He was going on instincts, notice how he grabbed his arm so he couldn't get away from the hit. So he wasn't just swinging aimlessly, but he also didn't think about it, otherwise Heimdall would predict that, so that move he pulled off was pure instincts, because of how experienced he is in battle, it was like blinking to him (i mean you don't think about it, it happens naturally).
His whole character is the living embodiment of plot armor, but that's literally supposed to be the case. Still rather play this dude than Master Chief. @@LiterallyAM

That makes so much sense! So many people wonder why kratos can suddenly hit heimdall. Being alive for so long, kratos’ muscle memory and instincts are so finely tuned that emptying his head and just relying on his body without thinking isn’t too much of a stretch for him. Thanks for pointing it out, I love this fight even more than I already did now
What I love is at first you see the slow movement of Kratos as he first throwing out punches but as the battle prolongs his punches and blows getting quicker and sharper....battle instinct
@XWanderingGhostX Not really heimdall would still see it coming, the reason he was able to hit heimdall, although I think is a poor reason, is because Kratos spear makes him disoriented and messes with his senses. Plus Heimdall doesn't know how to fight, he's never had to fight.
I think the thing with the spear is only effective for the actual spear, and it works because of its multiplicity, in theory, every thrust can turn into a ranged attack, or any other possible thrust, and Kratos fights with a spear just as instinctively as anything, so his thoughts don't give anything away either. That second part is the only thing at play when these punch flurries come out, and Kratos starts throwing feints into the mix to screw up the reaction time of the dodges, and also when he gets mad he punch real fast, see it coming get hit anyway. Maybe I'm being generous, but I honestly think all of that comes into play to make him the only one who could beat Heimdall in a straight up brawl, spear or no. The spear just makes it downright simple to damage Heimdall since on top of everything else, any attack might turn into an explosive.

Even if it's not a whole lot in comparison to his health bar, that's still a LOT of damage packed into what Kratos would consider a "light jab", half a bar of health, which did more damage than most of Kratos' standard attacks.

I love the subtle speed increase in each of Kratos' combinations and the perfect setup for the right cross on the second to last combination. Kratos sees that Heimdall's left side is open when attacking with his own left overhand because Heimdall is holding the sword sheathe in his left hand. Absolute beautiful choreography
