She described herself as "a white Hungarian Jew from Australia sounding like a 65-year-old black man from Alabama". She spent more than ten years based in the United States but had little chart success there under her own name, yet contributing to releases by Neil Diamond, Men at Work, Sting, Trouble Funk and many others. Geyer returned to Australia in the mid-1990s and her career has continued into the 21st century with her 2003 album, Tenderland, which peaked at #11 on the ARIA albums charts. Renee's music was popular on black American radio station because people thought she was black. Peace out.

Well it's about time you saw Renee Geyer, my favourite Aussie female singer. Her and Vanetta Fields often do the back up singing for cold chisel's live performances. I remember reading a article about when she did have a small amount of success in the US, that when people heard her on the radio before knowing who she was, they thought she was a black singer because of her stunning Soul and R&B sound🥰. Good job Michael 👏
You sorta did her before - she was singing beside Jimmy Barnes in his Knocking on Heaven's Door reaction you did. And yep, she's pretty darn good - my favourite of hers has always been Stares and Whispers... oh and also Do You Know What I Mean
That moment when Jimmy takes the microphone out of the stand to sing in Knocking on Heaven Door tribute to Andy Durant, she is the one that sings with him. She is the woman equivalent of Jimmy and oh so brilliant. So much soul 👏 👏
@@kazz3956 I LOVE Jimmy, but on a technical level, she's not his equivalent - she blows him out of the water. (Barnsey would probably agree). Like Jimmy, she has plenty of soul & passion, but her understanding and execution of intricate jazz lines, and the ability to blend them in effortlessly with her soul & pop vocals, are next level. Go to 6:41 - 6:47 on this vid to hear what I'm talking about. That's a two-and-a-half octave descending jazz run - perfectly executed! Most singers don't even have a *range* of two-and-a-half octaves, let alone the ability to deliver two-and-a-half octaves in a continuous, tasteful run. Its why people like Sting & Joe Cocker hired her to come work with them. She's a "muso's muso."🙏
Renee Geyer REST IN POWER. I absolutely love that you said she had Glady's Knight nuisances in her voice. Absolutely 💯 agree Glady's is premium quality pure and soulful voices in my lifetime. Renee is astounding one of a kind and truly gifted. ❤️
She is another underrated Australian Singer, she had so much soul in her voice, she was definitely 1 of kind. As far as I know she’s Australian. Yes this is back in the 80’s, I think we Aussies were at least 20 years in front of the rest of the world when it came to music. There are so many fabulous Australian Singers from back then and still today. The only difference is travel is far easier now than it was back then. Going overseas was a major undertaking and expensive also back then. So a lot of performers honed their skills here before going overseas and I think it has served them well.🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️
Such sorrow at the passing of this great Australian lady of soul. A woman of fire and passion. I was most privileged to have seen her perform live many years ago.
Renee is still singing and appeared at the Birds basement on RUclips earlier in 2022...she is now 69 and excels in jazz vocals with a soul influence. 🤓😎👍🤗...she has since passed away so RIP Renee...you will be missed. 😇😇
And she's an Aussie. She released an album in the U.S. that was getting airplay on black radio until they saw that she was white. The record company told her not to put her photo on the cover but she insisted. She still regrets the decision.
Renee is a QUEEN! She is a true legend in this part of the world. She was played on repeat all. the. time. in my family. Hungarian Aussie. Listen to 'Good morning, morning glory'. She has tonnes of hits :)
Beautiful voice. Alas, Renee passed away 17th January 2023. Her family said In a statement that Renee passed away from complications following hip surgery. And apparently whilst in hospital it was found she had inoperable lung cancer. (She had breast cancer circa 2009 but recovered from that). RIP Renee :(
He'll yeah, Renner Geyer, fantastic vocalist, another hidden gem, her voice in recent times has aged and has more of a gravelly blues sound to it, still awesome after all these years. Another great request from your fans, takes me back to another time and place when I hear this track!
I lived through the seventies seeing her live several times in Sydney clubs.I had all her records. She is amazing. So glad you folks have finally discovered her. Most underrated female performer in Australian history 👏👏👏👏

My fav Renee Geyer song: It only happens when I look at you (cover) soulful as the best, do yourself a favor you will enjoy immensely. Love your channel and get a kick out of your reactions.
@@fm6419 Not going to argue. She did not get the attention she deserved, always having to play dives and small venues. If you were 'there' you would have seen it as it was. She deserved superstardom that the likes of overseas bands got. That ACDC and Air Supply and Skyhooks and Olivia and Johnny Farnham and Helen Reddy got. She never reached those heights when she should have flown over them. If you google major acts from the 70s it is hard to even find her name.

Renee was a star here in NZ too a regularbin early 80s at jazz/blues fests (especially annual festival at mon desir hotel takapuna beach ) ..used to love her voice , and cold chisel (plus the Angels ) used to be regulars here in nz .. saw last farewell concert of cold chisel , remember seeing them heaps , even at our famous Sweetwaters music fests , and Angels .. Funny the Angels just use to play in big pubs here back in the day .. one rocking awesome band ( does anyone know what the time is ☺) only us angels fans know ...
I remember reading a article about when she did have a small amount of success in the US, that when people heard her on the radio before knowing who she was, they thought she was a black singer because of her stunning Soul and R&B sound🥰. Good job Michael 👏
I love her live version of If loving you is wrong (i dont wanba be right).
We just lost her today! 😟RIP Renee … 🇦🇺 icon 😢❤
Stares and Whispers 🙌
My favorite artist of all time...soulful vocals...
She was brilliant live, absolutely brilliant ♥️
She was one of the best soul singers . Love love her voice. 💜
So a lot of performers honed their skills here before going overseas and I think it has served them well.🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️
An Aussie gal. We have been so blessed over the years with such talented musician/singers. Yep.
Such sorrow at the passing of this great Australian lady of soul. A woman of fire and passion. I was most privileged to have seen her perform live many years ago.
Love your reactions bro, your a brilliant singer yourself.
I was going through the comments to see weather anyone had told this story. Was beginning to think it was a myth.
RIP Renee :(
Renee is from Melbourne, self-described as "a white Hungarian Jew from Australia sounding like a 65-year-old black man from Alabama."
Finally some Renee. YAY!
An exceptionally talented lady and one of my favourite Oz singers. Thank you. 😊
love this song, wish you did the studio version but this is good too
He'll yeah, Renner Geyer, fantastic vocalist, another hidden gem, her voice in recent times has aged and has more of a gravelly blues sound to it, still awesome after all these years. Another great request from your fans, takes me back to another time and place when I hear this track!
RIP Rene Geyer 😭❤️
I lived through the seventies seeing her live several times in Sydney clubs.I had all her records. She is amazing. So glad you folks have finally discovered her. Most underrated female performer in Australian history 👏👏👏👏
I was lucky enough to see Renee at The Basement in Sydney 3 times and she truly was one of the most soulful voices Australia ever had. She will be missed. R.I.P ❤
My fav Renee Geyer song: It only happens when I look at you (cover) soulful as the best, do yourself a favor you will enjoy immensely. Love your channel and get a kick out of your reactions.
Used to see her live, she was great, great songs!!!!!
One of my favorites also… just hadn’t gotten around to requesting her! 😃
Same !
The most under-appreciated female singer here!
Not back in the day.
@@fm6419 Australia never gave her the credit - she was miles ahead of her time
@@lululangford Yes it did, I was around at the time
@@fm6419 Not going to argue.
There was a tiny bit of Renee harmonising with Jimmy Barnes at the end of a collaborative song that you watched. She is amazing. I worry about her. Her "It's a Man's World" is a revelation.
Renee is from Australia 🇦🇺 💕
