  • Wearing my Citizen Promaster Satellite GPS Diver CC5001-00W, I discuss the watch obsession the the context of the 1976 movie Network, the 1998 movie The Truman Show and the rise and fall of social media star The Liver King.

I probably wouldn’t be as obsessed with watches if I didn’t watch RUclips. Just got a Citizen Tsuyosa small seconds blue dial today. It became the 83rd watch in my collection. Halp!

Jeff, I spent 3 years in rural Idaho and my watch obsession came to a screeching halt. I was content with my Seiko turtle and my Omega Seamaster. I had to move to the East Coast for work and my watch obsession came back with a vengeance. I think it is linked to modernity, metropolitan areas and the consumerism/boredom that comes with those areas.

If the horrible happened and someone broke in and stole all your watches, and all you had left was the watch on your wrist… would you be relieved? Maybe happy to obtain a new collection? Maybe you become a one watch man?

I get really excited about a watch, usually go into a dealer to try it on, end up buying it, then look for video reviews. I invariably go for the contrarian, under-the-radar picks, so there’s little content on them. Wish there were more for validation purposes.

Had one watch for 25 yrs, s Tag diver (which went diving) miss those days. Fed up with endless searching. Need to end this. Currently have one for every day of the week. Had three for a while, that was good. Your idea of 2, the Um and 143 sounds good.

I watched all of them as they came out. I could certainly relate. Thank you for your story :)

As a person who strongly dislikes writing essays, I still think that it is valuable to learn. The thought process of organizing an essay is an important skill that can be used for making arguments and proposals.

McMahon! Have you thought about getting into watchmaking? You can make your dream Seiko/s all the while going down the rabbit hole of watchmaking tools. I feel like you would really love it. Imagine wearing your favorite watch and knowing you made it. I recently took the leap and starting my first watch this week 💪🤘

You're correct, Jeff. I'm currently loving the ID Guy and Watchcrunch videos featuring the Seiko SJE093. Man, what a watch. I really don't need a watch, but I love the idea of owning it.

My SJE is helping me trim down my collection in a big way, my AD got a very significant limited edition number that I surmised was meant for me so I went for it, it is so good on the original tropic strap, and it compliments my snowflake perfectly, I can’t recommend it enough, even though the 055 haunts my dreams mostly due to seeing Jeff’s 055 on that orange tropic strap about a year ago ago.

exit watch was great! I see it as a spirited on-stage musical. I'm buying a SBBN049 tomorrow. getting it imported from japan. I bought a solar tuna last week. I'm sure this will quench the thirst, right?

I been a prisoner hell the door to my jail cell has been open a few times and been able to walk away yet I go back to watch prison willingly…. Even when I was growing up no social media I would look at sears catalogue and other magazines for watches…. I did try to change my ways when I had serious financial things happen…. Yet I went back to jail cell a prisoner to watches 😅😢 Mr McMahon your videos give me a good feeling knowing I ain’t the only one regardless of owning some watches that would make most content and happy and stop buying….

I definitely think that if I didn’t watch RUclips my watch addiction would be much less dramatic. I say this because years ago when I started wearing watches again I was super into citizen watches, but literally just had one and eventually I obtained a few others as a gifts. But I wore that first watch so much through a few different straps that wore out and I didn’t really think about other watches or research them much at all. It was just a comfortable watch that had to go everywhere with me. It was for a time, a one and done. I was a watch normie. Sometime during 2020 I was watching pocket knife review videos which some of those guys cross over to watches and vise versa. Ended up watching some watch videos and the nostalgia, the history, the looks of some watches all drew me in and it hasn’t slowed down much since. I think it’s all ok as long as I can keep it all within reason.

In my case social media is feeding the craving for more watches. Thanks for sharing your insights Mr. MacMahon. It is helping me keeping it real and searching the mythical exit watch. At he same seriously questions if it really exists. Warm regards. Btw looking forward to part 7 of the story

People don't write essays anymore, they record them on camera and broadcast on social media.
So I've owned my SLA023 for exactly a week now and have paused my rotation. But that hasn't stopped me from thinking about buying a Seiko solar diver to replace the beater I keep in my desk drawer at work. Here's my twisted rationale; I'm getting slightly fed up with winding my work beater at the start of the week.
Here's my even more twisted rationale for not leaving one of the G-Shocks I already own in my desk drawer; they don't receive the Atomic Clock signal, overnight in the office. 😬

So to answer the question regarding my watch addiction and whether its fueled by social media.
Let me begin by saying I feel like some of my other interests and hobbies (automobiles, firearms) are becoming less socially acceptable, whereas horology seems to be relatively safe, for now. When I browse watch content at work, it doesn't really offend anyone and I can even go as far as to rationalize that it's work-related.
I haven't been on "conventional" social media since 2015, but I am on YouYube and I do lurk forums. I would be dishonest if I didn't admit that those mediums affect me. I have one other, longer-term watch enthusiast coworker and we have nearly successfully converted another. The point of that being, not many people I know share this hobby/addiction, so I admittedly end up seeking it on the Internet.
That said, I do refrain from going to real life meet ups, which I fear would only exacerbate the situation by being physically surrounded by other enablers. It was a lesson I learned from the days when I belonged to a local car club. 😅

McMahon, I enjoyed "Exit Watch", and think it was a fun time.
I'm still at 5 watches, and am quite content. I've gotten a pile of new straps in for my Omega Seamaster 300M, ranging from new NATOs, MN straps, Paratrooper straps, and some new rubber (scuba style) to try out. You'd discussed that every watch is like 7 with how the strap changes work, and I do agree with that.
I also agree about exercise being free therapy. After our move, my GF and I finally had a day where we could get back into our gym regiment. Hitting arms this morning (G-Shock on the wrist) was a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of moving.
Thank you for the video today! Always looking forward to your uploads!

Please don't stop doing watch reviews, they are not really watch reviews as you know. I like the stream of conscious style. Continue with the Exit Watch series - a little verbose, but you obviously love the language.
