I am quite excited about FCP for iPad even though the current version has too many limitations to make sense in my personal workflow. I will therefore not get it but I will be monitoring its development has I am convinced that Apple will work it all out over time. There is no doubt in my mind that at some point in the future I will be using FCP on an iPad, just not yet. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this excellent, detailed review. I confess my casual interest in FCP on iPad evaporated pretty much when I heard about the inability to work with media on external SSD (I like to have up to 10 projects in the go at any one time, and that’s no issue whatsoever in Lumafusion, for instance). But when I see all the other negatives, we’ll that’s where my interest ends. Why anyone would pay this considerable subscription for an app that does almost nothing better than its competition (at a once-off price) is beyond me. Thanks for saving me the time!

Very well balanced review. Nice Job!! Another feature that I miss is no Voice Over capability. I did not realize this until after I finished editing a travel video and then could not add voice over. So, I thought I would record to my voice narration directly on the iPad using my DJI Mic - but it also does not work on the iPad so I am now looking for a solution. Maybe I’ll just sent to desktop (M1 Pro)version (defeating the whole purpose) or re- edit the video in LumaFusion that does have voice over. Any suggestions out there?

You have pointed out what I have been saying to all the other RUclipsrs about this - this is not a Mobile version of Final Cut in that you can not round trip. Without this what is the point? Who is the user case for this? Needing an m1 iPad with a 1tb drive immediately excludes the argument of beginners and people who can’t afford a mac. The cheapest way to get into Final Cut is to get actual Final Cut!

IMO branding it as final cut was a bad idea from the start. Pros mostly won’t like it because of lack of functionality, and if they need to edit on the go, they probably have a MacBook Pro. My guess is that the market is for the new comer crowd, but they’re using FCP to give it more cred. I think they need to push more updates for the desktop version.

  • @kingalysterianlion5542
    @kingalysterianlion5542 Год назад

Hey Dylan thanks for the video. I think that your review is a little skewed and I would like to explain why.
Please know that there is no disrespect intended by this comment. My only goal is to present a different perspective. This is NOT meant as a negative review but rather a constructive critique of the video, its information, and the perspective that is presented regarding the application FCP for iPad.
First, you’re giving a review of a product that is literally the first version. Apple has a history of not running to do things but rather taking their time to do these things right.
Second, Apple has become an industry leader in making award winning content so I think that we should cut them some slack since it’s the first version.
Case and point they successfully made the most successful Sci-Fi novel series into an epic film so their defiantly not out of touch with film production but you have to remember that when they build tools their not JUST thinking about RUclipsrs. They have to think about the industry as a whole and the amount of strain their newest product will put on their devices. Final Draft is the industry standard and leader in Screenplay writing for TV Films and more, their mobile app for iPad does not have all of or even half of the features that the Mac app does because that just isn’t practical. It is mean to complement the other tools to provide continuity. Not replicate or replace them.
Next, you CANNOT compare your workflow on a Mac to the new application that is on the iPad. For starters the system resources and capabilities are wildly different. On top of that you have to remember that these are two different operating systems so the worlkflows will not be the same.
Also, your workflow is very dependent on Apple Motion which is not on the iPad yet and once again you can’t critique them for the very first release of a completely new application and workflow that they are deploying on their ecosystem it hasn’t been out long enough to even have it’s first major update.
They literally have consulted with the greatest filmmakers and content creators in the world to help supplement their main tools not replace them. They also have been paying attention to the companies that have been deploying NLE’s on iPad and now working to roll out a tool that is extremely stable.
Furthermore, most professionals that have had success have a team of people that help them when it comes to putting together content. I believe that it is unrealistic to expect a tool to be perfect and become the end all be all tool for everything. The fact is that most professionals either work with someone to handle audio or they use a service. I think that Apples addition of soundtracks is a great step but I also believe that the best use case for this feature right now is for the concepting phase or pre production phase to set a theme and a tone. I also believe that Apple is not trying to make this tool a replacement for Final Cut Pro on the Mac. I believe that the FCP for iPad app is aimed at a different use case and a different aspect of the video production workflow. As is, the first version of FCP for iPad is awesome because it gives you the ability to do a lot from the iPad and complete the process on the Mac. I believe that in time there will be more features that will come to the iPad app but this app is meant more as a companion to let you get some things done on the go.
Furthermore, DaVinci Resolve doesn’t offer even half of its features on the iPad app. Why? Because its not realistic or practical. As an app developer of applications for the Apple ecosystem with a focus on entertainment industry apps, I think it is very important that we keep the purpose of the tools in perspective. Otherwise the video becomes less educational and less informative. It would be wildly redundant and impractical for a film production to try and edit dailies or things like that on the iPad when they already have a more powerful device (MacBook Pro) with them. What makes more sense is to make the iPad app a great assistant that helps you get some of the basics done so that they can hand off the project to the Mac application to do more. Even for smaller content creators, this tool is great to serve as a starting point. If your focus Is the best possible quality for your viewers you want to do the majority of the heavy lifting on a more powerful machine. Like a Mac.
Fundamentally there is a great deal of machine learning that isn’t practical to implement in the iPad app because it would destroy your device resources. We have to remember that this isn’t a fixed media or basic data, this is video. One of the largest and most resource intensive mediums because it combines nearly all of the other creative mediums. It’s important to always look at where the tool fits in the pipeline/workflow because this tool was not developed to replicate or replace Final Cut Pro for Mac. It is an iPad. Not to mention that they priced it appropriately for what is is. A companion tool. I believe we need to keep this in mind when we evaluate tools like this. For example, The companion application for Logic Pro (Logic Pro for iPad) does not support third party VST or AU plugins. Why? Because the manuafacturers are not even developing their tools for the iPad becausee it is just not practical and would destroy system resources. On an iPad you are limited on storage space, performance, and peripherals so to compare what you can do on an iPad vs a Mac is wildly unrealistic, it also places the tools under scrutiny that it should not have.
We also must remember, ITS THE FIRST VERION. Ha ha ha. We need to keep that in perspective. Apple knows what they are doing. They have been making award winning tools that are super consistent for a very long time. And yes their tools may not be as insanely technical as other tools but the fact that they have been doing this while not compromising on being extremely environmentally friendly is something not only to take note of but also to respect. Not to mention they have also released a game changing new processor architecture over the last few years too so we should cut them some slack. They’re not trying to be DaVinci Resolve, and they’re definitely not trying to be Premiere pro (thankfully haha). They have always been themselves so lets let the tool grow in the wild. If Apple doesn’t improve it over the next few months then that’s something to be noted but with all of the negativity, wars, and pain that is being spread throughout the world right not let’s keep things more positive and constructive.
It literally was just released and I understand that you’re giving a review of their new app. But lets keep it in perspective and in the context of iPad applications. When you start trying to compare it to its flagship counterpart without taking into consideration the fact that they run on two completely different OS’s with different use cases in mind the video starts to depart from the excellence that you have always placed in your videos and dude you have a track record for making some super informative content. Sorry that this comment is so long. I felt that it was important to remember that this app is just a tool that is being introduced as another component in our video production pipelines. We shouldn’t place unrealistic expectations on a company for a tool that was just released and hasn’t even seen it’s first full year in the wild. Let’s give Apple some time to do what they do. I hope that you have a wonderful day and keep making amazing content as you always do Dylan. Thank you for all that you do. The tools are nothing if we don’t possess the skills of our craft. If RUclips went down, could you and would you still find a way to make content, tell great stories, and get it to the masses? Food for thought. Tools never can replace great skill and if you have the skills then a having access to machine learning or compound clips or premade soundtracks, or auto captioning won’’t matter. Because tools can easily fail but skills don’t. Be blessed.

As a desktop FCP user, it makes zero sense to spend $1100 on an iPad vs $999 on a MacBook to use FCP. You cannot edit from an external drive. It’s not for big projects. This is more or less a fancy TikTok video maker.

"Adjustment layers" on Final Cut Pro on iPad:
    1) create a solid background
    2) drag it into the timeline
    3) in the inspector change the blend mode to overlay
    4) apply an effect such as colour adjustments
To temporarily disable the "adjustment layer": in the inspector, turn the opacity to zero.
