I miss late 80s/90s shows like "Monsters", "Tales from the Darkside", "The Outer Limits" and, of course, "Tales from the Crypt". There's something about the practical effects and the cheesy video effects that just pushes all the right nostalgia buttons for me. Thanks for sharing, James! :)
One of my favorite episodes is the one about the a guy who dies but it turns out he's still alive but can't move or speak and he has to sit through his own autopsy, feeling everything that's being done to him. That is such a terrifying concept and it gave me the chills!
@@timexi5704 You have a good point. However, in Abra Cadaver, the man THINKS he's dead, due to the effect of the drug that his drink was laced with. With You, Murderer, the man's brain is indeed working, although, to the outside world, and by all appearances, he definitely SEEMS to be dead. Both You, Murderer and Abra Cadaver are very well put-together stories...at least, in my opinion. Would you agree, or disagree?
I just stating watching some of them on youtube after watching Twilight Zone and 90's Outer Limits. My 2 fav so far are Yellow ( a masterpiece ) and Aba Cadavear
Unless I'm having a brain fart, there was also a small show called Monsters I think in the 80s that I loved. Unless I'm confusing titles I'm pretty sure it was called that. Some real Twilight Zone-eque stuff there.
Tales from the dark side is awesome! My college art professor did the monster special effects and set design for the show. Good stuff! The movie is cool too.
My family and I would watch this show all the time back in the 90's when it was on tv still. It always tripped me out as a kid but I still loved it. That part when the keeper pops up in the coffin always had me on edge, I always had to brace myself for it and knew it was gonna happen every time.
Great list. Did you know there was a Tales from the Crypt anthology movie from 1972? It had the original version of All Through the Night starring Joan Collins. Also, had a tale starring Peter Cushing in it. Got it in a 2 DVD set with the Vault of Horror from 1973. Sadly, that film was only available as a tv edited version, so they used stills in a couple spots to remove gore. Still an excellent watch with an impressive cast of actors who played in lots of other Amicus productions.
I saw that movie several months ago. Very horrific, and each of those people sitting there were eventually cast into Hell for their wickedness. A totally morbid movie, indeed!
The great thing about this show is how everyone has a favorite episode, and they’re all so enjoyable in their own way. This show deserves a release on streaming so it can get love from old and new generations.
my fav ep is the college ep were the pledges have to go inside this haunted house and impress the girls and turns out that the girls are dead and chop them up with chainsaw and eat them
One of my friends as a kid used to have some episodes on VHS ^^ Scared the shit out of me.. didn't help that he lived in a house surrounded by woods, making it a creepy location too. Had to go rewatch the 'cutting cards' one on RUclips - hahaha can't belive I was scare of this! It's soo cheesy! :D
I love that yellow was featured in hear, it may not have been a typical tale from the crypt, but the execution and ruthlessness of it was perfect. Definitely one of my favorites
I really liked "Death of Some Salesmen" and "Loved to Death" too, though the latter one is a bit too cliche, but the they were really funny =) "The sales men sold me a color TV that didn't work. Till I fixed it! Now it's a color TV (shows salesman body parts inside a TV)!"
Forgive me if this has been said already but the Santa one was actually a remake from the original Tales From the Crypt movie that I think came out in 1972. Definitely worth watching!
I always loved this show as a kid. It was actually on national TV in Mexico for a long time, uncensored but relegated to only night time showing, at around 11 pm. It was the coolest thing to watch alongside Are you Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps.

Just watched this hoping you had "Cutting Cards" or what I call Chop Poker on your list. Glad to see it at the top. What a classic, crazy and funny episode!
I wish you would do more reviews on these shows, I grew up watching them and it brings back memories of a lost time. I don't have time to watch these episodes again so I love watching reviews on classic stuff!
It is very difficult finding a legitimate NOSTALGIA BOX, but this was a bullseye for me! Viewed every episode from pilot on HBO as a kid. Thanx SOOO much for the memories._. 😏
GODDAMN! I watched The Third Pig when I was really young and I could never remember the name of it or how to find it! I caught the episode after the intro so I had no idea it was even a Tales From the Crypt. Thank you James! That's been driving me crazy for over twenty years.
Liberals: 'Sexism is bad and should be disavowed under any circumstance.' Liberals: 'Sexism can be acceptable if it is against a woman who doesn't share our political views.'
Remember watching this as a kid but still cared but still would watch..my step dad scared the life out of me younger..ran into the table..what memories ha
E.C used to do three or four stories an issue. Insane, right? So they ended up copying some of the stories they read. They did sign a deal with Ray Bradbury after he caught them using one of his stories, but I imagine a lot of other authors got screwed. E.C didn't have the money behind them to higher a huge staff like D.C, but I think they had the best talent pool in the industry and that showed in their work. The comic came out a few years before the Kubrick film, but one of them might have read the original novel by Cobb.
I've always loved anthology shows like Tales from the crypt. Obviously the most well known is Twilight Zone, but there's also Outer limits, Monsters, Ray Bradbury theater, Tales from the dark side, perversions of science, just to name the ones off the top of my head.
I actually really enjoyed the cartoon series. While it wasn't as violent, it was intense and rather dark at times. Also, it had some petty insightful messages.
Hey James, what about a top ten for the 80's revival of Twilight Zone? Always thought it was underestimated and there are some great episodes like the one with the woman stopping the time right before a nuclear attack. And it's even directed by Wes Craven!
mathmss, the 80's Twilight Zone was amazing! I was going to suggest James to do a top ten as well. I just watched the entire series on DVD and I loved a majority of the episodes, I will never understand the hate this series gets.
Sinjin Smyth, have you watched both the 80's and the orginal Twilight Zone recently? I found that orginal had a lot more stinkers than I remembered and the 80's has their fair share of bad episodes too. I enjoy watching both of them.
Great list. It has all my favorites. They were the ones that stand out the most to me as i havent seen the show in about 20 years. Most of the other lists ive seen are more concerned with the quality of the episodes rather than the the ones that are just plain fun and memorable. The only one i would add is the one where christopher reeves owns a restaraunt and changes his menu from squid based dishes to a certain secret ingredient that ends up being a huge hit.
I never got a chance to watch the show when it came out. My family didn't have HBO and even when I was able to watch HBO at my Grandma's house, I was too spooked. Unfortunately, by the time I was old enough to watch it, I only managed to watch Bordello of Blood, which was constantly repeated on HBO, Spike, and a few other channels.
They used to broadcast Tales from the Crypt on basic as well, and I don't know why but my mom let me watch it. I loved it so much and would cry when it was over. I was like 5 or 6.
Fucking loving the scary movie reviews and Halloween themed shows. Super awesome content new it takes a lot of work to keep these coming so fast but it's awesome
I LOVE THE SHOWS 2 BUT SOME SOME IDOT TOOK OFF THE CHILLER CHANEL SO STUPID 257 HAD THE BEST HORROR MOVIES & SHOES EVER!!!! HATE THEY TOOK OFF!!!! I LOVE HORROR MOVIES STHEPEN KING MY FAV!!!
Hey James have you ever heard of the show Amazing Stories? I think what it is... it takes a while to upload long videos. He probably starts uploading around 11pm or something and then it finalizes around 3 or 4 in the morning.
You can publish a video whenever you want without doing anything, just set the date and time and it does its thing on its own. A lot of RUclipsres upload super late. John Oliver, A Dose Of Buckley, GameSack. Probably has to do with their audience, maybe we're just up at the weirdest times.
Hold up this was on HBO??? I remember as a kid watching tales from the crypt on Fox. Did something happen that I don't know about did the series get shitty and then move to fox?

I grew up watching 80's TZ. It was great! Sure, there was quite a few stinkers, but the good ones made up for it. You really think episodes like "To See The Invisible Man", "Profile In Silver", and "Dead Run" sucked?
That one episode Loved To Death had a similar storyline with The Twilight Zone episode The Chaser. The difference is the endings. In The Chaser Roger attempts to poison his wife Leila but changes his mind when she tells him she's pregnant! In Loved To Death Edward ended up poisoning himself instead of Miranda. He ends up in the afterlife shortly being joined by Miranda who killed herself by jumping out the window! He screams in torment at the thought of them being together for eternity!
THe scarriest episodes were the ones that were rehashed and shown years later with no indication from the thumbnail that it was from years ago. Wait what
Fun Fact #2: You noticed Robert Zemeckis directed "Yellow." He was such a fan of the show that he originally wrote the movie "The Frighteners" as a half hour Crypt episode with Peter Jackson. Jackson, Zemeckis et al. set to work and decided it was worthy of a feature film only after production started.
I agree with your picks. One episode I would personally add would've been in the same season as "Yellow" was the episode "Abra Cadaver" where the bulk of it was in pov perspective. I thought it was unique for the time.
Don't forget *Freddy's Nightmares* and *Friday The 13th: The Series*
I finally went through the top 40 Outerlimits and now I am going through some of the Tales of Crypt and they are good stuff. I cannot get Darkside
What is monsters ??? Any good
Pretty much the same as Tales from the Darkside except it was called Monsters. So yeah it was good.
Very glad my father showed me this realm of cheese so that way I can keep the tradition alive until my children can carry on glorious B culture
I loved "Death of Some Salesmen" with Tim Curry on season 5 . He played all of the creepy family's members.
Schade88 I was waiting for that episode to be mentioned.
Easily the best episode
@Hammerin' Hank "Cutting Cards" is a GREAT episode. I also love "Carrion Death", just two people and one dead and one talking to himself...
I expected that to be #1 but I have no beef with this aside from that episode's absence
I remember as a kid the episode that scared me the most was Abra Cadaver. I remember having nightmares of being alive during an autopsy
My personal favorite was the lumberjack that is messing around with the bosses wife
Not Quite Ripe “split second”
Thats one of my favorites...great episode
Love me some Michelle Johnson.
I liked the episode with the Funeral Parlor. Fitting Punishment. That was scary.
Didn't that one have Ted Danson?
There was one episode called "Three's A Crowd" and boy, the twist on that one is as evil and depressing as can be.
Frightening, too, especially there at the very last!
schlumbl84 Was that the one about the man being jealous of his wife’s friend?
@@justsomeokami8867 Yep; they stay at his cabin & starts to believe that they are having an affair. He's right, it's just not that type of affair.
@@ralph8677 I thought that was the one 👍🏾
One My favorites, and the music is awesome
This show was the fucking greatest
was... still is
Your right the show just had a certain style about itself
Agreed, this is still to date my fave show... Also, the twilight zone, love them!
I liked the movie a lot too
No, MONSTERS was the greatest; Tales from the Crypt just had a lot of stars, nothing more.
One of my favorite episodes is the one about the a guy who dies but it turns out he's still alive but can't move or speak and he has to sit through his own autopsy, feeling everything that's being done to him. That is such a terrifying concept and it gave me the chills!
That would be "You, Murderer". Excellent episode!
@@ronaldshank7589 Don't think so, I re-watched the series recently and the aforementioned plot was in Abra Cadaver

Much appreciation for not spoiling the endings
One of the best shows of all time
PJ thats awesome. Wish we did that in school.
I just stating watching some of them on youtube after watching Twilight Zone and 90's Outer Limits. My 2 fav so far are Yellow ( a masterpiece ) and Aba Cadavear
Tales from the crypt, Creepshow movies, Tales From the Dark Side, and Werewolf scared the shit out of me as a kid. Classic 80's all the way!!
tales from the crypt came out in 89 so i would barley call it a 80 shows
Unless I'm having a brain fart, there was also a small show called Monsters I think in the 80s that I loved. Unless I'm confusing titles I'm pretty sure it was called that. Some real Twilight Zone-eque stuff there.
Tales from the dark side is awesome! My college art professor did the monster special effects and set design for the show. Good stuff! The movie is cool too.
Hell yeah I miss Werewolf which aired on Fox. That was my shit.
Werewolf?
The episode "Yellow" is essentially the Stanley Kubrick movie "Paths of Glory," which Kirk Douglass is also in.
I'll have to check that out.
Tales from the crypt raised me
I just love the crypt keeper
yes, i saw every episode back in the 90's when I was a kid on HBO.....miss those days...
Where were your god damn parents? They just abandoned you in front of the tv when a horror show was playing?
you gave me quite the raise... in the pants
Papa’s maybe.
My family and I would watch this show all the time back in the 90's when it was on tv still. It always tripped me out as a kid but I still loved it. That part when the keeper pops up in the coffin always had me on edge, I always had to brace myself for it and knew it was gonna happen every time.

"The Switch" and "Yellow" are my two favorites.
I wish Yellow were a full-length film.
The great thing about this show is how everyone has a favorite episode, and they’re all so enjoyable in their own way. This show deserves a release on streaming so it can get love from old and new generations.
What about Demon Knight?! That one was awesome!
William Sadler, Billy Zane and Jada Pinkett Smith are fantastic in that episode.
Wonderful cast, great effects, great humor and NO crappy cgi, Demon Knight is one of the best 90s horror flix.
Dragon 519 That and Bordello of blood are Movies not an episode
There’s actually (technically) 3 movies
That's a movie
Never got the appeal of DK (I know that’s blasphemy) but BOB was a way better film imho
Best 2 episodes are What’s Cooking and Cutting Cards. What’s Cooking is my favorite and I watch it at least once a year. Thank you for the video!
One of the only dvd sets I’ve never regretted buying 🔪
I would add People Who Live In Brass Hearses and What's Cookin'
Christopher Reeves was so damn good in that. It honestly made me want steak really bad regardless of the plot.
Plus how often do you see Superman duke it out with John Bender over Meatloaf.
My favorite is the one where the sleezy talkshow host explores the haunted house. Scared the sh-t out of me when I was a kid.
YEP, the episode was titled 'television terror'.
my fav ep is the college ep were the pledges have to go inside this haunted house and impress the girls and turns out that the girls are dead and chop them up with chainsaw and eat them
Ventriloquist Dummy, Split Personality, Strung Along, Till Death, and What’s Cookin were my favorite episodes
One of my friends as a kid used to have some episodes on VHS ^^
Scared the shit out of me.. didn't help that he lived in a house surrounded by woods, making it a creepy location too.
Had to go rewatch the 'cutting cards' one on RUclips - hahaha can't belive I was scare of this! It's soo cheesy! :D
Same here the crypt keeper was my biggest fear as a child
Nick Estrada i guess me and my children are weird we think hes cute
Cheep Cheep nightmare house!!😮 i would have never slept lol
No way Jose the best episode is when Tim Curry played all three characters and they killed salesman
Collection Completed, King of the Road, and Dig That Cat are my favorites. I love this show. It's like Creepshow.
Really love your list. I also loved the Lower Berth, The Assassin, and Top Billing episodes.
The Assassin...thats my shit!
I loved only skin deep I think it was called .2 season .episode 4 or 5 I think .
shadowlinkbds good list
Dwayne King me too
i love lower berth, it's a pretty sweet episode, if i remember correctly.
I love that yellow was featured in hear, it may not have been a typical tale from the crypt, but the execution and ruthlessness of it was perfect. Definitely one of my favorites
God I've been watching cinemassacare for years.
Still watchin, buddy?
The episode with Morton Downey Jr. Was my favorite.
Television Horror is indeed a great episode. Still gives me the creeps.
Thank you for reminding how great these were.
I always loved this show as a kid. It was actually on national TV in Mexico for a long time, uncensored but relegated to only night time showing, at around 11 pm. It was the coolest thing to watch alongside Are you Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps.
Kevin Yagher was my dad's best man in his wedding with my mom.
Korman's kalamity and television terror will always be the most memorable to me.
"Cutting Cards" is my favorite too! Directed by Walter Hill :D
One of my favorites was Top Billing. It's where this guy tries to get a role as Hamlet, for a play, then he finds out his role is really Yorick.
Good list!
A couple episodes that I think should crack the Top 10 are Three's a Crowd, Television Terror, Mournin' Mess, Two for the Show, and The Trap. Three's a Crowd's ending is so twisted. Television Terror is super creepy. Mournin' Mess has the classic funny Tales twist. Two for the Show is one of those awesome Crime/Shock Suspense Story episodes. And lastly, the Trap, Lou Paloma is one of the best characters in the show - #2 behind Joe Pesci's of course :)
BitsAndGlory dude you know your TFTC. The one with Tim Ross as the painter was awesome as well
I watched Three’s A Crowd when I was about 10yrs old. I still remember to this day. That was so twisted. Loved it haha

Death of some salesman?

Ronald Shank that episode scared the shit out of me
I immediately thought of Cutting Cards. Good video.
Ann Coulter was absolutely fantastic in these!
You mean,"she who shall not be named"
Lol, good work, it was funny, and you triggered people. I always compared her to Skeletor tho.

Television Terror was the episode that really got me scared as a kid when I watch it late night on tv when it air in syndication.
BRING BACK THE 90'S
Bring back the 80s!
Great show. Split Seconds, Collection Completed, What's Cookin, and Death of some Salesmen are my favorites.
I would also add People Who Live in Brass Hearses, come on Bill Paxton & Brad Dourif, you cant go wrong.
Yellow is one of my favorites also. I always loved watching tales from the crypt when I was a kid. Good memories.
My personal favorite was always Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone.
I loved staying up to watch this as a kid. And crypt keeper was awesome too
Lance Henriksen's the man.

Yellow feels like a movie because it's based off the film, Paths of Glory starring Kirk Douglas. The film was directed by Kubrick.

The one where they get trapped in the mall after hours really scared me.

You, Murderer
The Man Who Was Death
By the way, you ever see the "Demon Knight" episode?
That one's my favorite.
While that was a movie, not an episode, I definitely agree. It was an excellent movie! Better than Bordello of Blood any day!
Loved this show, and it reminds me of the "Creepshow" movies... loved them.
So it's like The Twilight Zone, but edgier?
TZ is more Sci-Fi and complex issues of morality .. This is just pure funny horror and revenge
90s Outer Limits is pretty damn good but 80's TZ sucked
I grew up watching 80's TZ. It was great! Sure, there was quite a few stinkers, but the good ones made up for it. You really think episodes like "To See The Invisible Man", "Profile In Silver", and "Dead Run" sucked?
Nah
That one episode Loved To Death had a similar storyline with The Twilight Zone episode The Chaser. The difference is the endings. In The Chaser Roger attempts to poison his wife Leila but changes his mind when she tells him she's pregnant! In Loved To Death Edward ended up poisoning himself instead of Miranda. He ends up in the afterlife shortly being joined by Miranda who killed herself by jumping out the window! He screams in torment at the thought of them being together for eternity!
I enjoyed this show as an adult. The crypt keepers laugh always scared me when i was a kid. The good old days.
THe scarriest episodes were the ones that were rehashed and shown years later with no indication from the thumbnail that it was from years ago.
Wait what
How could “Whats Cookin’ “ not be #1 that episode is fucking awesome and easily the best
Good to know that Michelle Obama had that face-lift after Tales from the Crypt
paladindarknite wow asshole she looks nothing like the crypt keeper
paladindarknite wow bringing politics into something cool
Go to Fox News jackass
Fucking idiot
Lmao, he made a joke and everyone got triggered. Seems like he won
It doesn't really matter who got triggered, a jackass is still a jackass
Your dialogue an storytelling is awesome.
I miss AVGN
cealazna K it's still ongoing. did you miss the last batch of episodes?
ryan timony yeah
The Halloween episode of AVGN will likely make it worth your wait. Enjoy the other awesome content while you wait.
ElitePizza311 ok... Thanks 😊
I miss the whole era. I bet the liberals wouldn’t let you make some of the episodes.
I can’t believe I remembered every one of these.. great list!
so many legends and great actors were part of TFTC....love those HBO days from the 90's
I agree with your picks. One episode I would personally add would've been in the same season as "Yellow" was the episode "Abra Cadaver" where the bulk of it was in pov perspective. I thought it was unique for the time.
