Did this job on the truck that my father use to own. I miss working on things with him. I have heard it clanking around for a few years and figured it was time to freshen it up. Rides smooth and straight now Pop! Thanks for watching over me!
Did you need an alignment afterward?
@@roberth912 if you mess with tie rods then yes
Or, if your truck is like mine with over 400 000 km on it and way too many hard winters, you will also need a grinder, a torch, plenty of penetratating oil, a light for working at night, a tarp for working in the rain, a new brake hose because the one you barely touched broke right off, a flaring kit, and about 8 hrs of your time. I got a full length movie here!
Hahaha brother I hear you.
Lol...yes!
the shock method is pretty cool, I'll try that. I think my dad used that on my head a few times when I was a kid.
Thanks for posting these videos. They're very informative and helpful. A couple of improvements to this one would be: 1) Show and explain the process of raising the suspension to ride height. It is mentioned, but not shown. 2) The torque spec for the lug nuts is different depending on the year and stud size from 1997-1999 with 12mm studs (100 Lb-Ft) , to 2000-2002 which use 14mm studs (150 Lb-Ft) .
I agree with the point ashemoski mentioned here. I couldn't understand what you were trying to set as far as ride height? I imagine that would be a "required" setting before rolling the vehicle out on the highway. Otherwise, great video.
Preciate the Cambridge adjustments
Never knew it slid back and forth
Same here, nice knowing that.
PROTIP: Never re-use cotter pins or castle nuts. Same advice goes for most suspension related fasteners.
I did lol
Love idea great work Dubble hammer 🔨 👌
Hey A1 is the ball joint pre greased cause I didn't see any grease fitting. Thanks
Hey guys can y'all do a video of a lower control arm with torsion bar removal?
Are there any videos on removing the bushings on these arm controls???????
Where do I get an oil filter relocator kit like the one on this truck? Do you guys carry them? Any tips on getting the upper control arm bolts out if they are seized? Dealing with that in the morning- may have to resort to cutting the bolts out with my angle grinder😞
Is this the same procedure with fords with air ride suspension??
With that upper control arm is the ball joint already pre greased
Great video. I had been noticing this kind of rattling noise the past few weeks so today I went and looked around while greasng the front end of my 2001 F150 4x4 flareside. That's when I noticed the left side rubber seal being broken and I could pull it off.. So looks like I'm going to need to replace the control arm and will just do both sides since it appears the rubber seals are almost all deteriorated. As well it seems not to cost but about $10 more each to replace the "entire control arm" instead of trying to just replace the upper bushing/seals.
After watching the specific section on setting the ride height, what I think he just means is; when you set the 2 bolts using the paint marks he made before removing the bolts, that is in fact setting the ride height back to "roughly" where it was before removing. That gets it close to where it was until you can get the front end aligned again after replacing the control arms.

Per ford installation instructions the bolt heads are supposed to be facing toward each other. Why was that not done on this truck
Thanks for the informative video. i'm replacing both on my 2001 F-150 and you answered questions I had.

What’s with the thumbs down on this video!? Shows you everything you need to do the job and exactly what to do. Thank you for the video! I already knew what to do but just wanted to double check before I did it😂
When should you add grease to the boots? Should they remain dry until the reinstall is completed and torqued, then filled? Or should I add just a little before the install.
+Kim Greeley - CDPHE Thanks for watching! The ball joint in this video is pregreased and sealed, so you do not need to add any grease. If it has a grease fitting then you will want to add the grease prior to installation!
Always check for grease even if you think there's some in there! I just purchased some Precision brand control arms and there was hardly any grease. There was none in the boot just some wiped around the joint. Ironically same thing happened to some boots that a big auto repair business installed for me. I can't totally blame the auto repair store because the factory put the grease in but they should have checked.
I just want to know how to adjust upper control arms
how do yu know whats the right height before you tightened the bolts of the control arm?
He covers this @ 7:10. Another jack has to be positioned under the lower ball joint, then lower the primary jack. I recommend keeping some tension on the primary jack as a backup in case the one under the ball joint slips.
+Hctibeyb Thanks for the feedback!
@@SerenoOunce ride height! not right height
RIDE height not right height
Easiest way to set the ride height is to measure from the center of the axle up to the fender wheel well before you start the job while the wheel is on the ground. Then when you are ready to tighten the control arms bolts, use a jack to raise the hub assembly to the ride height by again measuring from the axle center to the fender.
I’m trying to install the new control arm, but the left side bushing (towards the front of the truck) will not slide back into the housing to be bolted up.
+Jimmy E. You may need to loosen other suspension parts up to get the bolt to line-up correctly. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
Show how u pressed it through I don't know how
So, explain how you got the correct ride height to make sure the arms are in a neutral position before torqueing them.
Just Jack it up, so you can put some load on the suspension. Then torque the bolts. There’s no exact ride height. That’s the only reason he jacked the BCA. To put a load on the TCA bolts.
my chilton manual says to snug up but dont torque the control arm bolts, put the tires back on, lower the vehicle to the floor and then torque the bolts. I have a 2wd.
Love the videos, only complaint is the parts list and video don't match up with the socket sizes
I found out a sledgehammer works well.
Where is your guy’s video for the lower control arms?
+Yetti Dangerous We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Is this a 4x4? The control arms are different on a 2wd.
Yes, there was a CV axle in the disassembly process. Indicating that this is a 4x4 model.
Way this truck dos not have coil suspension only shocks
4 wheel drive. It has torsion bars instead of coil springs for the front independent suspension. My truck is the same way.
Actually, my buddy's Plymouth from the 60s has the same basic design up front. Though, that's without 4 wheel drive.
Where is the suspension spring
ITs a torsion bar suspension. No spring.

Your auto parts are junk!!! I bought ball joint for me f150 and they went out in a month
