Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien resurrection, they're all good, remarkably rewatchable. Best thing about each of them is that they have their own style and subgenre.
Alien and Aliens are the only canonical films of the original 4. Alien 3 is a nightmare that Ripley had while in cryo sleep. Alien 4 "Resurrection" is a nightmare that Newt had during cryo sleep - she witnessed experiments by Weyland Yutani and being an impressionable child influenced it. That's how I reconcile it and no one can tell me different.
I accept Alien ³. It's a very true to life ending for the trilogy. Life doesn't always end like a fairy tale movie, sometimes the things you really don't want happening happen. People die when you don't want them to. That's life.
Unpopular opinion: Alien and Prometheus are the top 2 movies in the franchise. Prometheus was the first movie to dive into the history of the alien spaceship and engineers introduced in Alien and i loved that. After that comes Aliens and then the rest. I gotta say my least favorite has to be 3 its just so relentlessly grim and i guess kind of one dimensional.
Admittedly i enjoyed Alien 3, Resurrection, and Prometheus in spite of how flawed they were. I recognize they're universally hated and that's fine. The first two will always be the staple masterpieces.
Prometheus was great as an original story. It's a shame it was badly written and they made such ridiculous decisions regarding taking helmets off and others.
Alien was genius. Aliens was a retrograde step to make it heroic and Alien 3 made short shift of Aliens to bring the horror back to the fore. I like Alien 3. The rest were diminishing returns and I doubt the next one will change my mind
One of my favourite unpopular opinions is that AvP is no worse than Prometheus. They're both dumb action movies, but only one is a pompous defence of Intelligent Design with people doing actively moronic things to get themselves killed. And as for the utter trash that is Covenant... Alien Three Stooges nearly broke me laughing
AVP is FAR better than Prometheus. AVP the people make decisions you'd think someone would make. They are just in a no win situation. I can rewatch that multiple times... like Pacific Rim. Prometheus people are just dumb and self centered, and there are way too many fake-outs. Taking their helmets off, touching the snake, reviving an alien, 2 guys with a secret mission, etc. Like Pacific Rim 2.
Aliens was cool back in the eighties in your teens in the cinema complex. Mighty fine. Alien was another movie completely, more like a horror and suspense piece. Both masterpieces. Alien 3 doesn't really exist in my alien universe. Maybe I need to watch it again?
Alien 3 has a ridiculous amount of hate. It's a pure horror story, beautifully shot, graphic. There's no hope there at all, especially with the opening.
Lindelof is a controversial creator. He was involved in one good thing, though. Check out the first season of the "The Leftovers". It was an HBO series from a few years ago. Ignore the followups, but the first season is a legitimately excellent miniseries
I hate Alien 4 for no other reason than making that stupid word xenomorph canon, according to nerds. Lt Gorman was the only other one to use that word. No other character in no other movie calls the beast “xenomorph “

Alien 1 & 2, are the only REALLY good alien films. I liked AVP (we don't talk about AVP2). The big issue I have with ALL the alien films is that they found ONE thing they think that makes an Alien film, and Alien film, and that's: A woman lead who is kicks ass. Why? EVERY Alien film must have a female lead who outlives her team. It just gets boring, at some point. Sure, the old horror trope of The Virgin Lives worked in Friday the 13 and Halloween, but geeze... EVERY Alien film? The biggest issue I have with Alien Romulus is that it is coming out in 2024. This means it's going have tons of woke garbage in it, on top of the standard woman lead who is smarter than her team, but talked down to, but turns out to be correct in the end. I'll pass until reviews come out. the only film I'm willing to risk going to the theater this year is DP3.
I agree. The cool thing in Alien was Ripley was written as a male then Weaver was cast. She was one of the original final girls. And she played it perfect. The second Aliens she was flawed so it made her character more interesting,. By 3 she was really messed up and depressed. Which I liked.

I showed my wife the alien films, and when she asked if there was a 4th one, I said NO. She then found it, and I warned her that the first half and second half feel like they were written by 2 different people, she still wanted to see it. She now agrees. There is no Alien 4, and there is No Star Wars after Lucas (other than Rogue one).
Aliens is a poor Alien movie--it is too upbeat and positive. The Alien universe is supposed to be bleak and hopeless. Alien 3 is by far the superior movie.
Alien 3 is inexcludable. David Fincher style fits the trilogy really well. Also I love its unhappy ending - fits the whole franchise universe. Aliens is the worst in trilogy imo - the less artistic one, more bombastic, while obviously still cool - i just prefer Alien and Alien 3 slower pace and gloomy atmosphere without shootouts
Yeah, Evil Dead remake was solid. It was gross AF. I haven't seen Alien, or Aliens. I've seen Prometheus, and Alien Covenant. I thought those movies were cool. I think Ridley Scott makes really visually interesting movies. I'll have to check out Alien, and Aliens. Thanks for the recommendation!

I hated Leftovers! I found his elusiveness with plot and theme annoying.
