This woman can Sang her ass off. Listen to “Footsteps” by Vanilla and see what he did with her voice sample.

That cover of "Bad Side of the Blues" is sick. I saw her live once in her later years and even with her lower range she found such rich phrasing and storytelling.

Crazy thing is while we were being spoiled with the likes of Reneee and Marcia everyone overseas thought we were a musical and cultural backwater. In fact there was even a term for it in Australia called "cultural cringe". It's funny really because nobody was cringing when these ladies opened their tonsils. And Australia was pumping out local legends effortlessly at the time but almost all struggled to make it overseas. As you can see it makes absolutely no sense...

Yep, Renee was often called Australia's Queen of Soul. Fantastic voice. RIP Renee ❤

A couple of weeks ago I went and saw Mahalia Barnes do a set at the Bowral Bowling Club. It's this Monday night thing she does with different friends--members of the band. It was really chill, and she was so funny. But she did a couple of Renee's songs. She said she's had a couple of experiences with Renee--some good, some not so good. She was so respectful. Everyone laughed, because Renee even called herself a 'difficult woman' lol.
Anyway, 9pm, Mahalia answers her wrist phone during a song. Everyone was laughing at her. I thought it might have been her husband, who was playing in Sydney with one of her good friends, so never thought anymore about it. Then, 40mins later, who should walk in but Mum and Dad!! They just came from the airport in Sydney, where they flew in from New Zealand. Anyway, Jimmy and Jane got up on stage, and they were having a whole family joke about, and paying each other off. All singing songs together. At one point Mahalia says to Jimmy, "I ain't intimidated by you, like all those others" LOL!! They did about three songs together. Then he did Flame trees. Man, his voice, in that small little club, with about 70 people watching--was like a sonic BOOM! Nearly blew the roof off. But it never once hurt the ears. It was never too much. That's my story ;)
I thought of you on the way home lol

You're absolutely right. She was the Queen of Soul in Australia and a great singer by world standards. Very underrated. Sadly missed.

I saw her live more than a few times, she was definitely Australia's Queen of Soul. One of my favourite artists from there.

Please listen to her Album " Blues License". The full album is on youtube. The first track, The Thrill is Gone is amazing...!!!. Have been listening to this Album/CD for decades. The whole CD is amazing. It is unfortunately no longer being produced/released. My CD (of this recording) got stuck in a CD player that I owned a couple of years ago and because I loved this CD so much I actually pulled the stereo apart to get the CD out. Wrecked the stereo but got my Blues License CD. Happy days!!

We have quite a lot of great blu-eyed soul singers of that era in Oz. We were singing Donny Hathaway material since the early 70's, Marvin, Stevie, Luther etc. They just never got picked up by the outside markets.

R.I.P. soul sister ❤🙏🏾. I grew up listening to her soulful bluesy voice. Took my sisters to go see her at the Tivoli many years later and Renee was even more awesome live.

When they went to release her records in US they didn't want to use her image because she was doing well on the Black Radio. Everyone thought she was black. Sad reflection of the music industry in US.

Herb Alpert took her to the states and had her doing backing sessions. Unfortunately, nothing came of it.

Once again, thanks Nick for doing my request. "Stares and Whispers" one of my favourites from Renee. This tribute was posted by a fan and youtuber. It's really well put together. You mentioned Gladys Knight and Renee does a killer version of "Midnight Train to Georgia" (on my list to request). RIP Renee. We will keep playing the music so her legacy lives on ❤

Have you seen her singing backup with Jimmy Barnes for Richard Clapton?
Edit....my bad. I meant Renee singing backup with Vanetta Fields, for Richard Clapton...
However there is an official clip of River Deep Mountain High Cold Chisel song where Renee sang with Vanetta as their back up and Jimmy gets both Renee and Vanetta to sing a verse and he joins in the back up signing slot.....

I only saw Renee sing live once. Her set wasn't too memorable and then - about half way through - she projectile vomited and then left the stage. That was the time of her heavy drug usage.
