One trick I tried was using watered down brown or gray shades of acrylic paint in lieu of stain. I wanted to create a similar project but didn't want to buy a big can of staining stuff, since it was a one-time project. It worked surprisingly well. 🙂

Hi thank you so much for this video!! I have been making signs for about a year but all of a sudden this week I have been having the worst luck with everything possible going wrong with my signs I just want to give up! This video is making me want to keep trying! I have some questions about spray painting and vinyl peeling up paint and even my stain! Is there a way I can message you to see if you have any suggestions or do I just comment on here! Thank you for taking the time to read this!
Hi i really enjoyed your Tutorial. Would love some wooden signs for our Garden. What printer do you use? This year has been terrible with Covid. I hope you and your family ard well. What material is your Stencil made of?? J see that you are unable to reuse the Stencil. We bought one of these with the Red Truck and Tree in the back, it says our surname and i wanted the year we were married. Merry Christmas to you all. Love from a Wife. Mum and Nana x
So you did make your own stencils with the machine- I see it at Walmart for $275. Is it easy to use? How did you figure out the stencil vinyl material. It's so new to me but want to try this! Love your sign!!
Thank you for watching Maura! The brush I am using in the video is an Annie Sloan Chalk Paint brush :) you can get them online or check their website to see if there are any Annie Sloan sellers in your area.
Using this method, it's expected to have some paint lift with the stencil. It adds a very natural looking distressing. The paint lifting with the stencil is what everyone has loved about this sign. Hope this helps!
Hey thanks for the video! Quick question though, can you show how you placed the stencil? Ive never seen anyone place painters tape down on the bottom like that. Did you just remove it as you laid it down? Im assuming it was for tension? Also what about framing? How would i go about doing that?
I have a tutorial for framing on my website.. I will add more tutorials later! woodsongaleinteriors.com/category/sign-makers/ Also, I used the "hinge method" to lay my stencil. Look it up on youtube! its super simple and makes laying your stencil stress free!
Great video! How long do you wait for the stencil to dry before you sand over it? Is it dried completely? I've never distressed with the stencil on, but I'm going to try!
Hey Tammy! I did wait for the stencil to dry before distressing. Chalk type paint dries fast.. so it was only a few minutes. If you can run your finger over the paint and not get any residue on your finger you are good to distress! Great question!
I bought this file off of Etsy but the particular shop doesn't have this file anymore I don't think. But I'm sure if you search for middle how farm svg you can find it or some thing similar.
I purchased off of Etsy. I don't think this design is avaible from the same seller as the one I bought from, but if you search "mistletoe farm Christmas trees svg" you may can find it.
What do I do if a stencil "bled" underneath. It does not have the sharp crisp lines. How do I distress my sign with it having out of the lines lettering and make it still look good?
Hey Stacy, I am sorry I am just now seeing this! Bleeding can be avoided for sure. What I normally do to avoid bleeding is, make sure your work piece is sanded smooth. After I place my stencil I use a clear sealant spray such as rustoleum clear matte spray and spray it all over the stencil. The clear spray seals little cracks. after it is dry, go in with your desired color. 9 times out of 10 works for me! I will have an occasional bleed but if that happens I usually take my xatco knife and scrape the bleed away.
It's so dark in there. Too much chatting. Lot of scenes could be cut out/sped up. But you will get better with time. Some videos show painting the board black underneath before using chalk paint on top - yours show using a stain. Interesting. Is there another way to make the words without using Silhoutte Cameo or this Cricut? Not everyone can afford those machines. Besides, It'd be more authentic if everything was handwritten and drawn yourself (that's what I'm teaching myself to do.)

Yes, I use Oracle 631 everyday but for this particular look, I wanted the paint to peel up with the stencil :)
I just wondered if the spray paint you used would be suitable for an outdoor sign? Or would you varnish after for outdoor use? Thanks so much! Xx
