The Paladin is one of those classes whose core mechanic (divine smite) is just so good that there's no room to add much to the subclass. Some of the UA options we saw in the lead-up to Xanathar's and Tasha's tried to enable very different kinds of Paladins (in the same way that the Moon Druid and Hexblade Warlock fundamentally change the playstyles of their base classes) but their "radical ideas" were dialed back considerably in the final versions.
The Ranger, Fighter and Barbarian get all these wacky subclasses that let you turn into bees, or grow a tail, or use telekinetic powers. Meanwhile, the Paladin gets a few spells they'll never cast since they're using all their slots for smiting, a transformation they'll never level high enough to use, a buff to their aura which ranges from "pretty nice" to "pretty useless", and channel divinity options which inevitably fall short of providing playstyle-defining powers.

The stacking aura bonus currently works as follows:
    - Aura of Protection is a single feature, so you can only benefit from one at a time. You simply get the highest bonus available.
    - Individual subclass auras are strictly separate features, so you can get all of them if they overlap, e.g. Charm immunity from Devotion, Magic Damage resistance from Ancients, etc.
This UA, by tying the subclass aura to Aura of Protection, suggests that you will need to choose which of the subclass auras to benefit from.

in core 5e the rules state: "Different game features can affect a target at the same time. But when two or more game features have the same name, only the effects of one of them-the most potent one-apply while the durations of the effects overlap."
One interpretation of this is that RAW Aura of Protection stacks because it does not have a duration. Given that this is clearly not RAI and also kinda just problematic most DM's do not rule it that way.

      @SamFinklestein Год назад +1

@@verbatim8892 This is such a bad-faith reading in my opinion.
First of all: Aura of Protection has a very clearly specified duration: while an you are within the area and the paladin is not incapacitated.
Secondly: "While the durations of the effects overlap" is not positioned in that sentence in any way that would suggest that the "no overlap of effects with the same name" only applies to effects with a duration. It is clearly designed to ensure that the less potent effect is not negated completely, but only temporarily, in the event of an overlap.

Hi gang! Welcome back and congrats!
0:00 I love that RUclips is like "Surely you mean the hit video game of 2016 'Paladins', right?"
0:25 "TTRPG fix" doesn't seem to be flowing as well as the old "Dungeons and Dragons fix". Maybe give "Tabletop Gaming fix" a try?
3:40 I have a feeling they're planning to eliminate diseases for the most part. They might have diseases inflict the Poisoned condition as well, thereby implicitly granting the ability to Pallys?
4:40 if it remains mostly as is, I do like that the new Healer feat is level 1 and lets you reroll 1s on healing spells and its other feature. I just hope it expands to all healing rolls (e.g. for a Celestial Warlock)
6:40 Rangers also get cantrips! Also both of their spellcasting was moved to level 1. Both had a fighting style for 2 cantrips but they weren't super worth most of the time.
9:00 Regarding the "holy order vs oath" thing. I think the big thing about giving them the Divine spell list is being a really easy way to say "This is not a Warrior. This is a Priest. They are the most damaging Priest, but we want them to have all the support spell options"
15:40 In addition to what Will was saying about bows possibly not having much in the way of weapon options (assuming Paladins have access to those options and they aren't Warrior group exclusive) the other issue with a ranged paladin is their Auras. Depending on party comp, the ranged paladin might not be able to stay beside their allies. Same can be said for melee paladins in a ranged party of course, but both sides kinda have drawbacks there.
21:45 roughly. The big problem is the spell lists overlapping. How do you make Find Steed better for Paladins specifically, but not make it an exclusive spell? Give them a feature for it. It's kind of a catch 22 for Wotzy there. A Cleric or Bard can cast it at 9th level if they want, so how does it stand out for Paladin?
24:30 This one's a bit nuanced, but as far as I can tell RAW, the Paladin can use a higher level spell slot to upcast Find Steed, and then the 5th level feature makes it so that spell slot is not "expended". I remember cross checking this a while back so I can dig that up if needed. But point is Pally can once per day cast FS with their highest level slot
27:00 Controlled Mounts don't have any restrictions on Bonus Actions as far as I'm aware. You should be able to telepathically command it to use its BA just fine
28:45 Oh boy it's a call to action just for me!! Okay, there isn't too much to say since it's just a controlled mount.
--Note that it takes half your Speed to mount or dismount.
--If the mount is moved against its will (say Thunderwave) or if you're knocked Prone while mounted, make DC 10 Dex Save or fall off your mount, landing Prone. If the mount is knocked Prone, you can use your Reaction to dismount and land on your feet. Otherwise you're dismounted and Prone.
--As mentioned in the 27 minute comment, the only real restrictions on mounts are its Action: Dash, Disengage, and Dodge. Most mounts don't have Bonus Actions anyway. As far as I can tell this doesn't interact with the Bonus Action rule "Anything that deprives you of your ability to take Actions also prevents you from taking a Bonus Action" since you're not actually being deprived (the reason you can't use Bonus Actions while Incapacitated)
---Personally, I think a better general rule (and one that can work here) is to make mounts a bit more like summoned creatures. "The Mount moves as you direct, but can only take the Dash, Disengage, or Dodge Action. If you use your Bonus Action to command the Mount, it can instead take any Actions and Bonus Actions available to it. If you are Incapacitated, the Mount can take any Actions and Bonus Actions it chooses"
    ---End segment!
31:00 DMG Page 252, Combining Game Effects. If two or more features have the same name, only the most potent one applies while their effects overlap. The big problem is that "Combining Magical Effects" covers this same rule but for spells only in the PHB, and of course a lot of people never read the DMG.
32:00 Abjure Foes is the Vengeance Paladin Channel Divinity (more or less) so idk why they put it main class.
35:00 WHY NO UNARMED STIKES :( They added it to Ranged but not to Unarmed? Insert Anakin unfair meme
42:30 Still no Unarmed Strikes. It's almost like they hate the Monk/Paladin multiclass??
44:30 hmm good point, Moon Druid also "lost" the ability that the beast attacks count as magical. We'll probably tell for sure in the next UA when we get Monks.
45:10 Big agree, honestly big fan of Smite of Protection.
51:00 The segues were doing so well for a while...

For mounted combat: you can command a controlled mount to Dash, Disengage or Dodge without an action, but there is no rules support for a controlled mount having a bonus action. I would expect it to require the paladin's bonus action.

Spellcasting at 1st level now allows you to take feats that require the spellcasting feature as a v.human or custom lineage. That said I don't know if there are any such feats in 1d&d.

Don't worry M&M crew, Crawford confirmed that paladins will be able to crit smite. As someone who usually plays Druid these two coming out together was laughable. WoTC hates the druid so much it's palpable.

While I wouldnt complain too much about offensive capacity, it still scrambles my brain to hear Crawford saying Resilient and Wildshape in same sentence in positive manner while trying to justify that stupid 11th lv feature.
Have you ever played new wildshape at all, Crawford, especially alongside with new Paladin?

@@kwaksea I played the one d&d moon Druid at lv 14 (11 druid-moon/3 barbarian-ancestors) I felt like a squishy bag of hit points with punch me in flashing neon over my head.
No racial features, no class features, but it's okay my only real option (the flight shape) could cast healing word in wildshape! That's why someone would play that build right? To be a "mobile striker". It was neat being a thunder bird I guess up until the enemy had ranged options, flight, or the environment was not bird friendly.
