Bonneville Salt Flats: Exploring and Dispersed Camping

  • On my way north toward Wyoming from southern Nevada I stopped to visit friends, Greg and Val, at their new home in northern Nevada and then made my way toward Bonneville Salt Flats. I have only passed through this area once before, and that was last summer late at night. I had planned to camp and explore around the area last year, but it was in the midst of a heat wave and the entire region was smothered in heavy smoke from wildfires in California.
    The Bonneville Salt Flats are a fascinating geologic feature spanning 30,000 acres. The effect standing beside the salt flats left me thinking of either a calm sea or a snow-covered field.

    The mystery loading dock is in fact a loading dock. likely for some abandoned mining concern.

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  3 года назад

      I should have known you would recognize it, Greg! Some sort of loading dock was my best guess with that earthen ramp behind it, but I had not seen anything quite like it. I'm sure there was a lot of mining in those mountains back in the day.

    If there was ever cows or sheep that were pastured in this area, the loading dock could have been used to move the livestock.

  • @charlottewilson4680

    I think it is an old loading dock and then it looks like some one had a fire pit. Maybe then used it for shelter.

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  3 года назад +1

      I was thinking some sort of loading dock as well, especially with that earthen ramp in the rear. I'm pretty sure there would have been some mining operations in those mountains in years past so that would make sense.

    Any sign of an old railroad bed? Maybe a "stopper" for parking one?

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  3 года назад

      There is a current rail line to the south of the salt flats, but it's probably 5-10 miles from where I was camped. I don't know what might have been there years ago though. I'm sure there was some mining done in the mountains around this area.
