If only Racing Lagoon had a complete translation for the story mode.
now we got fan made translation patches that are quite far in progress, you should check it out if you haven't yet
thanks for taking the time to put these up! I never knew these games existed. There were some things that stood out in some of these games. Gameplay wise I noticed that Hashiriya seemed to have the best sense of speed, while side by side special seemed to have the best smoke effects and racing environments along with average drifting mechanics.
PS1 has too many amazing racing games to play! 😄
Thanks for posting this video. I'm really into obscure Japanese racing games made before The Fast and the Furious was even a thing.

0:34-1:17 theme music could be best theme for Driver 2 Tokyo Escape at Night
Touge Max G seems to have the best looking car models i have ever seen on a psx console, along with what seems to be the best drifting mechanics, as it seems to be an enjoyment to drift in that game. Racing Lagoon seems neat because you can race at night. As far as music in the games are concerned, it seems that Side by Side Special and Racing Lagoon have the best tunes to listen to.

I consider myself a drift game digger too... actualy i had a break to search after Gran Turismo 5, but i already tried most of these that you mentioned.

Option Tuning Car Battle spec r and Touge Max G have the best physics of these imo. Option Tuning has similar smooth drift physics to Max G but less exaggerated and feels more realistic
Side by side is pretty good. The car mechanics remind me a little of some need for speed game where the drift automatically occurs once you hit the brake button. There's also Wangan trial, Shotukou Battle R and straight victory. Not sure when you gave Option tuning a lower score since you can mod your car and the steering is between simulation and arcade.

BTW have you played Initial D PSX?
Advan Racing has a really interesting feature, during races you can change driver during pit stops and you can make the AI drive your car, kind of like what Gran Turismo made with the B-Spec mode many years later. You can even give your AI the order to speed up or slow down depending on what tyre and fuel strategy you have in mind.
That's pretty much what FIA-GTR 2 had years prior.

Actually, I played Advan Racing and did't think the physics is bad...
Lol the first JZX100 sounds better than in gt5
it raised the same question for me.
but i didn't make it past that first event because i can't read japanese, who knows maybe you end up highway racing after that.
