    In fairness, Blue was never openly hostile to Red in the games. Yeah, he was a bit of a jerk, but I alwasy kinda just saw that as playful banter. It always seemed to me that Ash disliked Garry a lot more than Garry disliked Ash.

      Trying to make Ash spin in circles for food on Cinnabar island when they were hungry was pretty messed up. Gary definitely was the hostile one to Ash in the beginning. Ash would even try to make peace with Gary sometimes, like complimenting him on his studying or offering them to tie during an argument over a poke ball, and Gary STILL would respond by being mean.

  • @Snowmon89

    I think that originally, Gary really was a jerk with Ash, but grew to respect him as he improved. He figured that one of the reasons that Ash did so well was Because Of their rivalry, thus he's only pretending in order to motivate Goh. Plus, I think Gary sees a little of himself in Goh with his "catch first, ask questions later" attitude. Despite Goh also attempts to actually understand and be friends with his Pokémon and not just catch them all.
    My proof was actually during one of the episodes right before the Kanto League. The one where everyone thought that Ash and Gary would finally battle each other.
    In that episode the two of them compared PokéDexes. Despite all of Ash's Tauros, Gary Caught the most Pokémon ( hands down, but Ash actually looked up the most Pokémon. Heck, even more than Gary actually caught. It's at that point the two of them (at the very least) started to realize that they just simply had different philosophies when it came to Pokémon. Now look at Gary after he lost the Kanto League and stopped being Ash's Rival, he became a researcher and found that he honestly enjoys it. I think that, just like with his Eevee evolving into Umbreon (which was exclusively a Friendship evolution at the time), Gary also sort of "Evolved" as a Trainer. Simply because he started to try to Understand his Pokémon more than he originally did.

    *JUST look* at the very first scene of Ash and Gary in the anime.
    Gary has teased Ash, but it was obvious to me that it was not out of spite or meanness. Reminded me of how big brothers behave towards their little ones.

    Regardless if people like the writing and pacing of Journeys or not, the message is there but this episode is both good and bad depending on viewers who watched it, As a massive fan of Goh myself, I personally loved it a lot and always been a fan of Project Mew episodes but I completely understand why many wouldn’t like this episode, especially from a narrative perspective but I think what the writers were intended to do was focusing on realism and acknowledging that everyone has their own flaws in which I personally appreciate but from a narrative standpoint, its moreso about telling the story and not showing it, not to mention that everyone’s mindset is completely different considering that people are going to judge it on what they see; Some like the writing and pacing of Journeys, some don’t and I personally love Journeys as my fourth favorite series but I respect those who completely dislike it, problem here is that they are trying to multitask everything at once but it doesn’t work in this one.
    I would like for the staff and production team to play around with the episodes in terms of the personalities of Ash and Goh’s Pokémon, more training episodes, focusing more on the concepts of cooperation, Project Mew, PWC and etc.
    I get that many people are completely disappointed with the writing and pacing of Journeys but despite that I don’t mind it and I am still having a lot of fun watching it, I am just grateful for what we currently have and that’s matters to me personally!!! 👏

    I assumingly guess that Ash's father inherited the-so called position of Team Rocket HQ as the CEO or president position but his father knows that he will never see the accomplishments Ash achieved and when Delia knew his husband was part of an organization runs by bad guys she was frustrated and promised that he would never get his son away from her to inherit what his father's position to run the Team Rocket HQ higher than Giovanni's position. Delia is still keeping secret to Ash why his father left him and her, although she is finding some time to explain to Ash the whereabouts of his father. I completely agree. Gary was really spot on in the recent episode. And they handled it well. My only complaint is how they did Goh. I feel like if they made him fail the mission it would’ve been a bit better. Because Goh really needs to learn and progress more, and seeing that would def be a boost. But wow the ending of the episode was a shock to see too! Good job writers!

    I remember in a really old interview with Tajiri, that stated Gary is meant to be a mentor to Ash, in a way that Miyamoto was to him. Which is why the characters are named after them. (What he's doing to Goh now actually isn't too different to what he did with Ash; early dub kinda erased away a few aspects of it in favor of making Gary more jerk-ish) Considering that both after the Orange League and Battle Frontier Gary was used to humble Ash and keep him moving, the whole "start each region anew with just Pikachu" Ash got from Gary [starting research with just Blastoise] after Johto, Ash getting motivated after envisioning Gary speaking to him when he received that postcard, helping Ash with Gligar...That part of him was always there, it just moved on to Goh.

  • @JDjade1
    @JDjade1 2 года назад +13

    1) F*** the name "Horace".
    2) I think early Gary was immature and overconfident to the point of arrogant during the Kanto season. The man believed his own hype. I mean, the guy had freaking cheerleaders for crying out loud. I started seeing "maturity" in Gary in those two episodes after the Orange Islands Arc(the ones where Gary saves everyone from the Circus then beats Ash with his Eevee). There was a lot more humility and honest self-assessment from Gary after he beat Ash during that battle. Gary has done a lot of growing over the 25 years of the anime, just as Ash has.

  • @SBK1975
    @SBK1975 2 года назад +63

    Well Gary was Ash's Childhood friend so I don't think he dont want ash to be the very best . I think he wants ash to be the very best that's why Gary always Showed Ash How Weak he is like when ash thought he is strong after winning in Orange island but Gary Destroyed him in battle then he also beat ash after Battle frontier win . So may be Gary was trying to pull the Best out of ash .

    • @PhotonDragon16
      @PhotonDragon16 2 года назад +6

      That sounds about right. Remember after Gary beat Ash post Battle Frontier he told Ash about the Sinnoh region and told him to check it out. Clearly wanting Ash to compete in that league

    • @PeterParker-ff7ub

      That doesn't make Ash better.

  • @lindasegal9992
    @lindasegal9992 2 года назад +43

    That theory could go in both directions. Gary could have been wanting Ash to improve this entire time but it’s also possible he could have just been the equivalent of a brother picking on his sibling but still cared about him. He did write on a sign once “Gary was here Ash is a loser” which could also throw the theory off. But clearly that was a 4kids edit. I wonder what was written originally

    • @bluefirekid
      @bluefirekid 2 года назад +15

      The sign originally said "Shigeru has arrived! Satoshi is a moron!", with an overlay of Gary taunting that gets edited out of the dub. (So the context was basically the same, but the main thing with their rivalry was Ash being behind Gary and is trying to catch up to him)

  • @luigiRobs14
    @luigiRobs14 2 года назад +76

    I like to think him taunting Goh is because he saw the problem he had back in his early days, helping Goh realise what he needs to change the same way he did long ago, as he knows firsthand that not adapting will cost him in the long run.

  • @babysinclairfan

    I have to disagree. I think Gary was more immature in the early seasons and completely drops his old persona by Sinnoh. When Gary first appears in journeys, he demonstrates that he's able to imitate his old personality. I don't think he was acting until journeys

  • @DanielAnthonyVNeri
    @DanielAnthonyVNeri 2 года назад +16

    If Gary met Giovanni when they talked about Ash won the earth badge from the 1st season then I assume that Giovanni reports to the father of Ash regarding improvements that Ash achieved in 8 generations like he's now the Champion of Alola Region and now he's reaching his goal to be a monarch against Leon.

    to be honest with you, I disagree, back when Ash was being his journey and was competing for against Gary to earn gym badges, I don't think that in the writer's minds, they thought of garys charter as improving Ash as a battler. in pokemon journeys, it seems like the storyline has shifted to each episode having a more powerful meaning behind it, and this could be one of those powerful meanings. as in the original Takeshi Shudō depicted the anime to be in a more dark sense as he openly admitted. and when watching journeys, I could depict various lessons within episodes like episode 87 and episode 96. and so the writers of journeys most likely wanted Gary's charter in journeys to be more helpful/mature.

    For me, Gary in OG always felt like he was naturally snarky, but learnt how to use that to push Ash along and forward. Not to mention both him and Ash were hot headed with each other over not that pokeball, but Gary's comment that drawing with Ash was losing to him, which made Ash think how Gary viewed his own talent as a traine... Oh.

    I feel like with Ash he always had that intent but with Gou the impact is more felt instead of nuance, which is a double edge sword since it's basically him and his gramps giving in-universe exposition bas to why they act the way they do so it breaks the immersion somehow. Saying what they're feeling and the reasons why they're acting as such is very telegraphed and having the charcaters doing the job of the narrator, at this point they should just wink at the audience and saying "our tough love is for Gou's own sake and development kids, in case you're not smart enough to understand". It's tell not show.🙄

    Honestly I feel like there's some nitpicking when it comes to this episode with the dislikes cuz I thought it was pretty cool with Go being a bit selfish and wanting to prove himself with the Raid Battle since it was a Mew mission even if you messed up a lot. And I especially think it was cool because Articuno was a super strong legendary and I love how they made it so a couple of people say that it felt too broken which I really don't know how you can say that for a legendary but I guess that's just those Lumiose trainers.
    Also I really like the end where go realizes that Gary is provoking him so he can realize his mistakes and learn from them and actually caught me off-guard since I've always saw him as a jerk as well so it taught me a lesson as well. However overall I will agree that I don't think go should have gotten rewarded so that the lesson could have honed in that he needed to improve his teamwork skills even if Gary can be a bit of a jerk and headstrong leader sometimes he means well, even if he's a loser at showing it. 😜

    Though Gary's encounters with Ash during the Kanto seasons were so few and far between compared to Ash's overall journey that it is a bit hard to imagine this would be too effective in the planning stages. Hey what if Gary was doing it with the other 2 unnamed trainers that got out from Pallet Town with the other starters? That'd explain why he wasn't all that consistently seeing Ash as a main rival. Maybe that act was harsher at first and had a hand in the retirement of at least 1 of them, leading to a readjusting of the act in a more toned down manner? By Go's time Gary would have had the act down to a T. I'm not really watching Journeys but the chameos are amusing to hear about, I am curious to know if Journeys ties the Chronicles episodes with the main story, because I remember Gary had become more of a scientist back in that special.

    I personally believe that the Gary we got was the wrong one. 4kids did a lot of mistakes when they dubbed the anime (They went as far as to kill Brock's mother while in the original, she was alive.) So I believe Gary's role was as an extension of his Grandfather. To make sure that Ash succeeds and remain focus on defeating him and in order to do that, he has to make sure that he was a good challenger for him. And that makes me my favorite character now. Gary isn't a jerk, he just provoke those he find promising but lack something.
    4kids really messed up the character.

    Umm... Of course Gary was trying to get ash to improve... That's what a Rival is FOR. the Rivalry between them was set up in several flashbacks In the Johto series... They were rivals LONG before they had pokemon. By giving ash his half of the Symbolic broken PokeBall they mutually fished up. He acknowledged ash had improved. THAT'S ALSO when he stopped being Antagonistic toward ash. Because he didn't NEED a tough Rival anymore... Instead, they could go back to simply being Friends on similar but different paths... That Gary isn't as big an ass as he pretended to be Is not New information.

    Gary and blue are literally ash and red’s best friends. People took the dialogue in the games the wrong way. Blue In the games was supposed to be more like a competitive friend pushing u to be better. Not bullying you.
    Oooo u mentioned the Japanese dub in the anime. Thank you. One of very few RUclipsrs to do so

    There is a possibility that he wanted Ash to improve because Gary wasn’t a prideful boy, he respected others and loved Pokémon. Maybe he wanted Ash, who he knew for a long time become a trainer who focused on bonding with Pokémon instead of being a power hungry seeker like most of the trainers you could find.

    Gary was always my favorite. Ash was stupid. Specially the first season. He wanted to become a Pokémon master? He didn't had basic knowledge or knew the rules like max 6 pokemon. And didn't knew pokemon. Always checked his pokedex. (but i get why if wanna make a tv series)
    Yes gary tried to improve ash to grow and challenge him. And finally he reached a point. So yes of course respect. Okay maybe Gary was hard first season and maybe not writers idea back then. We all grow up.
    Gary knew what he wanted, was strong. Evolved his pokemon and was always a step ahead.
    The guy even had 10 badges in Kanto.

    lol. Pokémon lore can be changed if they want to change. You have the hindsight to see clearly now that they hold it in front of your face and tell you what it is. That doesn’t mean that its what it originally was.
    Gary was NOT originally written in this light. ALWAYS remember that. Stop letting these writers retcon the original before there is nothing that we recognize.

    Garry could be one of the Top 8 and his battles have been hidden from the public.
    The one thing we don't have is a Professor that specialises his studies in battles. (kukui studies moves which is different)
    Garry still uses Pokemon, most Professors don't tend to have a team ready, Kukui is an exception as he was champion as well.
    So Garry could one of the top 8 and using what he's experiencing to become a Professor of battling.

    But I'm kinda jealous i shipped Gary and Ash but seeing he acts the same way with go makes my health heavy for some reason....it feels like it's sinking.....him teasing Ash was my best reason to ship those two as I always knew he did this to motivate him.....

    Gary says all the terrible things so Ash improves correct because when he not around he says nice stuff about him. Do you know why his doing this instead of minding is own business and buggers off. Because his related to Professor Oak and you don't know their conventions before ash got up late early one morning in the first episode. We all know who is Oak is the 4ever movie and I don't really need to explain why he looking out for Ash do I? Nope I don't.

    I believe you are both right and wrong
    wrong in that Gary wasn't originally this way from the start
    right in that he did utilized this mentality for Ash during their rivalry
    see Gary was a very cocky and arrogant trainer being Oak's Grandson and having lots of experience, talent and knowledge with Pokemon beforehand more than Ash ever did
    and he was doing very well for a very long time in his Kanto journey too and he did actually considered Ash to be inferior to him like he said in the Japanese version "the fourth place guy" thats how he always looked on him thinking he was a barely competent and bad trainer who only got to this point because of luck (he was not wrong though Kanto Ash was a by book definition of rookie ngl)
    Gary was always an overachiever as he also went on to collect 10 Gym badges instead of just 8 to flaunt by exceeding the minimum Gym badge count needed for Indigo League registration
    but then he saw Ash battle TR in the Viridian Gym and how he commanded his Pokemon in battle and showed care and concern for them while also fighting bravely and being determined to win the badge at any cost even after TR rigging the match with the Neuroshock stage to the point when by the time of Pokemon league he called Ash a trainer who is good just not as good as him
    but then everything changed and Gary's entire world view shattered when he lost in top 32 of Pokemon League as his entire view of himself as a Pokemon trainer crumbled around him followed by the fact that Ash crossed him and made his way to top 16 thus outperforming him
    after a while of absence and soul searching and reshaping his personality he returned with his Pokemon to give Ash the beatdown he needed just after his big Orange League victory using nothing but his Eevee to beat his Pikachu who just defeated a Champion level Dragonite
    this is where he became the Gary who respected Ash as a trainer and pushed him to become a better trainer by continuing his rivalry all the way into Johto League over the time Gary himself did self introspection and realized that battles isn't his jam and not something he is really into so decided to pursue becoming a professor instead by retiring from battles altogether
    and thus eventually meeting Goh and continuing his style that he used on Ash all the way back in their Johto days
    my point being Gary wasn't this kind of person originally but through trial and error and his experiences on his journey grew and shaped into that type person by the time Johto started and only continued to grow further
    BTW Thanks for the info that Gary wasn't mentioned in Episode 2 of the anime

    I think we can all agree 4kids messed up the translation of the original series, and to get the real picture of the anime, we'll have to track down a subbed version of the original series and watch it as too many important things were changed in the English dub.

    i have my thoughts about this, back in the days, Gary was a 10 years old kid, so he acted like one, specially comming from a famous family, but at the end of jhoto, he grew up, he undestood and mature, so now that he is a totally new and mature 10 years old kid, he knows that go can be the best like Ash, but he lacks a rival that pushes him to be the best, that show how a 10 yeards old kid can mature and grown up, making the mos beautyful characted development form a bratty 10yo little kid to a now mentor, in his own way, 10yo little kid.

    I'd be more inclined to think in the camp of Gary saw that his antagonistic behavior towards Ash, at least in the English dub, pushed Ash further than he would have reached without something to prove.

    there can only be one pokemon champion. he was probably more hostile in the beginning.
    he probably got nicer after ash beat him.
    in his current goal its more of a team effort. now he wants powerful team mates.

    I have to disagree on the latest Pokemon Journeys episode since no one was prepared to face Articuno since they would of brought Ice Type Pokemon with their raid battle like Goh's Dewgong or his recent caught Cloyster since they resist Ice Type Pokemon and should be immune to Sheer Cold which the Wild Articuno was using several times for the rest of the episode.
