Now I understand how was my grandma feeling when I taught her how to use her new iPhone
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tab 2, page 4: "Release without lens". When you shoot with an old manual lens with simple adapter, and there is no electronic communication from lens to body, you MUST have this setting enabled. That is, in this situation the camera thinks that there is no lens attached, and it won't shoot unless this setting is enabled.
1d
also the e-shutter makes less light in than mechanical
Good to know! Thank you.
I shoot a lot with Legacy lenses and this is an important parameter to change....
I shoot with old lenses and also with adapters, some do not communicate with the camera so this function is essential.
Finally a video by someone who either speaks well, or spends the time to remove the irritating filler words, (ah, you know, actually). You deserve to have the many viewers because you care enough to put out a quality presentation.
The one thing I wish you would have covered is how to connect to your computer using wi-fi.
Camera brands MUST pay you to ship their cameras with your user guide videos (Maybe a QR code?), this is way better than going through the ones that come with the camera.
I know this video is old but there's one important correction for the people looking to customize this (still) popular camera:
Long Exposure NR *does* affect RAW files. It doesn't work like other forms of noise reduction where they only apply to JPEGs. Basically, if you take a long exposure (say, 30 seconds) then some pixels may get "hot" and display as bright red or other colors. Long Exposure NR counteracts this by immediately taking an equal length, dark (shutter curtain down) exposure after your initial/real exposure. It then detects these hot pixels in the otherwise black exposure and references their location to then subtract the hot pixels from your initial exposure. This way, the camera knows that it is removing a hot pixel rather than, say, stars in a night sky.
The benefit is that your final image has faulty, bright pixels removed. It can drastically improve the quality of a long exposure photo. The downside is that your exposure takes twice as long to finish.
Every time I learn something new about my camera, I feel as if I have a new camera, but really it's a new me and better photographer. Thank Fro Bro 👁🙏👁
I am using it for over a week now and I LOVE IT! I was shooting with Canon 6D, and bought this one. For the first 3 days it was really awkward, but after I use it for one week I tried the Canon 6D again and I felt light I am using some ancient piece of camera. The A7 feel super intuitive after I spend 3 or 4 hours of learning the Menu and the way it works. I absolutely love it!
me too. I have 2x Canon 6Ds. a few days with the a7iii (only taking practice shots before my first pro job with it on Saturday), and the 6D seems like an slug-like thing from yester-decade.. the a7iii basically has night vision and the AF is amazing....i think i may have to sell all my Canon gear, get a second A7iii and another lens to be honest! the f2.8 24-70 GM is great so far..
Same here and totally agree. I also tested out the very inexpensive 24-240mm Sony lens for travel. I have G lenses too but I was blown away by this lens simply used on full auto for fast shooting on a vacation. Amazing quality. Just the a7iii and one all-purpose lens ... holiday heaven for me.
I was at our local camera shop with my son and I was asking about the trade-in value of my 6D when my son asked what camera I would trade it in on. I said the Sony a7III.. He said "Father's day is coming up and I want you to have the camera you want"... so he bought it for me on the spot. Goodbye to my 6D and hello to a shiny new a7III. This video helped me to set it up and I have to say it's a phenomenal camera!!
Ok Jared. I just bought my A7R III upgrading from my trusty old 5D Mark II and 7D. I've watched in total 8 Videos on the A7R3 some of which were actually in excess of an hour and I must say by far this is the BEST and MOST INFORMATIVE video. And to think it's only 34 mins. Thanks for this mate.
7:54 "there are 38000 pages" - I laughed so hard
Sony adicto I agree. i switched from Canon (40 years a pro SLR and DSLR user) to Sony in January 2017, and happy I did. Coming from Nikon and Canon there is small learning curve but once you set up your menu and custom buttons and functions you can pretty much forget the menu. It is all well worth it for the features and image quality of these cameras. Their menus are bigger because the cameras do more, simple as that. Cheers. BTW I own A6500, A7RIII and new A7III and love them for my professional and personal use.
Good work. Quick and to the point. A perfect primer to get me started after being used to Canon FF. I am sure I can step off into more advanced and personal settings once I become more familiar with the Sony way of doing things.
I actually don't agree with people who say that menu system is complicated. Until I got my A7 III, I thought there are literally hundreds of pages. When I had Nikon D7100, I hated everything about it (including menus and controls) and completely lost my enthuziasm to pick up the camera. Sony, on the other hand, makes me want to shoot whenever I have a spare minute. And it feels like a gadget in a way, which is very appealing to me. My Nikon had to go but Sony definitely stays.
Roman Fierce I agree. Nikon has a garbage menu system. I could never find anything I needed quickly on my D750. The Sony is much easier.
Just try Fuji and you will know what good user interface is...
Kearress lol Fuji has a bad menu system too! I owned a X-T2. But better than Nikon. On the plus side, most new cameras have a My Menu or My Favourites shortcut so you don't need to keep diving into the menu!
The Sony menu is extensive but logical unlike the Fuji or Nikon menu!
Agree .. Sony has the best menu system which is logical and easy to follow
Yasser Saeed I see your sarcasm :) There is a custom menu where one can put his own logic into it. I use it all the time. Love it.
This was so helpful. I actually ended up putting RAW on slot 1 and JPG on slot 2. I do big shoots and loading the RAWs onto the computer is time consuming. We review the JPGs to decide which ws to open. It'll be nice to only have to load jpgs while reviewing shoots.
Jared Polín makes the most reasonable camera videos on RUclips. This guy really deserves a TV show. Make him famous RUclips!!!
In the video you skipped the ISO Auto Min SS setting. 3 years ago when I bought the camera and watched this video, this is how I learned the settings. Today I discovered ISO Auto Min. SS setting. You could have saved me this 3 years :D
Thank You. Just bought this camera, used. The camera was too complicated for previous owner. If they had seen this, maybe I wouldn't have got a good deal.
Just received my A7iii yesterday. I love it so far!! Thank you Jared Polin for this User's Guide. There are tons of settings!
AT 12:50 SWT V/H af area is actually pretty cool. I turn it on and it let's you have independent focus areas for portrait and landscape orientation and it will switch automatically when using flexible spot focus so you don't have to keep joysticking back and forth.
Release without lens is essential when using adaptors that are not transferring EXIF data, ie cheap adaptor or vintage lenses. Most A7iii users will probably only use fully compatible A/F lenses but if you have other-make lenses an adaptor can greatly enhance enjoyment of a mirrorless camera.
I watched a Sony a7iii user's guide video by a renowned photographer. He spoke too fast and used fancy terms I didn't understand. It made me feel overwhelmed and hopeless. Then, I watched yours, and I felt like it makes sense. Thank you!
Just purchased a7iii... from Canon 7d to Sony. Picked up Sigma MC-11 converter and can now use Canon/Sigma/Tamron lenses! They are not perfect, some Sony 'features' are not available, but I primarily shot photos and LOVE it. Yes, there are a lot of settings... a lot you can customize... but, I plan on using this camera for many years to come, so I have time!! Plus will probably take a year to pay off! HA Just one more statement... took no time at all to start taking some fun and amazing pics. Low light blows away my 7d... eons ahead... so fun!
Thank you!!! I just set up my camera first time back in photography In 8 yrs. I will be watching your videos on how to
Thank you! Just ordered the a7III - these steps were very easy to follow and start with. Who needs hours of detailed explanations from other Sony experts that make no sense or put you to sleep?
FYI It is Flexible Spot Medium with the M. There is a S and L option if you go left or right that changes the size of your flexible spot. Great Video!
Thank you ! Watched it twice, followed along with my new A7iii that I purchased after your real world review... saved me a ton of time as I’m new to higher end cameras. I watch every video and listen to raw talk and the daily fro every day... thank you again for all your hard work! You’ve educated and inspired me...
I just found Jared, what is raw talk and fro everyday? Where do I find this?
I am a professional photographer, just upgraded to this camera, super excited! my friend sent me this video to watch to make sure I get everything set up right and I am 16 minutes into this video literally CRACKING up at Jared's comments. The part where he comments on sony "shortening" the "Face Prty in Mlti Mtr" YALL I AM HOLLERING. tears in my eyes. 20/10 video and I am not even done yet.
The 'Reg Cust Shoot Set' and 'Recall Custom hold' are very useful. You should look into it.
thank you very much for this I just purchased an a7iii and made the jump from Canon today... I was lost until I watched this.
The port next to the USB3 port is actually not a "video" port of sorts but it's labelled (as written next to it!) as "multi" port and yes, it also charges. Which is great as Sony themselves include...yes...an older fashioned micro usb cable to charge the camera.
Great all around basic video. Just what I needed after leaving Canon and coming to Sony. Keep up the great work Jared! Its appreciated.
16:22 Exposure standard adjustment is useful if you want to always slightly over expose images to get more shadow detail. You can always add black, but you can’t add white.
I really appreciate this video. I still struggle at times getting my camera to do what I know it can do... your video is my goto reference.
If there was ever a RUclips video I found, watched the whole thing, was very informative, and actually had helpful information; this would be it.
Very helpful, I switched from a lifetime of canon to Sony A7 111 and have struggled from the word go.
I enjoy your videos
I am going to purchase this camera even if I can't really afford it.
3 weeks ago I bought me the Sony A7III and I found the manual so boring that I never read it and finally you explained me a bit the camera, thanks for that. But now I need to now how to make real awesome photos.
Hey Jared, thanks for this. Just got my a7iii and this guide is very helpful.
10/14 spot metering point. Sony finally made it possible to meter where your actual focus point is, and not just dead center of the image plane. I bought one just today and it was the first thing I went and turned on. God I missed this feature.
i just jump to full-frame and this video help me to set up my first full-frame mirrorless coming from canon t5i to Sony a7iii.
Thanks for this Jared, been struggling since I got mine. This is so helpful!
Even though I just bought myself an A7R II this video was still VERY helpful as A LOT of the menu and settings are VERY similar or even the SAME! This is my first really good camera and my first mirrorless as I had been using my mom's Nikon D90 before this and just recently scraped up enough money to buy myself this new used camera and used lens (both of MPB) and the menu was SUPER initimidating! (An it wasn't even as big as the III).I really appreciate your recommendation on what you changed and what you kept the same so now I'm thinking I'm gonna go back through and re-arrange some things! I super appreciate all of your help with the photography community!
swapped all my canon gear for the A7iii body and got a deal on a 24-105, this vid has been helpful and the menu system is not as daunting as the interweb would have you believe.
Thanks for this Jared! My a7iii finally arrived and this walkthrough helped. The menu layout is not too different from the a6000, so that's nice that there's some consistency between models. You did a great job explaining what you change and why. The why is the most important part for my purposes. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
By the way, I listened to your pod about RUclips and your channel. This is a good example of a longer video that I watched all the way through. You kept the segments short and to the point, which will keep the folks with short attention spans watching. Just my .02 thanks
Jared: Don't know why release w/o lens is on...
Also Jared: Let's record the sony's 10fps with the sensor exposed for educational purposes!
Love the work my dude
Moved from years of using different Canon (even a panasonic), to a Sony a7iii. Felt very lost. This was a major help. Thanks! 🙏
Purchased my first mirrorless last week. The video really helps. Love from India
just got my A73. Thanks for this video, helped a lot. I'm mostly a Canon guy but I also have a Nikon D810.
I leaving my A6400 to A7iii. Your videos are always informative. Will check out your website...Thanks
Brilliant Video, Ty I think the release without lens is for allowing one to take images when a totally manual lens adaptor is fitted for M42 threaded lens or manual focus nikons etc.
On spot metering center option. You missed a critical feature. You can set it to spot metering follow. Its an incredible fearure
How?
@@ianplaysbass depends on the camera
1. Sony sports metering in a7 and a6000 newer series has two options
A. Center metering in a small medium center spot area
B. Spot metering follows your focus point so that light is metered off the focus point
FYI, being able to take an exposure with no lens attached to the camera is important function in Astrophotography using Eyepiece Projection with a telescope.
If you don't have 24p on the a7iii, go to the toolbox-menue(2/7) and change it by tapping on the "NTSC/PAL Selector". TAKE OUT SD-CARDS IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING ON THEM!
Thanks for the guide Jared
Had this camera a while but never gotten to grips with the confusing menu system so thanks for this. So many buried nuggets of functionality.
USB - C and Micro USB not USB 3 and old video port
Micro HDMI
Excellent job. I’m moving from Nikon to Sony. So this is exactly what I need.
This is my second time watching this because I am still learning this darn camera. lol Again, great job.
"FRO" really does know photo. I just acquired this camera and having learned so much from your commentary in other videos re Nikon and fundamentals, I was happy to find that you cover this equipment as well. I appreciate the effort you put into covering the useful information that we, your loyal viewers can rely on consistently.
😂we have camera exam tomorrow God bless you best explanation everrrr
Mahalo Jared....4 years later....still a valuable camera...Mele Kalikimaka and Makahiki hou....
I just purchased the Sony a7iii and appreciate the complete walk through. Very helpful!
Thank you. I’ve had the A7iii for 6 months.... and I basically just use it on AUTO. But sometimes I hit a brick wall... and the menu system is so comprehensive (and therefore requires a high level of knowledge) that I end up stymied.
I absolutely have to learn how to use the A7iii manually. I have to know what I’m doing. (The priority for me is the artistic result, the final photo.... not the tech aspects.... but I really have to know something of what I’m doing for the times I hit the Big Brick Wall).
Your video was PERFECT as an introduction. Just PERFECT.
Brisk, business-like, focussed.... exactly what I needed.
The journey of a 1000 miles... etc, etc.
This was my first step. MANY THANKS.
You are subscribed.
DMF= Direct Manual Focus. Allows you to manually focus after autofocusing.
THANK YOU
Also reliable videos when it comes to setting up my camera!
Thank you. I just received my camera today. Now I have a great starting point. Your videos on Sony convinced me to purchase the A7III.
Man you just dont know how much you have helped me with this video i got my A7iii coming soon, and now i know how to set it up and how to make changes and also customize to my liking, Great Video as always. Thanks Bro!
Just bought a Sony a7iii...this video tutorial helps loads thankyou.
I've had a drone for a couple of years but thought I'd treat myself to a half decent camera. I'll see how I get on with it. 😃👍🏻📷
You had a hard job for new beginner who is with Sony. I just got A7C but it's hard to set or use this new one. I learned a lot of this function. Thank you Jared!!
I've been a Canon user for 23 years -- who I have become increasingly more disappointed with over the years. I'm currently selling all my Canon gear and have a Sony a7iii (and lenses + accessories) due for delivery this week. This was a helpful video to get familiar with this UI. Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to clearly explain *everything (most things). ;)
22:30 Release without Lens is when you have a vintage Lens mounted which has no digital connection to your camera
Santosi yep I was going to mention that. I have an old FD mount canon 50mm 1.4 manual focus lens that belonged to my grandpa that I still use.
Robert Greene I have that same lens! It awesome 😎
love using old canon FD lenses on my Sony bodies. ESPECIALLY the 50mm since i cant afford the L series and anything else is just so slowwwww (f4 and up)
Thanks so much. Just picked this up tonight and was pretty lost!
I hoping to buy this exact camera this week. Thanks so much for the helpful guide
At set priority AF is the ability to register a persons face that when selected the camera will focus first on the face you registered.
Thanks Jared! I'm late to the game - just picked up my a7iii yesterday - but I really appreciate the hand holding.
Thanks bro!
By far the best guide for beginners like me, this is by far the best guide video I’ve seen for this camera !
Never cut your hair !
Just bought a used one today.. so incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Thanks Jared, I could see you were nearly falling asleep due to its simplicity to you but you've helped a lot of people. This is my first camera (with the sigma 24-70mm 2.8 art). I now feel less intimidated by those menus and know where to find things, without reading the manual.
This is one of the most helpful videos for getting started with Sony Aiii 7. Thank you for making it. I plan on signing up for your course. Since I have been away from the photography world for a long time. Thanks Again!
This was super helpful since I recently upgraded to this from a 5Dii. Thanks!
Excellent video. Thank you. I just received my a7 iii yesterday, and I am enjoying it very much!
Thanks for this, man. It clears a lot of the physical aspect and interface of the camera . Even, for those of us that don't own it, yet.
I've been considering the A7III more seriously, lately.
The Fuji X-H1 has failed to convince me..ergonomically.. and Nikon's FF mirrorless is one year away... and we dont know if its gonna feature IBIS.. or even how the body will physically be like.
As soon as i can get my hands on one of these.. and get a feel of its ergonomics.. i'll make a decision.
The video gives us a better look into what it will be like, using a Sony A7III body.
PS: and yes.. hehehe.. it helps ppl that already own it.. too :P
The Menus are bad.. but not as BAD.. as they are known to being, imo. And i am not much into Sony, to be honest.
My 1dx pooped itself last year so I've been taking a creative hiatus. Just got my a7iii, still in the box, super excited
Just rented this for a week - what a menu system nightmare!!! But, your video helped a lot to explain the madness, so thanks.
Thank you so much Jared! I bought this camera the other day. I’m a Nikon shooter but I’ve heard so much about Sony A7 and the picture quality and the focus system I bought it! I hate the menu! It’s a turn off big time. Ridiculous and unnecessary junk stuff. But... the autofocus options and behaviour of the camera is impressive. The bokeh is nice. The lenses are great. So I will keep it for the time being. I hope it is the camera of my dreams. I played with it last night and the focus system seems very reliable. The menu is a put off though. I’ve left it as you recommended. I’ll just tweek the obvious items. Thanks for this helpful guide! I just couldn’t cope with the Sony menu!
Thanks alot for sharing you make it way easier to figure out what's going on in theses cameras my wife and I thank you
This was by far the most helpful guide that I’ve seen on the A7iii. Thank you!
Hi Jared, I'm so glad I found this video. I just bought this camera on Saturday. I'm an amateur/hobby newborn photographer. I am investing in my future as a photographer and I went from a Canon Rebel XSI crop sensor camera that was bought used to the Sony a7 lll. I wanted a full frame camera because I was about ready to give up with cameras and just go back to using my S20 ultra cell phone only. I found exactly what I needed with this video. I will be watching a lot of your videos. On to the next one now. Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for this Jared! I just picked up the A7III and this helped get the initial settings ready to go. Also, I've never commented before but have been following for a while now. Thank you for all the information you put out to the photography world!
Very handy thanks....makes it easier for me when I eventually buy the camera!
Jared, this may have been a tedious video for you to record but it was incredibly helpful. Thanks.
Best user guide i could find after buying this camera two days ago! Thanks a lot
Thank you! Very helpful...wish you would make these videos for all the electronics I have to deal with!
Mine is ordered and I'm excited for my first full frame camera since I shot with 35 mm black and white. The a6000 that I'm currently using, will move to a backup. Thanks for all your videos. You are fun to watch and very informative.
This was a huge help! I made those setting from JPEG to RAW and EXTRA FINE and most others setting as well and what a huge difference in quality. Thanks!
Just bought this camera, and this was really helpful. Thanks!
I got my sonya7iii today and this helped a lot!
This video has just convinced me to buy this camera, love the no BS attitude, all hail king JP 🤘
I've watched many of your videos and I've never commented below any of them, this seems like the right occasion. Thank you very much, Jared, your videos rock!
Thanks for the guide. I just bought the A7R III and was lost as to many of the settings and buttons. (My last real camera was an EOS Digital Rebel....so from around 2003...that I quit using when my phone's camera resolution surpassed the DSLR.) Previous to that I had a wonderful Minolta film SLR. This Sony has so many settings and buttons that I just needed a quick guide to jump start just practicing. I appreciate the relatively quick run-through of "getting started" settings and what each button does/can do without too much added or side commentary. Looking forward to the 11 day mini course!
Hey Jared sure this has been stated already but the reason you would want to leave release with no lens to ON is if your using an adaptor with say Leica lenses the camera won't recognize the lens so if you have that OFF it won't shoot with it ON it will thanks for another great video
Huge thanks again. Your users guide was a huge help for me when I was getting started on my Sony A6000. Can't wait to get started shooting on my A7iii. Cheers!
Excellent directions and easy to follow. Thank you.
