My husband and I made a mosaic quilt top years ago and it was a great project to work together on. I have always loved quilting and was thrilled when the pattern appealed to him as an engineer and he wanted to take part in the project. This video brought back some happy memories. And you've made a gorgeous quilt.
I just rewatched this video. I have some charm packs. Even tho they are smaller than the layer cakes. You used in this video. The sequencing is the same. So I'm going to be using this design. For my charm packs, I think it will still come out really nice. Thanks for this video, it's very helpful. And the way you explained it.Is very easy to follow along. In making my own quilt.
I have quilted since I was a small girl, learned all my mothers bad habits. I have recently started following your tutorials and I LOVE this one! Began teaching my granddaughter last year. We're snowbirds, having a small time back in WA state to sew with her. Bought her a sewing machine for her 21st birthday and we sew virtually together on weekend's now. She's 3rd yr university student and works part time. This will be our next project together and her first actual quilt. She's made scrappy squares for throw pillows, pillow cases, bins. We've even made face masks together virtually. its time for a bigger project and this will be perfect. looks complex, but your technique breaks it down so well. Thank you.
I have been watching tutorials and reading about quilting for 10 years. I don't know anyone who quilts so I've been on my own. WHY have I never seen the jump stitch idea!!! Holy smokes. No more starting and stopping for my different designs in different blocks. You are a life saver! Thank you! (and I fee kinda stupid for never thinking of this on my own).
This is great - you make it so easy - “finished is better than perfect “- that’s what Jenny says too - and I agree . Bet it would look great in black and white patterned fabrics
I am now in the middle of making this quilt. I have all the piecing finished, I've sashed the verticles, just haven't accomplished the final sashing across. I must say that my brain had a very hard time with this. It is a quilt of love or I would have thrown it across the room several times! I know I stacked it properly so I would sew it together in the correct order, yet when I checked my work, there was a mistake and I had to pick out stitches and resew. It's a good thing I pray while I sew! I got a lot of prayers in that quilt. I guess that's good. I finally came up with a method of putting a pin in the top left corner of each piece so I'd know what went where. It will be easy from here on, because it's just sashing between the rows, putting on the border and adding the backing. Oh, I thought you'd be interested, I'm adding a scripture to the border - I Cor. 13:12. My friend is ill. Thank you for a REAL challenge for my brain. Maybe I'll send you a picture.
This is such an incredible idea! I am thinking “cantaloupe colors” would be fun: oranges, yellows, greens & brown. And my favorite fabric is definitely batiks. Another fantastic lesson by an amazing instructor. I’m new to quilting and Rob’s videos have taught me so much. Thanks for sharing your gift Rob!
This might sound odd but thanks for acknowledging that the lines won't match perfectly. I've seen many quilt tutorials & patterns where those lines just can't line up (because hypotenuses) but they don't mention that. So someone making the quilt (who didn't know about the math bits) was destined to wonder why their corners weren't lined up. By addressing it up front, folks can let go the expectation & just love the process.
Oh - & I think I may do this with the dragonfly dance line. I got the layer cake when it was the deal of the day. It's so beautiful, I don't want to cut it too small. Since it's mostly non-directional, I think it would be beautiful in this - perhaps with off-white, pale green sashing...
LOVE hearing your explanation about things...and the " like yeah". But also your technic (like carpenter style) but you make it all fun. This will be a great style design for my grandson THANK YOU.
This is awesome! I have a Kaffe lipstick that would look cool, but I have been collecting Scooby Doo prints for my grown son that would look great this way too! Love your excitement and encouragement to FMQ.
Brilliant design and piecing. Thank you, now I may be able to use this pattern and make 2 twin quilts for my grand children by Christmas...Love the design :)
I love this quilt Rob I think Jewel colours in pinks, reds & yellows with black sashing would look amazing. It reminds me of abstract stained glass windows in modern churches.
Jenn B. I want to take this and add a cross in the middle! Maybe a wood grained looking fabric? And I wanted rays of light coming off the cross...What do you think?
I like the greens, blues, and purples. I would like to try one of these. I read a book about slash and stack.or whack and stack which seems like this but you have cleared up my misunderstandings...Mardi Gras colors would be cool with either a gold sash or black one.
I am in love with this design!! Thank you for sharing it and the awesome tutorial :) I discovered your channel within the last month and really enjoy your personality and teaching style!
browns and beige's thanks so much for sharing, you make it look so simple so really going to try, only quilted a pot holder having problems with my table runner during learning had a stroke and can not remember how to finish my border
I love how this looks it is a great design and great tutorial. Can I be a brat and say row 3 box 4 and row 4 box 4 seem to be match match. 🤔😕 Oh well it is a quilt I want to make. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Thanks for sharing Rob, I would like to try this but I’m not that good at sewing yet. I have a sewing machine and I’m still working on trying to learn how to use patterns to make clothes for my litttle granddaughter.
I love this quilt. It looks super easy to make. I just need to get my honeybun stripping and I'll be ready to start. Thanks for another great video Rob. you are so talented. By the way, I made your throw from one of your videos and it turned out super great, very warm, and pretty.
Hi Rob , I love your tutorials and am going tom start the slice and swap in the New Year for a gift , do you think you can post the finished size of the quilts when you put the tutorials up. It would be really useful . Thank you and Happy New Year
Hi Julia! Thank you for the feedback! We will be trying our hardest to post or to tell the finished size of the quilts in the tutorial. Thanks for tuning in!
I was captivated by your mention of creating a "mosaic look". My crazy designer brain went immediately to the idea of intentionally creating a mosaic design using the same techniques. With a little extra design work one could create a mosaic image on the quilt top. Nothing ornate, because the pieces are too big for that, but a simple geometric or maybe a tree pattern would be pretty do-able. Hmmm ...
I love when it doesn't have to be 'perfect' ... did a diamond dash that almost drove me crazy .. going to go pick a layer cake from my stash and try this one! Thanks for all you do for us! What size is this quilt as is?
I have some Stonehenge Tiles layer cakes that I going to use with beige sashing. Makes me think of the beach (sea glass), mosaic, stained glass and will be perfect for my son and his wife in Massachusetts. I've collected sea glass all my life, this just reminds me of tiles. It's just before Christmas 2017, so this will be a king size bed quilt for Christmas gift 2018. Thoughts about size Rob (or anyone)? Rows across? down? Borders, backing and binding?
Rob, my son is coming home from Spain with his girlfriend (he quilts and sews when he is home with me and has his own Janome HD3000) Anyway....lol they are wild land fire fighters, Hot Shot Crew out of Utah and is helping a crew in Spain this last month (donated his time).....theyboth ask if I would help his girlfriend with her first quilts....first sewing....she has 2 babies due into the family in January......I think this pattern would be great in baby prints or soft colors for a baby quilt............thank you as always for inspiring us.
Hi Janet! Thank you for sharing your story. Your son sounds like a great guy! I hope you have fun creating those baby quilts! Keep me posted on how they turn out.
Hallo Rob Das ist ein toller Quilt 🥰. Welche Masse hat die Decke? Auch würde mich interessieren, wie die Decke von hinten aussieht . Danke und liebe Grüsse aus der Schweiz 🇨🇭
Have to have a go at this.... Help, I can't the video that you used a presser foot that allowed you to run a tape through a slot within it using a double needle. My problem is finding that foot, it seemed such a nifty little tool. Thanks
Hi Tammy! Rob uses an edge guide to make sure his seams are .25". The one he uses came with his machine, but he also uses this one: www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/67125/brewer/-/seam-guide-magnetic-large-with-handle
Good morning Dec. 4 and cold freezing rain I am here working my fingers on a pair socks for someone. Can I ask you and the others wonderful sewers can you do easier quilts I am still learning lol

I think I’ll choose shades of green. I kept thinking about green while watching you. Good job btw.👍
One of my favorite!
Hi Rob! I love the "freestyle" cutting of the 10 inch squares and no pressure to be perfect. Beautiful finished quilt!
Hi Rob..just done the first block of this quilt for a friend's 60th birthday present .
Inspired me to start quilting again, truly a beautiful, modern, little fuse and quick quilt. ❤ it!!
This is great - you make it so easy - “finished is better than perfect “- that’s what Jenny says too - and I agree . Bet it would look great in black and white patterned fabrics
You have so much energy and it is contagious.

Thanks Rob. I love it. I think I'm going to try it with red and purple batiks...wish me luck. Have a wonderful day.

I really love this quilt, thank you Rob! I think I would do mine in greens and blues, mine and my husbands favorite colors! 💚💙
Neat quilt! I think it would look amazing using jewel toned fabrics and black sashing. Loved the extra at the end where you showed the quilting!

This is awesome! I have a Kaffe lipstick that would look cool, but I have been collecting Scooby Doo prints for my grown son that would look great this way too! Love your excitement and encouragement to FMQ.
Enjoying the stained glass look. I think I would use red blue and green

if you sew block one and then block four on the same white strip- you can just cut between. then add both 2 to 1 and 3 to 4. then do the center line.
I love this quilt. I will definitely have to try to make it!
Love this quilt! So much fun! I am making this one!!!! Thanks!
