle is issued to trained Snipers. Sniper rifles are usually bolt action rifles such as the M24 or USMC M40,M2010, AI-.338s etc, but Snipers may choose a semi automatic rifle such as the M110 or M107.
I like Metal Head's explanation but I want to add in that everyone wishes they could be a sniper. It's usually a gruesome training program that you have to be selected for. I recall a Navy SEAL instructor once said that their sniper program is one of the most sought after role and a lot of people don't make it. Whereas a DMR is usually someone picked out by the CO to be put into a couple of weeks training course and they're cycled back into the squad as a DMR. Usually the best shooter of the squad/platoon will be selected for DMR training and they're given a very basic run down of how to shoot and measure range. However, that is not always the case. Sometimes just some random person is selected for DMR and it's nearly impossible to fail the course unless you just don't show up or something.
I think at the time of the video, the Mark 12 is nearing its lifecycle. Right now, no unit has the mark 12 anymore. They got the M110 in full stock and free float rails on all SF M4 issued rifles. So if you buy a Mark 12, it's really a relic of a era long gone.
this is interesting im actually building a spr at the moment ive changed some things up like hand guard and the comp things that are little out of my price range at the moment but i really do like the concept
Watch all of the optics in slow-mo. Their is a reason they need to be well constructed to hold up to recoil. Match a Mk17 (SCAR) in slo-mo, it’s even harsher.
Nice video keep it up can you tell me how a rifle like that can have a free floated barrel when there is a gas tube that connects to the the barrel to the chamber
The gas tube is connected to the front gas block which is attached to barrel in the MK 12 Mod 0 it was attached to the ARMS folding front sight/gas block.......in the Mod 1 it was attached to the Badger Low profile gas block. In the rear of all AR platforms the gas tube just sticks thru locking ring/nut into the chamber where the carrier gas tube connects to it for cycle.
I believe Wylde has to do with the chamber design. I recently purchased an Eagle Arms (division of Armalite), and it's chambered in .223 Wylde, in which it will fire both .223 and 5.56 NATO.
I know some guys run the red dot on top after replacing the ring, but what are your thoughts about offset 45 degree sights or 45 degree red dots? The offset seems like it could lend itself to maintaining a cheek hold, even coming up from a sul position (versus low ready) with the rifle.
After running both, I recommend the 45 degree angle offset. You can put the mount between the 2 scope ring mounts. Larue makes a bad ass offset mount for micro dots or T1s. The big advantage to that is not having to lift your head or change position to acquire targets, you simply turn the rifle a bit while still maintaining your cheek weld and eyes on target.
Thanks Derek. I was on a stalk and had a buck pop out in front of me at about 35-45 yards and my 1-4 scope would've taken about half a second to get on target. I had never even cared for offset sights or anything like it before that moment. After running through the moment a few more times in my head, it certainly FELT like something on the offset would've been faster and I am glad to hear from someone who has tried both.
Great program, buddy! I love the MK-12! Hey Larry, what gas block/ffs is that on the first closeup shot of a MK-12 mod 1 i believe with the ACOG sight? Its not the PRI or others im familiar with. Any info on that? Thanks in advance and thanks for a great channel!
Perhaps some unique systems could be adopted for special scopes on this gun. Ones that has a drone triangulation with a spotter and gunner in a real time targeting systems. I would imagine that this could make the difference in saving ammo in many cases, to say the least. The drone alone will make an enemy think about changing position and put a fire under their ass. We'll find some good uses for plastics, yet. The drones will be so easy to learn that kids can become experts at least with the drone tech. and help to pay for the project. It's what I would call a win win win situation here. Get the boys at skunk works hammering this out. It would even help a General get a birds eye on real time combat.
futurepj96 hey man, the A2 sight rifle is Larry's "SDMR" rifle. It's a modified m16a4 rifle the army started using. It's similar to the mk12 but a bit different. The marines also use something similar but it's called the SAM-R rifle. It has a flip up like the mk12, but again a little different in features
The BCM mark 12 comes in at 9 pounds naked, that is ridiculously over weight for a 223/556 AR , Plenty of AR's exist that can get the same accuracy and fill the same niche yet they are 1.5 -- 2 pounds lighter, no thanks BCM, no point in lugging that around when I could lug something just as accurate but way lighter
Sasmodog yep, you could buy any # of 18" mil spec uppers that are 1 lb or more lighter, and prob pay half the price because it's not labeled "mk12", still shoots good though
Isn't the Mk.12 just a glorified M16 with a heavy barrel and match ammo? Even though it's "accurized" and all, why wouldn't you still opt for a 30 round mag over 20? It's not an AR-10.
I like the SAM-R, the Marine Corps version of the Mk. 12 a little better. Reason being, its barrel actually has a slightly different chambering, called the SAM-R chamber. It's tighter than 5.56 NATO, but it's not quite the .223 Wylde. More accurate chamber, probably specified for Mk. 262 ammo.
All the photos I've ever seen of a Mk 12 in a combat zone show them with a 30 round mag. It's not limited to 20 round mags. 20 round mag makes the gun look more "sniper-ish" for the looks though.
i am also right handed but my left eye is dominant and i am faster reloading with my right hand. My personal weapon was a C7A1 diemaco with an acog scope and yours?
Ok my question to you is and i dont know if this is the correct english word so dont laugh if i say it wrong.... do you have a short flask i dont know if the word flask is correct, the part that you put in your shoulder? Do you use your SGL-31 for CQB and that is the reason you put a reddot on it? Because i always thought and im not talking about real life experience that the reddot is not verry good for human target size ranges over 200 metres because the target is to small and would dissapear behind the red dot... what are you thoughts about it?
i think you mean "butt-stock"? The US army seems to not have too huge an issue engaging targets with the aimpoint compM2 at distances of 300-400m, Is it as good as a 4x optic like trijicon for that role? no. But thats why squad DMRs like this "sniper" with his Mk12 (I quote that because thats not really a sniper rifle, its more fills the DMR role.) exist which is good for targets at 400-800m with a variable optic like a 4-12 or something. I would never use my gun past 50m much less 400m.
The military needs to replace the 14.5 inch M4 barrel with the civilian 16.5 inch barrel for increased velocity, range and ballistics. It would be the perfect gap between CQB and DMR.
Why make the military rifles look more like the civilian ones...we already have to deal with their bitching with collapsible stocks and pistol grips. dont give them more fire.
Gren Moyo it's not about making them look like civilians rifles it's to give the 5.56mm NATO better performance. A 5.56 NATO performs like a .22LR when fired through a 10 inch commando barrel. If you have a 16.5 inch barrel it can be used effectively from house to house fighting to long range sniping.
Then they can't use the bayonet. The 14.5 barrel length is used only because you can then attach a standard bayonet that can be used with a 20 inch barrel as well.
Just to raise hell, what the f is wrong with this "west coast" Navy SEAL's sleeves? Don't they teach then how to roll sleeves up in the Navy? That is just nasty.

In the Philippines we use a similar type of weapon called the MSSR. And, recently it has evolved variants such as an SPR and DMR variants.
In a way that's a better system. Mk12 is outdated now we use the scar20

If you have a 16.5 inch barrel it can be used effectively from house to house fighting to long range sniping.
you dont need to defend your argument, I am aware of those advantages. im merely bringing in the laws of unintended consequences.
Jesse Simmons In actuality, two inches isn't going to do jack dick. A 10.3 mk18 shooting mk262 isn't going to be much more outgunned by a m4.
Then they can't use the bayonet. The 14.5 barrel length is used only because you can then attach a standard bayonet that can be used with a 20 inch barrel as well.
So much better with the original PRI rail.
