Who remembers the Australian Schoolboy Rugby Team of the late seventies? The 1979 squad went on into football folklore. It was chocka block full of talent, the next ten to fifteen years of both the Ozzie Rugby League and Rugby Teams were comprised of most of that squad that simply HAS to be the Greatest EVER School Boy national team of ANY country. That year they went on to win the International Team of the Year award. The Award was open to ANY sports team in ANY sport in the entire world. Not a bad legend. Wally Lewis and Mick O'Connor and the great Ella brothers were among the schoolboy team.
And the Ella's, O'Connor, Tony Melrose, Michael Hawker, Chris Roche, Tony D'Arcy, Shane Nightingale and Dominic Vaughan all went on to be Wallabies. Players who missed the tour included Steve Cutler, Lloyd Walker and Eddie Jones. it was a truly great side coached by Randwick's Geoff Mould. They came at a time when Australian Rugby was in the doldrums and set the national side up for a golden era that culminated in 2 world cups in 1991 and 1999. W really need another 1977/78 schoolboys side right now.
@@brucie-of-bangor528 We're not going to get another great schoolboys side. Brisbane Grammar school just for example...with its proud, rich history and culture of sport including Rugby, is now almost wall to wall Chinamen and Indians. You know...because Australia needs to grow fiscally and because an Australian now is an economic unit of consumption and production. That's as far as any definition of an Australian can get now. Simply an economic unit. If we did get a great schoolboys team today they'd all be Fijian or south sea islanders with names you couldn't pronounce. And they'd spend their entire lives bemoaning traditional Australians as racist bigots. And most people in this country would agree with them.
5m onside, playing the ball to yourself, markers being able to ruck, no 40/20. Just a way way better game to play and watch. But what a team. Legends across the park. And they already were legends then.
@@St_AngusYoung yup. And that takes away the smaller players advantage as the bigger players tire. Now they just get replaced. I remember Gary Freeman and Steve Roach going at it a few times (in tests). Balmain teammates I think they were
So much better to watch than today's RL. Players today are too fit, too strong, too skillful and too well coached. It's magnificently boring compared to the 80s. Don't forget all the GB players would be turning up to work at building sites, factories and the like come Monday morning.
This is why I love rugby league. We fell out for a while in the last decade but the new rules and lots of tries has bought me back. Pity I can’t say the same for cricket. Bring back DK and Thommo! May as well chuck in World Championship Wrestling while I’m at it.
No, I find the NRL over the last few years to be utterly boring. They have fooled around with the rules and it is now nothing like this particular game or games of that era.
Does anyone know the game roughly from this era where the Kangaroos are playing GB or maybe it was NZ and Wally Lewis is about 10 or 15 out and he's swamped by defenders trying to put him down...but he keeps going toward the line...then one of the tacklers starts upper cutting him to the head but Wally still keeps going and eventually scores a great try with like 4 or 5 tacklers on him? I think he scores the try or he gets the penalty or something. Anyway...tough as an old boot was the King.
A lot of people in Australia didn't think Meninga was playing well enough to be selected for the '86 tour. His club form was pretty ordinary and he had a quiet Origin series. I've always wondered if he got the nod because he was such a huge drawcard in '82 - most of the English crowds had never seen such big, fast and mobile centre as big Mel before.
"They carved 'em up!" How can you not like the performance from the Oz team? The English probably would have liked Terry Lamb. Can't think of one player who didn't have a great game but especially Cleal, Dowling, Sterlo and O'Connor. Compare this game to the grubby professional tactics that have been introduced to the game by one nameless club in particular. As well as "captain's call ' , the third umpire and other garbage.
@@fibernache Lewis stated that in the 1st test at old Trafford ( crowd 51k ) the noise was that terrific that he could hardly hear his team mates speaking to him. Was lucky enough to go to all 3 . And even though it was a whitewash it put RL on the map in UK . I miss the Aussie tours , they were fantastic entertainment. By the way , the 3rd test was superb .
The commentary from the moose is first class. So lively and eccentric. A pleasure
Nothing like a bias commentery is there, was very amusing though unlike the boring ray french
Thanks so much for the upload!! Really enjoy these old games!! ..
Some amazing tackles by the great Brett Kenny.
The most naturally gifted player to ever lace a boot in my book.
@@iamthebrokerWally Lewis wasn't fit to carry his kitbag imo.
Thank you for this memory...what an amazing team this was...

Great comment. What was in the water back then? Union and RL boomed out of one team of kids.
I think the 1972 Aussie schoolboy to England ( who were unbeaten) included Les Boyd and Ian Schubert .
@J G obsessed 😂😂

what a great era.. 35 years ago; remember it like it was yesterday.
Geez you’re old
3am watching Wally and the boys with me mate Bundy. Life's good.
Brett Kenny “ The Natural”
Best player ever, I was at Cumberland Oval when he got Rookie of the year award.
How different was the footy in those days. So exciting.
Rugby League at a great time. Great players. Great characters. A really great time for Rugby League. Not even close today.
Great 👍 NRL channel ..this ..good quality videos .❤

That's real footy played by real footy players.Great memories and you cannot beat the Moose Rex Mossop's calls.

How good a caller was Rex "Moose" Mossop? I was 20 at the time and the Cane toads vs Blues was in full flight.
Garry (Jimmy) jack,,how fantastic he was on this 1986 kangaroo tour,,explosive as the last line of defence,,what a brilliant backline
Enjoying these old videos. Another great aussie touring side. Still think the 82 side was better though
Wow, Noel Cleal!
Brilliant.
Impressive skills.
The whole team really, but he's a standout
What a beast!
Remembering coming over to play for hull, then became coach as well
Crusher Cleal was beasting!
Beast Mode. Original Gangster of League.

Rex always had a touch of Roy and HG in his commentary
Love Rex Mossop calling this match .!

Look at the crowd then a few rules changed promoting Origin more then International and now look at the crowd today
I miss real scrums, 2 subs, real tackles.
10:02 remember when Great Britain looked like this?
I might take up smoking after watching this. A nice packet of Windfield Reds
It's hard to believe channel Ten sacked Ray Warren for Rex Mossop. 'Rabbits' went on to become a legend at channel Nine.
The Kangaroos were special. Meninga was a sub? Also, how much bigger did Meaning get between this tour and the 1990 tour.

today's players might be fitter and faster but for toughness these guys could eat the modern players for breakfeast ✝️👍💪💪
Bob Lindner was very fast for a forward
What an AUSTRALIAN side magnificent ❤️🇦🇺❤️
Carved them up indeed , Poms shouldn’t feel too bad because after all, they invented us.
PLUS, they got a try!
How good was Crusher!!
one ofthe great ref's of international test match rugby league''they don't make em like that anymore ''
Absolutely diabolically destroyed the opposition tday....only Rex

One had to be a superstar to make that Australian side.
Mick Oconner,Lightning Speed
Rex was too serious!
Never seen a ref try so hard to even things up.
"Purloined the ball"
Gary jack the goat fullback of all time
Totally agree, my favourite fullback back of all time,,& my favourite player of time,,garry ( Jimmy) jack, absolutely a legend, up the tigers 🐅
Peter stelo was the best. Fucken great player
Totally agree . He was superb when he was at Hull.
The poms had 14 men on the field lol 13 including the ref
Why , was you there ? Or was you at home with your crayons?

part timers vs pros
I liked Rex, but he wasnt much as a commentator and wow he was biased. B ut who cares now.
Great Britain grubs

he was bloody awful
Poor old Rex doesn’t know the difference between England and Great Britain.
He called them "the other team" a couple of times 😂
very poor reffing poms embarrassing
They weren’t the poms. They were Great Britain.
