I absolutely love Man Sewing. I just came across this video while learning about trapunto quilting. I have found a dinosaur panel that this technique is just perfect for. Of all the videos I have researched this is by far the best one for trapunto. Mr. Rob you are the best!!
I am a beginner quilter, and I was so happy to hear your comment about moving the quilt while quilting. I am on a domestic machine and sometimes can't see what I am doing if I don't turn the quilt. I always felt I was doing something wrong. Now I know it is okay as long as I stop and the needle is down!
Am doing a quilt for my step grand son, he loves dirt bike' s so i looked up panel quilting and found Rob man sewing , thank you. I now know what to do with my panels trapunto quilting looks fabulous thank you for the tutorial on this method , loved it
Gee, I really enjoyed that tutorial. I have heard of Trapunto, but never knew what it was, thank you. I’ll be trying that for sure. I have a bunch of panels for Christmas. How nice that would be. Awesome Rob. TY
Omg!!!! Honest to God I never knew or heard tell of this technique before, but as I was lying in my bed the other night, I actually thought, “hmmmmmmm, I wonder can you quilt with an embossed effect?”.......... obviously you can.....thank you for sharing your creativity xxx...........PS, you will always have our attention 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Xx
I purchased this panel just before Christmas for the love of the scene. I was very excited when I found your video tutorial. So much so that I have since called the quilt shop to hold 4 more panels for me. This is a new technique for me to try on a panel I love. Thank You for sharing !!
Hi Rob Love this panel you are always so interesting to watch, not sure if I missed you saying this if not I hope you don't mind me making this comment for those watching to drop their feed dogs such a simple thing that many do not know
So pretty! I've added it to my list of sewing projects. I've seen trapunto before, but not for a long time. I do need to try it. And if you want snow, we have it! Forget the mountains and come on to Ohio! We sure do have snow here. Right now, at 7am, it's minus 5 degrees in my area. And we have the added bonus of Ice Fishing on Lake Erie! The fishing shanties will be popping up all over very soon! I'll be in my Warm sewing room all winter, but you can try fishing out on the ice! Brrr!!!
Rob this was exceptional tutorial. You video taping of your lesson is perfect and your directions clear and concise. Continue to make more helpful beginner videos. Thank you 🇨🇦
I think im in love with you!! I have learned so much from you in the week l stumbled across your videos. I haven't done anything because all I do is watch and re-watch these videos. Maybe a little too much caffeine..she must be hard to get a word in..but she is sure lucky to have you. Absolutely wonderful and easy techniques. This is May 2021
I’ve done trapunto work by hand, but not using free motion quilting. I love the look. As I have several panels waiting for inspiration, this technique would be a great idea for at least one of them. If all goes well I may just get some UFO projects completed. Thank you again, Rob👏🏻👍🏻
Love your technique ! I did one years ago, by hand, Just something to do while watching t.v. I hope to try machine trapunto but I only have a regular OLD sewing machine (Kenmore from 1960) I did mine without even knowing trapunto had a name! I just "winged it"- your video was most informative. thanks.
Ron, this video on trapunto could not have come at a better time. I am actually working on a fabric panel with flower arrangements in flower vases. I know that I will be doing this to highlight the vases but sounds like I should include some of the flowers. Than you. I love watching your tutorials. Keep sharing.
I picked up a panel 2 days ago with intent to make a wall hanging for my niece tomorrow. Came across this vid today (and never heard of Trapunto before!) feels so meant-to-be to find out about this method. You are a gem!
Your explanation of how and why to choose certain areas and enhance them with thread color, flange on the border and trapunto was so helpful. The only trapunto I knew about was sewing around the area and then opening the fabric from the back and stuffing added loft batting then stitching that opening back closed! This was great to see a layering of loft first and the effect it creates. Loved it, nice tutorial ❣️ Thank you!
I picked up on the Pfaff quote. They are really great and it is sad that the original company is gone. I have 2 original Pfaff machines and they are still going strong. Thanks for all the great tutorials.
This just what I’ve been looking for to do with a baby comforter. I’m new to sewing, quilting and appliquéing. Trying to learn all at once and this did it. Thank you.
Your videos are awesome and they make me want to try this technique. I love piecing but the quilting part overwhelmed me. The way you explain stuff is great. Thank you!
To Lisann, for highlighting the snow, I would use the clear "holographic" thread. It is clear but with a colored (red, blue, green and sometimes gold) shimmer that pics up light and reflects it without changing the colors beneath. Great idea, I did not think about that until you asked how!
Love this type of quilting and yes, there are lots of very beautiful quilt panels out there. Rob, get yourself a pair of bent embroidery scissors for cutting those tight cutting areas of the batting.
I just looked up the term trapunto, and it tweaked my interest. I saw your RUclips video as a reference and example, so I clicked on it. I really love how you present this technique, and I haven’t looked to see if you have other videos, but I am hopping that you are still making more videos, to the present time. Thanks for this video, and God Bless!!
Trapunto usage of batting I’ve been doing awhile for my appliqués sometimes doubled plus sandwich batting, but this is another great example of it being used for scenery! Love the panel with the yellow border and the duck bill scissors too. Also your quilting in the water is very interesting! Thanks so much for a great easy example!
I inherited a pair of “duckbill” scissors and never knew how to use them. Thanks for teaching me something in addition to the subject of the tutorial!!
Thanks for the panel trapunto tutorial. Lots of great tips. Its always fun to watch you sew. I'm encouraged to try this technique on some panels I have in my stash waiting to come alive.
This is my favorite video of yours! Always learn something new from you but this has me so excited I’m going to bed so I can try it as soon as I wake up! Thank you very much!!!
This was so informative! What a neat way to get a great effect! I am still working on the free motion quilting, but I understand practice makes perfect. It was great to see you in Houston.
Beautiful job! It's so nice to learn some new skills, and so nice to see tutorials involving panels. I've seen so many lovely panels but, being fairly new to quilting, I never really knew how to work with them. Thank you so much for instruction and inspiration! I hope to see more on using panels in the future! You do beautiful work!
Thank you for this tutorial, the timing is perfect. I bought a beautiful panel when I was in Canmore on Christmas Eve and was not sure how to best quilt it. Your have given me some great ideas.
Love this! Love your enthusiasm! I have a panel coming and thanks to you I now have the courage to try these techniques! Thank you so much for generously sharing your talent!
Thanks Rob that was a wonderful demonstration I never understood what the technique was before. That was a great trip about practicing on a panel I never thought of that and for learning how to applique as well great tips all the way around thank you so much.
That was wonderfully informative. What a great teacher you are. You've inspired me with enough knowledge and confidence, to and give my beautiful owl panel a go. Thank you.
Thank you for the help. I have some beautiful farm panels and don’t want to ruin them. I imagine doing this with the barns and fluffy sheep already. You’re great! Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and your family from chilly NE Penna!
Thank you, Rob, for this very helpful video. I have 2 panels with the musical instruments and wanted to highlight them, but wasn't sure how to do it. I really would have liked to see a close-up of your final creation, just to study it a bit. Best wishes for you and your family this holiday season, keep on teaching, you are so good at what you do.
Great idea Rob! I have 2 panels that I love but wasn't sure what to do with them. One is the manger scene and its a beautiful panel. I think I'll try this and give it as a gift next year....maybe ;-)
Just like too say Many thanks through out this year Rob for all of your Amazing tutorials and great hints and tips and many more to come in 2018 (smiles n huggss) Jan uk
I enjoyed watching "except for" you talk to fast for an old woman. I have "A lot" of Horse Panels that would look beautiful doing this way!! But I think that I'm along way from being able to do this. And I have never heard of "Trapunto" until this video. I would like to someday try this method but I haven't conquered the free motion quilting yet. God Bless
Hi Anne. It's possible to slow the video down by clicking on the three dots in the upper right hand corner of the video. Then select playback speed which will give you different options for speed. You could try 0.75x to start. Hope that helps!
I have questions. 1- when you do the extra batting for puffiness, you put it in behind the panel and sew around the scene part you want puffy, then cut out around it. You just have the panel over the batting and sew with the batting down on the machine (bottom of the sewn piece)? That doesn’t cause any problem? And 2 - when you switched threads (from the blue to the yellow) what in the world did you do? You said you tied it off (new yellow to old blue) but skipped right over that whole good hint step. I love this quilt, and have several I look forward to doing this with as I, too, Love panels!
I liked the panel so much that I ordered one for myself. I'm working on it now, but wish you had showed close ups of the finished quilted panel. How did you quilt the sky? Did you stipple it? Thank you for the video, it was inspiring. :)
I just started watching your tutorials, Rob, they are great! It is not clear to me what you did here. After cutting away the first batting around the church, trees and snow, did you add another layer of batting with the backing? I get that "Trapunto" means wanting certain parts of the quilt to stand out, but would that mean that the rest of the quilt doesn't have batting, at all? Thanks for your enthusiasm in quilting and sewing!
Hi Rob!!! That quilt is beautiful!!! ... (unrelated question: do you have a video making a men's terry cloth robe?.. if not , is that something you can teach us.. please... Merry Christmas and happy New Year!!!
Rob, I love the quilting foot you're using. Can you tell me how I can get this foot for my Brother low shank machine. Love all your tutorials. I'm learning so much!
Hi Sally! Thank you for watching! We recommend reaching out to your dealer or the Brother website to make sure that you find a quilting foot that works best with your machine. Hope you have lots of fun free motion quilting! :)

Great teacher !! I’m new to this I find dressmaking no now to fiddler but I would still like to make things so perhaps this is an option !!
Hey Rob, ? about the batting! Materials list calls for Quilter’s Dream Poly. & Quilter’s Dream Cotton. Not sure where to use each one🥴!
