06:50 Love the shock method tip - haven't tried that yet.
I very much enjoy these videos because they are very explanatory. Thanks for the help.
+Brooks Ashbrook Thanks for checking us out. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
One tip for you, leave the caliper on and drop an extension in the edge of your rotor, it will fit right in the vent holes and jam against the calliper bracket locking the rotation, you can take it out and rotate it and put it back in as needed.
+Matt's Garage Thanks for the feedback!
I love these videos saved me 100s. I'm a pro at wheel bearings and upper control arms now lol
+Jeremiah Fisher Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
Nice job! Another option is to remove the sway bar link, rather than breaking loose the ball joint.
I'm going to go ahead and make a comment, but first I'm going to go ahead and change out the CV axel. Then I'm going to go ahead and finish with a comment. Let go ahead and finish this project. Thx for letting me go ahead and thank you.
Very informative and helped me while I fix my snapped axle

Thank you.....appreciate this as it's very detailed.
Great video. The upper control arm ball joint can be tough to remove. Rapping it with a hammer might work for older styles but with my 2003 Ford Expedition, nothing worked. The joint is fused onto the control arm and this makes removal exceedingly difficult.
I ended up having to take a grinder to the bolt from the upper ball joint to get it loose from the knuckle. Pain in the butt, but that’s what it took.
If you are just putting a replacement CV boot on and reusing the axle use a brass hammer or a dead blow hammer with a plastic or rubber head on it. That way you don't damage the end of the axle or the threads on it when you are driving it out of the hub.
Fantastic video, and your parts service rocks!
+HP Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
nice video, yall should do a remove and replace of the lower control arm
and maybe a remove and replace of the steering Gear box
Great job.
I will definitely be using this thank u
Awesome video 💯💯💯
Great Job on the video
+David Ford Thanks for watching! 1aauto.com
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME DOING THIS. I have a 1999 Ford F-150. I'm going to replace both my cv axle and my wheel bearing and hub assembly. When is best to release the control arm so that i dont screw myself over? Before removing the hub assembly or after?
I noticed toward the end you had a new hub assembly installed but you never mentioned replacing it. You also did not mention how to inspect it, when to replace it or even if replacing the hub assy at the same time as the axle shafts was a good preventive maintenance idea.
They did it to make multiple how to videos without having to tear the truck apart 3-5 times.
Great video. One question. I broke my driver side lower ball joint and the cv joint pulled the axle shaft from within the differential. I'm guessing that the c-clip broke when the truck sat down on the control arm causing the the shaft to come out with the cv joint. I've tried to research the net for info on fixing it with no luck and I'm wondering if it's fixable? I've never done my own work on the diff before and I'm kinda lost. Thanks.
Very informative and to the point! Thanks man
+Danny Beach Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers needs to make this repair, we carry the auto repair part shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them www.1aauto.com/cv-axle-shaft/i/1aacv00147?RUclips&CTA+Comment&QxSzWM
What type of grease would you recommend for the spline?
Great vid. I'm doing my right side now. I was able to save some steps by just removing the sway bar link. Came right out and went back in good. I was looking to see if I needed to put locktite on the 6 bolts. Do I need to apply it?
+Wyatt's dad Thanks for watching! No, you do not need to apply loctite to those bolts, just torque them to spec! www.1aauto.com/cv-axle-shaft/i/1aacv00147?RUclips&CTA+Comment&QxSzWM
Wyatt's dad never
Never thought I’d benefit from my broken sway bars!
So you didn't have to separate the upper ball joint when you took out the sway bar link..?Plus,I'm replacing the wheel bearing too..Should give a little more play..
Is there a seal between the axle with the 6 bolts and the differential? If so, what is it called. Mine seems to be leaking there.
When I went to change out front CV joints the 13 mm 12-point were strippeded. Question 1 what is the best way to get them out question to where can I buy replacements?
I just bought an 03' F-150, noticed that there's a 'squeaky u-joint" sound coming from front right- would that be the CV joints, or the drive shaft to the front wheels for the 4wd?
I'm glad I did this video step by step instead of using my own brain and loosening the f****** 612 mm bullets first because they're in Nightmare and you don't need a pry bar if you're do it first thanks for a waste of time
Never used a fork unless you are replacing the ball joint..9 times out of 10 you will damage the rubber both the holds the grease and it protects it from the elements
Must be nice to able to do this using only hand tools up here in the Chicago area you cant even get stuff off with air tools and if you get a breaker bar and a cheater bar over it itll break the bolt
Why when I installed my new axles the axles wont spin?
Thanks for the video. Is it necessary or optional to grease the splines of the new cv axle shaft? I changed the passenger side a couple months ago and now realized I have to also do the driver's side, but did not grease the splines on the last one (just slid the splines into the hub dry). Should that be of any concern?
+James Palen Thanks for watching! You do want to apply some grease to the new splines when installing the new part. If you don't it won't result in catastrophic failure, but it is not a step you want to skip necessarily! 1aauto.com
I recently just hit my tire and bent my axel. Can it be fixed, the tire is not moving
Do I have to have the front end aligned after I need to know I am replacing drivers side Adel in the morning
+Joshua Roberts Thanks for watching! No you do not need to have the front end aligned for this job. 1aauto.com
Wow, no swearing…. Impressive 😅
I followed this video excatly and replaced my uper and lower ball joints as well ... now my truck shudders at 40mph ..what did I do wrong
Question, what is the part called which is labeled 21 in yellow? The cv axle bolts to it. This part popped out of our 99 Expedition 4x4 5.4, and I'm having a hard time find the name of it? I'm thinking the snap ring/retainer clip failed and needs to be replaced?
+brickwal92tt Thanks for watching! That is the inner shaft, sometimes referred to as a "stub shaft." Unfortunately we do not carry that part, but we do carry the CV axle shown in the video! Here is a link to the part if you need to purchase it: www.1aauto.com/cv-axle-shaft/i/1aacv00147?RUclips&CTA+Comment&QxSzWM
What was the customer complaint?
4:59 "Once you take off your caliper, your rotor will slip right off".
Uhh huh... on a 1997 - 2003 4WD F150... Maybe when it was one year old.
+Tony Spenard Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Yeah really these trucks especially up in Chicago are very rusty
thoses 6 bolts the plate has movement on that transfer case up and down. is that normal? I want say 1/4 to 3/8 movement Thanks
+Jacqueline Heaton Have you torqued them to the correct specs?
Wouldn’t it be much easier to loosen the drive axle hub nut and the and the drive axle flange bolts while the truck is on the ground? No need to hold the axle from spinning if it’s still on the ground. Then lift the truck and do the rest of the repair.
+Jay Burris Thanks for the feedback!
My 2002 took a 36 mm socket.
How do you know which axle you need to replace?
Could you let me know soon because I have to work on mine
Large c clamp confuses me. What’s the minimum inches that the clamp has to be?
Anybody know if both sides are the same axle or if they're specific to each side?
+Mr_ Misters_ Thanks for watching! They are the same for both sides for this application.
@@1AAuto thank you
what is the part the axle bolts connect to?
should be the front differential
Man if would be cool to do it with out having to remove everything 🤔 I wonder if I can turn the wheel all the way to the left I can probably be able to pull it out and in
Lol, nope.
I can definitely confirm that it's not possible to remove the CV axle without AT LEAST separating the upper control arm from the steering knuckle. Some people say that you can just remove the sway bar link, but even if that's the case, you'll need a brand-new nylon lock nut when putting it back on.
What are the symptoms of a bad axle?
+Daryl G. "Clicking" Noises When Turning.
A Knocking Sound. ...
Grease on the Inside or Edge of the Tires. The CV axle joint has boots that contain grease while the axle spins, keeping it from leaking. ...
Vibration While Driving.
Took a 35mm off and new one was 36mm
You can't pull that CV axel out without messing with the upper balljoint?
enter backspace you can. Remove sway bar link instead
By the book, no, real life, yes
What are the signs of a bad axle while driving?
+d sayles One of the most common and most noticeable symptoms of a bad or failing CV axle shaft assembly is an audible clicking noise when turning or vibrations.
I get a vibration when I accelerate between 45 to 60mph for about 5 seconds. Could that be the axle
Can you just remove the front axles and make it 2wd ?
A little late but yes you can, you can also remove rear drive shaft, put it in 4 wheel drive high and it will be a front wheel drive truck,.
Hi
Fermin Gomez
does this fit a 2 wheel drive 02 f-150 or only 4 wheel?
+LivingLikeJudah The 2WD model does not have front axles. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Haaaa...you clearly need to not be attempting your own suspension work. Good lord.
I have a 2003 ford f150 4x4 5.4l super cab I went and measured my CV shafts up front and one side is longer than the other one is that normal?
Depending on the vehicle, one side may be longer than the other and it should not be an issue. Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com +Ryan Malon
Put about $200.00 in new parts and then put a used cotter pin back in?
so tired of seeing how to videos showing no rust, must be down south, come to the upper midwest were everything is rusted and won't come apart like you show.
Just don't use Chineseum axles. They're garbage.
Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com +1rewd1
