Hey Jarrod, just wondering since DDR5 is already "running in dual-channal", would a 8 GB DDR5 stick be more similar to 8+8 GB DDR4 or a 16 GB stick of DDR4? And would this mean that having uneven sticks such as 8+16, 8+24, or 8+32 in DDR5 be usable, as in be better than just 8+8 or just one 8 of DDR5, in situations where you can't switch out the 8 GB stick i.e. it being soldiered to the motherboard?

Do you know, or can you check if DDR5 increases performance of Intel's iris Xe? The 96 EU chip on laptops with DDR4 3200 is almost 50% slower than the same chip with LPDDR4X. The jump from 11th gen to 12th gen didn't change the number of EUs, but jumping to DDR5 must have had some effect.

Good idea with the Iris Xe performance comparison, but perhaps a bit too much work for too little gain. I just checked on Geizhals (German product filtering engine) for Intel Core 12th Gen laptops that do *not* have a dedicated GPU and then compared the number of listings with DDR4 vs. DDR5. Result: only 31 listings with DDR5, yet 384 listings with DDR4. In other words: DDR4 still dominates the "iGPU-only" market. So any comparison to make would be largely academical without little practical use for laptop buyers. When filtering for 12th Gen laptops *with dGPU*, the market is split almost 50:50, with 294 listings on DDR4 and 267 listings on DDR5. So that comparison is quite relevant to the buyer at the moment. But I agree, the pretty good performance of Intel Iris Xe is not receiving enough spotlight in the tech review space. Perhaps Intel should step up their marketing. They haven't even given a properly supported answer to G-SYNC and FreeSync yet. // Tom

And here I was worried about the 5200mhz vs 5800mhz ram on my new laptop, both ddr5, although the 5800 is marked as xmp. But really, if the difference is this tiny for ddr4 vs ddr5 AND a fairly big difference in frequency, then 600 mhz frequency difference in the same generation should really be pretty tiny, nothing to care about. The RAM in my new laptop can be changed so if I really for some reason want better RAM later, I can just buy some. I'm coming from 2666 mhz ddr4 ram in my alienware m17r3 laptop... and it's doing fine enough even at 4k with stable 60fps with some settings tweaked. This alienware m18r1 with max specs except for RAM will absolutely bulldoze any game.

Would my razer blade pro running DDR4 2666v 2x8g be able to use hyperx 3300v ddr4 1x32g? just purchased a new one and Ram is making eletrick buzzing sound.... i called company and they told me that "Ram is good, Razer pro can only support ram upto 2800 frequency, but the Ram is 3300v..... that's why this would not work on my pc"

I guess right now, there's no real major difference between DDR4 and DDR5. If you're getting a new laptop or bulding a new PC, it's best to get DDR5. If you have a good gaming laptop already or PC, it's probably best to wait to upgrade or buy a new MOBO or Laptop.

  • @terranox17

you should compare price by price . 130 dollars of ddr5 vs 130 dollars for example . 64gb ddr4 cas 16 vs 64gb probably 4800 mhz and cas 44 . then the ddr4 would be faster . of course if you do not factorize this , then a 250 dollars 64gb of ddr5 vs 130 dollars of ddr4 would win almost everytime

My DDR3 32 GB ram has a latency of 32ns. unlike 90ns you are testing. also, mine is 2rx8. This number makes a lot of difference. DDR4 ram battery life is dependent on what manufacturing they used to build it. A 10nm will be super efficienct compared to 14-20nm. This has nothing really to do with DDR4/DDR5

In games, the differences seem minimal.. I guess the reason is because most modern games are GPU-bound.. and memory is pretty much tied to CPU..

as of now, ddr5 == high performance at lesser power consumption, vs ddr4. maybe not by much, but if you’re getting similar performance (or more) at lesser power consumption means less electricity bills in 10 years and also more environmental friendly. we are yet to see more results 😊
