Between you and Mike everything is covered from head to toe. Thanks to both of you guys as this is exactly what the home fitness world needs.
Mike is the go-to authority on these things, I think. I am just happy if I am able to contribute a bit, from time to time.
Awesome seeing you back on the TG brother! Brought up some great points, I personally always love a narrow closer line of action on almost chest exercises and used to always seek out narrow functional trainers. Used to hate TG fly, but by just dropping my legs and controlling / forcing tension, I started love it. Great video / topic
It’s funny you mention that, because I had edited the video down from its original 20 minute length, and in the original version, I actually explained how you can still activate the chest with the typical movements, but that usually you have to be very experienced, understanding exactly “how” to activate your chest as the primary mover, and have good mind-muscle connection.
@@SkylerKingTW It's always that fine balance of information to make everyone happy with the edits!
Stil the king of the totalgym , thnx for the video!!
OG Breedtoz in the comments section!
This was super helpful. As you stated in the video, I would always fatigue my shoulders early during chest exercises. This would sometimes even lead to shoulder pain, causing my to end my chest movements earlier than I wanted to. I remembered some tips from one of your early TG workout videos on how to mitigate that, which did help, but I would still occasionally have the shoulder pain issue. These two crossover movements you explained are awesome, just tried them this weekend. Big difference! Thank you!
You're definitely not alone in your experience. I am very happy to hear that this helped. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thanks. I’ve had my total gym for 25 yr & love it, especially now that I’m older than dirt. It’s much kinder than free weights. Great tip on pecs!
Yes thank you 😊
That's a very cool and valuable tip! Thanks!
Thank you Skyler you are the OG on everything thats Total Gym training and exercise. Hope your well you and your family.
I will still talk about the Total Gym from time to time. I just want to avoid the craziness from before. Thank you, and I hope that you and yours have a Merry Christmas (and are generally happy and healthy).
Interesting variation! I used to think I did not feel my chest much, but now I grip the handles from the outside of the cable rather than the inside. Its much more comfortable also in my opinion.
Thank you ! Love my Total gym XLT
Outstanding. I love this. I do this with my bodylastics bands hooked into the wall. Can’t wait to do these on TG. Your audio is also very professional sounding. A radio voice. Peace!
Update. I received and have used my TG Fit for about 3 weeks now. This works great! I also do a chest move whe I lay down on my back with head at the tower end. Push down with both handles parallel to and just riding along the top of the board. Very short movement but this burns the lower side of my pecs very effectively. Peace.
Awesome, thanks
this man know his art, subscribe people,my chest inproved from this idea, ive been bodybuilding for 30 years and know what work, hes 💯right on chest
I really appreciate the kind words and the support.
Thanks Skyler! Great tip!! This is certainly a game changer.
Truly awesome advice. Thank you! Hope to see you more often with Total Gym instruction.
Great vid, always struggled with flys on tg.
I can't wait for you to try this variation, then.
good job Skyler.
Thanks SO much! It's great to see you putting out another high quality TG video after such a long time.
Yeah, I will still upload Total Gym stuff from time to time, but it will all be on this channel since this is where I upload anything gym related. I've also got another one I uploaded not too long ago where it was essentially just a full workout I did on the Total Gym.
Great to see you back, I'm a big fan of you and also Mike, been using TG for over 20 years, will use it this morning.
I have the RS Encompass and with all the ways to position the height and angle of the cables I'm able to achieve constant tension throughout the movement.
Awesome videos ! Thanks for sharing so useful ideas. Thanks a lot
I hope it helps. Thank you for watching.
Makes sense great explanation
I hate doing one side at a time.
Although it seems great for a finishing move, maybe after dips cable crossovers or even traditional presses. Ty for posting
thanks! this is exactly the info I needed.. had already given up working chest on TG
I hope it helps.
do some push-ups with your chest and arm workout with the Total Gym. It's benefiting me very well with good results👍👍👍
Spot on.
I felt this! Thank You
man u know yr stuff brother,💯
Good stuff
cool stuff. I still like doing the traditional press and flys but will give this a try
As a movement pattern, there is nothing wrong with the traditional way of doing the press and flies. It just isn’t very effective at targeting your chest, specifically.
Great video/info.
i do shoulder raises but i flip the hands and now the tension on the chest is staedy all the way through the entire movement
I do the same thing only with the other cable so I sit sideways at a 90. The cable is coming from behind. I’ll try this as well. Thanks.
I just clicked "Like", I'm leaving a comment, and I just subscribed. Not only was it a great video (very well communicated), but not once did you ask for a like/comment/subscribe. Well done.
Ive been complaining about the same thing with chest for the last 15 years.
I added this movement to my push session this evening and it does give a different type of stretch. An excellent addition to TG chest options so thanks!
That said, I've actually found I can target the chest really well with the TG so I'm surprised it's an issue for others. It could partly be that I'm 5'9" with slightly T-rex arm length but also I do my flyes with a bent elbow and the pull is then on average coming more from where the wire crosses my elbow, a bit like a pec dec. I also lean forward, and push my chest forward deep into the press so my chest gets a strong stretch (stretch-mediated hypertrophy and all). As for the low angle; I just treat it like an incline fly; pressing low to high.
There are definitely ways to target chest with the Total Gym, even with the more traditional movements. It typically requires tweaks in form, or good mind-muscle connection, a better understanding of what exactly you are doing and why, etc. Unfortunately, for the average person, that becomes a problem. This *should* more or less be universal in its effectiveness.
still feel it more in my shoulders
hi skyler. do you have any tips on how to make the older total gym models rails stronger so they can hold more wight without bending? im thinking about buying a used total gym 1500 but it only has a 250 pound limit. thanks
Unfortunately, it is not just a matter of the rails. The hinge mechanism would need to be upgraded. The wheels/rollers would need to be beefed up. Basically a majority of the machine would need to be upgraded to ensure that there wasn't a weak link.
thank you skyler @@SkylerKingTW
Thank you, very informative. it appeared that you were indeed under tension as you demonstrated. Any concerns regarding warm up or activation before trying this out?
Nothing out of the ordinary. Just do what you would normally do for warmups.
What is the name of you other channel that you posted vids of TG during covid lockdown?
It's this one www.youtube.com/@SkylerKing
The only Total Gym videos that are still publicly available on that channel are the oldest ones, showing exercise variety for each muscle group. The other videos such as "hacks" or the workout videos (routines, follow me, etc) are now "members only" on that channel.
The best way to get Chest activation with the total gym is do your flat and incline chest pressing with the cables over the forearms rather than under and do pullovers instead of flies
Muscle activation is largely dictated by movement patterns. So, a movement pattern that fundamentally biases delt activation, for example, isn't going to suddenly bias the chest simply because the cables are routed over your elbows rather than under. Pullovers are another story. Depending on how they are being performed, they can and typically are used as a very effective lat exercise.
What is your other channel name so I can find the videos?

Great video. Is this version better than adding the longer bar with pulleys behind you?
It would depend on how long the bar is, but due to the limitation on bar width that is inherent with the factory cable (too wide, and the cable won't be long enough) I would say that this is likely a better choice in terms of full range of motion muscle activation. It is going to be more challenging, though.
Thank you!
Love mine.
Crossovers with TRX?
Much preferred. Some people are just hardcore about the total gym and want to use it, exclusively.
