  • OK, so I was looking online myself for a HOW-TO GUIDE on upgrading the RAM on the Acer Aspire One series NETBOOKS, but to no avail I couldn't find anything regarding this particular model type. AOD255.
So ... when I purchased my new netbook I decided to make a video on how-to upgrade the RAM. This is my 1st 'upgrade tutorial' type video so I'm kinda nervous and stuttering and I'm a bit shaky with the camera and the picture sometimes goes fuzzy. If you can get past that I'm sure this video will be quite informative and helpful to you in upgrading the ram. Its a very simple process and it can be done in about 10-15 minutes, with patience =).
The RAM I used in this video to upgrade my NETBOOK is as follows:
    Mushkin Essentials 2GB DDR2 667MHz PC2-5300 CL4 SODIMM
I recommend either using this same type of memory or the KINGSTON brand of SODIMM memory modules as that is the make of the 1GB stick that comes with the system.
    Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 SODIMM (KVR667D2S5/2G)
    =================================
Once you upgrade the ram and uninstall all the pre-bundled 'BLOATWARE' you will notice that the AOD255 runs pretty quick. Although I am disappointed with the lack of features in 'WINDOWS 7 STARTER' this can also be fixed with a quick WINDOWS ANYTIME UPGRADE.
I manged to find a good deal and I purchased a WINDOWS ANYTIME UPGRADE KEY to HOME PREMIUM on eBay for $30 USD. I notice it runs much better and I am satisfied to have the full functions of Windows 7 which should have been included with the netbook from the start.
Windows 7 Starter? Microsoft what where you thinking?? =(
    ================================
    all the best
    g/l

    Thanks!! FYI:
-This applies for the AO522 (AOD522)
    -The AO522 has 4 spring-loaded tabs at the top, at F4, F8, F12, and between Ins/Delete
The keyboard is plastic with a foil cover on the bottom. Not easy to break if you're careful.
-You don't need to remove any screws from under the laptop (and the rubber feet don't come off
-If you accidentally pull the ribbon out like I did, remove the white holder (has two clip arms like the ram slot), slide the free ribbon end in place, and replace holder.

I cannot believe I actually got this thing done. I couldn't have done it without this video. Thank you very much. Really, the only hard part was getting around that fixed clip on upper left. I had to do some serious bending and had it pop out pretty hard. I don't know why Acer had to make it so difficult. There MUST be better design to remove the keyboard easily. The rest was very, very easy.
    Thanks again.

i just got this netbook at wall-mart for 2 benjamins an hour ago. it came with xp home. naturally the 1 gig ram is the first to go to make way for 2gigs. your tutorial is 100% on spot. secondly, i ididn't even run the xp, i delete it and install win 7 ultimate using my flash drive. mine came with 1 gig hynix ddr2 800, and i replaced it with a 2gig corsair ddr2 800 from the old eepc that already retired. everything works great. thank you, i really appreciate it.

Thank you so much. Anyone looking for information on upgrading Memory (RAM) on the Acer Aspire One AOD255 netbook should watch this. I looked all over for information, and didn't find anything. I had heard that upgrading the ram was very difficult, however it seems fairly straight forward. Although the Acer AOD255 versions vary based on processor or memory type (I have the Intel N550 version with DDR3 memory) the design appears similar, and I imagine the steps will be identical for me. Thanks!

THX a LOAD man! I am a complete beginner who tried several video's before starting on this adventure. Yours was the only one which really explained everything clearly so that no mistakes were made. My notebook is working nicely now with a 2Gb RAM. Do not apologize for the quality of the video. It really did the trick! Thx again.

Jan. 8, 2010. Just wanted to say thank you very much for this video. I just completed the upgrade and it works perfectly!
I did not realize when I bought this machine that the memory was supposedly not upgradable or at least by the user.
I followed your instructions and this went so smooth. as was recommended start in the right hand corner of the keyboard at the delete key. I used the Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 SODIMM (KVR667D2S5/2G)
    Thanks again

Thank you sooooooooo much! I've done a lot of laptop RAM upgrades before but this was my first time to have a RUclips video as a guide and you made it incredibly easy (although I have to agree with the consensus that the keyboard is a you-know-what to get off! I ended up doing it with all clips off except the one next to esc).

Thanks for taking the time to make this easy upgrade, 2 gb ram installed even though the specs say 1gb max win 7 starter move along just as fast as my dual core laptop in single apps. Great netbook people make sure you get the one with 64mb dedicated graphics.

    Keyboard ribbon cable:
The connector on the mainboard has two parts. The bit that lays on top of the cable is a hinged latch, about 2mm deep. Lift the exposed edge with a plastic tool or fingernail. If you use a metal screwdriver you may damage the ribbon cable. When open, the ribbon cable will come out easily. To reassemble, carefully hold the ribbon in place and make sure it is seated all the way against the back of the connector, then push down the latch with a finger or a plastic tool.

Great help. Most important is that in other videos they want you to take out all the screws in the bottom...not for this model. I have the N550, 1.5GHZ, with 1GB DDR3, and upgraded with a Kingston, which has a speed higher than the Crucial 1066, but it works fine. The Kingston card is number KVR1333d3s8s9/2g, 204 pin, and instead of calling itself DDR3, it calls itself PC3. Cost 300baht ($10) in Thailand. Thanks for the video. (and, yes, keyboard removal is tricky...)

These Netbooks are great for ROMS.
I have every single NES and SNES game on my D255E, and bought the NES replica USB controllers...I have played a lot at work (im an Admin) and at home. More fun than any Xbox or PS3 i have!...
    Btw, I just upgraded my D255E to 2GB DDR3 ($23shipped on Amazon).
push in the clips (4) top edge of keyboard, gently pry up, slide out.
    unplug keyboard ribbon.
    remove 4 'door' screws.
    push out bottom.
    remove old ram, install new.
    install. Done and done.

    Greetings from Malakoff, France,
Many thanks for your initiative & humility. I'd just like to add feedback to the forum: removing the key pad proved V delicate. After pushing in the clips then trying to pry off the pad with a plastic card I had to tug & pull to remove the pad. It got warped in the job. The clips remained stuck. To secure the pad, I had to cut out minute rectangles from a plastic card and use them as sub clips. The machine is working albeit with a slightly deformed pad.

Just done this, I used Crucial.com RAM. My observations - only four keyboard clips are movable, at Del, F12, F8, and F4. The KB has a lip all the way around you need to get the other side to prise the KB out. I took a decorators razor blade and ground the sharp edges off giving me a thin but strong tool to prise out the KB. I expected the base "door" to drop open but it takes some force to pop it off, start at the front edge. Thanks for the vid, couldn't have done this without it.

  • @PlugInRides
    @PlugInRides 13 лет назад

@stupidjunk878 - I just did it, and there are two square holes where the battery was. You can use them to push up the top edge of the keyboard. I wish he had told us the ESC tab was fixed! Once you lift up on the top right corner of the keyboard, you can pull the top left edge back slightly, to clear the fixed tab. The keyboard is somewhat flexible and will bend a little during removal. I have the N550 version, so it uses DDR3.

For my Acer Aspire One AOD255-1345, I added a Samsung DDR3 2GB 1066MHz 204 pin SODIMM (M471B5773CHS). Note that once the battery is removed, the bezel at the top of the keyboard can be flexed by pressing to allow a credit card to be inserted to pry out the keyboard .

Fuzzy video aside, you did a great job! Many thanks! I tried upgrading mine with a Corsair 2GB DDR3 1066MHz SO-DIMM module but it didn't work, so it's back to the shop. My AOD255 has an N550 chip, so I probable need the other RAM quoted elsewhere...

  • @dbauernf

@proland I managed to get it out yesterday. You might need a set of extra hands holding 2 credit cards in the F4 and the F12 pins while you stick a small screwdriver (or something like it) in the F8 pin and pry it off. I managed to pull it up just enough to stick a finger between the keyboard and the rest of the laptop, and it was easy from there.

@abobo1 For my 2010 model (AOD255E-13144), you need to remove the 2 screws on the left of the HD under the touchpad in order to FULLY open the door. Without the removal, you will BREAK the door.
Again this is for my model and not sure if its the same for others.

@michnathalie I don't think they make DDR3 667 SODIMMs, but faster ram will almost always work in a computer that requires a slower version. My DDR3 ram is 1066, but I replaced it with DDR3 1333. As long as your ram is as fast, or faster than the specified ram, it should work. You might have DDR2, if it is 667.

If you're going to upgrade the RAM on your D255, BEWARE!!! The RAM spec listed on Acer's own website may NOT reflect what your netbook needs!!!
I finally got my D255 opened and installed my 2GB PC3-8500, as listed on Acer's website. However, I started having problems with rebooting. I was stumped until I put my old 1GB back in and it worked fine.
I noticed on the 1GB RAM that came with the D255 says PC3-"10600" instead of "8500".

The clips are very fragile, and only two of mine returned to the correct position. Also, the clip on the far left, between the ESC and F1 keys is fixed, and cannot be pushed in. Once the battery is off, and the clips have been pushed in, there are two square holes one the back which can be used to push up on the upper edge of the keyboard.

how to get that keyboard lifted. those little tabs for the keyboard that you mentioned > I have 5 of them on my netbook. 1. DELETE- 2. top of F12 - 3. top of F4. 8. top of F4 and the last one 5. top of the escape key.
I popped off some keys (Del & Ins keys, lost the little thing under the key, went flying across the room; i did not even bother looking for it this stuff is so small)
any1 have a vid for keyboard off - aspire aod255E-13444.

Could you post the exact model number of the RAM you used? Or any other model of RAM that would work? Thanks!

"Just drops down". On my 257, it hardly dropped down. It was a fight all the way. Why one earth, Acer, do you make it so tricky to access common areas?
    Thanks for the vid. +

My son is going to do this upgrade for me. My unit is d255e-13647. Should I order exactly what you wrote, "Mushkin Essentials 2GB DDR2 667MHz PC2-5300 CL4 SODIMM"? Can you recommend who to order it from? Thank you.
