    Battle Priest Vs Paladin What's the Difference D&D Discussions
    Cleric Vs Paladin Original Email
    So my friends and I just started playing together. I have played on and off since 2e and have always loved the paladin. My friends have never played and only know them from the game world of warcraft and all hate them. I don't play him or her lawful stupid bc that's rude and no fun at all but that's all they here and are trying to tell me to just play a war cleric and everyone will be happy. Can you all please do a video explaining the differences between paladin and clerics and that a paladin can be played as a normal person without being a jerk to everyone? We play 5e and they have never played so the only experience they have with the dungeons and dragons paladin is what people have complained about them in the past.

      I main paladins a lot and I can get along with most characters. But sometimes it is other characters fault. Whenever there is an evil character and another character that is dedicated to slaying evil, it is hard to not get into a conflict with a warlock that is burning down an ophanage or a rouge killing npc's in thier sleep to steal their stuff. I mean don't smite your party members for petty theft or for just having an evil patron or for being a teifling.

    • @HurricaneBlade1
      @HurricaneBlade1 4 года назад +2

      The paladin kit includes both Divine Smite and Lay on Hands. *This should tell you something.*
      And yeah, if you're playing a typical good-aligned Paladin in the same party as Stabby McStabface the Chaotic Evil Assassin, someone's gonna have a bad time. At that point, the problem is at least one member of the party has the wrong expectations- if you want to have the kind of party where a more murderous and villainous PC can exist without immediately causing a PVP incident, you need to discuss that when you and your squad start making character sheets (if not sooner).
      D&D is a cooperative game. Work together, make it great.

    IMHO, Paladins are first and foremost warriors while Clerics are those who pray. Even before D&D grafted concepts onto the word Paladin, it was used to describe champions of the realm, chivalric peers, and leaders of armies. Mechanically, they will smite more than cast, lay on hands as an interim combat medic, project an aura that supports the front line, and have Charisma as their governing stat in pretty much every version of D&D. Clerics are those who pray, even if they are praying for the crushing of their foes. The width and depth of their spell casting allows them to support from the back ranks as easily as tank on the front ranks, though they are not quite as sturdy as Paladins for hit dice. They bless their allies and curse their foes where a Paladin would tend to smite foes and inspire allies. A Paladin will never be able to work miracles of the magnitude of a firestorm or a resurrection, their spell set specifically to augment their attack and defense with some minor detects to further their holy mission. And lest we forget, currently in 5th Ed, a Paladin need not be wise, only brave and strong (at least if they multi class). Wisdom remains the hall mark of a cleric. Even with sword and shield in hand, a war cleric can achieve things that a Paladin never will.

    For me, a cleric tries to actively spread a faith through preaching as well as action. Everything holds a lesson for us from the gods, and it's the cleric's job to point them out. A paladin (at least the traditional LG/Oath of Devotion kind) serves (not necessarily spreads) his faith entirely through action-no preaching, no telling others what they can and can't do, just doing what needs to be done. By being an example to others, the paladin encourages goodness, whether tied to a deity or not. Protecting good people and bringing justice to the wicked are ends in and of themselves.
    Paladins are often called upon to be a negotiator, a face. When taking this role, I like to remember a quote attributed to Gen. James Mattis (you don't have to like him to get this): "I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, I’ll kill you all."

    With how 5th ed described the cleric, I've interpreted it as the cleric is the tool of a god. The god gives the cleric whatever domain within its purview it chooses to serve a particular purpose. As a result, the paladin is the class that knows exactly what they fight for. They have specifically chosen their task, while the cleric is chosen for it.
    As a result, I currently have one cleric who is a genuine plaything of the gods. He is the reluctant hero, thankful that the gods gave him some power to heal beyond what he could. But he'd still feel like the gods are pulling him towards whatever purpose they have planned for him.

    • @whiskeyhound
      @whiskeyhound 7 лет назад

      I like the cleric idea, I'd probably make it more like Rincewind where he'd rather be at home lazing around but knows that he's gonna get dragged to where he's needed regardless of what he chooses, so he travels to where he's needed to avoid being kidnapped or teleported halfway across the world or whatever other way the gods can think of to get him there.

    I would love to play at a table consisting of a Paladin and Cleric that worship the same god. The RP potential between these two is immense and in the hands of a good roleplayer would be amazing to see develop, considering that these two classes have similar, yet different priorities.

      Well, that's our table! Dragonborn Paladin and Dwarf Cleric of Bahamut. Dwarf was wronged by clerics of Moradin in his backstory but healed by Clerics of Bahamut which is where our two characters meet. I wouldn't call us good role players just yet though. We are just starting out.

      I play a sidekick cleric next to my younger brother's flamboyant paladin. We are both Lathander followers and human. The RP has been fantastic, yet we still get opportunity to swing glaive and spear. From the same temple, it makes it super easy for direction from the DM. Loving it!

      ran a game AGES ago where i was a cleric and my buddy was a paladin and we both served under a god of justice, the shit the wrecked was stupid, almost every fight consistred of him being front line with me RIGHT behind him keeping him alive and getting a cheap hit with my hammer...fun note was the DM allowed our hand to be branded with our God's icond, allowing us to cast with out hands full at a semi weaker state (which meant there was plenty of times the paladin with a two hander would suddenly lay on hands me, or my cleric with a crossbow/shield would suddenly smite whatever was about to hit my paladin...damn that was fun!

    I am currently playing a Warpriest, a class from the Advanced Class Guide. It would bed interesting for you guys to do a comparison between the Warpriest and Paladin. I'm really enjoying my Warpriest, he has less spellcasting than a regular Cleric (but still more than a Paladin),and he gets Blessings and Fighter feats in return. I think it is a great compromise.

    It's funny, I had this image in my head for a Paladin, in personality and strength of faith, that I've been using as a baseline as I work on a character. (Pathfinder, but still, the video still applies.) It had not occurred to me until I saw this video that this baseline was, in fact, Michael. My favourite character in those novels.

  • @gaAssault34
    @gaAssault34 6 лет назад

    Something I will say. I've been a fighter in a campaign that had both. And we made the biggest three way tag team between the support from the cleric, me(great weapon fighter), and our pally. The pally was an amazing guy. Essentially played Michael to a T and it was a beautiful thing to behold. He kinda kept my guy in line(had some serious blood knight tendencies) and was able to eventually save my guy figuratively and literally.

    I’ve gone 5 levels as War Priest of Tempus ... now moving into Paladin of the Red Knight (exarch of Tempus). Going to see how that works out. Became a little disillusioned with the politicking, pompousness and error prone hierarchy of the church proper ( too many individuals serving themselves instead of helping the people ) ... and decided that maybe a more hands on approach would work better :).
    I love a good RP’d campaign where you can try things like that out.

    So, I actually played a vengeance paladin that was chaotic good, but I gave him the flaw that he tends to fly off the handle and loose himself in the moment. One thing he ended up doing was after killing a goblin in one lucky hit he hoisted its impaled but still living body above his head, and jerked it up and down showering in the goblins blood while killing it is an extremely painful and gruesome manner. This is a perfect example of humanizing a character, and role playing a characters flaw which is surprisingly rare for people to do I find.

    Lawful neutral Dwarven Warpriest of Torag.
    My father is a high ranking Forgepriest who currently lives in Highhelm with my my mother. My mother was the only daughter of a successful (not quite noble in terms of wealth or power, but upper middle class I suppose?) merchant.
    After finishing my training in the temple, I decided the best way to worship Torag was to become a caravan leader for my family. While I am in Highhelm, I spend my time in the great forges crafting armor and weapons which I will then sell in foreign markets. Quite a few bandits have underestimated the troupe of 4-6 Dwarves guarding the two wagons.
    The last thing most see is Rothgar Clefthammer, weaving his way through battle with the most beautiful greatsword they have ever seen, rending limbs from bodies and leaving a trail of death in his wake. As he gets closer, the tang of superheated metal fills your nose. The temperature rises and you begin to sweat profusely, but it doesn't burn. If they could read the silver inlaid Dwarven runes on his armor, they would understand that they face an avatar of Torag. His forge become flesh.
    "Forged by Fire. Quenched by Faith"
    *sorry if this was dumb and or long winded yall. I just started my first campaign ever two weeks ago and I'm having a blast with it :D *

    Inflict wounds, melee spell attack, 3d10 into a bonus action weapon attack 1d8 as a war cleric >.> that is at level 1. At level 14, Inflict wounds for 9d10 necrotic and a bonus action weapon attack for 1d8+2d8 radiant and if any of that would miss at level 14 nope it didn't +10 to hit that is not even taking into consideration concentrations spells like spirit guardians being up at the same time. I really think you guys might be underestimating how quick a war domain cleric could handle themselves.

    This reminds me, I just recently had a fun idea for a paladin.
    Character is in training, he does average or even above average in physical training but when it comes to the whole faith thing, they just can't seem to use the faith magic/miracles/third alternative name. As a result they get taken out of training to go self-reflect and/or find their faith. They end up meeting and old friend whom they've not seen in years, he tells his friend about is problem. His friend who has become more magically inclined tells him to try a different method instead of just praying (i.e. summoning/some form of magical communication instead of prayers). Being desperate, thinking its their last shot at becoming a fully fledged paladin, tries it. It works, however not quite as you would expect. Instead of communicating with something from his religion/deity he contacts a different deity thinking its his.(I was thinking Norse for my own go with this idea) He does earn his paladin abilities, graduate the academy/order training camp, then as he is sent out on a crusade or whatever journey he continues conversing with this deity, he slowly changes his armor to better reflect his (new)god's will, doesn't even realize he is converting to this other religion. But by the time he does realize this isn't the deity he thought he was worshiping, he is already converted and doesn't even care, be gladly accepts his new deity. And thus the Viking-Paladin is born!
    Side note: I didn't mention it but their smite would of instead being like holy fire when they strike would totally be lightning and other similar thematic things. Mechanically the same but thematically almost completely different. (You know unless the DM also loves the idea and lets me hurl lighting bolts around instead of smites)

  • @poxous3854

    I see a war cleric wanting to buff before battle, mend weapons and armor after, burying dead warriors you come across in the game and honoring them, trying to get the group to honor the war gods before conflict. Maybe he has a conflict over magic and it's place in battle and he struggles to overcome that. He might look down on the wizard and look up to a sneaky assassin. The Paladin is on a mission or oath. They are faces/leaders and not dedicated to the 'art of war' per say. As a war cleric I'd pray for the orcs I just slew because they died in combat bravely. Again, honoring the dead, battlefield would be places for the war cleric to be in awe at. I don't see these at the same at all.

    I am currently playing a Goliath Berserker/Paladin. Started level 3 (2/1), is currently level 8 (3/5). He values life and nature. As such he never uses lethal damage unless he's raging, and he only rages when he feels that an innocent or friendly life will be taken otherwise.
    He's never been around other paladins, and he doesn't really have a conscious knowledge of his powers. He heals and smites instinctually based off of his love of life an's nature and his need to protect it. He never formally "took" an oath, but he lives the oath of the ancients so completely that his powers simply manifested.
    Similarly, he walks the path of the totem warrior, as his ancestors.
    Naturally, as a Goliath, he loves competition and fair fights. He's very confident, but very polite. He seeks to inspire courage and action in all he meets so that they can learn to live life as he does.

    I've played a Dragonborn Paladin of the Ancients up to 12th level and am now playing an 8th-level War Cleric of Tempus. The major difference is that the Paladin uses his spell slots to smite when he rolls a critical, stands beside the Barbarian give shield protection disadvantage versus enemy attacks, and then heals damage after the combat is over. The Cleric has a wide range of spell choices to deal damage or heal and also has Channel Divinity abilities including Turning Undead but he doesn't really deliver damage to the same level as the Paladin. Paladins use their auras to protect those nearby while Clerics cast utility spells for varied situations.

    Both classes have their individual specialties that when played right can easily solo-carry a party(if not break a DM's sanity. Done it multiple times.). Saying that one is useless or one-sidedly dismissing them is the height of absolute fallacy that short-changes the community as a whole.
    Both have their purposes in RP and Gameplay(which everyone has their own opinions own, I'm not gonna argue that) and it boils down to the individual skill and knowledge that we as a Community(Players, Forever DM's, and In-between's included) bring into and breathe life into our game that we all know and love.
    Though Personally I truly love Paladin(as a DM and Player) when it's played with flair...
    Smite is always the correct answer, if you're creative enough.

    I play a war cleric of the Red Knight, and I roleplay like a warlord. I enjoy the spellcasting versatility over the paladin. While I love what the paladin brings to the game, I enjoy making every encounter my own challenge rather than standing in the front and smitihg everything I can see. Both are fun for the right players!!

    how about War Cleric vs Life Cleric: as combat medics?

  • @captainkiwi77
    @captainkiwi77 3 года назад

    At least role play wise a good way to differentiate the two is that a paladin is a follower of a religion and their job within that following is to fight for their cause, a war priest... their religion is war, what they warship encourages the tenants of combat and everything in that vein of conflict. A paladin could just be a follower of a life god or a storm god and their job is to fight for said deity or church or divine concept or whatever your paladin serves they don’t have to be craving combat and smiting and all that jazz, they’re just a soldier for their god and their food doesn’t have to be promoting those attributes, a war cleric warships a war deity. So that’s gonna be your always ready to fight, craves conflict, probably a little less moral style of character. Like a war cleric is probably a little more likely to be hyper hard core, you don’t have to play your paladin like that.
    The war cleric in currently running is a half orc who was formerly a costal raider until the authorities finally caught up with him and he went to jail only to find religion in jail, so he’s like one of those people who go to prison and come out being hyper Christian, however because he found a war deities religion, this means he holds values such as survival of the fittest, pain creates stronger people, it pays to be a winner, and that you should always strive to be the strongest version of yourself. He’s definitely anti participation trophy, but worse than that is his encouraging of conflict, since he believes conflict brings out the best in people ame it is a holy and cathartic moment to engage in conflict of any kind. So like right now the parties fine with him but wait till they find him starting under ground fighting rings, or encouraging people to salve problems through physical conflict, to him that’s perfectly noble but... maybe not to everyone else

    I mean I think the main difference is priorities. For example the goal of a cleric is bolster their gods followers and do their work. A paladin does what they believe supports an ideal perhaps in the name of certain gods. Also depending on the type of god you worship as a cleric it is very easy to be a "I am divine unlike you filthy urchins go repent and then we may speak" where I see a paladin as being "Come to me those who are down trodden and weary may you rest tonight and in the morning we fight for this city and the victory in the name of the light!"
    This is all opinion and I dont even know if it makes sense but yea.

      I actually had the same idea for one where when people ask him for healing he simply says "Maybe next time you should fight better and then my god would not have to make up for your short comings"
      Of course he would still heal people but begrudgingly as he would see his powerful god as someone who should decimate enemies first and heal the wounded later. There are lots of ways to be a dick and still fall under a god where as paladins follow an oath that forces them to follow certain ideals.

    War cleric steps on itself as you advance in levels. Your domain spell spiritual weapon will often over take the use of War Priest feature. Channel Divinity: War God's Blessing will better serve a martial charcter than, Channel Divinity: Guided Strike will do for your underwhelming weapon attacks. Your Avatar of Battle will over take the need to cast your domain spell stoneskin on yourself.
    Both Forge and Tempest can produce more affective features that remain viable at higher levels. They also can substitute in half of the war domain spells since, they are already on the cleric spell list.
    Both of these domains get heavy armor and martial weapon proficiency at level 1.

    Paladins scale well enough into the late game melee wise whilst the war cleric falls off in melee. Their spells basically take over their role as time goes on. So they might be dmg dealers with their spells but those 5 extra attacks aren't doing much at later levels when the fighter is rocking 3+ attacks per round and the pally 2-3 normally with smites or spell smites.

    • @IscapePVPOwning
      @IscapePVPOwning 5 лет назад

      you don't play a war Cleric without dipping into Fighter 3rd level to get Eldritch Knight, and using Green flame blade, since green flame blade scales from character overall level, not class level. thus allowing the Damage to scale hugely with War priest and many other holy damage hitting spells cleric has to add on-top of the melee, this out dps a paladin, a paladin could dip into fighter too, but for RP thats kinda gonna be a difficult thing, since they are a holy fighter them selves. so really only way to get it might be dip in wizard or sorc but im not sure, but thats how you create a DPS cleric that reks any pally in dmg.

    I’ve never liked the concept that D&D clerics don’t need a deity but instead have a concept/domain that they draw power/spells from. I believe it’s a side effect of the various gods in whatever campaign setting your playing in not having a well developed structure / religious doctrine for there various gods. Also players mistakenly believe that they must follow whatever poorly defined dogma that does exist to the letter. This is false so long as the player more or less follows the core tenets of there god it will work out.

    In general it bugs me how clerics get so much focus on fighting skills. In my opinion a cleric should come closer to a Priest in WoW. Not in armor and with heavy weapons, more of a spell focused person dressed in robes, like a divine wizard. And then only a few of them, like the war cleric, get to run around with heavy armor and martial weapons.

    • @KingCreepa
      @KingCreepa 7 лет назад +5

      Well that is what their god would want them to do. The fact is clerics of war are given powers that help them fight. Same goes with life, nature, and knowledge. Each cleric is of a different god and follows different rules/traditions granting them powers their gods deem fit. Also clerics are incredibly spell focused even war clerics normally spend most of their turns casting spells because that is their primary ability. Clerics are a full caster and I see nothing wrong with them having martial abilities because they also never get multiattack.

      nostalgiclecture I don't agree with that. In a current campaign I play a cleric of Kelemvoor. He doesn't preach, he doesn't force his believes on the group. Gothar (his name) knows that he knows more and cares more about the dead and what an abomination undead are, than his party members. By his actions and a few words he shows them his believes and they respect him and he respects them. The paladin of the Morninglord was very suspicious of Gothar at first but now they are a fierce team versus the forces of evil.

    I play my War Cleric as a Tempest Cleric. Tempest and War are about mechanically same.
    She's essentially a samurai suited tempest cleric of Japanese descent transported to another world through a magic portal in her family's temple. She calls upon the power of Ryujin.
    She's been called Team Mom (for being the only healer and me constantly motherly advising everybody) and Teen Mom (She's 18 during the sessions time).
    I play her as someone who knows nothing of the world she is in. this is an adventure and learning experience for her. She is very quite, kind, caring, and speaks only when she know she must. Here actions present all of her beliefs and personality. And when she does, her words carry a great weight.
    She can also one shot shit with thunder and lightning magic. lol
    plus booming blade for thematic effect. xD

    Most of the time I hear paladins can have faith can serve a diety...but the option is never truly explored "what if they Don't follow a diety or religion"?
    A scientist elf oath of ancients paladin sage. Upholds tradition, but studies all, and not in a phylosophical way, but more akin to how an astrophysics views a big ball of dirt: with pure interest. Upholding tradition and moral good but being curious of the greater cosmos...while it definitely it'd be hard to RP, I think it'd be interesting to say the least. I sure wouldn't do it, but there's the option.
    For example we could just remove my conquest hexadins god from the mix...and nothing would change...well aside from if the GM would pay more attention, she would have to perform various acts to uphold her pact with a divine entity.

    i always imagines them simply as, a Paladin is a spellcasting warrior and a Cleric is a melee spellcaster, they can fold into eachothers roles, like a tanky cleric or a healy paladin, but they will NEVER out preform their other half if they where to max into that (if thats confusing, a tank cleric will never out tank a tank paladin, and vice versa)
    hell even that being said clerics can be...weird...unlike Paladins which HAVE to be lawful good, fighters of the holy orders...clerics can be the hand of...ANY god, if you had a neutral party? theres a neutral cleric, if you had a good party? theres a good cleric! hell, if you even had a EVIL party, you can have a cleric. each would be dramatically different from one another but they fill this role in my head where they support the team with their spells, but arn;t that afraid to rush into melee when needed.

    Paladins have divine smite, clerics don't

  • @mikegould6590
    @mikegould6590 7 лет назад

    Mechanically, the two classes are different.
    As stated by others, one is a holy WARRIOR, whereas the other is a warlike PRIEST. One has more martial abilities, and the other has more spell abilities. Paladins focus their abilities on what they do in close combat, whereas the Cleric can eventually gain access to high level spells. Paladins are champions of a CAUSE, Clerics are champions of a GOD. Paladins can absorb more damage, whereas Clerics can heal more damage. No Cleric can Smite, but no Paladin can gain Divine Intervention outside of House Rules.
    A great Paladin from film is Ardeth Bay from The Mummy (played by Oded Fehr), or pre-Hydra Captain America, whereas you could look at Magneto as a very high level War Cleric. All lead from the front, but have different methods.
    I also have to say that I do not agree with the belief that Clerics (Especially War) are a support-only concept. War Clerics lead by example, like Light Clerics or Tempest Clerics. They represent passionate views from passionate gods, and stay on no ones shadow. I have a concept for an (unwilling) Half Orc cleric of Gruumsh, and I can assure you that the the role has to played from the very front of any issue. Clerics of gods like Kord, Thor, Horus-Re, Tyr, and the like are NOT going to sit in the back and cast Healing Word. They are going to have loud opinions and express direct thoughts, followed by direct actions.
