My husband’s cousin has lived in California for many years but plans to retire in her home state. We have been wanting to give her a memento that would commentate her time here with us & this map idea is perfect! Thank you for all the ideas and keep that caffeine poring into your creative cup!
Oh. I saw in the comments below someone asking a about a roadmap... wouldn’t a rough map of major highways or rivers (or both) be a cool free motion motif for this?! Even stars marking your home town or major cities and points of interest? I love your videos, Rob. You and Jenny are the best! I get lots of creative ideas from you two!
Once again, you have set my imagination buzzing, this time about my beloved Texas and what a fantastic applique it will make. (Because let's be serious: how great is that shape??!!) I love how your sessions combine technique with boundary-busting gonzo verve. I always come away inspired and upbeat (not cowed like I do with other projects).
We cannot wait to see the great state of Texas as a State Map Quilt! Have lots of fun sewing, and be sure to share your creation with all of us at Man Sewing! :) Thanks so much for tuning in!
What a brilliant idea! I have seen lots of other state crafty hall hangings but this is the best. I think it would be super cute to add a heart over our home town too and maybe as part of the quilting to add adjacent state lines. I love how you added topography to the state. No easy task with California. Thanks for sharing!
I’m in Festus Mo, and I’m thrilled to see the Magnificent Missouri Quilt!! I’m starting it tomorrow cause I have a pack of camouflage strips for Missouri! Thank you for making that quilt!!!
Another terrific video, Rob, thank you! I especially appreciated the free motion quilting information on this quilt, was wondering why you cut the fabric first, then I understood why.
Thank you for a wonderfully inspiring tutorial. I'm making two, Mississippi, my birth state and Georgia, my now home state. I truly enjoy your entertaining and instructive videos.
Awesome tutorial Rob! I always love your enthusiasm & great ideas! I’m glad you used KF Fabrics! Thx for the video & please keep your great ideas coming!
I love the idea of a state quilt, and I like your version very much! When I hopefully get to spend some time in the US to study, I might end up doing one like this.
I was thinking it would look better with blues for the ocean, neutrals for mountains or greens for forests. Your thinking was correct. Blues would look gorgeous around Hawaii.
Wow! I love your tutorials : enthusiasm, inspiration and technique : great. The coordinating strips are super effective for a large outline. My home county of North Tyneside will definitely pop. Thank you.
This looks like fun. I might try this as a backing some time. Also wouldn’t it be fun to put a circle or star on the map for your home town and maybe the capital.
I thought I saw a Texas wildflower jellyroll on Missouri Star Quilt Company, and that’s where I order most of my quilting online fabrics. We have the Quilt Hause I think it’s called here in New Braunfels that sells wonderful Texas themed fabric but don’t think they sell jelly rolls. I’m new to quilting and Rob has given me the courage to give it a try to machine quilting, proving you can teach an old 75 year old dog a new trick
Judy Moen she does have them, on sale for 35.99. eBay has one as well, 31.99. I buy more from Missouri star than any where else. I too enjoy Rob and Jenny’s tutorials. Been to 2 retreats there. She’s awesome and so is her establishments. Many stores, many themes. The town is alive again thanks to her and her family. I love new braunfels. Pretty town. I live 30 miles south of Fort Worth.
Linda if you get around to making a Texas Quilt, you have to post it please. I’m in the middle of making a birthday quilt for my 93 year old Aunt in Michigan. Then I’m going to try and tackle Texas
Your background construction reminds me of Lego! I am going to try British Columbia some day. Hmmm... forest green and brown for the mountains, tan and purple for the ranch lands and wineries in the southern and middle interior of the province, and blues for the oceans. All the little islands in the Gulf and the north coast might be tricky. My province is beautiful but complicated! Lol.
Kelley I was thinking of BC too. All the Fiords along the coast would be interesting too. I think I would put Haida Gwaii, Vancouver Island and a couple of the Gulf Islands. I would use grape and or wine fabrics to represent the Okanogan and the Cowichan Valley. For the quilting I would include the major river systems done in a specialty thread.
When I try this I am going to copy in reverse image onto a piece of stabilizer then sew that on to the fabric and cut it out. That way I have no raw edges and I don't have to do a needle turn applique. That's my lazy way.
I am from Ohio. The minute I saw your California done and all the pretty greens and blues of the ocean and the sky my mind went to Ohio State scarlet and gray making my own strips of Ohio State material and then the center create a block O and put a buckeye Leaf in it I don't know if I can do it but I've got it done in my mind. I'm sure it will be a striking quilt now if I can get it from brain the fingers I'll be alright
Rob, if you place your stiletto flat on the fabric, when you push the safety pin through the fabric letting it come up against the stiletto, you will be able to close pin without pricking fingers.
I think since I have a nice machine and a machine I bought long ago at Wal-Mart that I use for questionable/not really recommended projects and use the print out as a foundation piece and sew the strips to it and trim the template
I was thinking the same with foundation piecing. Also laughed at your 'questionable' comment...my newer Juki will never see this project but my older Singer will be happy to come out of the closet :)
My homes State Washington n my home state now South Carolina. Originally from Canada would like to do my Provence. Planning on retiring in Florida, hmmm, I better get busy, lol
I’m curious as to why you would chose to fold under 1/4” on the edges instead of using a fusible. I would think the irregular edges of a design such as a state would lend itself well to using a fusible. What am I missing? Love this project!
Going to do this for North Carolina for a quilting friend. I think I will use a blue background and cut out the water on the right hand side of the state. Any suggestions?
I've actually managed to go to the website and print out a picture I like. 😊. I'm wondering if you use the scraps you cut off as they look rather large , do you?
That's awesome, Doreen! I used the scraps from the full size quilt to create the Missouri wallhanging if that helps! The rest of the paper I recycled. Have fun sewing!
Can you please speak more to the software that you used to get the state applique? I have tried to locate it and I am having lots of difficulty. thank you.
Hi Lorraine! I'm so sorry to hear that. Here is the link to posterarzor. www.posterazor.sourceforge.net To begin, find an image of your state and save it to your computer. Then, upload the image to posterazor and enlarge the image to suit your needs. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you! :)
I love your you tubes! However my order arrived from the missouri quilt company and items are missing. For those who order items from them, please be careful and check all items. Measure all the fabric should you order any.
Hello! Thank you so much for tuning in! I am so sorry to hear about the issues with your order. Could you please email marketing@missouriquiltco.com with your order information, and we will take a look at your order? Thank you!
Hi Linda! Ok, First save the State Map you wish to use as a JPG on your computer. Now time for posterazor, open the app, and import your JPG. Use the app settings to control your size, I like a .25 overlap on all pages for taping together. It then sends the final file to adobe as a multi page pdf for printing, so make you sure do hit save on the last window. Hope this helps! -- Rob
Another fabulous quilt. This will also be wonderful to make for someone who has moved away from home. Thanks for sharing.

That's a great idea, Elizabeth! Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks Rob for sharing how important it is to deconstruct and construct the background fabric. Your tips are invaluable to me as a beginning quilter!
I’m in Festus Mo, and I’m thrilled to see the Magnificent Missouri Quilt!! I’m starting it tomorrow cause I have a pack of camouflage strips for Missouri! Thank you for making that quilt!!!
That is awesome! I love the name "Magnificient Missouri"! Can't wait to see what you create! Free free to share with the Man Sewing Facebook page! :)
Thank you for another great tutorial Rob. I enjoy your enthusiasm as well as your humility.
Another terrific video, Rob, thank you! I especially appreciated the free motion quilting information on this quilt, was wondering why you cut the fabric first, then I understood why.
Thanks for the video Rob especially for sewing the edges around the map before appliquéing it to the background fabric so there is no raw edges.😊😍👍🏽
I'm from Rhode Island, smallest state; shouldn't be too long a project. Great videos, thanx.
Thank you for the chuckle. Remember great things come in small packages.
I'm also from Rhode Island. That jagged coastline and all the islands. will need to simplify.
Catherine Wolfson Lots of ocean fabric from Joannes for our Ocean State.
Frost poetry LOL
I love the idea of a state quilt, and I like your version very much! When I hopefully get to spend some time in the US to study, I might end up doing one like this.
Awesome! I'm excited to see what you create! And you can use this same technique to create a map of your country, too. Have fun sewing!
Really like the drills piece...I can see how practice is so important. Thanks!
Cool Tutorial! I'm going to do my home state of Hawaii on a nice batik background of blues, greens and purples!
That sounds awesome! Feel free to share a photo of it with the Man Sewing Facebook or Instagram page. We can't wait to see it!

Yay for the simplicity of Colorado. :D
Very cool! xoxo from sunny 🌞 Arizona. 78/46f today
Thx Rob...that website is excellent for posters...it has given me lots of new ideas for future quilts
This looks like fun. I might try this as a backing some time. Also wouldn’t it be fun to put a circle or star on the map for your home town and maybe the capital.
Really a GREAT project!!! Thanks, Rob...
Yea!! Missouri!!
I love this idea that is so fantastic quilt! Thank you so much for your creativity.
love it, Florida will look awesome
Texas would make a pretty good size quilt, ☺️great tutorial, thank you so much for teaching us new ways to quilt.
Linda R. Same here, I think I will try to do a Texas lap top, I have a leftover white on white layer cake, just need a Texas themed jelly roll
Judy Moen I looked on eBay, and there is a Texas wildflower jelly roll, 👍🏼

Michelle Tothill good idea about the roads.
That sounds like an awesome project, Kelley! We can't wait to see it! :)
It's in my "someday" list! Lol.
I wish you put up a link of all the states in a quilt size, but I love this idea. Maybe I'll make pillows as practice!
Love it - my home state of West Virginia would be a challenge - not many straight lines - but it would look amazing!
Hi Kathleen! West Virginia would be awesome! Can't wait to see what you create!
When I try this I am going to copy in reverse image onto a piece of stabilizer then sew that on to the fabric and cut it out. That way I have no raw edges and I don't have to do a needle turn applique. That's my lazy way.

That sounds like an awesome project! Please keep us posted on how it turns out! We know you will make an awesome Buckeye State quilt!
Sounds gorgeous
You can do it!!
Imagine taking this up a step and doing this as trepunto too!
Rob, if you place your stiletto flat on the fabric, when you push the safety pin through the fabric letting it come up against the stiletto, you will be able to close pin without pricking fingers.
Great idea, great tutorial. This would be a good time to use raw edge appliqué.
On my to do list! Thanks for the tutorial!
OUTSTANDING. WELL DONE.
Love !!
One could print your state on freezer paper so you could iron it onto your pieced fabric.☺
So cool!
This is so fun!!
I wonder if there is some tropical foliage jelly rolls it would be so cool for Florida plus the gulf and ocean blue green
I think since I have a nice machine and a machine I bought long ago at Wal-Mart that I use for questionable/not really recommended projects and use the print out as a foundation piece and sew the strips to it and trim the template

Rob you know there is a tool you can use to close those pins and save your fingers!!
Thanks!
Hi from Missouri you must be visiting Jenny
My homes State Washington n my home state now South Carolina. Originally from Canada would like to do my Provence. Planning on retiring in Florida, hmmm, I better get busy, lol
I’m curious as to why you would chose to fold under 1/4” on the edges instead of using a fusible. I would think the irregular edges of a design such as a state would lend itself well to using a fusible. What am I missing? Love this project!
Rob, I may have missed it. Why did you not use heat and bond to secure the state on the background?
Going to do this for North Carolina for a quilting friend. I think I will use a blue background and cut out the water on the right hand side of the state. Any suggestions?
Can you do a road map quilt tutorial please?
Thanks for the suggestion! We'll pass it along to Rob! Thanks for tuning in!
I sewed one for my friend called Home is where the heart is...her house was a heart on the map. I really enjoyed it.
Does Rob not read these comments himself? 😕
Hi, Rob 😀 Where can I buy some of the Man Sewing t-shirts you wear in your videos? I'd really like to get some! Thanks so much.
Hi Tom! You can find all of the Man Sewing swag here: www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/browse?q=man%20sewing Thanks for tuning in!
Man Sewing: Awesome! I just purchased a T-shirt 😀
Woohoo!! Thank you! :)
Really clever idea! I don't have a printer, so it would be difficult for me to get the state map, love the idea though, wish I could make one myself.
Joanne Fountain what state do you live in? I'll print yours and mail it to you.
Hi Joanne! Have you checked with your local library? Or a print shop? Hope this helps!
Hi Sandi! Thank you so much for this kind offer! It warms my heart to see such generosity!
You could just cut up a state road map, if it is close to the size you want to do.
Respect the blade! Haha wear a glove please, I about had a heart attack.
Do you think you can share a link to which specific California shape image you used??
Can you please speak more to the software that you used to get the state applique? I have tried to locate it and I am having lots of difficulty. thank you.
Hi Lorraine! I'm so sorry to hear that. Here is the link to posterarzor. www.posterazor.sourceforge.net To begin, find an image of your state and save it to your computer. Then, upload the image to posterazor and enlarge the image to suit your needs. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you! :)
What website do you use to get the individual state maps that can be printed to the size needed? I don't see the link in the supply list.
Rob, I'm making an I spy quilt in a state shape. I'm wondering why you pieced the background. Please explain. Thank you. (Sewing in Michigan) 23:21
This is great if you have States we dont we have Counties which are not as nicely & uniquely shaped.
Hi Dawn! you can definitely use this for counties and even countries, too! Hope you have fun sewing!
I always do Rob lol
I really really like this idea but I can’t get to that website. Page not found. I saw where someone else did though.
Hi Cynthia! Sorry about that. Try this link: posterazor.sourceforge.net and see if that works! Have fun sewing!
In case anyone is having trouble I tried looking it up on google and it came right up.
Does cutting on paper dull the rotary blade?
Hi Katherine! It does, so I suggest using a blade that is at the end of its life, right before you change over to a new one. Thanks for tuning in!
What foot are you using. And which Baby Lock machine?
Hi Stephanie! Rob is using a standard foot and he uses a Baby Lock Jane machine when he is filming. Thanks for tuning in!
HOW DO I GET THE STATE OUTLINE?
What machine do you sew with?
Hi Sherri! Rob uses a Baby Lock Jane when he is filming.
Thank you!
How do I get a shape of Missouri to transfer to the posterazor site for printing? I found both sites but not how to incorporate them.
Hi Linda! Ok, First save the State Map you wish to use as a JPG on your computer. Now time for posterazor, open the app, and import your JPG. Use the app settings to control your size, I like a .25 overlap on all pages for taping together. Thanks for your response, Rob. When I followed your directions my computer said that I cannot get this on my computer. :-(
Can you make your videos a little longer? maybe let us watch all the way thru a project.
