see, I kinda disagree--i figure most people would be like, aww what a cute little knife... Then you show um a Cold Steel video on karambit use, and the call becomes a toss up between HR and Security =D
For self-defense purposes, holding a karambit in a traditional grip allows one to use it like an animal uses its claws - very effective at keeping people off of you as well as slashing your opponent to devastating effect. Of course, for most of us this is merely theoretical as most of us are normal.
Using knives for self defense is a universally stupid choice. The winner of a knife fight is the person that bleeds to death in the hospital rather than in the street. For the price of this, you can get yourself a nice pair of running shoes
LOL. "Suddenly... you are accosted by a roll of aluminum that needs cut" I love this channel. Even though this is something I would never carry, I watch ever review for Gems like this.
I can’t see myself ever using this model of knife, but the design is cool. The pocket clip is downright great. If I ever become a full-time linoleum installer, I’ll keep it in mind.
I believe the original larger"Provoke" was crowd-funded and made by Joe Caswell before CRKT adopted it. Do not know if CRKT actually built this compact version, but all praise goes to Joe Caswell.
2021: a historical moment, crkt discovers quality. now get rid of d2 or price it like a sane company, for that money i can get a quality knife in s35vn and a pizza.
while i dont like the idea of adding a few hundred to the tag for a patented mechanism with 2 parts, one of the best perks of having a snap-on contractor truck at your work everyday means you can pay $10 every month or so for a few years like you never even bought it :D
You are so spot on with the mention of improving quality and taking a design risk, NIck. Perhaps CRKT has realized they need to invest in quality in order to propel the brand forward into the future. So many cheap Chinese knives / brands have taken a bulk of that sub $50 knife business from them in recent years
I think you make an excellent point on innovation. The biggest complaint I have read/heard about the current trend in production knives is the complete lack of anything new or daring.
I just ordered one. Can't wait to get it... I just saw that Joe Caswell has introduced another model with a regular blade for EDC folks. It was introduced and shown at Shot Show 2023 as the CRKT Provoke EDC.
The regular plastic handle Provoke is on sale for $75 now. Just got it, its very cool! I wish the smaller Compact was the same price, its almost double more :(. I guess because the $75 models are plastic handle and this is metal handle which is about the same price as the larger model's price when it comes in a metal handle.
I know everyone says you can’t edc a karambit but I have since I got this and it works very well for edc I am surprised how nice for a karambit this one is
I've got the full size "first responder" version with the glassbreaker built in. It's totally impractical and I never take it anywhere but it's just neat and fun to play with.
The best claw knife for utility use that I tried is ( pretty ironically ) cold steel tiger claw. Very low edge angle , XHP or s35vn that is treated very well, and a small enough recurve so it isn't a complete tragedy to re sharpen
I would love to see this kind of pocket clip on some other designs. I feel like there is something similar on an italian knife, but I cant recall which one. It's a good idea.
Sheesh, that gap between the edge and the frame makes me wonder how many people are going to slice the hell out of their fingers, or worse. They really need to figure that out before someone seriously hurts themselves.
I got one of these when they first came out. Glad I have it but don't carry it much. Tried to disassemble it to clean and lube, seems impossible to do.
You should compare the size to the original Provoke. That would have made sense lol. Edit: props to CRKT for actislly trying to do something different.
I have a clone that came with kydex. Because of my martial arts background. I love the design, it is a great weapon. You can use it without being lethal. I would not buy crkt way overpriced for materials. Also its a pocket killer. As far as usefulness as a knife it's not. For it to be practical you need the kydex sheath. This is a job specific type of knife to me.
Pocket deploy it like an Emerson wave type knife at your own risk. The way the blade is curved, there is a good chance that it will cut right through the front of your pocket. I found this out the hard way...
A thought I had about using the Emerson Wave technique to deploy it: Since the hawk bill will be opening down into your pocket as you draw it, you’re probably very likely to slice your pocket wide open. Especially in the panic of a fight.
Well, I have accidentally sliced my FINGERS w a regular Emerson model twice. This was in a non emergency. Imagine trying to use the Emerson Wave as you are grappling, or are on your back or something.
The Doug marcaida talon from 5.11 (of all places) actually does a wave opener style karambit really well, as doesn't fox knives' karambits, one of which (the dart) was also a DM design. The Talon has the benefit of not actually being a wave opener and uses its own style of on-pocket opening that feels a lot better IMO. I don't see it causing any injuries unless you're doing something terribly wrong. I honestly think that the DM talon is a better knife for your money than the provoke. A more practical blade, better clip that holds the ring high enough to grab, and easier maintenance all make for a much better EDC knife.
I find it funny you give crkt credit for overpricing then using the cheapest materials they can find. But no giving credit to coldsteel that makes affordable knives in every price range with a great lock. Crkt makes a good lock that charges $100 for a $20 knife. The deadbolt could be a star if crkt wasn't so crazy.
The funny thing about the karambit is that you need a ton of practice (preferably with a trainer blade) to be able to use it for offense or defense. Trying to use a live blade karambit without training is a great way to hurt yourself real bad (like cutting arteries, tendons and nerves bad). A knife would be a much better offensive or defensive tool and can be used without practice by almost anyone.
@@adksherm The karambit is a knife but a knife is not a karambit, that’s why when people say knife they mean a small straight or outward curved sharpened blade. When people say sword they’re talking about a very large sharpened or unsharpened single or double edged knife. When people say cutlass they’re talking about a very large sharpened single edged knife. When people say dirk or dagger they’re talking about a sharpened or unsharpened double edged fixed blade knife. When people say machete they’re talking about a large wide and thin sharpened single edged knife. And when people say karambit they’re talking about a ringed inward curved sharpened single or double edged knife. All these knives are so different from a normal knife that they’re almost always called by name instead of just calling them knives. Knife terms are actually very weird, confusing and none of the terms are set in stone (Just try reading up on knife blade shapes and prepare to be very confused)
I think the exact opposite is true. It is much more difficult to be effective and not hurt yourself with a more traditional style knife. With a karambit, held in the tradiational way (with the blade down), all you need to know is how to throw a punch to be effective at damaging your opponent. I would always recommend to anyone who wants to use a knife for defensive purposes to get training, but if I had to go into a fight with no training and either a karambit or a similar sized traditional knife, it would be the former every time.
@@tuerney420 I’ve seen some inexperienced people try to handle trainer karambits and no one ever thinks about hitting (stabbing) with the blade in the reversed grip Hitting (stabbing) with the blade in reversed grip can be done by an untrained person but only with a traditional style karambit a modern karambit like the crkt provoke requires some unnatural wrist movements that needs to be trained. But things I see everyone do when first holding a karambit is putting the ring between their first and second knuckle, putting their wrong foot forward, swinging the blade backwards, putting their arm in front of the cutting edge, not knowing where to whip the blade, not knowing where the important tendons, muscles and arteries are located, not thinking about tip alignment when stabbing in a forward grip and putting their pinkie through the ring The karambit looks like an easy weapon to use but it’s actually one of the hardest and it will give you a lot of pain and discomfort when training with it (like having very sore tendons and not being able to use your hands properly for days)
IN ONE OF THE BATMAN MOVIES, DID HE NOT THROW A STAR AT ONE OF THE BAD GUYS? Not sure but seems Nick needs to carry a surikin star for a week, cut your nails with it, slice steak, and peel an apple!!!!

Laughed out loud there
Yeah, many of Nick’s comments are truly LOL funny.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate CRKT for what they try to pull off? It's not always awesome, but SOMEONE'S got to try.
It was a guy named Joe Caswell out of California that came up with this and sold it to crkt. It's definitely an innovative folder design.

You’ve got to be prepared for those linoleum-fitting emergencies.
Been following you for years, love your sense of humor, and the non tactical knife assessments.

Nick... It's time to make a "stunt pocket". Probably with mesh and canvas, or even clear vinyl.
Or just have a pair of pants to use as a prop.
That would fit in the collection perfectly right next to a Dragon handled dagger, or an Orange County Choppers switchblade
Underneath the katana you bought at the mall and a Klingon weapon from Star Trek
Where oh where were you able to find an Orange County Choppers switchblade? That's definitely a bucket list knife for sure
That is the most self-defense oriented knife I've ever seen. Great job again, Joe.
You've got to love the excitement of not knowing when it's going to open. What fun...

Idk if I can justify 200 for d2 regardless of the unique mechanism....a no brainer if it was s45vn or even s30 I'd be good with the price tag.
