  • The bard is an artisan of magic, knowledgeable and witty musicians and warriors capable of lethal arts. Paladins are champions of holy power, heralds of their faith and smiters of the unrighteous through divine favor and martial prowess. Put them together and we get a divine chorus leader who inspires their supporting singers while triumphantly smiting the wicked. Grab your songbook and put on some heavy armor as we go through everything you need to know.

Currently playing Mountain Dwarf Valor Bard 4/(Crown) Paladin 1.
Build came up organically through campaign narrative, not so much a pre-existing intent. Starting out as a melee Bard with Medium Armor, he was a near-frontline support PC. Leveling up to PC 5, the campaign took a turn where I had inherited a previous PC's relic plate armour (DM allowed Heavy armor Prof to avoid redundancy of two Medium Prof sources) and had a low-grade holy sword that I started with the campaign with but slowly increased power over time.
Super excited for next level-up when I get Smites. Valor Bard was a personal choice as I never liked the idea of "I sing a magic song", but the idea of a sergeant-at-arms or skald screaming across the battlefield was very appealing. The Crown Paladin choice is, again, campaign plot-driven as we now find ourselves the rulers of the town we started the campaign in. Being the character's home town, there's a lot of duty and connection to the people, so the Crown Oath is less to a person or position, and more to the ideal of the society as a whole.
Overall, I foresee the build being a fairly even blend of tank, damage, and support. Just enough of each to contribute whatever is needed, but not so focused that it conflicts with others in the party.

I'm playing a Redemption/Eloquence Palabard currently. At level 8 currently (5/3, going for 6 in pally before staying Bard), and man, that build is powerful. I'm definitely the face of the group, as well as the tank. I'm losing damage, but gaining versatility through my Bard spells and abilities. It's great, IMO.

Paladin2/BardX You will get the juicy heavy armor prof + smite and fighting style and your spell progression will be only one level behind a full caster. You'll have less hp than a paladin (probably have another front-liner in the party) and you'll only get extra attack at level 8 (Pala2/Bard6) if you take valor or swords subclass (consider taking Vuman and polearm master level 1), but you'll be a smite machine and with magical secrets you'll gain acces to high level paladin spells faster than straight paladin.

Another idea for a Bard/Paladin multiclass is go 8 straight levels of Oath of Ancients Paladin, then the rest as an Eloquence Bard. Eloquence Bard allows you to target your opponent with Unsettling Words as a bonus action, which really sets up your next spell caster to land something nasty, whilst still being able to protect the party.
You take the extra level in Paladin to get the ASI, as the spell slot progression is identical between 13/7 and 12/8 and it means you get an extra ASI. You will still get access to a 7th level slot, and your Bardic casting allows you to swap out one Bard spell for another when you level of any spell slot you have, so you will get a 7th level spell.
I also like the way you can play the character, first as a martial expression of their Oath, who transitions to be a Herald who expresses their values, and can defend themselves and their allies on the battlefield. I also see some role play synergy which an instrument playing Paladin who serves a Fey patron they have sworn their Oath to, who over time develops into a story teller and lorekeeper for their patron. I think I may have found my next character to play.

I just realized that blade flourishes give a movement bump after attacking. I'm really thinking about a hit-and-run build with a gem dragonborn Paladin 2 / Swords bard. Taking Shield of faith and going sword and board in heavy armor with defense fighting style, that's a baseline AC of 21 (chainmail) -23 (full plate mail). Then with Defensive flourish, that AC is between 22 and 29. I imagine most enemies would miss their opportunity attack at that kind of AC, so now they don't have a reaction. Find a way to slap on Booming Blade, mix in smites, and you're a freight train on the ground and a B1 Bomber with Gem Flight. Neat!

My previous character narratively had to leave the party, so I came back in with a Paladin/Bard multiclass, effectively being an inquisitor.
With Bard 3 being College of Eloquence for being able to get my minimum Persuasion and Deception rolls to be a minimum of 20, and being able to reduce a target's saving throws by 1d6 with Unsettling word, which combines perfectly with either setting up combos with teammates, or for dropping control spells like suggestion/command/etc.
Then on the Pally side, he's currently Paladin 4 Oath of Watchers, so gives heaps of great team support and helps with frontlining when needed with both Watcher's Will which gets even stronger when combined with the aura at level 6, making him into a fantastic supportive bulwark.
Great spread of combat, utility and narrative potency with CHA skills.

If you are going for smite damage college of whispers bard is also good. Depending on how many paladin levels you take you don't need the extra attack from swords bard. The psychic blades damage goes up way higher than the blade flourish in damage. No AC bonus with like you get with defensive flourish though so depends on what you want.

I'm playing a Paladin/Warlock and have had my character play in a band with the bard in the party.
I'm thinking of doing college of whispers. Was originally going to do sorcerer but who knows.
Not that I'm specifically going for this but I think the Paladin 2+/ Warlock 5/ whispers bard 3 + has the highest single attack damage in the game because you can smite + eldritch smite + psychic blades. Combine with polearm master stuff or whatever for more attacks.
If your DM allows unearthed arcana then you can take oath of treachery to add extra poison damage on there too. You could also use the curse bringer eldritch invocation instead of eldritch smite to only take 3 levels in Warlock instead of 5.
I don't even want to figure out how much damage that is but I'm pretty sure you could just kill a tarrasque by throwing a rock at them at that point. You are basically one punch man...except the smites can't use punches. Maybe use brass knuckles.

I've built a Hexbardadin as a backup character. The campaign I'm playing is currently level 6, so the split is Paladin 2/Hex 1/Bard 3, with the eventual goal of Vengeance 6/Hex 5/Swords 6+. He's Custom Lineage to start with PAM, but uses a spear (and shield) to work with Hex Warrior and Dueling fighting style. The end goal is to get advantage on all attacks from Vengeance, 3 attacks from Extra Attack and PAM, crit on 19-20, resulting in about 50% chance to crit at least once and dumping a lvl 4 Divine Smite, a lvl 3 Eldritch Smite and a Blade Flourish for 2d(4or6)+20d8+CHA damage on the big bad, while still doing decent sustained damage and supporting everyone with the auras. Did I mention his AC is 21 before magic items?

I'm not a big fan of using oath of redemption in an optimized build. Same with Peace cleric. Those subclasses are so tied to their flavor that they change your playstyle IMO. So I'm going for something else. Since we're going to Level 6 for the basic aura, I think I'd go oath of devotion for the sacred weapon channel divinity. And then I'd go lore bard for quicker magical secrets. Yes, that means it will require taking warcaster sooner, +5 to attack for the entire combat is just too good to pass up. At level 11, I'd take haste, probably, but maybe something else like fly. It really depends on the party makeup.
