Hi Terry, thank you so much for the video!! I had an actual paper jam in my MFC-9340CDW (a sheet of paper was was rolled on the fuser roller). Thanks to your video I learned how to remove the fuser unit and remove the paper (time consuming as the sheet got glued itself because of the toner and heat).

My printer had a "paper jam" for years! I am so glad I found this video. Thank you for uploading it! I'm assuming that the only way to prevent this issue in the future is to keep the printer unplugged when I'm not using it. 🙂

Brilliant video. It solved my intermittent 'paper jams" when no paper was actually jammed.
I tested the original IR sensor from my printer and found 20mA through the diode side gave me only 0.14mA through the opto-transistor side.
I measured a similar sized spare I had bought for another project and for 5 and 20mA on the diode side gave 6 and 12 mA on the transistor side respectively. So about 100 time better!
I popped that into the board and it has worked perfectly for 50 pages so far. Before I could only get one page out, sometimes when it felt like it, before announcing a 'jam'.
You have saved me throwing away some spare toners, so I will make a donation via paypal.
    Cheers,
    Greg

Cheers greg, I have contemplated adding a pull up resistor on the opto transistor side to compensate for the loss of sensitivity as the printer ages but I have always wondered why it loses sensitivity, I did a service call yesterday, for a completely different brother machine but the same type of jam fault and that persons home was infested with mould. I mean you walked into the unit and you could smell the mould in the air and that damp feeling. I took one look at the top of the printer and the dust settled on top of it was not dust but mould. I clean all the opto sensors with a damp chux with weak chlorine and bingo the printer worked normally again. Starting to wonder after all these years if failing opto sensors are due to mould growth not just a weak IR LED diode.

@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs I'm not sure I understand the logic of it being a weak diode. If I understand correctly, the IR signal passes across the sensor gap when the door is open, so an active signal indicates that the door is open. When the door is closed, the little plastic flag is supposed to block the gap in the sensor, so the absence of a signal is the normal operating condition, right? If so, then shouldn't a weakening diode fail to the door-closed condition, instead of the door open condition?
UPDATE: On further consideration, I believe that the photo-transistor in the component is failing shorted. If you look at the traces on the back of the board, the big thick one connecting many of the pins is probably a ground trace. The output of the diode and the emitter (E) are both connected to this trace, and pin 5 of the long connector connects to the collector (C). So pin 5 is probably the sense line for the rear door. When the component is powered, the diode is always emitting, so when the gap is clear, the base of the transistor will be powered, and current will flow from the collector to the emitter, which will pull the collector down to ground. When the gap is blocked, the base will have no power, so the collector will remain at input voltage as an open circuit. Therefore, pin 5 high means door closed, and pin 5 low means door open.
To test this, I removed the component from the board, and reinstalled the board. An what do you know, the printer is printing again! I just have to be mindful that it won't necessarily detect paper jams in the fuser, so it might keep grinding away if that happens. But I've had this printer for 7 years or so, and never had a jam, so who knows?

    Hi Terry,
Thanks for your feedback. I decided to go a bit further and do some experiments.
I used the IR LED and IR Receiver from a 36 piece "Arduino sensor kit" for these tests.
I released the clips on the Brother IR unit and slid out the clear IR diode and black IR receiver.
I washed bother in Isopropyl alcohol and dried them with paper towel before starting.
I connected two separate 5V, 20 mA current-limited supplies, one for the diode, one for the receiver.
Using the Brother receiver, I got 11 mA output with the Arduino kit Diode at 10mA input.
Using the Arduino receiver I got 0.42mA output, with the brother diode at 10mA. That's the same result as using Brother receiver.
Therefor I think we can safely say the Brother IR diode goes low output.
Even boosting the Brother LED current to 40mA there was almost no increase in the current through the receiver
    Cheers,
    Greg

      @@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs Hi Terry,
I don't think it's planned obsolesce by Brother. It's just works out that way.
It would just be one of a thousand parts all supplied by third parties on the lowest tender.
And its an easy fix, as long as we can get parts, such as the replacement board that you offer.

Hello sir brother printer 8065dn experiences paper jam at first print or first Photocopy. I can't send multiple pages for print to the printer because if it manages to print the first page, the second page will jam. When this jam happens, i will have to use my hand to pull out the paper from the roller which is right at the output tray and also i will need to remove the drum unit to remove the second paper jam. I have checked the fuser unit; the upper and lower roller of the fuser unit and it looks good. I have cleaned the rollers yet none of this has stopped the Jam issue.
Can we now say the sensor at the back of the printer which is situated at the same spot as seen in this video needs a change or cleaning of the sensor?

My sensor circuit board is fine. The plastic flag on the end of the Sensor Arm is broken on mine , thus the sensor is never tripped. so I get a rear jam error that I can't clear on My " HL L3290cdw" Do you know where I can get this part .

Hi My MFC9330CDW is giving me error when I print two sided print. I prints first page fine and when pulling back same page for back side printing, paper goes back in and comes out with error on printer about paper jam. It shows takeout the paper tray and remove jam paper. In my printer paper always jam under the paper tray, i think in duplexer. And paper stay almost flat its look like it feed the paper but not all the way for other side printing.

My brother MFC 9340 CDW fades, the top half of the first page is perfect, but it’s fades away by the end. Also, “registration “ fails. I noticed a dent/ surface imperfection in the belt unit.
Using genuine brother toner, however it’s a few years old. Please advise. Thanks!

My machine now has over 100000 copies, just replaced the 4 drums, a message under maintenance says to replace the fuser and paper folder kit. The message only lasts a minute. How long does a fuser normally last? Machine has never had a paper jam. Only complaint is doing a copy with blue ink writing, comes out not as dark in black only copy mode. Color mode works well.

When calibration does not fail, page top start with ok black but fade very soon - fading is noticeable from very top of the first page, on second page is still barely visible, on third its completely invisible. Black toner cartridge works perfectly when placed in other colour drum slot. Contacts of cartridges and drum seems to be clean.

I had the Same problem on My HL l3290cdw . My printer is heavy and was not resting on a flat surface, the printer ended over hanging the plastic table and the edge of the table somehow pushed on the bottom of the printer and distorted the underside of the paper tray . And this is the path of the paper when you print 2 sided. My fix was to place the printer on a flat solid table or a flat straight floor.
