@@Blaze6432 It's very ironic if u ask me. Despite being the majority, a lot of Chinese people actually look down on their own mother tongue. While Malays and Indians takes more prides in their own mother tongues.

It is designated and forcibly promoted by the government as the lingua franca within SG Chinese community at the expense of their real mother tongues i.e. Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese and Hakka that are still sometimes spoken by and heard from the older generation. Even Lee Kuan Yew himself acknowledged that for most Chinese Singaporeans Mandarin is at most a "stepmother tongue".

@@ranjithkumarramakrishnan7379 haha maybe that's bcos here we mostly educated in Tamil medium schools bro during primary school, later during secondary school we take Tamil ilakkanam and ilakkiyam as additional subjects. But I have observed most of Tamils in India don't prefer to be eduacted in Tamil medium schools and parents send their kids to English schools

I think the problem with Tamil speakers worldwide, not only in sg, is that, they will incorporate English words in most of their sentences to replace Tamil words, especially the pronouns, verbs and vocabulary words. But interrogative words like yenna, yen & yenggeh will still be used. If you have watched Tamil dramas before, i.e. Vasantham, you will know what I mean. Also, I read somewhere in a forum where this girl said that if a Tamil speaker speaks using pure Tamil, everyone will think that person is from another universe.
Same with the colloquial Malay language, aku, saya, awak, kau seems to be non-existent already.
In fact, I believe many other languages are follow the same trend as well, even Korean and Japanese. Using the English "loanwords" in sentence making will make the person seem more sophisticated and deep. In fact, now, no Koreans ever speak using pure Korean words. (Maybe those in the North, perhaps)
Jeong min kim true bro tanglish is most common amony indian youths these days. No need to go far just watch some tamil movies and songs (be it local or from india) their are many english loanwords. This tarnishes the tamil language reputation. That what i hate about it

Indian usually very good in speaking English. Overall I think Malay did it well. Anyway, we all seldom speak our mother tongue due to our country main concentration on English becos of businesses. Very good job to have this campaign to bring awareness of bring your own container. I did enjoy it on all videos on BYOC.

Malaysians speaks their own mother tongues at home too, while Malay and English are the bridge languages.

@@bench9967 The fact is that there are also many Chinese in Singapore who've poor English command. Not all Singaporeans are good in English, at the very least not the Chinese community.
Malaysian Indian mostly can speak Malay,sometimes better than the Malays themselves. It's always the Malaysian Chinese who have difficulities speaking in Malay due to most of them concentrate in mandarin in primary school
