Total Gym - Travel
For the next 6-8 months, I will be working out of town and only going home on the weekends.
It was pretty obvious that I needed to figure out a training solution.
There are no gyms in this area, so getting a day pass or a short term membership isn't an option.
I tried TRX only and while it's great for some things, I hate using it for other things.
I then decided to bring all of my resistance bands and band accessories. But, it is the same story. I love bands for some things, but really dislike them for other things.
Then it occurred to me that I still have my old Total Gym XLS in my workshop, and it wouldn't be difficult to load it into the back of my car and bring it up to Taoyuan with m...

    I always think it’s comical when guys try to overinflated their credentials or life skills to make their product seem better. Truth be told, if X3 is an awesome product, I could care less if a doctor or janitor made it. But if the guy is inflating himself due to his background to make the product seem better, then it devalues the product to me.

    Interested to see this review. I use a band/board/bar system as my travel gym (about to add some TRX straps after watching another of your videos). I like that this one has the two piece bar, so you get the benefit of working out with a longer bar, but the travel convenience of the short bar. My “gym” has a short bar, which is fine, but it would be nice to have the option of a longer bar that would also fit for travel.

    suicide flies...nice name.....i refer to them as face-plant flies!! LOL. gr8 workout. saving it for some follow-along (with 15-35 pound bands and less angle on the TG bench ofc!) EDIT: your thoughts on the BW? would you purchase it now having used it? what does it add to your workout (besides the isometric contractions)? thx. EDIT2: you prob already know about Serious Steel and their 3 diff length loop bands, but just in case....being maybe a foot shorter than you, i also have Serious Steel 37" and 32" loop bands (and their 41" also) for some pre-stretch in my case with their shorter loop-bands. i only mention this b/c you're so strong that you might be able to use the shorter bands effectively (at least for some specific exercises) as long as you don't exceed their recommended total stretch-length, which as you know results in increased wear plus reduced service-life, as well sudden premature ultimate-failure.

      Lol, The name is a reference to the old school bodybuilding move called "suicide bench" where you are laying flat on a bench with a barbell, but you keep your elbows directly out to the sides (inline with your shoulders) and bring the bar down to your collarbone area. Of course, if you fail... lol. These flies follow a similar movement pattern. I am brand new to the Bullworker. This workout was my first time even trying it. I will put it through its paces and get back to you with my thoughts on how useable it really is.

    Great video, friend! I have both resistance bands and suspension trainer, and I have been using the suspension trainer mostly for bodyweight rows. It just naturally felt like a better way to do rows compared to bands (where I could never get the resistance right) or weights (where making adjustments to the resistance required stopping the workout, and fatigue the lower back supporting the weight). Suspension trainers made it easy, just change the angle of your body and keep going. They seem to do a better job of keeping the workout focused on the upper back, without lower back fatigue limiting your workout. At least for me, anyway.

    thx for making this vid. my personal experience with HIT began in the 70's for my wannabe power-lifter days. personally, some nice pluses in terms of strength-gain, but back then we did it continuously (one set per muscle group, 8-12 reps until both concentric and eccentric failure--with the help of a lifting partner to achieve this failure; muscles were like baby flab after; and heavy compound lifts like squats and deadlifts...a nice endorphin-high--body going into slight shock from the stress...not sure that was good at all). the result was nice strength gain (optimal? i don't know), but often stress injuries like tendonitis occurred as well. personally had two partial-thickness tears from continued extreme exertion in the face of pain (no pain no gain??? in this case, too much pain = loss of gain---resultant scar-tissue doesn't help strength!). so, was it best approach overall? not so sure. in my opinion, personally HIT shoulda been non-continuous week after week and not as extreme. 20-20 hindsight i guess. i get the luv-handle issue, bro. first place fat builds on me if i let it. that good Taiwanese-food u talk bout elsewhere could be my downfall !! lol

    • @SkylerKingTW
      @SkylerKingTW 2 месяца назад

      It's not uncommon for westerners to come to Taiwan with the idea of teaching English for a year or so, then moving on to another place or going back home. There seems to be a funny trend among them where they almost always leave Taiwan considerably heavier than when they arrived... lol. Yeah, I think certain aspect of HIT are useful. I think it can be used for short periods of time as a break from the usual routine and potentially be a net positive. I even think that some people will simply respond well to it, regardless, likely due to either genetic differences or a unique approach to HIT or maybe a mix of the two. I have tried to be optimistic about it and have tried it so many times with so many variations and tweaks and improvements. Unfortunately, what I have read, what I have seen, and what I have experienced all seem to agree that it's just not optimal for most people, most of the time. Of course, if someone is getting good results with it, then I would never try to talk them out of doing it. At the end of the day, if it works for you, it works.

Have you tried the Arthur Jones of ~ 14 exercises that cover the entire body, 1 set maybe 2 on certain exercises, done 3 x per week like on a MWF schedule? And maybe after stagnating, have the Wednesday become a Not To Failure day like Ellington Darden suggested? BTW, I am now trying to make HIT work, again for the umpteenth time. I never stopped weight training for over 40 years now. Of course, most of us want to know what resembles the "more optimal" program, please ???

    • @SkylerKingTW
      @SkylerKingTW 2 месяца назад

      I have tried every approach to HIT I could find (Arthur Jones, Mentzer, Yates, others, my own modified version, etc). In the end, I found the Jones and Mentzer had the worst approached (no matter which ones I tried) and that Yates probably had the best, but it still wasn't as effective as traditional training. Optimal will be different for everyone, though. There are a lot of factors.

    • @SkylerKingTW
      @SkylerKingTW 2 месяца назад

      That's because there is no single program that is universally optimal for everyone. Even a program that is optimal for one person will become "less than optimal" if that person's lifestyle changes. For example, if someone suddenly finds themselves with a very poor diet, not sleeping enough, very sedentary during the day, and very stressed out on a regular basis, then they simply won't recover as well and the routine would need to be modified or even completely changed to accommodate that.

      Yeah, I'm good. I actually laughed about it, as it was initially surprising but simultaneously was somewhat expected on some level. Those bands equate to about 300lbs total, at the top position. Given that I wasn't even halfway up, I doubt the resistance at that moment could have been much more than 200lbs.

  • @pj-0
    @pj-0 2 месяца назад

    thx for expanding my thinking. i've used resistance bands alone as well as with free weights (similar to using chains on a deadlift) and with the total gym also, but had yet to use them as an adjunct to the TRX suspension trainer i own (same one u show in the vid). they seem to be an excellent match. perhaps alternating b/t the trainer and the bands for each individual muscle group before moving on to the next muscle group to be trained would be a good workout approach??? maybe? your thoughts if you're so inclined an have the time to comment. no pressure and no problem if you don't reply. while you were speaking of compound movements, it seems isolation exercises would similarly benefit (thinking of chest flys here, for one example). likewise that same max loading concept you were explaining would benefit even bicep curls from combining suspension and bands, even with ~170 degrees of motion during a full contraction of a bicep curl rep and which has a more complex strength curve (2 separate curves in a sense before and after the 90 degree joint angle longest moment arm position) the bands and suspension trainer would work synergistically. thinking off the top of my head, sadly i don't see a way to combine the suspension trainer and a band (looping it through the suspension trainer 'arms' center rotation point for example) to have the best of both worlds as the band would function as an assist (as they are sometimes utilized for pullups by some). i think the band would need to be anchored low opposite the overhead anchor point of the suspension trainer with the band pulling back on one's body as the rep's movement progresses--a bit too complex of a setup unless one has a dedicated home gym room. you're very creative, if you can think of some other way, please share. another excellent vid. tyvm. appreciate your time and effort in making the vid.

    • @SkylerKingTW
      @SkylerKingTW 2 месяца назад

      Alternating the bands and the TRX as you describe would be a great idea, I think. And yes, though I mentioned a few compound movements as examples, it is the same deal with isolation movements. There could be a few options for combining bands and TRX to be used simultaneously, but it would only be practical for a few basic movements. I will start thinking of some ways around that, actually, and see what I come up with.

One of the nuances that would obviously overload the explanation you've given, but is worth mentioning is pre-stretch for resistance bands; i.e. if the band is already stretched then the strength curve differences are somewhat reduced, it needn't just be no tension to tension. Also for traditional lifting; using a landmine (or the classic tennis ball on the end of the barbell) for t-bar like rows, overhead presses, etc., has a subtle increased load in the bottom part of the rep due to angle of the pivot. I'd also add that gymnastic rings are a similarly fantastic addition to the kind of setup you mention for the same reason as the TRX (though I'd argue more comfortable). Bottom line though; TRX/Gymnastic rings making a great compliment to resistance bands is excellent advice (as long as we don't mention leg training 😉).

      Oh, absolutely. There are many specific examples, such as preacher curls, that bias loading the bottom of the rep. I more so meant that no other type of training equipment, as a whole and on average, overloads the bottom. You're also right that preloading the band helps, but it still results in loading being biased towards the top of the rep rather than the bottom. No matter how you load a band or which type of band you use, it will never provide more load at the bottom of the rep than at the top (not that I'm aware of, anyway).

    This is probably my favorite video of yours so far. I had the privilege of watching you as you grew up and developed the sense of the man you wanted to be. I remember when you joined ROTC in High School and became enamored with the idea of "honor" and "team" and being your very best. I remember when your heroes were Arnold and Stalone, for their movies, and then on a more practical note, for their dedication to their workouts and fitness. I have watched you go through Basic Training and become a very dangerous human being. I have watched you grow into manhood and eventually fatherhood, and how you embraced the madness, the pain, and the blessings. I am so proud of you, my son. I have lived my dream life vicariously through you. You have become the master, the teacher. You have far surpassed any and all ideals that I had imagined for you from your childhood. You, Skyler, are my hero. I am so blessed to call you my son. My life is not much to brag about, but you, son, are my Legacy . . . one of the very few things from my life I can really be proud of. ❤

    Still have to work through the rest of it, but excellent commentary. The camera example is spot on to people wanting to hyper analyze fitness versus just getting in there and developing their own "eye" for it. What makes training fun (at least for me) is trying new things and then making it part of your own program. Love the rocky backdrop. Funny enough I think I have the same video rolling testing out a screen for an equipment device.

      I chose the Rocky video for a few subtle and not so subtle reasons, but I absolutely thought of you while editing it in... I think you're the only other person I know, other than my sister, who can quote those movies. And yeah, that's the biggest thing - If a specific type of training is simply more enjoyable and it will keep you more consistent, then that alone is all the reason you need to keep doing it. After all, the program that you do is always going to work better than the one you don't do.

    The best way to get Chest activation with the total gym is do your flat and incline chest pressing with the cables over the forearms rather than under and do pullovers instead of flies

      Muscle activation is largely dictated by movement patterns. So, a movement pattern that fundamentally biases delt activation, for example, isn't going to suddenly bias the chest simply because the cables are routed over your elbows rather than under. Pullovers are another story. Depending on how they are being performed, they can and typically are used as a very effective lat exercise.
