All 3 are excellent I like the deluxe for high Altitude and colder weather. But 90 percent of my hiking I use the BRS because it fits nice and compact in my 750ml titanium cup with a fuel can

Agreed! The BRS is a great option when the weather is good!

I bought the BRS many years ago. And it worked decent but it leaked while turned completely off. We didn’t realize this until it had wasted all of our fuel.
Went and bought a couple MSR pocketrocket 2 and we’ve never had a single issue in years

I love my Pocket Rocket Deluxe. Superfast boiling times. Only beef I have with it, that the higher you go in altitude the more issues I have with the piezo igniter.

It's definitely smart to always carry a backup, especially in anything less than ideal conditions. When I've spilled food over my pot while cooking, I've had trouble with it, too, for awhile.

Timely information. I have the MSR deluxe, and it's what my son and i used on our recent trips. He, being a budget conscious college student, bought the BRS, but hasn't had an opportunity to use it yet.

I hope it works for him! Does he plan to go on his own soon? I saw you have a solo trip this weekend! Have fun!

@@WanderingSwitchback he doesn't have any specific plans right now. He doesn't have a car, and the one place accessible by bus is currently on fire, so he's dependent on other people. He starts school here at the community college at the end of the month after being in Connecticut for 2 years so hopefully he finds some hiking/backpacking buddies his age.
Got back from my trip yesterday. It was short and sweet, and I loved it! Can't wait to do more!

I have the Fire-Maple FMS-300T, similar to BRS. I am trying to shave ounces here and there in ultralight backpacking. Have the OG Pocket Rocket and a Jetboil too.

Thank you for this review, this helps a lot. at first i was aiming for light weight as well as low cost but the pocketrocket deluxe seems a very good option because it's much more efficient with fuel.

You're so welcome! I'm glad this was helpful! I was really curious how it was going to end up. I love my PR Deluxe. I hope you like yours!

Oh man! I wonder if it was an o-ring issue or quality or what? I haven't left mine on a canister yet (I've only used it for one backpacking trip and one other trip so far).

    • @SupermanBB
      @SupermanBB Год назад +1

I would imagine an issue with the O ring yeah. But it also wasn’t good at adjusting the flame and on high setting would spit fuel. Like fire balls lol.
I think mine was defective for sure. Because it sounds like most people have had a better experience.
But I’ve never regretted the msr. I love msr. I’ve always wanted a whisperlite and I’ll buy one eventually

Not cheap but I waited for a sale on the jet boil stash. It's my luxury item. Less than a pound with fuel and small in the pack. On the same trip my buddy had the MSR pocket rocket OG and it to take him longer to boil but we were under a tarp and it was raining and windy so they coils at the bottom of the jet oil made it more efficient. Speaking of efficiency, it may boil slower in certain conditions due to the lack of a regulator than some of the others but.. it saves fuel, averaging about 20-24 boils per 100g canister.
All that being said there are a lot of cheaper options (second choice was toaks and pocket rocket). I hike and some pretty rough terrain so I appreciate a balance between lightweight and rugged/reliable gear.
Have you ever looked at those valves allow you to refill your fuel canisters? Not trying to save money but I don't want to bring an almost empty can of fuel and a full one if I don't have to. The process seems like you could have the right amount of weight in it and what about the gas pressure?
    Another excellent review.

      Jetboils are another great option!
I've been refilling my fuel canisters for some time (that's the ONLY reason I still have so many of the large canisters!). I did a video about transfer devices when I first got mine, but I may do an updated version at some point talking about putting the receiving canister in the fridge before filling, which can make it go more smoothly and reduce the pressure for a better fill. ruclips.net/video/6X1Ecu1yHHo/видео.htmlsi=GERGGC3Rt5UruYgU

I bought the Fire Maple FMS- 116T. It's titanium, but has wider arms for my pot. I do a little hiss whenever I attach it and remove it from my fuel canister. I've only left the little handle open once and heard it, so closed it. It's a nice little stove. Not a Pocket Rocket, but I thought it seemed a little more robust than the BRS 3000T. Great video!!

Looks like a great option! How does it do with wind?

    • @zafiradaima
      @zafiradaima Год назад +1

@@WanderingSwitchback I'm not sure as I usually have it someplace on the ground, kind of protected so far. I've been places with either nearby trees, or in sort of a cove with a hill behind us so wind hasn't been much of an issue.

    Nicely compared.
I have an amazon BRS knockoff with lighter that was $6 years ago. The little one with thin plastic box. It is still fine...been through 4 cans of butane so 100+ uses.
I found if I take a tuna can and cut slits, then I can mount it on the struts inverted as a wind shield. It hasn't melted anything. Makes for a very stable surface. It also helps with non boil cooking.
As I fry sausage and eggs or a small pot of beans...I'm holding and moving the pan comstantly to slow the cook and avoid burn spots.
I may consider the broad eye if I ever need to replace the original.

Nice tricks! I've used a can lid on the old PocketRocket to diffuse the heat a bit for cooking. It works well, but definitely doesn't provide any wind protection. I ended up buying an Optimus clip-on wind screen years ago (adding significant weight and bulk). Then I tried one of those multi-panel ones on Amazon, and it promptly melted, so I never took that again.

I liked this video, but you really could have benefitted from some more final thoughts/analysis of results/comparison. Seemed like it really ended abruptly.

Yeah, I agree with you, and I appreciate the feedback. I ran out of sunlight to really get into it more when I ended up having to repeat some of the boil tests. I wish I'd had more time to go over the results more for sure!

Nothing sits well or flat on any Pocket Rocket. All of my pots slid off mine. Ditched it years ago for Snow Peak Giga Powers and BRS 3000T stoves. And now Soto Windmasters and Amicus. But now I use a Windburner and Zip and continue to use Esbits and Trangia.

Oh man, sorry to hear you had that experience with the PocketRockets! The Soto Windmaster was the other one I was considering when I bought the PR Deluxe (but it wasn't in stock when I was shopping). I also have a Whisperlite for some conditions.

I think you’re talking about the pocket rocket original rather than comparing it to the pocket rocket 2.

I mentioned in the video that what I had was the original PR, but that I was giving the stats for the 2, which has a similar performance to the original. 1:59
