  • With the release of the Dreamcast in 1998 Sega needed a lot of launch titles for it's new console, and in this bunch of titles there was a studio called Genki who have made a racing game focused on the 90's illegal street racing scene in Japan called Tokyo Xtreme Racer!

My favorite isn't a mainline series TXR, it's Racing Battle: C1 Grand Prix.
It blends the best part of TXR with regular circuit races.
There's a reputation system to encourage clean driving (kind of like Enthusia).
The tuning is great, so is the car selection.
There's also a neat offline chat, full of hints and banter between the racers (but you need to speak Japanese).

Idk how it is in this game, but in later tokyo xtreme racer games, you can’t just challenge anybody, you have to complete the most random requirements like, they only spawn every 3 days and only when there is lightning, or between 2 and 4 am but only if you have done more than 1243 miles in total, etc. This kind of makes it hard to track and sometimes frustrating.

    • @yori13
      @yori13 Год назад +13

Actually, you can challenge almost anybody without those requirements. It's just that there is a very specific group of rivals called Wanderers, all of which have a unique requirement such as the one you said. And you can unlock all the bosses and credit roll scenes, except one, without defeating any of the Wanderers. In short you can complete the basic objectives of the game for the most part without ever challenging the Wanderers.
But it's true that if you want to defeat the Wanderers it's hard to track, or rather impossible for some of them. There are online guides listing all the requirements and those are necessary to complete the entire rival roster

@@yori13exactly, and entries like TXR Drift 2 absolutely CRUEL in how tough it is to 100%. The last stage, Hokkaido, has insane requirements for getting some rivals to appear, like “only appears on the 3rd Wednesday of the month when stormy, but after defeating rivals 332, 328, and 247, and only if you have at least 38 prizes” lol. It’ll make you want a straitjacket, but that’s what makes it fun to me, is the challenge of finding everyone to battle.

Neat, an episode on the touge racers of the 90s. I'm definitely up for more videos about them, since it isn't often we hear or see much about them nowadays, as largely a niche genre that, while never truly vanishing, it has remained a niche nonetheless.
I've not played the very first games in this series, but I did Zero, 3, and Drift (Drift wasn't really my cup of tea, though, so I didn't get too far. I'm more of a fan of the Underground games, Carbon, and Initial D style of things in that regard), with 3 as my absolute favorite, with its fairly decent and expansive highway system, and also having the best physics in the series (not counting the Drift games here), and likely the fairest AI too, especially compared to 3. They were relatively simplistic games, but the performance and tuning system does get a fair bit more depth in the later titles, raising the overall complexity.
Going forward, the other TXR and Wangan Midnight games is what I'd like to see more of. And since apparently Asetto Corsa has some mods for this, that can easily work too, I keep hearing that modding is what makes that game so good. And of course, perhaps some discussion video about Night Runners, as the upcoming game does have a fair bit of footage out, especially the customizstion and tuning side of things.

It was one of my favorite racing games I've played. I've also played other SB games, such as Shutokou Battle 0, which was a great game for PS2 by Genki. Genki also developed the Kaido Battle series, focusing on touge racing. What I love about the original SB/TXR game for Dreamcast, was the boss cars which are actually pretty cool, like Red Devil's Skyline GT-R. I love the S30 driven by ???/Unknown as the final boss from the 4 Devils gang, being a reference to the Devil Z from Wangan Midnight, as well as his bio from the game about him who was once a legend 10 years ago and was rumored as a ghost. Surprisingly, his car had a Stage 4 engine, but that would be interesting if the car had a Stage 5 engine as well as suspension, chassis and drivetrain having Stage 4 upgrades too, which can make a battle with him challenging.
I also did loved some other Shutokou Battle games, as for Shutokou Battle 0, it is a pretty interesting game which I've played. It's also good that Peugeot did also made an apperance in SB2 and SB0, with the 306. The French brand was originally going to be in SB01 with the 406 and the 206, but was cut for unknown reasons, probably due to licensing issues, while Peugeot is alright with their cars used in street racing games like Need for Speed: Underground and Juiced with the 206. So, why not Genki should have made it not unused, but rather being in the original SB01 as playable, and add the aero parts for the 206, such as the replica of the 206 WRC version. That would be nice if I'd love to use a WRC version of a 206, on a Metropolian Expressway in a Shutokou Battle game.

Thank you for covering TXR series, it is pretty niche in term of relevancy with modern racing games, but compared to other games back in the time, it was pretty raw (for me) and closest thing that cover (actual) japanese street racing scene back in 80s and 90s. While some newcomer may thinking it is pretty basic in term of gameplay (you race, unlocks stuffs/buy them, race and progress rinse repeat), yet the gameplay loop feels satisfying, and requirement of tuning your car (on TXR2, Zero, 3 and Drift Series) to makes best out of your car is rewarding if you into tuning your car setup, even I may argue the later games feels arcade with a bit of simulation as tuning is obligatory to win.
While nowadays WMMT probably the closest thing we can get for wangan racing genre, imo it not really scratch the itch (maybe because I never had system near me), closest thing to experience this game is through console (if you had the system) or Emulation.
The main series captures C1 & surround Bayshore route roads and expands them with Nagoya and Osaka highway loop in TXR3. Although I never yet found a game that try to portray Tomei highway racing scene, maybe it will be forgotten yet it was one of the first place in the scene before most of racer (and Mid Night team) moved into Tokyo especially Bayshore route.
Rivals feels simple yet their bio tells a micro-story that makes each rivals feel unique, although as some other comment stated, some wanderer on later games have specific set of requirement to make them accept/challenge you to battle. Since I never tried The first game, I don't think Genki games have any rubberbanding AI (not sure for Unknown/??? S30), since most of rivals car performance stats is explicitly stated and "does" make sense although some moment you may faced with a wall which you need to tune your car specificly to defeat your rival. This apparent when you faced rival with higher hp/weight ratio and better handling and your car underpowered and handle like shit, other strategy on later game is by lure the said rival into C1 which have more slower road speed.
Overall, this game series is great if you're into highway racing and Mid Night shenanigan.

@DoVe_7 yes!! I recommend the crx and the Honda city as your starter car. The drift races can be kind of hard in fwd, but with a little practice it gets pretty easy. Also, make sure you do your sponsor challenges and put the stickers on the car for more money. You'll have to rearrange the stickers as you get more more sponsors since they pay out different based on where they are located. Can't wait for your playthrough dude!

TXR 1 to TXR Zero's handling is very unusual in general. When turning, you don't exactly turn as much as rotate the car around. To actually go through the corner, you'll need to hit the gas. While at first this sounds like the general slow in fast out you'd expect out of most racing games, the fact of the matter is that this is taken very literally. You literally do not have any worthwhile movement unless you hit the gas, leading to the general style of this era of TXR to require accelerating while braking when cornering after taking enough time to brake normally. This gives you both rotation and allows you to actually start cornering rather than understeer into a wall. Granted in TXR 1 the understeer is quite severe, but this will be the rule to stick to for TXR 2 and TXR Zero as well if you get to them. Once Genki started making TXRD 1, the handling moved to a more "simcade" sort of deal that would allow for a lot of Forza/GT muscle memory to apply decently.
Another thing to note is that contrary to what was said in the video, rubberbanding in TXR is surprisingly minimal if you take into account rival car stats. The reason you get completely obliterated by some opponents but not others is because said opponents have a crapload of upgrades on there and Genki isn't putting handicaps on performance. Deva/Devil cars also tend to have considerably more power and seemingly better handling than the equivalent car when upgraded, leading to situations where you are at a performance disadvantage. This is where the difference between driver skill and even tuning matters as well as choosing where to start racing on the C1 Loop (going on that eastern section that's wide and straight is worse for you than if you went in the twistier western section). There's even some opponents that seem to have really strong cars early on, but they are driven by idiots and so end up much easier to deal with than expected.
Finally the difference between International and Japanese versions do matter when comparing TXR games, especially TXR 1. Shutokou Battle lacks the Deva/Devil car unlocks entirely, leading to a slightly harder early-mid game. Yet for reasons unknown to me, I can unlock the S30 in Quest Mode early on, though this might be because I might have done something weird by accidentally playing Quick Battle for one opponent by accident. Even then, the S30 is the most expensive car to upgrade, and even if the S30 unlocked on my playthrough is some weird mistake, you still have the 930 as a very strong alternative. It helps that those two cars seem to be the most agile, but when you crash that engine just lurches insanely hard. Shutokou Battle also has, for whatever reason, some netplay capability that seems oddly cool in concept especially for 1999. With other TXR games you'll find that certain rival names and bios get changed (the P in P. Suzuki means something weird and the like) and entire cars go missing for various reasons between JP and International.

It seems like a game that would be fun for 45 minutes to an hour, and then you would stop playing it, don't think I could bring myself to play this game for longer than that at any time because of the rather bland map that it presents because of what the game is supposed to be, and for me, the battles just seem like an expanded outrun race from NFSU2.

I've played through TXR 2 once. It is as Dreamcast jank as a game can be, my god:
    - No way to reverse if using Automatic. You can only turn yourself around by driving against the wall.
    - No rear view option. You have to switch to bumper camera in order to get a rear view mirror. Zero on PS2 later added.. a bumper cam button, not a proper rear view.
    - Car degradation occurs outside of races, so you can overheat your car and destroy the tires before reaching your rival.
    - The rivals spawn in a specific order even if you have beaten the other rivals in the line, meaning the one you need to beat can be at the very end of the road, only a little away from the despawn area.
    - Hitting a wall slows you down, but not the AI resulting with the opponents wall riding often.
    - The AI doesn't understand that you cannot drive to restricted zones, and thus they will drive there during races or even during autopilot.
    - Autopilot in general can cause you to crash or end up down the wrong road before the race has even begun.
    - The final boss gives you about 3000 credits. I sort of like the low income in the game, as it forces you to really think about what to buy and when, but this way beating any major bosses doesn't feel that rewarding.

I 100%'d Zero on the PS2 a few months ago. Which is this game updated for the PS2. Ultimately, these aren't good games. They're only worth playing if you get a kick out of exploring the Japanese highway systems in virtual form for the first 5 hours or so of gameplay with lower tier cars. The concept is intriguing but ill executed and the games are literally unchanged all the way to xtreme racer 3.
Absolute ball busting. Even on PCSX2 with the extra precision of deadzone skips for more precision. The handling model looks to be completely unchanged from this to Zero. Once cars get 1000+ HP to beat the final guys you NEED to use a 4WD car. The Viper for instance is impossible to drive. I had to use it for one single race to beat a wanderer and it's impossible to keep straight. And I am not a novice. The handling model is BAD. You are basically constantly drifting and turning controls the angle of the car, but the cars barely turn. And if the angle gets too much you spin out. There are no real driving dynamics between the drive types. This tendency is simply the strongest for MR, then FR, then 4WD. FF actually kind of feel like front wheel drive cars and honestly, drive the best out of everything in the game. I used the EG hatch for the first 2 areas and was able to keep up with great handling but I simply couldn't keep using it. You NEED top speed to win these events (which isn't really a complaint, that's the whole point of a wangan game).
Then I moved to Kaido battle and was pleasantly surprised to find that the handling model in that game was actually REALLY good. Was very satisfying and felt somewhat like Gran Turismo 3. But the game quickly bored me due to other reasons. I then moved to Xtreme Racer 3 hoping that they improved the handling, but was disappointed to find it's COMPLETELY UNCHANGED. And not just the handling model, but the city, the racers, the teams, the game progression, everything.
For that reason, if you feel like playing these, I'd almost recommend playing Xtreme Racer 3. Because it's literally the same game with more cars and better graphics. However, I will say the music in Zero is better.
I just don't understand their thinking with these. Why have this super drifty handling model on your SUPER HIGH SPEED highway battle game, and the really quite realistic one on your KAIDO BATTLE game? You've proven you can do both and you use them on the wrong games.
